Interlayer toughening of Mode I unidirectional CFRP laminates under the synergistic effect of a modified MWCNTs interpenetrating network

Hui Ke,Jiamei Lai,Yilong Li,Xiaomei Xue,Xiang Liu,Jin Cao

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are commonly used in structural components because of their favorable mechanical properties. However, their limited interlayer toughness, resulting from their laminated structure and inherent brittleness, restricts their broader range of applications. The study's goal was to make the matrix system stronger by connecting carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-C) with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). A ternary resin system consisting of epoxy resin (EP) and vinyl ester resin (VER) was created. This system has an interpenetrating network (IPN)structure and modified particles, which improves the interlayer toughness of unidirectional CFRP laminates. The modified MWCNTs-C has better surface reactivity, which lets it spread out well inside the IPN structure made by EP and VER. This reduces the "self-filtering effect" of the particles that come into contact with the VARTM process. The incorporation of 1 wt% of modified MWCNTs-C particles leads to a significant 107% improvement in the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of unidirectional CFRP composites with G ⅠC ,prop value. This suggests that 1 wt% is the optimal amount of particle inclusion. The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G ⅠC ,prop) of unidirectional CFRP composites goes up by 124% when IPN structural toughening is added, reaching a value of 1216 J/m 2 . They found that adding IPN structural toughening to unidirectional CFRP composites raised the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G ⅠC ,prop) by 124%, giving it a value of 1216 J/m 2 . We improved the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G ⅠC ,prop) of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites by 147% by adding particle reinforcement and interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) architecture. The highest value recorded was 1340 J/m 2. Concurrently, the synergistic toughening process was examined by comparing empirical data and scanning electron microscope pictures. This analysis offers a valuable point of reference for choosing the interlaminar toughening method for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites.

In Situ Formed 3,3′,5,5′-Tetramethylbenzidine-Cu(I/II) Charge-Transfer Complex Intermediates Promoting Colorimetric Assay of Cr6+

Jiahui Zhao,Yixuan Zhao,Xuefeng Shao,Ying Sun,Huang Wen,Jian Liu

Developing a synthesis-free, multifunctional, and effective colorimetric assay system based on 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation is attractive yet challenging. Herein, we established a synergetic Cu2+/Cr6+-promoting strategy for TMB-based colorimetric detection of Cr6+. By introducing Cu2+, critical TMB·+···Cu(I/II)···TMB charge transfer complex (TMC) intermediates were in situ formed to reduce the activation energy of TMB oxidation, thereby accelerating Cr6+-mediated TMB oxidation. TMC intermediates also played a pivotal role in H2O2-participated TMB oxidation, clarifying the secondary responsibility of reactive oxygen species frequently caused by Fenton-like reactions. Leveraging the synergetic capacity between Cu2+ and Cr6+ for TMB oxidation, we demonstrated sensitive and specific colorimetric detections for Cr6+ with a limit of detection of 0.006 μM. With its convenient operation and rapid responsiveness, this strategy successfully enabled the practical detection of Cr6+ in real water samples. This work not only enhances the understanding of the internal acceleration mechanism in colorimetric sensing but also provides valuable opportunities to advance synthesis-free detection platforms.

Deep learning assisted quantitative detection of cardiac troponin I in hierarchical dendritic copper–nickel nanostructure lateral flow immunoassay

Shenglan Zhang,Liqiang Chen,YuXin Tan,Shaojie Wu,Pengxin Guo,Xincheng Jiang,Hongcheng Pan

The rising demand for point-of-care testing (POCT) in disease diagnosis has made LFIA sensors based on dendritic metal thin film (HD-nanometal) and background fluorescence technology essential for rapid and accurate disease marker detection, thanks to their integrated design, high sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness. However, their unique 3D nanostructures cause significant fluorescence variation, challenging traditional image processing methods in segmenting weak fluorescence regions. This paper develops a deep learning method to efficiently segment target regions in HD-nanometal LFIA sensor images, improving quantitative detection accuracy. We propose an improved UNet++ network with attention and residual modules, accurately segmenting varying fluorescence intensities, especially weak ones. We evaluated the method using IoU and Dice coefficients, comparing it with UNet, Deeplabv3, and UNet++. We used an HD-nanoCu-Ni LFIA sensor for cardiac troponin I (cTnI) as a case study to validate the method's practicality. The proposed method achieved a 96.3% IoU, outperforming other networks. The R2 between characteristic quantity and cTnI concentration reached 0.994, confirming the method's accuracy and reliability. This enhances POCT accuracy and provides a reference for future fluorescence immunochromatography expansion.

Dual-mode aptasensor based on P-CeO2NR@Mxene and exonuclease I-assisted target recycling for malachite green detection

Mingyue Ye,Xianfeng Lin,Jin Li,Xiaowan Chen,Dichen Ying,Shijia Wu,Zhouping Wang,Nuo Duan

Malachite green (MG) has been illicitly employed in aquaculture as a parasiticide, however, its teratogenic and carcinogenic effects pose a significant human health threat. Herein, a dual-mode colorimetric and electrochemical aptasensor was fabricated for MG detection, capitalizing on the robust catalytic and peroxidase-like activity of P-CeO 2 NR@Mxene and good capture efficiency of a tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN) designed with multiple aptamers (m-TDN). P-CeO 2 NR@Mxene-modified complementary DNA (cDNA) served as both colorimetric and electrochemical probe. m-TDN was attached to AuE to capture MG and P-CeO 2 NR@Mxene/cDNA. The superior aptamer and MG binding to cDNA regulated signals and enabled precise MG quantification. The further introduced Exo I enabled aptamer hydrolysis, releasing MG for further binding rounds, allowing target recycling amplification. Under the optimal conditions, the aptasensor reached an impressively low detection limit 95.4 pM in colorimetric mode and 83.6 fM in electrochemical mode. We believe this dual-mode approach holds promise for veterinary drug residue detection.

Cu,Zn,I-Doped Carbon Dots with Boosted Triple Antioxidant Nanozyme Activity for Treatment of DSS-Induced Colitis

Yifan Cui,Dezhi Yang,Qiulan Li,Zhongmei Peng,Zitao Zhong,Yuzhu Song,Qinqin Han,Yaling Yang

Nanozyme-mediated antioxidative therapy is a promising star for treating a myriad of important diseases through eliminating excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as O2·– and H2O2, a critical mechanism for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This work provides a high biocompatibility iodine–copper–zinc covalent doped carbon dots (Cu,Zn,I-CDs) with the catalase (CAT)-, superoxide dismutase (SOD)- and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like catalytic activities for treating ulcerative colitis (UC) by scavenging overproduced ROS. We found that I dopant aids in counteracting the positive charge at Cu,Zn dopants brought on by low pH, enabling Cu,Zn,I-CDs to process strong triple antioxidant nanozyme activities rather than Cu,Zn-CDs. Vitro experiments displayed that the Cu,Zn,I-CDs could scavenge the excessive ROS to protect cellular against oxidative stress and reduce the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. In sodium dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mice models, Cu,Zn,I-CDs with excellent biocompatibility could effectively relieve the inflammation of the colon, containing the reduction of the colon length, the damaged epithelium, the infiltration of inflammatory cells, and upregulation of antioxidant genes. Therefore, the therapy of Cu,Zn,I-CD antioxidant nanozymes is an effective approach and provides a novel strategy for UC treatment.

Design, synthesis, and antitumor evaluation of sophoridine derivatives as topoisomerase I inhibitors based on the topomer CoMFA model

Ya-Kun Zhang,Jian-Bo Tong,Hong-Yan Zhang,Mu-Xuan Luo,Zhi-Peng Qing,Cheng-Jian Tan

Topoisomerase I (Top I) plays a pivotal role in resolving DNA supercoiling during replication and transcription, highlighting its significance as a therapeutic target in oncology. Despite the clinical efficacy of inhibitors such as Irinotecan and Topotecan, their clinical utility is hindered by the emergence of resistance mechanisms. Sophoridine, a natural alkaloid, has demonstrated promising Top I inhibitory activity, with its derivatives showing enhanced antitumor effects. In this study, the Topomer CoMFA approach was utilized to construct a validated 3D-QSAR model to explore the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of sophoridine derivatives. Based on the model's guidance, nine derivatives were designed, four of which were synthesized and subjected to biological evaluation. Computational investigations, including molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and ADMET predictions, provided detailed insights into their binding interactions and drug-like properties. These findings establish a robust theoretical framework for the rational design of sophoridine-based Top I inhibitors with potential applications in cancer treatment.

Adsorption Behavior of Co2+, Ni2+, Sr2+, Cs+, and I− by Corrosion Products α-FeOOH from Typical Metal Tanks

Yingzhe Du,Lili Li,Yukun Yuan,Yufaning Yin,Genggeng Dai,Yaqing Ren,Shiying Li,Peng Lin

Throughout the nuclear power production process, the disposal of radioactive waste has consistently raised concerns about environmental safety. When the metal tanks used for waste disposal are corroded, radionuclides seep into the groundwater environment and eventually into the biosphere, causing significant damage to the environment. Hence, investigating the adsorption behavior of radionuclides on the corrosion products of metal tanks used for waste disposal is an essential component of safety and evaluation protocols at disposal sites. In order to understand the adsorption behavior of important radionuclides60Co,59Ni,90Sr,135Cs and129I on α-FeOOH, the influences of different pH values, contact time, temperature and ion concentration on the adsorption rate were studied. The adsorption mechanism was also discussed. It was revealed that the adsorption of key nuclides onto α-FeOOH is significantly influenced by both pH and temperature. This change in surface charge corresponds to alterations in the morphology of nuclide ions within the system, subsequently impacting the adsorption efficiency. Sodium ions (Na+) and chlorate ions (ClO3−) compete for coordination with nuclide ions, thereby exerting an additional influence on the adsorption process. The XPS analysis results demonstrate the formation of an internal coordination bond (Ni–O bond) between Ni2+and iron oxide, which is adsorbed onto α-FeOOH.

Electrochemical behaviour of Sudan I at Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode and its determination in food samples

Huanshun Yin,Yunlei Zhou,Xiaomeng Meng,Tiantian Tang,Shiyun Ai,Lusheng Zhu

In this work, a simple and sensitive electrochemical method was developed to determine Sudan I based on magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The sensor exhibited an obviously electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of Sudan I, which can be confirmed by the increased oxidation peak current and the decreased oxidation peak potential when compared with the bare GCE. The determination conditions, such as pH, modifier amount, accumulation time and accumulation potential, were optimised. And some kinetic parameters were calculated. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the oxidation current of Sudan I was proportional to its concentration from 0.01 to 1   μM and 1 to 20   μM. The detection limit was estimated to be 0.001   μM ( S / N   =   3). The developed method was successfully applied to determine Sudan I content in food samples with satisfactory results.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Photosensitizer with Ag(I)−π Interaction-Enhanced Reactive Oxygen Species for Eliminating Multidrug Resistant Bacteria

Senlin Peng,Jiayi Song,Shouting Wu,Qian Wang,Lingyi Shen,Dongmei Li,Jian Peng,Qilong Zhang,Xianjiong Yang,Hong Xu,Carl Redshaw,Ying Li

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria pose serious threats to public health due to the lack of effective and biocompatible drugs to kill MDR bacteria. Photodynamic antibacterial therapy has been widely studied due to its low induction of resistance. However, photosensitizers that can efficiently generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) through both type I and type II mechanisms and that have the capability of multiple modes of action are rarely reported. Addressing this issue, we developed a near-infrared-emitting triphenylamine indole iodoethane (TTII) and its silver(I) self-assembled (TTIIS) aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer for multimode bacterial infection therapy. TTII can efficiently produce both Type I ROS •OH and Type II ROS 1O2. Interestingly, the Ag(I)−π interaction contributed in TTIIS efficiency promotion of the generation of 1O2. Moreover, by releasing Ag+, TTIIS enabled photodynamic-Ag(I) dual-mode sterilization. As a result, TTIIS achieved an effective enhancement of antibacterial activity, with a 1–2-fold boost against multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (MDR E. coli). Both TTII and TTIIS at a concentration as low as 0.55 μg mL–1 can kill more than 98% of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on MRSA-infected full-thickness defect wounds of a mouse, and both TTII and TTIIS were effective in eliminating the bacteria and promoting wound healing.

A facile electrochemical aptasensor for chloramphenicol detection based on synergistically photosensitization enhanced by SYBR Green I and MoS2

Hui Feng,Meng Luo,Guonian Zhu,Kerage Dorothy Mokeira,Yaoxin Yang,Yongxin Lv,Qing Tan,Xiangwen Lei,Hang Zeng,Hefa Cheng,Shuxia Xu

This study described the development of a photocatalytic electrochemical aptasensor for the purpose of detecting chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic residues in water by utilizing SYBR Green I (SG) and chemically exfoliated MoS 2 (ce-MoS 2 ) as synergistically signal-amplification platforms. The Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) were electrodeposited onto the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. After that, the thiolate-modified cDNA, also known as capture DNA, was combined with the aptamer. Subsequently, photosensitized SG molecules and ce-MoS 2 nanomaterial were inserted into the groove of the resultant double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). The activation of the photocatalytic process upon exposure to light resulted in the generation of singlet oxygen. This singlet oxygen effectively splits the double-stranded DNA, resulting in a significant enhancement in the current of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- . When the CAP was present, both SG molecules and ce-MoS 2 broke away from the double-stranded DNA, which turned off the photosensitization response, leading to a significant decrease in the current of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- . Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor exhibited a linear relationship between CAP and logarithmic concentrations from 20 to 1000 nM, with a detection limit (3 σ ) of 3.391 nM. The aptasensor also demonstrated good selectivity towards CAP in the presence of interfering antibiotics such as tetracycline, streptomycin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and sulfadimethoxine. Additionally, the results obtained from the analysis of natural water samples using the proposed aptasensor were consistent with the findings acquired through the use of a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Therefore, with its simplicity and high sensitivity, this biosensor can potentially detect alternative antibiotics in environmental water samples by replacing the aptamers based on photosensitization.

Lysosomal-targeted near-infrared phototherapy agent with type-I photodynamic activity for high-performance synergistic therapy under hypoxia

Xianjiao Tang,Xiaojing Yang,Yuhan Wang,Liping Chen,Pengwei Chen,Mei-Xia Zhao

The development of near-infrared (NIR) multifunctional phototherapy agents is important for expanding the application of photodynamic therapy (PDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) for tumor diagnosis and treatment. Here, we constructed a phototherapeutic agent, CYPT nanoparticles (NPs), based on a cyanine dye (Cy7) for synergistic NIR image-guided tumor-specific PDT/PTT. CYPT NPs produced large amounts of type I O 2 •− and type II 1 O 2 under 808-nm laser irradiation with a high photothermal conversion efficiency (33.5%). Moreover, CYPT NPs targeted the lysosomes of cancer cells and reduced GSH, contributing to the high efficiency of PDT. CYPT NPs had similar inhibitory effects on 4T1 cells under hypoxic and normoxic conditions. Experiments in tumor-bearing mice confirmed that CYPT NPs can be enriched in tumor tissues, have good NIR fluorescence imaging performance, and exhibit efficient synergistic PDT/PTT, thus providing an attractive method for accurate tumor targeting and efficient treatment.

Win-win integration: A mitochondria targeted AIE photosensitizer for hypochlorite detection and type I & type II photodynamic therapy

Jiahao Ni,Lichao Yu,Yixuan Wang,Tong Yang,Yueqi Bai,Bowen Zheng,Manshan Liang,Xiaoxia Ye,Yun-Yun Quan,Feifei Lin,Zu-Sheng Huang

Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a pioneering and effective anticancer modality with low adverse effects and high selectivity. Hypochlorous acid or hypochlorite (HClO/ClO − ) is a type of inflammatory cytokine. The abnormal increase of ClO − in tumor cells is related to tumor pathogenesis and may be a “friend” for the design and synthesis of responsive phototherapy agents. However, preparing responsive phototherapy agents for all-in-one noninvasive diagnosis and simultaneous in situ therapy in a complex tumor environment is highly desirable but still remains an enormously demanding task. Results An acceptor-π bridge-donor-π bridge-acceptor (A-π-D-π-A) type photosensitizer TPTPy was designed and synthesized based on the phenothiazine structure which was used as the donor moiety as well as a ClO − responsive group. TPTPy was a multifunctional mitochondria targeted aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer which could quickly and sensitively respond to ClO − with fluorescence “turn on” performance (19-fold fluorescence enhancement) and enhanced type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to effectively ablate hypoxic tumor cells. The detection limit of TPTPy to ClO − was calculated to be 185.38 nM. The well-tailored TPTPy anchoring to mitochondria and producing ROS in situ could disrupt mitochondria and promote cell apoptosis. TPTPy was able to image inflammatory cells and tumor cells through ClO − response. In vivo results revealed that TPTPy was successfully utilized for PDT in tumor bearing nude mice and exhibited excellent biological safety for major organs. Significance and novelty A win-win integration strategy was proposed to design a tumor intracellular ClO − responsive photosensitizer TPTPy capable of both type I and type II ROS production to achieve photodynamic therapy of tumor. This work sheds light on the win-win integration design by taking full advantage of the characteristics of tumor microenvironment to build up responsive photosensitizer for in situ PDT of tumor.
