Fluoride-containing wastewater pollution poses a serious threat to the global environment. Adsorption represents the most widely employed defluoridation process. Among various adsorbents, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate considerable potential. However, current zirconium-based MOFs for fluoride removal face challenges such as high cost, low adsorption capacity, insufficient mechanistic understanding, and difficulties in reuse due to the lack of stable immobilization methods. Herein, a zirconium‑cerium MOF (denoted as Zr/Ce-M) was prepared by doping MOF-801 with the low-cost metal cerium. At an initial F − concentration of 26 mg/L, its actual adsorption capacity reached 213 mg/g. This represents a 326% improvement compared to conventional MOF-801 and is 66% higher than the adsorbent with the highest known adsorption capacity.Further, zirconium/cerium MOF-based sponge (Zr/Ce-MS) was prepared via a simple method. Zr/Ce-MS exhibited exceptional loading stability under mechanical stress and solvent corrosion. Regeneration tests confirmed effective fluoride removal after eight cycles. Computational results revealed an upward shift in the d-band center of metals and enhanced electron-donating capability after Ce doping. Monodentate coordination (Zr F and Ce F) proved more stable than μ₂- or μ₃-bridging configurations. Strong hybridization occurred between Zr d/Ce d and F p orbitals, with Ce doping strengthening electron transfer from Zr to F − . The defluoridation mechanism of Zr/Ce-MS involves ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and Lewis acid–base complexation. This work provides new insights for developing fluoride adsorbents and mechanistic analysis.

Co-doped CeO 2 creates synergistic Co-O-Ce interfaces and oxygen vacancies. • Distinct CH 3 OH and CO 2 activation sites alleviate competitive adsorption. • Achieves high DMC yield of 16.5 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under 2 MPa CO 2 and 140 °C. • Excellent stability demonstrated over five consecutive reaction cycles. • In situ IR confirms cooperative mechanism at Co-O-Ce active centers and O V . The direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methanol (CH 3 OH) into dimethyl carbonate (DMC) represents a highly attractive route for sustainable chemical synthesis and carbon utilization. However, when operating without dehydrating agents (typically used to shift the thermodynamic equilibrium), the process faces a fundamental challenge on conventional CeO 2 -based catalysts: the competitive adsorption of CO 2 and CH 3 OH for similar active sites, which ultimately limits reaction efficiency. To address this challenge, an innovative strategy was developed through the design of defect-engineered Co 0.05 Ce 0.95 O 2-δ solid solutions. Comprehensive characterization using Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XANES and EXAFS spectra, and AC-TEM confirmed the successful incorporation of Co into the CeO 2 lattice. The incorporation of Co generated abundant oxygen vacancies (O V ) and unique Co-associated interfacial sites (Co-O-Ce). These sites collectively enhanced the catalyst's acidity and basicity and helped alleviate competitive adsorption. Specifically, Co-O-Ce sites are proposed to favor CH 3 OH adsorption and activation, while O V and adjacent Ce ions facilitate CO 2 adsorption and polarization. This cooperative interaction substantially enhances the reaction efficiency, enabling the catalyst to achieve a high DMC formation rate of 16.5 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under mild conditions (140 °C, 2 MPa), which surpasses that of most reported CeO 2 -based catalysts under comparable conditions. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited outstanding stability over five consecutive cycles. The reaction mechanism, involving the synergistic function of the Co-O-Ce interface sites, was further validated by in situ infrared spectroscopy. Beyond providing a highly efficient and stable catalyst, this work offers fundamental insights into active site engineering for promoting cooperative activation in CO 2 conversion reactions. The effects of equimolar La/Ce co-doping (0–0.4 wt.% of each element) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity of the Al-0.5Fe (8176) conductor alloy were investigated in the as-cast, cold-drawn, and annealed (300 °C, 2 h) states. La/Ce additions refine the as-cast eutectic cells and modify the detrimental Al13Fe4intermetallic from coarse plate-like to fine spheroidal particles. At 0.3 wt.% La + 0.3 wt.% Ce (0.3LC), the annealed wire reaches a peak elongation of 16.7% (+42.7% relative to the rare-earth-free alloy), while its electrical conductivity rises from 59.87 to 61.81% IACS. The conductivity increase is explained by a solute-scavenging mechanism: La and Ce bind Fe and Si impurities into stable Al-RE intermetallics, reducing solute-induced electron scattering in the α-Al matrix. At the same time, thermally stable Al-RE dispersoids pin subgrain boundaries during annealing, retard recrystallization, and preserve the fine-grained structure that benefits ductility. Both effects originate from the same RE addition. This coupled scavenging–pinning pathway breaks the usual trade-off between conductivity and ductility and defines an optimal composition range for high-performance Al-Fe conductor alloys.

Ag 3 PO 4 exemplifies the persistent activity-stability trade-off in photocatalysis, where its high photo-oxidation capability is inevitably undermined by severe photocorrosion. This work breaks this coupling by constructing Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ redox-mediating centers within Ag 3 PO 4 . The optimal catalyst achieves near-complete degradation of tetracycline antibiotics within 30 min, with a rate constant increased by approximately 3.2 times, and maintains over 85% of its initial activity after five cycles, whereas pristine Ag 3 PO 4 undergoes complete deactivation. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is identified as the dominant species, and a dual-pathway generation mechanism that bypasses the material's inherent constraints is unveiled: alongside the • OOH‑mediated hole oxidation pathway, the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ couple catalyzes a sequential two‑electron O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 and its subsequent Fenton‑like conversion to 1 O 2 . Combined spectroscopic and theoretical analyses confirm that these centers act as exclusive electron traps, diverting photoexcited electrons away from Ag + sites—thus inhibiting Ag + → Ag 0 corrosion—and directing both electron and hole densities toward themselves in the excited state. This work demonstrates that engineering atomically dispersed redox mediators can decouple charge separation from detrimental surface reactions, providing a general strategy to simultaneously confer high activity and robust stability upon otherwise fragile photocatalysts.

Herein, a simple and environmentally benign synthetic strategy is developed to construct a hydrazine-regulated Bi/S co-doped CeVO 4 trimetallic sulfur-oxide photocatalyst (Bi/S-CeVO 4 ). The resulting material features abundant oxygen vacancy (Vo) defects and stabilized multivalent Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and V 4+ /V 5+ states, which synergistically enhance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER) performance under visible light irradiation. Band structure analyses indicate that Bi/S co-doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of CeVO 4 , leading to improved photocatalytic performance toward PHER. The coexistence of multivalent Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and V 4+ /V 5+ species provides efficient electron-hopping pathways, facilitating photogenerated charge separation and transfer while prolonging carrier lifetime. In addition, Vo defects served as catalytic sites for water-molecule adsorption and activation, further accelerating surface reaction kinetics. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized Bi/S-CeVO 4 -3, featuring the highest electrochemically active surface area of 0.0015 cm 2 and Vo concentration of 24.5%, and suitable ratio of Ce 4+ /(Ce 3+ +Ce 4+ ) (41.8%) and V 4+ /(V 4+ +V 5+ ) (38.5%), delivers the highest PHER rate of 1514.7 μmol·h –1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) x-ray diffraction of 15.28% at 420 nm. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability and durability. This work presents a feasible and effective strategy for electronic structure and defect engineering of CeVO 4 -based photocatalysts to achieve efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution. Graphical Inspired by battery-material redox chemistry, hydrazine-regulated Bi/S co-doping constructs a defect-rich CeVO 4 sulfur-oxide with stabilized multivalent states, enabling a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction rate of 1514.7 μmol·h –1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 15.28% at 420 nm.

A series of molybdenum (Mo) and cerium (Ce) co-doped Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 inorganic cool pigments were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Substitution of Zr by Mo introduces interstitial oxygen into the lattice, leading to lattice expansion while enhancing the near-infrared reflectance of the pigments. Mo coexists in the form of Mo 6+ and Mo 5+ ions, with the yellow coloration primarily originating from Mo 5+ . The lattice expansion induced by the incorporation of larger Ce ions suppresses the formation of interstitial oxygen, thereby promoting an increase in Mo 5+ content, which results in a higher b* value while maintaining high near-infrared reflectance. The optimized composition (Y 1.55 Ce 0.45 Zr 1 Ce 0.65 Mo 0.35 O 7 ) exhibits the following chromatic parameters: L* = 88.26, a* = -3.19, b* = 55.15, and R NIR =93.68%. Furthermore, the simulation experiment revealed that the surface temperature of the coating based on the as-prepared pigment is 16.3 °C lower than that of the cement coating and 11.4 °C lower than that of the commercial iron yellow coating, demonstrating excellent solar reflective performance.

Oxidative stress caused by the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a critical role in the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Current antioxidant therapies using organic ROS scavengers fail in decreasing mortality due to the low ROS scavenging activity and fast metabolic rate. Inorganic ROS scavenging nanoparticles provide potential options for investigating ARDS antioxidant therapy. However, previous studies mainly focus on the ROS scavenging activity of these nanoparticles, while their capability to modulate the endogenous antioxidant system remains largely unexplored. Herein, mesoporous Ce–Mn–O bimetallic oxide nanoparticles (NP CeMn ) are designed and synthesized to activate the endogenous antioxidant system for ARDS therapy. Morphologically similar ceria nanoparticles (NP Ce ) and manganese oxide nanoparticles (NP Mn ) are used for comparison. In vivo and in vitro results demonstrate that NP Ce and NP Mn can promote the expression of SOD1 and SOD2, respectively, while NP CeMn can promote the expression of both SOD1 and SOD2. Mechanism studies establish a Keap1/Nrf2/SOD axis through which NP CeMn acts to activate the endogenous antioxidant system. Based on this property, NP CeMn can effectively alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation in the lung of the murine ARDS model. These findings suggest that activating the endogenous antioxidant system via inorganic nanoparticles is a promising ARDS therapeutic strategy.

This work reports the synthesis of a novel ( α / β- CdS)/Ce(OH)CO 3 composite featuring both heterojunction and heterogeneous junction structures via a simple injection titration-stirring method. The as-prepared composite exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of high-concentration oxytetracycline (OTC) solution. Under optimal conditions determined by single-factor and response surface analyses, 0.0300 g of the composite achieved a 75.26% degradation efficiency for 50 mL of 160 mg/L OTC solution within 120 min of visible light irradiation. Notably, the composite demonstrated remarkable stability, retaining 62.39% of its initial activity after five cycles, and showed enhanced performance under real sunlight for 120 min, with a degradation rate of 78.50%. The improved photocatalytic performance is attributed to the uniform dispersion of CdS nanoparticles with abundant sulfur vacancies, which increase light absorption and facilitate charge carrier separation. Furthermore, the formation of direct Z -scheme heterojunctions and heterogeneous junctions between CdS and Ce(OH)CO 3 promotes efficient separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, thereby enhancing both photocatalytic activity and material stability.

A hemin (Hm)-engineered cerium-based metal–organic framework (MOF), UiO-66(Ce)@Hm, was prepared and used as a nanozyme for electrochemical sensing of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and dissolved hydrogen (H2) in beverages. UiO-66(Ce)@Hm showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2 because of the synergistic catalytic effects of Hm and UiO-66(Ce). The resulting sensor enabled H2O2 detection from 0.5 to 250 μM with a detection limit of 0.32 μM, and was successfully applied to milk analysis. In addition, dissolved H2 in hydrogen-rich water (HRW) promoted the catalytic conversion of o-phenylenediamine/H2O2 to electroactive 2,3-diaminophenazine, allowing H2 determination from 45 to 900 μM with a detection limit of 26.2 μM. These results demonstrate the potential of UiO-66(Ce)@Hm for food safety monitoring and quality assessment of HRW beverages.

Introducing defects into Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective measure to increase adsorption sites, which is of great significance for improving phosphorus (P) adsorption performance. In this study, various defect-containing cerium (Ce)-based MOFs (Ce-MOFs) were prepared by introducing different types and equivalents of monocarboxylates. Among them, butyric acid (BA)-regulated Ce-MOF (Ce-MOF(40BA)) exhibited excellent adsorption performance with a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 117.28 mg P/g. When the initial phosphate concentration was 3 mg P/L, the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 10 min with a phosphate removal rate of 96.6%. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) showed that the average coordination number of Ce-MOF (40BA) was only 4.33 compared to six of the pristine Ce-MOF, indicating an abundant defect content. By increasing defects, mesopores were introduced, enriching the material’s pore structure and achieving a mesopore proportion up to 58.81%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the introduction of defects created numerous unsaturated metal centers, leading to a significant increase in Ce(III) contents. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the defective Ce-MOF had a lower binding energy compared to the pristine Ce-MOF, making it more favorable for phosphate adsorption. This study provides a strategy for preparing efficient defect-containing MOF adsorbents. The excellent adsorption performance of Ce-MOF(40BA) in practical wastewater bodies makes it a promising material for solving water eutrophication.

High-performance humidity sensors have significant potential applications in areas such as smart homes and digital healthcare, but the limited humidity sensing performance of materials hinders their practical application. One major challenge in enhancing the sensing performance of humidity-sensitive materials is the effective regulation of oxygen vacancy content within their crystal structures. In this study, we propose a dual regulation strategy of “ligand induced-pyrolysis synergy” to control the oxygen vacancy content effectively. Specifically, Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) materials containing oxygen vacancies were synthesized using a monocarboxylic acid conditioning method. We further increased the oxygen vacancy content in the MOF derivatives by adjusting the heat treatment temperature. The prepared U6C-20-400 sensor demonstrated excellent performance across a wide humidity range of 3–97% relative humidity (RH), with a rapid response/recovery time of just 0.5 s and 1.2 s. Furthermore, it effectively monitored food as it transitioned from raw to cooked and even burnt during cooking. This study offers valuable insights for developing high quality humidity sensors tailored for next-generation smart home applications.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been widely recognized as an exceptionally promising technique for converting carbon dioxide into high-value-added chemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising photocatalysts for visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction owing to their unique structural advantages, but the achieved efficiency is still not satisfying. Herein, we successfully constructed CdS/UiO-66(Ce) Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalysts by in situ growth of CdS nanoparticles on an octahedral UiO-66(Ce) substrate. The morphology, physicochemical properties, and photoelectric characteristics of the prepared samples were systematically characterized in detail. Photocatalytic activity results indicated that the prepared heterostructure could efficiently reduce CO 2 to CO, and its activity was significantly superior to that of pristine UiO-66 (Ce) and CdS. Under illumination of visible light, the optimal as-prepared sample achieved a CO yield of 134.3 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was 168.6 and 2.62 times higher than that of pure UiO-66(Ce) and CdS, respectively. The reinforced photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CO activity can be ascribed to the obviously improved visible-light harvesting and effectively facilitated the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers via a Z-scheme charge transfer. This study may well present a novel design strategy of highly efficient MOFs-based Z-scheme photocatalytic systems for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.
