Cu-doped cerium oxides were successfully prepared by nitrate combustion method. The crysatlline phase evolution, micro morphology and photocatalytic performance of the products are systematically studied by XRD, SEM/EDX and degradation rate of methylene blue. The results show that at relative low temperature (<600°C), 20 mol% copper can be dissolved into CeO2 fluorite type cubic structure, however, at high temperature of 700°C, CuO phase desolution from CeO2 solid solution is detected by XRD, and confirmed by DTA for 5% Cu-doped sample. The as prepared photocatalysts show agglomeration of ultra fine particles with porous structure. Degradation results of methylene blue indicate that better photocatalytic performance is obtained for 5% Cu-doped CeO2 under the stimulated visible light than UV light irradiation (both 254 nm and 365 nm), even the power of former is half of the later. The loss of photocatalytic activity for higher doping samples (>5% Cu) is believed to be the serious agglomeration of the particles and desolution of CuO from CeO2 solid solution.

In this work, a chemiluminescence (CL) aptasensor was designed for detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR) by introducing Cu/Co nanorods acting as CL catalyzer. Cu/Co nanorods were firstly synthesized throughout a hydrothermal method . Then the thiolated MC-RR aptamer was immobilized on the surface of Cu/Co nanorods, which was employed for recognizing of MC-RR target. In the presence of MC-RR, the conformational change of MC-RR aptamer was happened via recognizing between MC-RR and its aptamer. The luminol CL was catalyzed by Cu/Co nanorods that influenced by conformational change of MC-RR aptamer. The formed MC-RR/aptamer composite prevented the diffusion channel of luminol substrate toward the Cu/Co nanorods surface and restrained the Cu/Co nanorods catalyzing luminol CL. And the intensity of CL depended on the concentration of MC-RR. Under optimal condition, the CL aptasensor had a linear range in 0.1 to 70 nM and a low detection limit of 3.3 × 10 −11 M for MC-RR. This study provided a significant method for MC-RR detection in real samples with excellent selectivity.

Cu/MgO and MgO nested on the surface of Raney Cu were prepared by a wet-mixing method and used as catalyst for glycerol hydrogenolysis. The texture of Raney Cu/MgO was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and CO 2 -temperature-programmed desorption techniques. Results indicated that MgO was well dispersed in the pores of Raney Cu. Moreover, Raney Cu with large specific surface area had a larger contact surface for MgO, and a new phase of Cu–MgO was produced. Glycerol hydrogenolysis was selectively catalyzed under the synergistic effect of Cu and MgO in Cu/MgO catalyst. Under the moderate conditions of 180 °C and 1 MPa H 2 , the conversion of glycerol was 36.2 wt% and the selectivity for 1,2-propanediol was ~85 wt% when chemical equilibrium.

Cu/ZSM5 catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation method and used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and the subsequent decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB). The as-prepared catalyst was characterized with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N 2 adsorption–desorption. The results showed that ZSM5 could effectively restrain the aggregation of CuO. The catalytic activity of Cu/ZSM5 was significantly higher than that of pure CuO due to its large surface area and uniform micropores. Furthermore, effects of several operational parameters such as pH of solution, PMS amount, Cu loading rate, and initial RhB concentration on the decolorization efficiency were investigated in detail. Finally, the stability of the Cu/ZSM5 was studied and the catalyst maintained high catalytic activity with the color removal more than 95% in 1 h after several rounds of regeneration.

Electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation is a cost-effective approach to degrade halogenated organic pollutants in groundwater, and Pd-based catalysts have been found to be an efficient cathode material for this purpose. In this work, a novel Cu@Pd bimetallic catalyst loaded on Ti plate was prepared via combined electrodeposition and galvanic replacement for electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation of atrazine, a typical halogenated pollutant. The obtained bimetallic catalyst with uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles possessed a large electrochemically active surface area of 572 cm 2 . The Cu@Pd/Ti cathode exhibited a higher electrocatalytic efficiency towards atrazine reduction than the individual Pd/Ti or Cu/Ti cathodes, and achieved up to 91.5% within 120 min under a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . Such an electrocatalytic reduction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0214 min −1 . Atrazine was selectively transformed to dechlorinated atrazine, and its degradation pathway was identified. Current density was found to have a critical influence on the atrazine reduction due to the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction at a higher current density. The fabricated bimetallic catalyst also exhibited a good stability. This work provides an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for chlorinated contaminate removal and groundwater remediation.

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a conventional method for fabricating film materials from nanometer-sized building blocks, and exhibits the advantages of low-cost, high-efficiency, wide-range thickness adjustment, and uniform deposition. Inspired by the interest in the application of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, the EPD technique has been recently extended to building blocks with 2D features. However, the studies are mainly focused on simplex building blocks. The utilization of multiplex building blocks is rarely reported. In this work, we demonstrate a controlled EPD of Cu and Au sheets, which are 2D assemblies of luminescent Cu and Au nanoclusters. Systematic investigations reveal that both the deposition efficiency and the thickness are determined by the lateral size of the sheets. For Cu sheets with a large lateral size, a high ζ-potential and strong face-to-face van der Waals interactions facilitate the deposition with high efficiency. However, for Au sheets, the small lateral size and ζ-potential limit the formation of a thick film. To solve this problem, the deposition dynamics are controlled by increasing the concentration of the Au sheets and adding acetone. This understanding permits the fabrication of a binary EPD film by the stepwise deposition of Cu and Au sheets, thus producing a luminescent film with both Cu green emission and Au red emission. A white light-emitting diode prototype with color coordinates (x, y) = (0.31, 0.36) is fabricated by employing the EPD film as a color conversion layer on a 365 nm GaN clip and further tuning the amount of deposited Cu and Au sheets.

For the first time, Cu nanoparticles were evenly decorated on MoS 2 nanosheet by chemical reduction. The as-prepared Cu-MoS 2 hybrid was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and then used to fabricate a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. The performance of our sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric measurement in alkaline media. Electrochemical tests showed that Cu-MoS 2 hybrid exhibited synergistic electrocatalytic activity on the oxidation of glucose with a high sensitivity of 1055 μA mM −1 cm −2 and a linear range up to 4 mM.

Sb-doping has been demonstrated to be a new approach to promote Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) thin film formation . To study the mechanism of Sb-promoted CIGS formation, we investigated the influence of Sb on the evolution of the critical intermediate Cu–Se phases, and found that Cu 3 SbSe 3 species was formed. Phase change of the as-prepared Cu–Se compounds at elevated temperature was determined using the differential scanning calorimetry analysis. For samples containing Sb, the melting decomposition occurred at 507.1 °C, along with aggregation of nanocrystals into a bulk, while the morphology of the sample without Sb barely changed after heating. This result suggests that the mobile Cu 3 SbSe 3 is likely the key intermediate responsible for Sb-promoted CIGS formation. Furthermore, we extended the scope of Sb-doping approach to solvothermal synthesis and CIGS nanocrystals were synthesized with significantly promoted kinetics in the presence of Sb. Based on these results, we propose the mechanism of Sb promoted CIGS formation.

Heterocrystalline polytype nanostructured semiconductors have been attracting more and more attention in recent years due to their novel structures and special interfaces. Up to now, controlled polytypic nanostructures are mostly realized in II–VI and III–V semiconductors. Herein, we report the synthesis and photoelectrochemical properties of Cu-based ternary I–III–VI2 chalcogenide polytypic nanocrystals, with a focus on polytypic CuInS2 (CIS), CuInSe2 (CISe), and CuIn(S0.5Se0.5)2 alloy nanocrystals. Each obtained polytypic nanocrystal is constructed with a wurtzite hexagonal column and a zinc blende/chalcopyrite cusp, regardless of the S/Se ratio. The growth mechanisms of polytypic CIS and CISe nanocrystals have been studied by time-dependent experiments. The polytypic nanocrystals are solution-deposited on indium–tin oxide glass substrate and used as a photoelectrode, thus showing stable photoelectrochemical activity in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation was used to study the electronic structure and the band gap alignment. This versatile synthetic method provides a new route for synthesis of novel polytypic nanostructured semiconductors with unique properties.

In this work, transition metal ion- doped zinc-based quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized via a greener controllable method to avoid the toxicity of the traditional cadmium-based QDs and broaden the tunable emission. Herein, the tunable emission of Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu:ZnInS/ZnS) can cover from 500 to 620 nm by varying the Cu dopant concentration from 1 to 20% and the maximum quantum yield can reach 49.8%. Based on the single-doped QDs, Cu,Mn co-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu,Mn:ZnInS/ZnS) with a photoluminance (PL) quantum yield of 30.4% are obtained. All the as-synthesized QDs have the zinc blende structure and the average size is about 3.55 nm. Besides, the interaction mechanism between the Cu and Mn dopant luminescence centers is proposed in this work, which is rarely investigated in the previous report. Diffusion priority and energy transfer between these two dopants are supposed to play an important role in the co-doped QDs and Cu ions could affect the splitting of Mn d states. Color coordinates of these doped QDs show the line-tunability from (0.200, 0.397) to (0.408, 0.508) on the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) chromatic diagram, showing a promising potential in high-quality white light output by integration of these QDs with blue chips.

In this work, persulfate (S 2 O 8 2− , PS) was introduced to the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system, which consisted of a γ-Bi 2 MoO 6 photoanode and a copper foil cathode (Bi 2 MoO 6 /Cu/PEC/PS system). Significant enhancement of diclofenac sodium (DCF) degradation efficiency was observed in this system under visible light irradiation. At an applied bias of 1.5 V and initial solution pH of 5.62, the removal efficiency of DCF with an initial concentration of 10 mg/L was increased from 19.4% in the PEC process to 86.3% in the PEC process with 10 mM PS addition. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant of DCF degradation was increased from 0.1112 h −1 to 1.0498 h −1 . Active free radicals involving SO 4 − and HO were produced in this process, which were confirmed by electron spin resonance analysis. Furthermore, the surface variation of copper foil cathode was characterized by FE-SEM, GI-XRD, XPS and in situ Raman spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that Cu 2 O formed on the surface in the reaction process with the S 2 O 8 2− addition, which was further confirmed by the photoelectrochemical analysis of the cathode. The surface Cu(0)–Cu(I)–Cu(II)–Cu(0) redox cycle of cathode was proposed, which was responsible for the persulfate activation, leading to the generation of free radicals. This work may provide a new perspective on the combined utilization of different technologies for catalytic contaminant removal.

Degradation of hazardous organic dyes utilizing multifunctional catalytic materials is supposed to be an efficient and promising method. Here, homogeneous Cu-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites are synthesized through a facile and versatile one-pot hydrothermal method. The prepared Cu-Fe 3 O 4 possesses spherical structure with rough surface and average diameter of 230 nm. High catalytic activity and structure stability make Cu-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites effectively degrade rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl orange, and congo red. The existence of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 leads the nanocomposites to separate from the solution through external magnet and reuse for cycle degradation. And during the cyclic utilization, Cu-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites keep high catalytic activity and, thus, could be used as an efficient degradation catalyst for the application of organic dyes.
