Effect of oscillatory frequency on densification and mechanical properties of Al2O3-Ti(C,N) composites fabricated by dynamic sinter forging

Mengwen Zhang,Fanyu Meng,Xiaoyu Chen,Na Cao,Lei Fan,Shoulei Yang

High-performance ceramic cutting tools require superior hardness and toughness under extreme temperatures; yet conventional sintering methods for Al 2 O 3 -Ti(C,N) composites often suffer from incomplete densification and grain coarsening. In this study, dynamic sinter forging (DSF) with oscillatory pressure amplitudes of 40 ± 40 MPa at 1600 °C is employed to regulate the densification behaviour and microstructural evolution of Al 2 O 3 -Ti(C,N) composites. The composite achieves a relative density above 99.9%, flexural strength of 1111 MPa, and hardness of 24.5 GPa at 15 Hz. A maximum fracture toughness of 5.44 MPa m 1/2 is obtained at 10 Hz. Microstructural observations reveal that moderate-frequency oscillation activate interfacial diffusion and stress-assisted plastic flow, promoting grain-boundary sliding and compact bonding to form a fine-grained and homogeneous structure. These results confirm that frequency-controlled DSF facilitates simultaneous enhancement of strength and toughness, providing a valid route for fabricating high-performance Al 2 O 3 -based cutting ceramics with optimized microstructural designs.

Reinforced stepwise dissociation of water molecules via U 5f-O 2p-Ti 3d gradient orbital coupling for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Xiaochuan Deng,Tong Liu,Xudong Wu,Qijue Lin,Hanlin Liu,Han Yang,Xun Yang,Maoyin Wang,Kaiguo Chen,Jiayu Dai,Tao Chen,Wenkun Zhu

Actinide (An)-based materials have shown fascinating electronic and bonding properties related to f orbitals, demonstrating significant potential in catalysis. However, the catalytic utility of uranium is constrained by its low electron affinity and high reduction potential. In this study, we designed an asymmetric f-p-d gradient orbital coupling strategy through spatial engineering of the hybridization among U 5f, O 2p, and Ti 3d orbitals on TiO 2 nanorod arrays (U/TiO 2 NRA). This asymmetric 5f-2p-3d structure modulates the band structure to improve light absorption capacity and prolong the lifetime of charge carriers, while optimizing the adsorption energetics of reaction intermediates, thus enabling efficient stepwise water dissociation. The fabricated photoanode achieves a noteworthy photocurrent density and excellent operational stability, outperforming most reported TiO 2 -based catalysts. Through theoretical analyses, it is verified that the 5f buffer band at the asymmetric U−O−Ti sites, mediated by 5f-2p-3d gradient orbital coupling, facilitates electron transfer, which effectively promotes the adsorption, activation, and stepwise dissociation of water molecules at the dual atomic sites. In this work, a new design paradigm is established for the development of high-performance An-based catalytic materials.

Dual confinement engineering in Ti-MOFs for stabilizing cobalt sites and regulating PMS activation toward singlet oxygen-mediated tetracycline degradation

Zhibang Gao,Qiumin Wang,Chi Wang,Shuangyou Bao,Fei Wang,Kai Li,Yi Mei

The performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes is often limited by inefficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) utilization and instability of active metal sites. Herein, a dual-confinement strategy is proposed by integrating spatial pore confinement and coordination confinement into Ti-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to regulate PMS activation. Compared with Ti-BPDC, the pyridine-functionalized Ti-BPYDC framework provides Co N coordination sites, enabling stronger stabilization and electronic modulation of Co active centers. As a result, the Co-Ti-BPYDC/PMS system achieves enhanced tetracycline degradation (98.83% within 30 min), higher reaction kinetics (0.54 min −1 ), and improved mineralization (44.73%). Mechanistic studies reveal that the dual-confinement structure promotes interfacial electron transfer, stabilizes the Co 3+ /Co 2+ redox cycle, and favors a singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )-dominated non-radical pathway, while suppressing Co leaching. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability and resistance to environmental interference. This work provides a general strategy for designing efficient and stable MOF-based catalysts for advanced oxidation processes.

Cascaded BiS bridges and Ti-VS vacancy restore centers trigger parallel dual S-scheme exciton highways for ultrafast photocatalytic redox

HaoTian Wu,WenYu Luo,EnZhou Liu,Bing Wang,LinYu Jiao,Zhuo Li,XiaoXun Ma

The performance of photocatalysts is often limited by charge recombination and sluggish kinetics at heterojunction interfaces. This study develops a multi-strategy interfacial modulation approach by constructing Bi S covalent bonds at the BiVO 4 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S(MCS) interface to serve as electron transport “bridges”, while simultaneously filling sulfur vacancies (V S ) in MCS with Ti atoms to eliminate recombination centers. This dual optimization of interfacial charge dynamics is realized in a BiVO 4 /MCS/TiO 2 (BMT) ternary system. The design facilitates an efficient dual S-scheme heterojunction that, driven by an interfacial built-in electric field, enables highly efficient separation of photogenerated carriers while maximizing redox capability. Under visible-light irradiation, the composite achieves a degradation rate of 89.51% for norfloxacin within 30 min, along with excellent cycling stability. Combined spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that the Bi S bonds significantly reduce the interfacial charge-transfer barrier, while the Ti-V S structure effectively suppresses carrier recombination. The synergy between these two mechanisms is key to constructing an efficient S-scheme charge-transfer pathway. This work provides a clear strategy for designing high-performance photocatalytic systems through the cooperative integration of interfacial bonding and defect engineering. We developed a TiO 2 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/BiVO 4 ternary system with dual interfacial modulation using Bi S covalent bonds as electron bridges and Ti filling of sulfur vacancies to construct a dual S-scheme heterojunction that suppresses charge recombination and enhances redox capacity. This synergy enables efficient norfloxacin degradation and stability under visible light. Download: Download high-res image (139KB) Download: Download full-size image

Photo-driven self-regeneration in Ti-doped bismuth oxide: A sustainable catalytic platform for chloride removal from acidic industrial wastewater

Liyang XIN,Jiahao ZHANG,Qian YANG,Liqiang QI

The treatment of high-chloride acidic industrial wastewater, such as that from wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) and metallurgical effluents, presents a significant environmental engineering challenge due to the high corrosivity of chloride and its interference with downstream processes. Bismuth oxide (Bi₂O₃)-based precipitation shows promise; however, it is hindered by severe surface passivation caused by BiOCl, which leads to self-limiting reactivity. In this study, we engineered a titanium-doped bismuth oxide (Bi₁₂TiO₂₀) photocatalyst that addresses this limitation through a synergistic mechanism of "adsorption–precipitation–photoregeneration." Under optimal dark conditions (pH = 0.1, [Cl⁻]₀ = 5000 mg/L, for 2 h), Bi₁₂TiO₂₀ achieved a chloride removal efficiency of 96.4 %, significantly exceeding that of pure Bi₂O₃, which was 64.4 %. The introduction of simulated solar irradiation at pH = 1.0 further enhanced the removal efficiency from 54.0 % to 67.2 %, demonstrating effective photo-enhancement. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) spectroscopy, combined with kinetic modeling and electron localization function (ELF) calculations, revealed that Ti⁴⁺ serves as both a structural promoter—weakening Bi–O bonds to facilitate Bi³ ⁺ release—and a surface Lewis acid site that activates Cl⁻ adsorption. Importantly, photogenerated holes (h⁺) decompose the BiOCl passivation layer via the reaction BiOCl + 2 h⁺ → Bi³ ⁺ + ½O₂ + Cl₂↑, enabling in-situ regeneration of active interfaces and establishing a sustainable catalytic cycle. This work presents an efficient material for the initial bulk removal of chlorides, while also establishing a novel design paradigm for self-regenerative, energy-efficient water treatment technologies.

Insight into the performance and mechanism of low-cost phytic acid modified Zn-Al-Ti LMO for U(VI) removal

Yawen Cai,Yapeng Ma,Jinghua Feng,Mingyu Zhu,Xin Wang,Zhimin Lv,Ming Fang,Xiaoli Tan,Xiangke Wang

The efficient treatment of uranium (U) is an important and challenging issue regarding radioactive wastes management. Adsorbent with high efficacy, low-cost is urgently needed for alleviating the contamination of U-containing wastewaters. To solve these issues, we report a series of phytic acid (PA) modified Zn-Al-Ti layered mixed metal oxides (Zn-Al-Ti LMO@PAs) in this work, which shows the adsorption capacity as high as ∼1486 mg/g and could be easily obtained through a facile post-modification method. The adsorption performance of Zn-Al-Ti LMO@PAs for U(VI) are carefully estimated through batch experiments. With the aid of batch experiments and various characterization techniques, PA in Zn-Al-Ti LMO@PAs is found to make the most contribution for the chelation of U(VI), which favors for the adsorption selectivity and capability. The Zn-Al-Ti LMO@PAs are potential cost-effective adsorbents to remove the U(VI) in wastewaters.

Simultaneous pollutant degradation and electricity generation by photocatalytic fuel cell with visible light responsive N-CQDs/Bi2MoO6/CuMn2O4/Ti photoanode

Jitai Li,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

In this work, an efficient nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CQDs) doped Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 heterojunction photoanode (N-CQDs/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 ) was successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal-coupling strategy, and it was integrated with a Cu cathode to build a PFC for concurrent electricity generation and organic pollutant degradation. Approximately 92% of RhB was eliminated, accompanied by photocurrent and power output values of 8.3 mA·cm −2 and 51.0 μW·cm −2 , respectively. In addition, the open-circuit voltage and photoconversion efficiency were measured as 0.60 V and 0.12%. The superior performance of PFC originates from the integrated action of carrier separation of Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 Z-scheme heterojunction and electron-storage function of N-CQDs, which reinforces visible-light harvesting, suppressed charge recombination, accelerates the interfacial electron transfer and sustains strong redox potentials. The degradation process involved the participation of both radical species (•OH, •O 2 ⁻ ) and non-radical species (h + ). Due to the formation of local Schottky-like contact between Bi 2 MoO 6 /CuMn 2 O 4 and N-CQDs, N-CQDs act as an efficient electron mediator, which facilitates the generation of reactive oxygen species and further enhances the degradation efficiency. This work provides a new insight into constructing quantum-dot-mediated heterojunction photoanode.

CeVO4-Ti nanozymes-laden dendrobium officinale-derived nanovesicles combined with hydrogel to promote diabetic wound healing by modulating mitochondrial function

Yang Yang,Jingjian Liu,Jiye Zhang,Shuya Zhang,Jiazhen Wu,Qizhang Wang,Guangyi Yang,Qinhua Chen

Refractory diabetic wound is characterized by excessive oxidative stress and inadequate angiogenesis, both of which are primarily caused by mitochondrial dysfunction. Although nanozymes exhibit multiple enzyme-mimicking antioxidant activities, challenges such as immune rejection, limited catalytic activity, and poor biocompatibility remain. Here in, a novel therapeutic system based on plant exosome nanovesicle-incorporated nanozymes was designed to mitigate oxidative stress and promote healing in diabetic wounds by targeting and restoring mitochondrial function. Titanium-doped cerium vanadate (CeVO 4 -Ti) nanozymes with multiple enzyme catalytic activities had been rationally designed. The surface of CeVO 4 -Ti was modified with triphenylphosphine (TPP) to endow mitochondrial targeting. To enhance biosafety and delivery, the nanozymes were further encapsulated within dendrobium officinale-derived nanovesicles (DOEVs) and integrated into a dopamine-methacrylated hyaluronic acid (DHM) hydrogel, forming a composite system (DOEVs@CTT/DHM). DOEVs@CTT/DHM could effectively mimic the activity of natural enzymes, eliminate reactive oxygen species, reconstruct blood vessels, and promote re-epithelialization, thereby facilitating wound healing from multiple perspectives. Crucially, it activated the Nrf2/Parkin/Pink1 pathway to regulate mitophagy, thereby revitalizing mitochondrial function and then alleviating oxidative stress. This study presents a novel strategy for mitochondrial regulation, advancing the development of multifunctional nanozyme-based biomaterials for wound healing.

The effects of potential and solar input on Z-scheme C3N4-TiO2 nanotubes @ Ti electrode in a broad potential window

Xuelan Hou,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

Construction of Z -scheme graphitic carbon nitride-titanium dioxide nanotubes (C 3 N 4 -TNT) has been known useful to optimize the band structure for improving photon capture and for accelerating charge carrier separation and transfer rate in photoelectrochemical water splitting (PECWS) cells. However, the reported operating potential window in a PECWS cell, often in 0 – 1.23 V RHE (volt versus reversible hydrogen electrode) plus its overpotential, is too narrow to understand the C 3 N 4 -TNT electrode. Herein, a broad potential window of −0.5 − 2.5 V RHE is applied to C 3 N 4 -TNT@Ti and recorded via the polarization test under chopped sunlight to analyze the effect of both electrons from external electrical circuit and photons from simulated sunlight. In 0 – 2.5 V RHE , the potential enhances the photocurrent density. For example, at 1.6 V RHE , the C 3 N 4 -TNT sample exhibits 1.8-time higher photocurrent density than that of pure TNT. In −0.5 − 0 V RHE , i.e., both samples do not give photo-current response. In addition, for advanced water oxidation/reduction beyond WS to oxygen/hydrogen, a large potential window will be expected. Further, the light capture ability, the charge carrier recombination rate, and the electron flow path through the C 3 N 4 -TNT junction without and with reverse/forward potentials are discussed to elucidate the effect of the applied potential.

Environment-friendly and efficient electrochemical degradation of sulfamethoxazole using reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays-based Ti membrane coated with Sb-SnO2

Weichen Zeng,Han Zhang,Rui Wu,Luming Liu,Guibai Li,Heng Liang

This study focused on the preparation, characterization, and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal performance of the SnO 2 -coated reactive electrochemical membrane (REM). This REM was fabricated by loading SnO 2 on the reduced TiO 2 nanotube arrays (RTNA)-based Ti membrane (TM). Regarding the dopant for SnO 2 , Sb was more effective in boosting the electrocatalytic activity than Bi, and the energy consumption for Sb-SnO 2 -coated REM (TM/RTNA/ATO) was lower than Bi-SnO 2 -coated REM (TM/RTNA/BTO). As for the internal layer, RTNA provided TM/RTNA/ATO with more electroactive surface areas and prolonged the service lifetime. Compared with batch mode, the SMX removal efficiency in flow-through mode was increased up to 8.4-fold. The SMX degradation performances were also affected by fluid velocity, current density, initial SMX concentration, and electrolyte concentration. The synergistic effects of • OH oxidation and direct electron transfer were responsible for the effective removal of SMX. TM/RTNA/ATO was proved to be stable and durable by multi-cycle and accelerated lifetime tests. Its extensive applicability was verified with high removal efficiencies of SMX in the surface water and wastewater effluent. These results demonstrate the promise of TM/RTNA/ATO for water treatment applications.

Storage-reduction strategy for NOx reduction from gas turbine exhaust with W–Ti-CeOx catalyst in natural gas power plants

Ningyuan Wang,Xiaoqiang Wang,Yue Liu,Zhongbiao Wu

Traditional vanadium-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) deNO x catalyst can hardly adapt to the gas conditions (much high NO 2 /NO x ratio at lower temperature) of the start-up and low loading periods for a gas turbine . Therefore, a W–Ti-CeO x catalyst with NO x storage and reduction (NSR) function was developed in this work for gas turbine exhaust NO x elimination. The experimental results reveal that W–Ti-CeO x catalyst exhibits high NO 2 adsorption capacity at relatively low temperature while that is quite low for V–W/TiO 2 . The abundant surface Ce 3+ species can be mainly responsible for its high adsorption ability owing to the reaction between NO 2 and Ce 3+ to form nitrate/nitrite species and NO. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of W–Ti-CeO x can easily regenerate at medium–high temperature and NH 3 -SCR reaction. Furthermore, W–Ti-CeO x also shows good NH 3 -SCR activity, which can fulfill the deNO x process at high temperature. The addition of W and Ti into ceria can enhance the surface acidity and redox ability, thereby increasing the SCR activity. This work proposes a novel storage-reduction strategy for NO x elimination throughout the operation of gas turbines.

Ultralong-lifetime Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anodes with a strong metal–support interaction for efficient electrochemical mineralization of perfluorooctanoic acid

Jianjun Zhou,Tian Wang,Cheng Cheng,Fan Pan,Yunqing Zhu,Hongrui Ma,Junfeng Niu

Electrocatalytic oxidation is regarded as an effective technique for decomposing refractory organic compounds like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, achieving highly efficient and long-life electrodes is still a great challenge. Herein, Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anodes consisting of Pt4+ and Pt0 species were fabricated by combining modified microemulsion technology with a calcination process, in which Pt nanoparticles were highly dispersed and encapsulated in Ru–Ir composite oxides to form a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) structure. The as-constructed SMSI layer on the Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anode resulted in the improvement of the charge transfer capability and also increased the degradation (99.30%) and mineralization (91.32%) of PFOA during the electrochemical oxidation process. Notably, the service lifetime of Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anodes was remarkably improved from 24 to 42.3 h compared to commercial Ti/RuO2–IrO2 anodes. Moreover, the possible degradation mechanism of PFOA was also speculated through the detection of short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids and reactive radicals. These results not only revealed that the concept and methodology of SMSI could be an effective way for constructing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts but also greatly advanced fundamental understanding.
