Conductivity versus structure dependence investigation of Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) through composition optimization by adjusting Si/P ratio

L. Liu,J. Su,X. Zhou,D. Liang,Y. Liu,R. Tang,Y. Xu,Y. Jiang,Z. Wei

Presently, the low ionic conductivity of Na super ionic conductor (NASICON) electrolytes is one of the main obstacles to the development of solid-state sodium batteries . Most researchers focus on the modified NASICON by doping with foreign elements and have not paid much attention to the effect of the composition changing by adjusting the ratio of elements in Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) on the ionic conductivity . In order to clarify the relationship between the ionic conductivity and the structure/composition of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 , the ionic conductivity dependence on the Si/P ratio is systematically investigated in this study. The obtained results demonstrate that the ionic conductivity variation of NASICON is close to an order of magnitude i.e. the ionic conductivity of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 is much more sensitive to the Si/P ratio in the structure. This means that it is crucial to control the composition during the preparation process to obtain the electrolyte with high ionic conductivity. The strong composition-dependent property of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 can be attributed to the change of current carrier concentration, crystal structure, and sintering property resulting from the Si/P ratio. The results are insightful for further understanding the conducting characteristics of Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 material and its derivatives.

Self-assembly of hierarchical microsized hard carbon-supported Si encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon as anode for lithium-ion batteries

Liu Yuansheng,Liu Huitian,Huang Wenlong,Yu Yu,Dai Xiaoqian,Shan Zhongqiang

Dramatic volumetric variation and poor cyclic stability are great challenges for the practical application of Si anode in lithium-ion batteries. In this work, hierarchical microsized hard carbon-supported Si encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (HC/Si@NC) composites is successfully synthesized via electrostatic self-assembly between an intrinsic negatively charged hard carbon precursor and positively charged Si nanoparticles for the first time. Resorcinol formaldehyde resin sphere synthesized through a low-cost extended Stöber method is used as the carbon core precursor to support Si nanoparticles, followed by carbon coating and carbonization process to further fix Si on the carbon core and enhance the conductivity. The hierarchical structure where Si nanoparticles are tightly anchored onto the carbon core can significantly alleviate the volumetric expansion of Si, and the carbon can enhance the conductivity of the composites. As a result, the as-achieved HC/Si@NC composites exhibit outstanding cycling stability and good structural integrity maintenance. The composites deliver a reversible capacity of 541 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 92.1% after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 and a capacity of 350 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at a higher current density of 1 A g −1 .

The influence of pore structure and Si/Al ratio of HZSM-5 zeolites on the product distributions of α-cellulose hydrolysis

Shuang Chu,Li’na Yang,Xingcui Guo,Linlin Dong,Xiufang Chen,Yaru Li,Xindong Mu

The catalytic behavior of a series of MFI catalysts with different Si/Al ratio (25–300) in the direct aqueous-phase hydrolysis of α-cellulose was studied. The effects ultrasonic pretreatment time, ZnCl 2 content, zeolite pore structure and acid-basic properties on catalyst activity and products distribution were systematically investigated. The results indicated that HZSM-5 with lower Si/Al ratio was beneficial for production of glucose and LA from α-cellulose. Ultrasonic pretreatment could decrease the degree of crystallinity and polymerization of α-cellulose, enhance the accessibility of acid sites and ZnCl 2 to the loosened amorphous regions of α-cellulose in water, and improve the hydrolysis efficiency of α-cellulose. The desilicated ZSM-5 (HZSM-5-DS(0.2)) showed much higher catalytic activities as compared to commercial ZSM-5 and α-cellulose conversion reached 76.5% over HZSM-5-DS(0.2) at 200   °C. Catalytic conversion of α-cellulose consisted of at least three important parallel reactions under the present hydrothermal conditions and a plausible pathway was proposed. Effective control of these reactions would be helpful to further maximize the target product yield during the catalytic conversion of α-cellulose.

Wettability Control of Co–SiO2@Ti–Si Core–Shell Catalyst to Enhance the Oxidation Activity with the In Situ Generated Hydroperoxide

Meng Liu,Song Shi,Li Zhao,Min Wang,Guozhi Zhu,Jin Gao,Jie Xu

With the aim of utilizing O2 as an oxidant, cascade reaction strategy was usually employed by first transforming O2 into the in situ generated hydroperoxide and then oxidized the substrate. To combine the two steps more efficiently to get a higher reaction rate, a series of core–shell catalysts with core and shell having different wettabilities were designed. The catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, sessile water contact angle, among other methods. These catalysts were applied in the research of the diphenyl sulfide oxidation by the in situ generated hydroperoxide derived from ethylbenzene oxidation. Through control experiments, the hydrophobic modification in the shell and core will influence different steps of the overall cascade reaction. Further insight into the reaction illustrated that the overall reaction rate was not simply an adduct of the promotion effects from the two steps, which was mainly attributed to the inhibition effect for the co-oxidation of ethylbenzene with diphenyl sulfide. Through the guidance of the relationship, a rationally designed core–shell catalyst with appropriate modifying organic groups showed an enhanced performance of the overall cascade reaction. The rational design of the catalysts would provide a reference for other cascade reactions.

A Si-MoSe2 Heterostructured Anode with Enhanced Thermal Transport and Electrochemical Performance for Liquid and All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yajun Zhu,Jiaqi Gu,Guangwu Zhang,Tianli Han,Yang Lu,Zhongbing Li,Hang Su,Fei Wang,Haojun Xu,Wentuan Bi,Qiye Zheng,Jinyun Liu

Silicon anodes offer high theoretical capacity for lithium-ion batteries but suffer from volume-change-induced instability and degradation. Conventional van der Waals coatings yield unstable interfaces and poor ion/electron transport, while thermal transport remains underexplored. Here, we propose heterointerface-engineered Si@MoSe 2 @C anodes with chemically bonded interfaces, where lattice-matched MoSe 2 covalently bridges porous Si and carbon coating, forming robust Si─Se─Mo linkages that stabilize the structure and optimize transport pathways. The Si@MoSe 2 @C anode delivers 1054 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 —exceeding most Si anodes—and 99.5% Coulombic efficiency over 400 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , with high cycling efficiency demonstrated in both liquid and all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs). In situ X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy/spectroscopy, together with first-principles calculations, confirm that this MoSe 2 -mediated covalent bridging enables reversible reactions with favorable kinetics and structural integrity by strengthening and delocalizing Se─Si bonding and reducing Li + migration barriers by 24%. Critically, we present the first measurements of the effective thermal conductivity of a silicon-anode composite, showing that Si@MoSe 2 @C exhibits a 27% higher value than Si, addressing long-overlooked cell-level thermal-management requirements and improving elevated-temperature cell performance. This heterointerface design provides a synergistic strategy for engineering high-performance Si anodes across batteries with enhanced safety.

Small Things Make a Big Difference: the Small-molecule Cross-linker of Robust Water-soluble Network Binders for Stable Si Anodes

Wang Dong,Li Zhenwei,Zhang Qian,Liu Jie,Yang Yu,Han Jishu,Wang Lei

Silicon(Si) with high theoretical capacity has attracted tremendous attention as the next-generation anode material for Li-ion batteries, but the huge expansion during cycling restricts its practical application. Designing a low-cost, accessible robust network binder is a facile and effective approach to suppress the volume change effect and achieve the commercial application of Si anodes. Different previous studies focused on the network binder macromolecule main chain, this manuscript pays attention to the study of small-molecule cross-linker. Herein, cross-linked network binders using alginate acid and two kinds of cross-linkers, i.e., D -sorbitol and isosorbide(Alg-DS and Alg-IS binders) are synthesized. It was found that not only the chemical structure of the cross-linker but also the physicochemical property, such as melting point affect greatly the mechanical properties of the network binder. As a result, the Si anode with an Alg-DS binder dried below the melting point of DS shows the best cycling stability with a high capacity of 2249.8 mA·h/g and a retention rate as high as 95.9% after 100 cycles. This study gives a new view to design robust network binders for stable Si anodes.

Rongrong Miao,Jinhui Zhu,Shimin Kang,Jun Yang,Jiulin Wang,Jinxia Fu,Minggui Li,Cansheng Shi

Micrometer silicon (MSi) particles are prospective anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. Aiming at the scale-up production and the improvement in rate capability, a novel sub-micro Si/Sn@SiO x -C (SSSC) composite via a facile two-step process of milling and annealing is designed and synthesized. With the structural uniqueness including in-situ introduction of metallic tin (Sn) originated from mechano-reduction of nano tin dioxide (nano-SnO 2 ) with MSi, dual-buffering of inner SiO x matrix and uniform surface carbon layer , SSSC electrodes exhibit impressive rate capability and stable cyclability. The optimum architecture of SSSC-73 ( i.e. weight ratio of precursor MSi-to-SnO 2 is 7:3) delivers stable cycling with 1102 mAh g − 1 (at 0.5 A g − 1 ) over 100 cycles and exceptional rate performance with a high capacity retention of 95% over 500 cycles at 2 A g − 1 . Particularly, this facile and cost-effective preparation of SSSC composites has no by-products, making it competitive in practical application.

In-situ CNT-reinforced double-layer carbon Si/C anodes for Li-ion batteries with low volume expansion and high cyclability

Xiaobo Ma,Weibin Li

A new approach is proposed for in-situ growth of carbon nanotubes on the surface of ZIF-8 particles. • The double-layer carbon encasing effectively suppresses the volume expansion of silicon nanoparticles. • The silicon carbon composite exhibits excellent cycling performance for lithium-ion battery anodes. • Abundant CNT-containing carbon framework boosts conductivity and lithium ion diffusion kinetics. Silicon-based materials as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, face critical challenges including significant volume expansion during charge/discharge cycles and low electronic conductivity. Carbon-coated silicon particles represent a promising approach, and their cycling stability falls short of the need in practical applications. Here, a novel method to in-situ synthesize dual-layered carbon-coated silicon nanoparticles rich in carbon nanotubes has been reported as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. It exhibits outstanding lithium storage performance, maintaining a discharge capacity of 1007.1 mAh g −1 after 1000 charge/discharge cycles at current density of 0.5 A g −1 , demonstrating a capacity retention rate of 99.9%, while maintaining a low volumetric expansion rate of only 40% after 1000 cycles as compared to the value of 155% for the bare Si electrode investigated by the top-view digital photographs and cross-sectional SEM image. Even at 1 A g −1 high current density, the composite maintains a high reversible capacity of 705.4 mAh g −1 with 92.1% capacity retention rate after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. It is found that the better electric performance above is closely related with the carbon nanotubes outside the unique dual-layered carbon-coated silicon nanoparticles, which significantly enhances the electrode electrical conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient (≈10 −10  cm 2  s −1 ). This work provides a valuable technical route to develop silicon-based anode materials with high electrical conductivity and reactivity. Orbitally coupled dual-site engineering via cooperative w-si co-doping in RuO2 for highly durable and efficient acidic oxygen evolution

Xiaoxiao Duan,Shu Liu,Haiping Li,Xiuling Jiao,Yuguo Xia,Dairong Chen

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) offers a sustainable route for hydrogen production but remains limited by the instability of acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Ruthenium dioxide (RuO 2 ), though highly active, suffers from lattice oxygen participation leading to Ru dissolution and structural collapse. Here, we introduce a cooperative co-doping strategy that integrates tungsten (W) and silicon (Si) into the RuO 2 lattice to resolve the activity-stability dilemma. Structurally, W substitution induces local lattice strain that promotes Si incorporation, and the co-doping of large-radius W and small-radius Si balances lattice distortion and yields W-O-Ru-O-Si bridge motifs. These orbitally coupled sites modulate Ru-O covalency and suppress lattice-oxygen participation by ∼97%, thereby strongly suppressing Ru loss. The optimized catalyst delivers low overpotentials and exceptional durability, maintaining 8000 h at 10 mA cm −2 and 300 h at 1 A cm −2 in PEMWE cells. The synergistic dual-site coupling of W and Si decouples activity and stability locally while integrating them through cooperative orbital interactions, offering a rational design concept for durable Ru-based acidic OER catalysts and efficient PEMWE systems.

Tuning phase composition of Si-O-C to improve electrochemical performance of C/SiOC composites as anodes of lithium-ion batteries

Binbin Liu,Xiaorui Yang,Jian Ren,Meng Yang,Xiaodong Shen,Yong Kong

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC)-based materials hold significant potential as anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, low volume expansion, and excellent electrochemical stability. However, they exhibit low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor cycling stability. In this study, carbon/silicon oxycarbide (C/SiOC) composites were synthesized using a facile sol-gel method followed by ambient pressure drying and thermal treatment. The phase composition of SiOC was tuned by the oxygen content of precursors to achieve a high content of reversible phase for Li storage. Among four organosilanes including trimethylethoxysilane (TMES), 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCTS), methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), TMCTS leads to the highest content of SiO 3 C and SiO 2 C 2 phases owing to moderate oxygen content, which are responsible for Li storage. Hence, the C/SiOC composite with TMCTS as precursor exhibits significantly higher initial Coulombic efficiency (70.53%) than those with TMES, MTES, and TEOS as precursors (68.86%, 43.85%, and 33.11%), which this value exceeds the typical ICE range of 50–60% reported for other SiOC-based materials. It was demonstrated that a higher oxygen content of the precursor promotes the generation of Li 2 O during the lithiation process, which acts as a robust structural buffer to enhanced structural stability. TMCTS-derived C/SiOC composite exhibited excellent cyclic stability over long-term cycling, retaining 601.87 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A·g −1 . The results verify the critical role of phase composition of SiOC as anodes of LIBs, providing a new strategy to design SiOC-based materials with high electrochemical performance by tuning phase composition of SiOC from its precursor.

In Situ Construction of Multifunctional Organosilicon/Organic Hybrid Resin Coatings on Wood Surfaces Based on the PMHS Si–H Click Reaction

Ye Zhixuan,Chen Xingshu,Zhang Linxin,Wang Jun,Chen Hanxian,Zhang Xinxiang,Zhao Weiwei,Yuan Zhanhui

The abundant hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and porous structure make wood highly susceptible to moisture absorption from the environment, leading to issues such as deformation and decay. This work aims to in situ construct a multifunctional organosilicon/organic hybrid resin coating on the wood surface derived from the click reaction of polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), using PMHS, divinylbenzene (DVB), and the Karstedt catalyst. At room temperature, through the Si–H addition click reaction between PMHS and DVB, a cross-linked and rigid hybrid resin coating with a hardness of 94.00 HA is fabricated on the wood surface. Simultaneously, a dehydrogenation click reaction takes place between the Si–H groups of PMHS and the –OH groups on the wood surface, anchoring the hybrid resin coating to the wood via covalent bonds. These endow the hybrid resin coating with excellent mechanical stability. The low surface energy of organosilicon resin in the hybrid coating affords the modified wood with good waterproofness by decreasing the 24 h water absorption rate from 78.6% to 13.9%. Most importantly, the coating remains hydrophobic even after being immersed in an alkaline solution (pH = 13) for 24 h. SEM images of the coating after alkaline corrosion indicate that while the Si–O–Si skeleton of the organosilicon component is partially dissolved due to its susceptibility to alkali, the hydrophobic organic resin skeleton remains intact, imparting good alkali resistance to the hybrid resin coating. In summary, the organosilicon/organic hybrid coating constructed via the click reaction of PMHS on the wood surface effectively addresses the issue of poor alkali resistance commonly associated with traditional organosilicon coatings.
