Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising for energy storage. However, Zn anode instability—caused by dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and by-product formation—limits their practical viability. HER, in particular, accelerates Zn consumption, disrupts electrode integrity, and induces local alkalization, exacerbating passivation. Conventional strategies emphasize electrolyte formulation and surface passivation, yet few address the underlying electronic origin of HER on Zn. Here we report a catalysis-inspired strategy that electronically modulates Zn reactivity via d-band center engineering to intrinsically suppress HER. By introducing oxalic acid (OA) as a molecular additive, we achieve a significant downward shift in the Zn d-band center (from –6.896 to –7.062 eV), weakening hydrogen adsorption and fundamentally reducing HER activity. In parallel, OA disrupts the Zn 2+ solvation structure by displacing coordinated SO2– 4 anions, suppressing interfacial by-product formation. These dual effects yield unprecedented performance: Zn||Zn symmetric cells operate stably for over 3500 h; Zn||Cu cells exhibit 99.41% Coulombic efficiency over 1500 cycles; and Zn||I 2 cell retain 92.8% capacity after 10,000 cycles; the 1.3 Ah Zn||I 2 pouch cell presents good cyclability. This work pioneers a surface electronic tuning paradigm in battery design, extending catalytic d-band theory to electrochemical interfaces for HER suppression and interfacial stabilization in aqueous metal batteries.

Silicon (Si) is considered as the most promising candidate for anode materials in the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Regulating the morphology and structure of Si plays a vital role in alleviating the volume expansion and improving electronic conductivity. Herein, an ingenious core-shell structure (denoted as CoMOF-D@Si@C) is synthesized by depositing Si uniformly on the pyrolytic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then encapsulated with a carbon shell. The CoMOF-D@Si@C exhibits excellent rate capability and cycle performance, which delivers a high-rate capability of ~957 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 and a reversible capacity of 1493 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles. In particular, the capacity is maintained at 648 mAh g −1 after 1200 cycles at a high current density of 4 A g −1 with a rapid increase of the Coulombic efficiency (CE) to 99.8% after only 5 cycles and the average CE (99.7%) in the whole cycling at 4 A g −1 . Profiting from the outer carbon shell, uniform Si deposition and inner porous pyrolytic MOF structure, this architecture can maintain structural stability and provide constructive conductivity during cycling processes. The superior electrochemical performance of the CoMOF-D@Si@C composite makes it a promising anode material for LIBs.

The highly ordered silver-coated colloidal crystals arrays and macroporous silver films were derived through an electrostatics-induced adsorption effect using polystyrene (PS) as templates. Carboxyl-modified PS microspheres were prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer. PS microspheres were self-assembled into close packing colloidal crystals of facecentered cubic arrays to the substrate with vertical deposition method. These colloidal crystals were modified using dopamine (DA) to form poly-dopamine (PDA) during its oxidative polymerization. Through electrostatic interaction, the silver nanoparticles were deposited and adsorbed onto the surfaces of colloidal crystals templates by exposing [Ag(NH 3 ) 2 ] + solution to infrared irradiation. Removal of the polymeric template by etching with methylbenzene solvent resulted in 3D ordered macroporous silver films. The structural and properties of the ordered silver-coated arrays and macroporous silver films were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results indicate that the prepared silver-coated arrays and macroporous silver films possess the features of ordered multilayer arrangement, uniformity and repeatability as well as an ideal SERS effect.

Composite tissue engineering scaffolds show good comprehensive properties, but improving their interfacial binding force is still a challenge. In this study, polydopamine (PDA) was used as a glue-like layer to solve the interface problem in three-dimensional (3-D) porous hydroxyapatite (HA)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite scaffolds and to improve their comprehensive properties. The morphology, water absorption, porosity, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, and cell viability of HA/TPU and PDA/HA/TPU scaffolds were systematically studied. The scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that a uniform PDA coating layer successfully formed on the surface of 3-D porous HA/TPU composite scaffolds by dopamine self-polymerization. Moreover, the conjugation effect occurred between the PDA and HA/TPU matrix, resulting in an increase in the interfacial binding force of the 3-D PDA/HA/TPU scaffold. The hydrophilicity of the PDA/HA/TPU scaffolds was significantly higher than those of the TPU scaffolds. Both static and dynamic mechanical property tests revealed that the PDA/HA/TPU scaffold possessed excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, such as high strength, high stiffness, and good flexibility, due to the enhancement of the interfacial binding force. Compared with TPU and HA/TPU scaffolds, the addition of a PDA coating could effectively improve the attachment and viability of mouse embryonic osteoblasts cells (MC3T3-E1) incubated on PDA/HA/TPU scaffolds. These results indicate that the PDA/HA/TPU scaffolds possess great potential to be used as tissue engineering scaffolds, and that the PDA coating could be a simple, practical, effective, and universal approach to modify composite scaffolds.

A novel boron adsorbent was fabricated by grafting a boric acid chelating group, i.e., N-methyl- d -glucamine, onto the hydrophilic silica–polyallylamine composites (SPC). The boron adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TGA method. The adsorption experiment indicated a maximum boron load capacity of ca. 1.55 mmol g −1 . The high load capacity was attributed to specific chemical affinity and physical adsorption. Highly effective removal of boric acid from aqueous solution was observed for the adsorbent even in the synthetic seawater containing high concentration of foreign ions. Analysis of adsorption thermodynamic and kinetics revealed a spontaneous sorption process that is driven by enthalpy change and limited by chemical reaction. The exhausted adsorbent was regenerated for repeated use by treating with 3% HCl solution, followed by neutralizing with 3% NH 3 ·H 2 O at ambient temperature. Only 7% capacity loss was observed after five continuous adsorption–regeneration cycles.

Two novel dithieno[3,2-b:2,3-d]pyrrol fused electron acceptors (FREAs) with branched alkyl side-chains have been developed. With 2-ethylhexyl and 2-butyloctyl introduced on the N-position of the pyrrol unit, the sidechain engineered acceptors (INPIC-EH and INPIC-BO) were evaluated for organic solar cells (OSCs) by comparison with our reference INPIC-4F bearing a linear octyl chain. The optoelectronic properties of the FREAs and their bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) with a PBDB-T donor for OSCs are systematically studied. All FREAs exhibit similar absorption spectra and energy levels. Notably, the charge dissociation process, charge mobility, and morphology of the BHJ films make a distinct difference. Consequently, the OSCs constructed with INPIC-EH and INPIC-BO delivered a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.9% and 11.2%, lower than that of INPIC-4F devices (13.1%). The lower short-circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of INPIC-EH and INPIC-OB based devices are attributed to unfavorable morphology of the active layers and more bimolecular recombination and unbalanced charge transport. Our investigation demonstrates that side-chain engineering on FREAs has a great impact on the morphology of blends and thus the photovoltaic properties of their OSCs.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers are used to encapsulate fluorescent guest species with aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effects to enhance fluorescence properties due to their porous structures and high specific surface areas. However, there would be a problem of matching between MOF pores and guest molecules’ sizes. In this paper, amorphous ZIF-8 was modified by carboxyl functional groups (H3BTC-ZIF-8) via introducing the 1,2,4-benzenetricarbonic acid (H3BTC) ligand into the ZIF-8 sol system. Moreover, H3BTC-ZIF-8 was used for the loading of organic fluorescent dyes rhodamine 6G (R6G) and coumarin 151 (C151) to prepare R6G/C151/H3BTC-ZIF-8 composite films. A white-light-emitting composite film (R6G/C151/H3BTC-ZIF-8) with CIE coordinates of (0.323, 0.347) was successfully prepared by compounding fluorescent dyes (R6G and C151) with H3BTC-modified ZIF-8, whose photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can reach 64.0%. It was higher than the PLQY of the composite films prepared by crystalline ZIF-8 (40.2%) or amorphous ZIF-8 without H3BTC (48.0%) compounded with the same concentrations of dyes. The fluorescence enhancement was probably attributed to an increased amount of active sites of H3BTC-modified ZIF-8 interacting with dyes C151 and R6G. This can form hydrogen bonds between H3BTC-ZIF-8 and C151, and weak electron donor–acceptor (D–A) interactions between H3BTC-ZIF-8 and R6G molecules, respectively, thus enhancing the interactions between dyes and ZIF-8 and reducing the ACQ effect existing between dye molecules. Therefore, this strategy could provide an important guidance to develop white-light-emissive materials.

The development of 1-deoxy-d-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase (DXPS) inhibitors still needs an innovative extension with novel chemotypes to avoid herbicide resistance. Herein, a series of 2,4-diphenylquinoline derivatives were designed, synthesized, and structurally optimized from lead compound 24 via stepwise A/B/C-ring modification. Greenhouse assays identified a-3 (3-CF3 A-ring) as the most potent analogue, exhibiting the higher herbicidal activity (71.4% inhibition on DESSO at 375 g a.i./ha) and dosage tolerance than 24. The mechanism of compound a-3 targeting DXPS proteins has been also identified using surface plasmon resonance binding assay, physiological biomarker measurement, substrate accumulation, and molecular docking. The key active motifs between a-3 and DXPS have been further defined based on the structure–activity relationships. This work will further expand the structural diversity of DXPS inhibitors with higher bioactivity.

A Fe/V-CN nanozyme with synergistically enhanced POD-like activity was rationally designed. • A sensitive cascade colorimetric platform for detecting gastric cancer-related D-amino acids was successfully constructed. • The assay supports reliable quantification of D-amino acids in complex human saliva matrices. The development of a practical and reliable cascade colorimetric method for detecting D-amino acids (DAAs) provides a promising tool for the prevention and preliminary diagnosis of gastric cancer. Herein, a bimetallic Fe V supported on graphitic carbon nitride (Fe/V-CN) nanozyme was rationally designed and synthesized via a simple annealing strategy. The atomic dispersion of Fe and V species, along with their coexisting multivalent states (Fe 2+ / 3+ , V 4+ / 5+ ) synergistically boosted the intrinsic peroxidase-like (POD) activity to Fe/V-CN, which were characterized by a high substrate affinity ( K m of 0.078 and 0.083 mM for TMB and H 2 O 2 ) and an accelerated catalytic turnover ( V max of 4.94 × 10 −7 and 7.76 × 10 −7 M·s −1 , respectively). Leveraging this improved activity, a cascade colorimetric sensing system was developed by integrating Fe/V-CN with D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) for the specific detection of DAAs. The platform exhibited favorable analytical performance for D-proline (D-Pro) and D-alanine (D-Ala), offering wide linear ranges of 0–200 μM and 0–160 μM and low detection limits of 0.93 μM and 1.45 μM, respectively, combined with acceptable selectivity against common interferents. For real-sample analysis, the platform was successfully implemented in determine DAAs in human saliva, delivering satisfactory recoveries (95.8–105.7%) and good precision (RSD < 3.5%). This work presented a synergistic Fe/V bimetallic nanozyme and a practical sensing strategy, demonstrating the feasibility of DAAs detection in complex biological matrices. A sequential two-stage chemo-biocatalytic process was investigated for the conversion ofD-xylose to furfuryl alcohol (FOL), an important furan derivative widely used in the manufacture of resins, polymers, fuels, and other value-added products. In the first stage,D-xylose was dehydrated to furfural (FAL) in a ternary Betaine:Formic acid:Malonic acid–water (Bet:FA:MA–H2O) reaction medium. Under the selected conditions, a FAL yield of 65.8% was obtained from 22.5 g/LD-xylose using 15 wt% Bet:FA:MA at 170 °C for 30 min. For the subsequent bioreduction stage, a recombinantEscherichia colistrain co-expressing the aldehyde reductase EutG and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) was constructed. Using glucose as a co-substrate, EutG–GDH whole cells were able to reduce commercial FAL at concentrations up to 150 mM under the selected conditions of 40 °C and pH 7.5. For the sequential process using theD-xylose-derived dehydration liquor, the acidic reaction mixture was adjusted to pH 7.5 and diluted from 98.7 to 30.0 mM FAL before whole-cell bioreduction. The conditioned 30.0 mM FAL feed was essentially completely converted to FOL within 24 h. These results demonstrate the laboratory-scale feasibility of sequentially combining Bet:FA:MA–H2O-mediatedD-xylose dehydration with EutG–GDH whole-cell FAL reduction after interstage pH adjustment and dilution.

The d electrons largely affect the physicochemical properties
of
transition metal, and its rapid screening is significant to the understanding
and regulation of metal-based materials. In this study, we proposed
an imidazole-anchored naphthalenediamine-based fluorescent probe for
rapid screening of d electrons of transition metal ions. The d electron-regulated
fluorescence quenching is attributed to the fact that d electron number-enhanced
probe-metal binding, which promotes the intramolecular charge transfer
and benefits the face-to-face π–π stacking of the
naphthalene motif. The universality of d electron-regulated fluorescence
is validated by imidazole-anchored phenylenediamine with a smaller
π-electron delocalization system. In addition, the d electron
number-related fluorescence character is applied for the differentiation
of transition metal ions based on a sensor array.

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for patients with solid tumors. However, the intricate inflammatory and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment after surgery is recognized as a primary cause of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Here, we design and construct an in situ injectable therapeutic hydrogel encapsulating 1-methyl-d-tryptophan (1-d-MT), a small-molecule competitive inhibitor of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, and meloxicam, a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel) to prevent postoperative tumor metastasis and relapse. In this hydrogel system, 1-d-MT increases cytotoxic T lymphocytes and decreases regulatory T cells, thereby reversing the tumor immune tolerance microenvironment, while released meloxicam reduces inflammation caused by postoperative trauma via the COX-2/PGE2 pathway. When delivered into the resected tumor cavity, the hydrogel system mimics a “hot” tumor-immunity niche to attack residual tumor cells and significantly suppresses the postoperative recurrence of colorectal cancer. In the model of postoperative breast cancer and colorectal cancer recurrence and metastasis, the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel substantially reduces the volume of recurrent tumors and demonstrates 85.1% and 66.7% inhibition rates of metastases, respectively. Importantly, the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel markedly stimulates a potent antitumor immune response in the cancer lesion microenvironment, increasing antitumor immune cells including CD8+ T cells, as well as elevating antitumor cytokines such as interferon-γ. Overall, combination immunotherapy via the Ge1MT/Mel hydrogel after surgery represents a promising strategy to minimize residual tumor burden and reduce recurrence risk following tumor resection.
