Graphical This paper presents a urchin-like graphitized carbon-coated SnO₂ (GC-SnO₂) composite. Its spine-like carbon structure with branched networks alleviates stress concentration in SnO₂ anodes during cycling, enabling efficient ion transport. This design enhances high-rate performance and structural stability of lithium-ion batteries. Tin dioxide (SnO₂) has emerged as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and natural abundance. However, it suffers from severe volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation processes and limited rate capability. To address these challenges, this work rationally designed an urchin-like-graphitized carbon (GC)-SnO₂ microsphere composite (denoted for GC-SnO 2 ) through hydrothermal synthesis followed by controlled annealing. The hierarchical architecture consists of hollow SnO 2 nanospheres encapsulated within branched graphitized carbon protrusions, forming a hierarchically porous network. This structural design enables three key advantages: (1) accelerated Li + diffusion through interconnected channels, (2) stress buffering via spiny carbon branches to mitigate SnO 2 pulverization, and (3) enhanced conductivity through conformal GC coating. Benefiting from these synergistic features, the GC-SnO 2 anode exhibits outstanding cyclability, maintaining 765 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 . Notably, it achieves 538 mA h g −1 at 2 A g −1 over 1000 cycles, surpassing bare SnO 2 (89 mA h g −1 ) and exceeding the performance of most reported SnO 2 -based anodes. This work provides an effective strategy for designing stress-tolerant oxide/carbon composites toward high-energy-density LIBs.

The scalable fabrication of high-performance SnO2 electron transport layers (ETLs) via solution processing is hindered by colloidal aggregation and defect proliferation, which degrade perovskite solar cell (PSC) efficiency and stability. Here, we developed an in situ coordination strategy using l-aspartic acid monosodium salt (ASP-Na) to address these challenges. The carboxyl groups of ASP-Na form stable complexes with Sn4+, suppressing colloidal aggregation and enhancing interparticle electrostatic repulsion, thereby improving solution dispersion stability and reducing oxygen vacancy (OV) density. The resultant spray-coated SnO2 films exhibit compact morphology and optimized energy-level alignment. Buried interface analysis confirms a suppressed defect density on the perovskite surface close to ETL accompanied by interfacial-stress alleviation, facilitating vertically aligned perovskite grain growth and mitigating defect-mediated nonradiative recombination. Consequently, the ASP-Na-modified devices achieve a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.27%, with suppressed hysteresis and enhanced operational stability, retaining over 90% of their initial PCE after 1600 h of ambient aging. This work provides a defect suppression and stress relief paradigm, advancing the scalable solution-based fabrication of high-efficiency, industrially compatible perovskite photovoltaics.

In this study, a high-performance ammonia (NH 3 ) gas sensor based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-modified polyaniline (PANI)/tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) composite (Ag/PANI/SnO 2 ) was fabricated via a hydrothermal method. Gas-sensing performance evaluations revealed that incorporating PANI reduced both the response and recovery times of SnO 2 to NH 3 at room temperature. This phenomenon is attributed to the p-n heterojunction formed at the PANI/SnO 2 interface, which enhances charge carrier separation and mobility, thereby facilitating rapid modulation of the depletion layer width and the potential barrier height. Additionally, the integration of AgNPs significantly amplified the sensor's response to NH 3 , owing to the provision of additional oxygen free radicals (O 2 - (ads) ) that promote adsorption and reaction with NH 3 molecules. Compared to pristine SnO 2 , the Ag/PANI/SnO 2 composite exhibited a remarkable reduction in response time from 15.72 s to 1.18 s and in recovery time from 3.75 s to 1.23 s for 1000 ppm NH 3 . The response value increased by 382.07 times from 13.5 to 5158, representing a significant enhancement over pristine SnO 2 . Moreover, experiments showed that Ag/PANI/SnO 2 can be used to detect beef freshness based on monitoring the concentration of NH 3 generated from the reaction between microorganisms and amino acids on the beef surface during spoilage, thereby expanding the application scope of NH 3 sensors.

Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ), one transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is a cost-effective and promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in the alkaline electrolytes. Its electrocatalytic HER performance is unfortunately limited, originating from its un-conspicuous inherent catalytic activities and non-favorable adsorption sites for hydrogen. Herein, a tin disulfide/stannic oxide (SnS 2 /SnO 2 ) heterostructure is designed and grown on the nickel foam (denoted as SnS 2 /SnO 2 -NF). The SnS 2 /SnO 2 heterostructure introduces more active (100) facets or a high density of active sites, accelerates the diffusion kinetic of electrons and ions, lowers the water dissociation energies, and optimizes adsorption energies of hydrogen atoms. On this catalyst, superior HER performance is realized in an alkaline medium. An overpotential of 108 mV at a current density of −10 mA cm –2 with a Tafel slope of 50.1 mV dec –1 and long-term durability are achieved for HER in 1 M KOH. This work paves a new way to design high-performance HER electrocatalyst through facet engineering of the designed heterostructures.

Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) is one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity, suitable working potential and eco-friendliness. However, the low conductivity and excessive capacity attenuation resulting from serious volume expansion during alloying reactions greatly limit its application. Doping the substance with high conductivity into SnO 2 is regarded as an effective way to improve its electrochemical performance. In this work, the graphene@SnO 2 (G@SnO 2 ) nanofibers with the three-dimensional network structure were successfully fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent heat treatment. The effect of the doped graphene content on electrochemical performance of G@SnO 2 nanofibers as anode materials for LIBs was investigated in details, based on which the optimum doping content was confirmed (0.070 wt% graphene in the composite). The G@SnO 2 anode with 0.070 wt% graphene exhibited the best rating capability. A rate of 46.9 % was retained with the current density drastically increased from 0.1 A g −1 to 2 A g −1 and a high retained rate of 70.4 % was obtained when the current density was recovered to the initial value (the value of pure SnO 2 anode was 11.1 % and 66.3 %, respectively). This improvement should result from more active sites provided by graphene with the large specific surface area, which greatly accelerate electrochemical reactions. Besides that, graphene with the high conductivity also promotes the charge transfer. The anode also demonstrated the excellent cycling stability owing to the high specific discharge capacity of 349.7 mA h g −1 still reserved after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.1 A g −1 (the value of pure SnO 2 electrode was only 67.8 mA h g −1 ). The change should be attributed to the flexible structural characteristic of graphene, which effectively alleviates the volume expansion of anode materials during the cycling. This work confirms that introducing suitable content of graphene into SnO 2 is conducive to the improvement in electrochemical performance. Moreover, electrospinning is capable of realizing continuous production and suitable for large-scale preparation of nanofiber materials, which provides a possible strategy to meet the substantial demand for anode materials in next-generation LIBs.

Herein, the mesoporous tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) electrode materials with large specific surface areas were simply prepared through an initial solvothermal method in a mixed solvent of glycerol, isopropanol, and de-ionized water, along with a post annealing treatment in air. The average size of SnO 2 varied from 1 μm to 0.5 μm by changing the volume ratio of glycerol to isopropanol, and the product was denoted as SnO 2 -5/35 and SnO 2 -20/20, respectively. The electrochemical tests revealed that such SnO 2 electrode materials exhibited battery-type response. The SnO 2 -5/35 delivered the greatest specific capacity of 219.3 C g −1 , higher than 200.4 C g −1 for SnO 2 -20/20 electrode. In the configuration of hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device, the SnO 2 served as the cathode and activated carbon (AC) was utilized as the anode. The SnO 2 -5/35//AC HSC exhibited an energy density of 33.6 W h kg −1 at the power density of 946.9 W kg −1 . In contrast, the SnO 2 -20/20//AC HSC delivered an inferior specific energy of 28.5 W h kg −1 . Both HSCs showed excellent cyclic performance over 6000 cycles under a high current load of 10 A g −1 . These results indicate that the SnO 2 materials, especially SnO 2 -5/35, holds significant application potential in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Additionally, the current synthesis method can be extended to the preparation of other metal oxides with extraordinary electrochemical property for the practical applications in supercapacitors.

The commercial tin oxide (SnO 2 ) colloidal suspension is widely utilized as an electron transport layer (ETL) in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, despite significant efforts have been proposed to address bulk transport and interface recombination issues, the PSC efficiency is still limited to around 25%. In this study, the crucial role of the physicochemical characteristics of the SnO 2 colloidal suspension in shaping the morphology, electrical properties, and optical properties of the SnO 2 ETL is investigated. By controlling the pH value of the SnO 2 solution with weak acids such as carbonic acid, the reassembly of metal oxide nanoparticles into smaller sizes with more homogeneous dispersion and dense interconnections is successfully induced. Consequently, the resulting SnO 2 ETL exhibits enhanced crystallinity, high conductivity, low surface defects, and high optical transmittance. As a result, the efficiency of the target PSC is increased from 23.10% (control device) to 24.70%. This improvement is attributed to higher voltage, photocurrent, and fill factor compared to the relevant control samples. A similar device improvement using phosphoric acid is observed, indicating that the approach represents a universal technique to further enhance the quality of SnO 2 ETL for large-area, high-efficiency, and stable PSCs.

In this work, a simple one-step hydrothermal synthesis of La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites was studied. The structure, morphology, specific surface area, and chemical composition were determined by XRD , SEM, BET, and XPS techniques. The gas sensing performance of SnO 2 and La/SnO 2 nanocomposites with varied La doping dosages on n-butanol gas was systematically investigated. The results manifested that under the testing environment (50 % relative humidity and 30 °C), La doped SnO 2 nanocomposite sensor presented high response (69), excellent selectivity, good repeatability and long-time stability to n-butanol gas at 160 °C. Especially, the 7 mol% La doped SnO 2 sensor displayed a 5.9 times higher response to 50 ppm n-butanol than the SnO 2 sensor. In comparison with bare SnO 2 , La doping increased the band gap value of 7 mol% La/SnO 2 nanocomposite by 6.23 %, decreased particle size by 11.83 %, and increased the oxygen defect concentration by 6.07 %. Due to the synergistic effect of the above factors, the gas sensing performance of La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites towards n-butanol gas was enhanced. Therefore, La doped SnO 2 nanocomposites might be a potential gas sensing material for monitoring n-butanol gas at relatively high humidity.

The drastic volume change is the major drawback limiting stannic oxide as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. In this work, three-dimensional (3D) EG@SnO 2 @PANI composite is synthesized via solvothermal method followed by in-situ oxidative polymerization. Compare with the bare SnO 2 and EG@SnO 2 samples, the rate performance and cycling stability of the EG@SnO 2 @PANI sample have been enhanced, which can be attributed to the dual conductive networks of polyaniline (PANI) with expanded graphite (EG). As a result, the 3D EG@SnO 2 @PANI composite not only delivers a higher initial columbic efficiency of 77.8%, an excellent initial reversible capacity of 1021 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 but also still maintains at 408 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. And it exhibits enhanced rate performance, which remains at 270 mAh g −1 with 2 A g −1 . Consequently, preparing EG@SnO 2 @PANI is a suitable strategy to develop SnO 2 anode materials for lithium batteries.

Conventional strategies for synthesizing porous structures generally depend on template-based methods, which involve not only excessive consumption of templating agents but also the use of hazardous chemicals, such as hydrofluoric acid or strong alkalis. Therefore, designing an effective and convenient strategy to fabricate porous SnO2is of significant practical relevance. Herein, we developed a top-down strategy to fabricate SnO2electrode via a thermal oxidation gas-release route, resulting in a bulk 3D hierarchical architecture with interconnected porous channels. Employing a bottom-up strategy, the gel precursors of these porous SnO2materials were synthesized on a large scale via a simple, surfactant- and template-free route, in accordance with green chemistry principles. The results show that the porous SnO2(300) electrode materials possess a high specific surface area and exhibit favorable electrochemical energy-storage performance, achieving a high specific capacitance of 267.31 F g−1at a current density of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, based on the gel electrolyte of PVA/KOH, an asymmetric supercapacitor device assembled using porous SnO2(300) materials as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode (denoted as P-SnO2//AC) achieves an energy density of 32.49 Wh kg−1at the power density of 718.97 W kg−1. This work presents a simple, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and scalable approach to synthesize SnO2materials with an advanced structural design.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) may offer huge potential in photovoltaic conversion, yet their practical applications face one major obstacle: their low stability, or quick degradation of their initial efficiencies. Here, a new design scheme is presented to enhance the PSC stability by using low-temperature hydrothermally grown hierarchical nano-SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs). The ETL contains a thin compact SnO 2 layer underneath a mesoporous layer of SnO 2 nanosheets. The mesoporous layer plays multiple roles of enhancing photon collection, preventing moisture penetration and improving the long-term stability. Through such simple approaches, PSCs with power conversion efficiencies of ≈13% can be readily obtained, with the highest efficiency to be 16.17%. A prototypical PSC preserves 90% of its initial efficiency even after storage in air at room temperature for 130 d without encapsulation. This study demonstrates that hierarchical SnO 2 is a potential ETL for fabricating low-cost and efficient PSCs with long-term stability.

In this study, the poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)/SnO 2 nanocomposites (PProDOT/SnO 2 ) with different contents of SnO 2 were successfully prepared by using hand grinding and ball milling methods, respectively. The effects of the synthesis methods and SnO 2 on the structure and electrochemical properties of the nanocomposites were deeply discussed. The results showed the structure of composites were highly affected by the increasing amount of nano-SnO 2 particles in reaction medium of hand grinding method than ball milling method. And, the PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from ball milling method displayed similar absorption spectra, and ball milling method promoted the uniform distribution of nano-SnO 2 particles in PProDOT matrix. However, PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from hand grinding method displayed the higher specific surface area and stronger synergetic effects between PProDOT and SnO 2 than that of PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from ball milling method. As a result, the PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from hand grinding method showed higher electrochemical activity than PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from ball milling method. Moreover, the specific capacitance and cycle stability of PProDOT/SnO 2 nanocomposites from both methods were higher than respective pure PProDOT. Among all the nanocomposites, PProDOT/15wt%SnO 2 nanocomposite from hand grinding method possessed the highest specific capacitance (259 F g −1 ) with the best cycle performance (capacitance retention of 82% after 1,000 cycles).
