SiO x anodes hold great promise for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the high capacity and enhanced cycling stability versus silicon. However, its long-term development is hampered by seeking a scalable and effective method to tackle the issues of low conductivity and large volume expansion. Herein, a novel anode material is constructed by wrapping SiO x into PVA derived carbon layer and N-doped carbon (NC) nanosheets derived from exfoliated chitin nanosheets. The SiO x nanoparticles tightly encapsulated by the chitin nanosheets and PVA are transformed to robust SiO x @NC composites after pyrolysis. The encapsulation of PVA derived carbon layer and the NC sheets enhances the conductivity, relieves the volume change, and contributes to forming a stable SEI film. As a result, the prepared SiO x @NC-2 anode delivers a stable cycling performance and competitive rate capability. After 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , a relatively high capacity of 602 mA h g −1 is maintained. The cost-effective precursors and facile synthetic route can promote the application of the SiO x @NC composites as anode materials in energy storage, as well as facilitating the large-scale application of the biowaste derived chitin.

Novel magnetic gel beads were successfully fabricated via a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) double-cross-linked network and loaded with ferroferric oxide@potassium humate (Fe3O4@KHA) nanoparticles. The PVA/SA/Fe3O4@KHA gel beads were found to exhibit an excellent removal efficiency for methylene blue (MB) dye and Pb(II). The physicochemical properties of these gel beads were systematically characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, zeta analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry. The adsorption process was found to follow a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the experimental data were in good agreement with the Langmuir model, with maximum adsorption capacity values of 781.92 and 347.19 mg g−1 for MB and Pb(II) at 298 K, respectively. The thermodynamic measurements demonstrate that adsorption onto these gel beads was spontaneous, endothermic, and driven by an increase in the system entropy. Furthermore, FT-IR and X-ray spectroscopy investigations demonstrate that the mechanism through which Pb(II) was removed mainly involved chelation by the carboxyl groups, whereas MB adsorption takes place via H-bonding and electrostatic interactions. Notably, PVA/SA/Fe3O4@KHA showed high selectivity for MB adsorption. Additionally, the prepared magnetic gel beads could be readily regenerated and efficiently reused for several cycles and their excellent magnetic properties can simplify the adsorbent separation process.

The development and comparison of latent fingerprint (LFP) are crucial for the detection and identification of LFP. However, research on stable, clear, and no background interference’s fluorescent materials for LFP recognition are scarce. In this study, lignin-derived carbon dots (CDs) with orange red emission were synthesized and combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix for identification of LFP and ink-free printing. The physicochemical and microstructure of the CDs and CDs/PVA nanocomposite have been precisely elucidated by TEM , FT-IR, XPS , SEM , and TGA to verify the reaction of CDs with PVA forming hydrogen bonds. The effect of CDs on the mechanical properties of PVA nanocomposite was studied. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PVA nanocomposite were increased by 113.01 % and 175.26 %, respectively. The shape memory and fluorescence properties of CDs/PVA nanocomposite were studied under different conditions such as water, acid, alkali and heat. The fluorescence intensity of CDs/PVA nanocomposites was enhanced due to the deprotonation of CDs surface under alkaline conditions. By coating CDs/PVA solution on LFP, a stable fluorescent fingerprint with clear ridge details was formed on the composite film, and it is applied to letterpress printing and gravure printing, enabling personal identification and ink-free printing. Obviously, the nanocomposite film prepared herein has multiple functions, providing potential for the design and manufacture of advanced all-round personal information identification and encryption applications in extremely harsh high temperature and strong alkaline environments.

Adsorption-based technology provides a feasible alternative for phosphorus control in waterbodies. Herein, La-biochar derived from toxic sludge was encapsulated into polymer matrix as functional filler, and then surface modification on formed hydrogel via in-situ polymerization of polydopamine (PDA) was realized to achieve enhanced phosphate removal from water. Effects of biochar content and PDA coating time on adsorption performance were investigated, and optimized composite beads could achieve experimental maximum capacity of ∼13.74 mg P/g. Solution pH study implied favorable adsorption at pH 4–6, and coexisting anions noticeably facilitated phosphate capture owing to hydrogel swelling while reverse effect was observed for cation Ca 2+ . Kinetic study showed phosphate adsorption was chemisorption in nature, and overall adsorption process was mainly controlled by intraparticle diffusion stage. Adsorption isotherm using different samples suggested the transformation of sorption form from multilayer heterogeneous adsorption to monolayer homogeneous adsorption after PDA coating on hydrogel surface. Thereafter, the reusability of as-prepared hydrogel was investigated through cyclic adsorption–desorption experiments, and continuous treatment of phosphate-enriched water was conducted to evaluate its potential for practical application. This work could provide useful implication to the development of functional composite hydrogels for phosphate removal.

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hybrid membranes with zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) particles were fabricated by the viscosity-driven in situ self-assembly of ZIF-90 particles in a PVA matrix and were employed for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation (PV) technology. By this method, the size-controlled and well-distributed ZIF-90 particles were successfully embedded into PVA membranes. Based on the cross-linking reactions between the ZIF-90 particles and the PVA matrix, the ZIF-90/PVA hybrid membranes demonstrated higher mechanical strength, swelling resistance, and a high separation performance for ethanol dehydration. The ZIF-90/PVA hybrid membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, a mechanical test, and water contact angle measurements. The effects of the ZIF-90 particle size, loading level, thermal treatment temperature, operation temperature, and the feed compositions of the PVA hybrid membranes on the PV performance were systematically explored. Accordingly, the hybrid membranes exhibited excellent water permeability and selectivity for water–ethanol mixture separation. Specifically, the ZIF-90/PVA hybrid membrane (M-8), which was treated thermally at 130 °C, exhibited its optimal PV performance at a flux of 268 g/(m 2 h) and a separation factor of 1379 for the PV dehydration of the 90 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 30 °C. The ZIF-90/PVA hybrid membranes exhibited excellent potential in the PV application for ethanol dehydration.

Low carrier mobility of WO 3 material limited its application and development in the field of optoelectronic devices , especially used in photodetectors. Herein, a quasi-solid-state photoelectrochemical photodetector based on WO 3 film and solid-state electrolyte (PVA/ZnSO 4 ) was constructed. The WO 3 film was prepared by a hydrothermal method . The obtained WO 3 /PVA/ZnSO 4 quasi-solid-state photoelectrochemical photodetector exhibits superior near ultraviolet light detection performance and better stability compared with the traditional WO 3 /ZnSO 4 photoelectrochemical detector. Considered the volatility of water in the electrolyte, a small amount of NaCl was added into the electrolyte to increase the water retention property of the electrolyte. The obtained results demonstrate that NaCl has some water retention property and can improve the stability of the device effectively. These obtained results provide the data foundation for the research and development of photodetectors based on WO 3 materials.

In contemporary agriculture, eco-friendly mulching films present a promising alternative to conventional plastic mulching films. However, their potential is constrained by challenges related to limited biodegradation and barrier performance. Addressing these limitations, innovative lignin-carboxylated materials were employed as bio-based crosslinking agents to enhance diverse properties in the fabrication of PVA films. Alkali lignin was modified with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to enhance its chemical reactivity. The abundance of carbonyl groups in modified lignin (Lig-DTPA) plays a significant role in establishing strong compatibility with PVA through covalent bonds. This interaction yielded remarkable enhancements, elevating both tensile strength and tensile modulus by an impressive 50.9 % and 60.1 %, respectively. The introduction of Lig-DTPA at 3 % into the PVA composite films resulted in excellent UV-blocking properties. Moreover, at 3 % ratios, the presence of lignin became visibly dispersed as clear spots across the film, indicating a relatively uniform state within the matrix. The study revealed a direct correlation: as the lignin content increased, the film exhibited heightened water solubility and enhanced biodegradability. The PVA/Lig-DTPA film displays promising potential for utilization as a mulching film material, offering anti-ultraviolet functionality and a high degradation rate. Furthermore, its versatility extends to potential applications in packaging materials, including seedling bowls, transplanting pots, and coating films for transportation purposes.

Smart packaging material capable of real-time monitoring of food freshness is essential for ensuring food safe. At present, colorimetric ammonia-sensing smart film often possesses issues with complicated production, high cost, and inferior long-term colour stability. Herein, Zinc‑copper bimetallic organic framework (ZnCu-BTC, BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate acid) nanorods with colorimetric ammonia-responsiveness were synthesized by adopting facile aqueous solution method, which were then explored as nano inclusions in potato starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PS/PVA) composite film towards developing high-performance smart packaging material. The results demonstrated that the introduction of ZnCu-BTC nanorods within PS/PVA brought about remarkable improvement in blend compatibility, accompanied by a boost in tensile strength to 47.2 MPa, as well as enhanced ultraviolet (UV) blocking efficacy (over 95.0 %). Additionally, the barrier properties of PS/PVA film against water vapor and oxygen were fortified due to the addition of ZnCu-BTC. More importantly, the developed PS/PVA/ZnCu-BTC nanocomposite film displayed satisfactory antibacterial activity (over 99 %) against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), favorable colorimetric ammonia-sensing ability, and long-term colour stability. The ZnCu-BTC incorporated PS/PVA nanocomposite film could grant real-time detection of prawn freshness decline via remarkable colour change, indicating vast promise for smart food packaging applications.

Lightweight structural/microwave absorption (MA) integrated materials with broadband MA are urgently needed in the aerospace field. In this study, crosslinked PVA/CNF backbone-supported RGO foams were successfully filled into aramid honeycomb structures with significant broadband MA performance and structural enhancement properties through a synergistic strategy of chemical crosslinking, environmental drying and chemical vapor reduction. Flexible tuning of the electromagnetic parameters of the PVA/CNF@GO foam can be achieved by adjusting the number of GO parts. The 30 mm thickness of the PVA/CNF@14GO foam achieves a broadband effective absorption of 13.25 GHz, covering almost all C, X and Ku bands. Microstructural characterization and electromagnetic parameter tests proved that the uniform distribution of RGO was achieved with crosslinked PVA/CNF as the backbone, which resulted in less Debye relaxation and the construction of uniform conductive pathways. Therefore, the PVA/CNF@14GO-filled honeycomb not only enables the composite honeycomb to achieve broadband MA performance, but also achieves a compressive strength of 5.52 MPa, which is an improvement of 262.86 % with respect to that of the pure honeycomb. The obvious overlap of the CST power loss distribution and the electric field distribution region shows that the conductive loss and the 1/4 wavelength interference are the main paths for energy dissipation in the composite of the PVA/CNF@GO-filled honeycomb. The honeycomb-filled PVA/CNF@GO lightweight foams obtained in this chapter have good broadband microwave absorption properties and higher structural strength, which provide important design strategies and practical references for the development of high-performance MA-filled honeycomb structures.

The increased demand for improved strategies for wound healing has, in recent years, motivated the development of multifunctional hydrogels with favorable bio-compatibility and antibacterial properties. To this regard, the current study presented the design of a novel self-healing composite hydrogel that could perform as wound dressing for the promotion of wound healing. The composite hydrogels were composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax and chitosan functionalized with sialic acid (SA-CS) and curcumin loaded pluronic F127 micelles. The hydrogels were formed through the boronic ester bond formation between PVA, SA-CS and borax under physiological conditions and demonstrated adjustable mechanical properties, gelation kinetics and antibacterial properties. When incubating with NIH3T3 cells, the hydrogels also demonstrated good biocompatibility. These aspects offer a promising foundation for their prospective applications in developing clinical materials for wound healing.

To engineer a hydrogel elastomer for use as an in vivo tissue replacement, it is imperative to ensure superior fatigue resistance, guaranteeing a prolonged service life. Investigating the molecular mechanisms of strain energy accumulation and transmission, which occur during the compression of elastomeric materials, is instrumental in elucidating the causes of hydrogel material fatigue. Such insights are of immense value for the development of durable artificial tissue replacements, ensuring their longevity and sustained functionality within the human body. We synthesized hydrogel elastomers through polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with good biocompatibility, and studied their fatigue behavior through molecular dynamics (MD). The results of this analysis demonstrate that the introduction of energy dissipation structures between mechanically supported molecular frameworks can enhance the relaxation efficiency of polymers. This improvement leads to enhanced resistance of hydrogels to compression fatigue. A total of 1,000,000 cycles of compression tests were conducted to verify that WPU/PVA did not exhibit any significant compression fatigue under high stress of 50 % strain. In contrast, PVA hydrogel exhibited obvious fatigue due to the absence of an energy dissipation structure. These results revealed the source of compression fatigue resistance of hydrogel elasticity and provided powerful guidance for the design and synthesis of artificial tissues.
