Prevalence and Genomic Characterization of mcr-1-Positive Escherichia coli from Livestock in Hunan Province, China (2016–2021)

Xu Jialin,Yan Bohu,Fu Qifu,Li Haoyu,Jiang Zonghan,Zhou Rushun,Chen Xiaojun,Sun Zhiliang,Wang Yanan,Li Jiyun

In response to the critical challenge of colistin resistance in animal production, we examined the occurrence and genetic features of mcr-1 -positive E. coli isolates collected from livestock in Hunan province, China, between 2016 and 2021. A total of 1,358 animal samples from chickens and pigs were collected and screened. Monitoring data indicates that nineteen mcr-1 -positive E. coli isolates (1.40%) were identified, and all were resistant to colistin and tetracycline. The prevalence rate of mcr-1 positive E. coli has significantly declined since 2017 and has remained consistently low. Most isolates (89.47%) exhibited multidrug resistance and carried multiple antibiotic resistance genes, including tet (A) , sul3, bla TEM-1B, while a subset of strains (21.05%) harbored quinolone resistance-associated point mutations in gyrA , parC , and parE . Multi-locus sequence typing identified 14 sequence types, with ST48 being the most frequent (21.05%), and five clonal complexes, with CC10 as the predominant lineage (52.63%). Plasmid analysis revealed that 68.42% of the isolates carried plasmids, predominantly IncX4 (36.84%), and 57.89% of isolates harbored conjugative plasmids with complete relaxase and MPF system components. The mcr-1 gene was found within three main genetic arrangements: (i) mcr-1-pap2, (ii)IS Apl1-mcr-1-pap2, and (iii) IS Apl1-mcr-1-pap2- IS Apl1 . These findings highlight the potential for dissemination of mcr-1 in animal-derived E. coli and underscore the importance of monitoring and controlling antimicrobial resistance in livestock.

On-demand Peelable UV-curable Adhesives with Superior Bonding Strength: Rational Molecular Engineering of Cohesion-adhesion Synergy

Liu Wen-Qian,Wang Peng,Yuan Hao-Kai,Zhang Lin,Chen Bin,Jiang Hong-Fei,Wang Yi-Ran,Wang Lu,Li Shu-Sheng,Zong Chuan-Yong

On-demand peelable adhesives represent a pivotal green chemistry research avenue; however, they confront a critical challenge in reconciling robust interfacial bonding strength with efficient peelability. Herein, a cohesion-adhesion synergy-guided molecular engineering strategy was developed to fabricate UV-curable adhesives with the integrated properties of superior bonding strength and hot water-triggered peelability. The adhesive was formulated with custom-synthesized difunctional polyurethane acrylate (PM1) as the crosslinker, which was blended with complementary acrylate monomers. PM1 constructed a robust yet adaptable crosslinking network to ensure high cohesive strength; its polytetrahydrofuran diol- and polyester diol-derived soft segments endowed the network with superior molecular chain mobility and stress dissipation capacity. Additionally, the incorporation and compositional optimization of polar acrylate monomers modulate the cohesive energy, surface wettability, and interfacial adhesion of the substrate, thus realizing synergistic enhancement of the cohesive and adhesive properties. Systematic experimental investigations and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to determine the structure-property relationships governing the composition, bonding performance, and mechanical properties of UV-curable adhesives. The optimized formulation achieved high shear strength (>5 MPa, glass substrates), excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength: 12.80 MPa, elongation at break: 313.70%), and good thermal stability (5 wt% weight-loss temperature > 240 °C). Notably, the developed adhesives realize rapid, complete, and residue-free debonding within 3 min of immersion in 60 °C water, where hydration-induced disruption of adhesive-substrate contact attenuates interfacial interactions. Additionally, the peeled adhesive can be recycled repeatedly after drying while retaining its excellent interfacial bonding performance. This study provides a versatile and scalable strategy for the rational design of high-performance functional adhesives, thereby paving the way for recycling electronic products and sustainable manufacturing. He JiaQing,Li JiaHao,Dong HanYang,Chen DeYun,Linghu ChangHong,Zhou Qiang,Zhu YinBo,Sheng ShuRong,Wu HengAn,Feng Wei

Switchable adhesion underpins emerging technologies in robotics, microelectronics, and biomedical engineering. However, achieving switchable surface adhesion that can adapt to substrates with varying material compositions and surface roughness, while simultaneously enabling real-time and wireless monitoring of adhesion strength, poses a substantial challenge. Here, we present a eutectogel-based system that integrates electrothermally switchable adhesion with wireless sensing capability for in situ monitoring of adhesion forces. The switching mechanism is systematically elucidated through a combination of mechanical analysis and molecular-level characterization. The integration of machine-learning assisted adhesion sensing with dynamic gripping and locomotion enables safer and smarter robotic operation in adhesion joints, smart grippers and climbing robots. Demonstrations in adhesion-aware sensing, robotic grasping, and wall climbing validate the system’s practical utility, establishing a pathway toward next-generation intelligent adhesive interfaces that are both adaptive and self-perceptive.

Microfibrillated Cellulose/Acetylated Starch Aerogel Loaded with 4-Terpineol for use as a Fruit and Vegetable Preservation Pad

Sheng Jie,Song Shuxuan,Wang Wenbo,Zhang Jialong,Wang Jiaxin,Chen Ziyi,Sun Maoquan,Huang Honghua,Song Yishan

This study utilised microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and acetylated starch (AS) as structural frameworks, with 4- terpineol (4-TA) serving as the antimicrobial agent. A multifunctional biodegradable aerogel with water absorption, antibacterial, cushioning and slow-release properties has been developed as a freshness-preserving pad for fruit and vegetables. The system analysed the effects of different mass ratios of MFC/AS on the density, porosity, mechanical properties, water absorption rate, and oil absorption rate of aerogels. Additionally, the release characteristics, antibacterial properties, and biodegradability of the aerogel were investigated. The results indicate that, the aerogel with a MFC/AS mass ratio of 1:3 has the best comprehensive performance, exhibiting a compressive strength of 0.030 ± 0.002 MPa and an springiness of 0.577 ± 0.031. It also exhibits exceptional water and oil absorption capacities, reaching 1549.40 ± 38.29% and 3887.33 ± 86.56%, respectively. Moreover, it also exhibits fine sustained-release properties, antibacterial performance and biodegradability. Following 240 h of release, more than 50% of 4-TA remained encapsulated within the aerogel. The inhibition zone diameters against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 30.37 ± 1.25 mm and 32.25 ± 1.04 mm, respectively. The application of aerogel to strawberry preservation extends their shelf life from 1 to 3 days, outperforming commercially available preservation pads. Therefore, this study offers a novel approach for the development of fruit and vegetable preservation pads. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Development of an intelligent framework for photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 with enhanced selectivity using 3D/2D perovskite bilayer composites

D Subash T,Sukanya M.,Haripriya D.,Saranya K.,R Balaji S,Pandi V. Samuthira

Perovskite bilayer composites offer an effective approach for enhancing photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance and operational stability under visible light irradiation. However, their practical implementation is limited by complex material design processes and difficulty in optimizing catalytic parameters for high selectivity. To address these issues, this paper gives an intelligent technique for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CH 4 with enhanced selectivity using 3D/2D perovskite bilayer composites. The proposed method integrates the Wasserstein Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (WDCGAN) with a Starfish Optimization Algorithm (SFOA). The main objective is to maximize CH 4 yield and selectivity while minimizing charge recombination losses in the photocatalytic process. The WDCGAN model is employed to predict photocatalytic activity based on material and structural features, while SFOA optimizes key catalyst parameters to achieve improved reaction performance. The proposed method demonstrates better performance than existing techniques, including the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), as evaluated and compared using the MATLAB platform. The proposed SFOA-WDCGAN method demonstrates the highest R 2 of 0.99, accuracy of 99.5%, and efficiency of 98.5%, indicating improved performance compared to existing methods. The proposed strategy enables the design of stable and high-performance 3D/2D perovskite bilayer catalysts, significantly enhancing photocatalytic CO 2 reduction efficiency, CH 4 yield, and selectivity, making it promising for sustainable fuel generation applications.

Full vision adaptation in mixed-light conditions enabled by dynamic water adsorption/desorption

Zhu Jia,Liu Wantao,Huang Wanxin,Chen Xiangjie,Feng Xuewei,Luo Xin,Xu Kai,Gao Min,Ling Haifeng,Song Chaoyun,Cheng Huanyu,Lin Yuan

Mimicking the human eye’s ability to autonomously adapt to diverse and mixed illumination conditions remains a fundamental challenge in artificial vision systems. Although substantial progress has been made in materials and device engineering, current adaptive vision architectures still depend heavily on complex circuitry or algorithms and are typically restricted to uniform illumination owing to the strong intensity-dependence of photosensitivity. Here, this work presents a highly adaptive TiO₂/PEDOT:PSS photomemristor that leverages the tunable conductivity of PEDOT:PSS together with the optoelectronic response of TiO₂. The photothermal effect dynamically modulates the water absorption/desorption equilibrium in PEDOT:PSS, enabling reversible suppression or enhancement of photosensitivity under bright or dim illumination, respectively. By combining with artificial neural networks (ANNs), the artificial vision system based on TiO₂/PEDOT:PSS photomemristor arrays achieves a high accuracy of 91.3% in image recognition under mixed-light conditions—without the need for complex circuitry or algorithms. This work may establish a new approach for designing autonomous, efficient, and high-performance neuromorphic vision systems to advance the development of autonomous driving and humanoid robots.

Synthesis of HEDP/PMMA Submicron Capsules for Long-Term Scale Inhibition in Oil Reservoirs

Ming Hui,Li Xuefeng,Sha Zhentao,Xiang Yuhe,Liu Yi,Li Yang,Wu Mei

To address the short effective duration of conventional scale inhibitors in mature oilfields, hydroxyethyl diphosphonic acid (HEDP) / Methyl methacrylate (PMMA) submicron capsule were engineered via reverse microemulsion evaporation for sustained release. Optimized synthesis (core-wall ratio 1:6, Span80/W ratio 1:2, 3.5 h curing) achieved 95.3% encapsulation efficiency. The submicron capsule maintained 70–90% scale inhibition efficiency against CaCO₃ over 8 h. Flow tests demonstrated exceptional retention: submicron capsule withstood > 860 pore volumes (PV) before breakthrough, outperforming liquid inhibitors (160 PV) by 5.4-fold. Pretreatment with Cetyltrimethylammonium(CTAB) bromide further enhanced adsorption. Crucially, mechanistic studies revealed surface charge (zeta potential) as the dominant retention controller, while particle size showed negligible influence. This study proposes a surface-charge-dominated retention strategy for long-term scale inhibition in oilfields, which may contribute to more sustained scale control.

Rapid, sensitive, and convenient magnetic surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy substrate based on Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH for aflatoxin B1 detection

Guo Hao,Zhang Baowen,Bai Ziwei,Miao Rusen,Zhang Kaiyue,Wang Meng,Tian Fei

A rapid, sensitive, and convenient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate was developed using Fe₃O₄/C as the magnetic core and SiO₂-SH as the shell for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Ultra-small Fe₃O₄/C nanoparticles (NPs) with an average size of 6.30 ± 0.68 nm and excellent magnetic responsiveness were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method, followed by the deposition of a uniform SiO₂ shell, followed by thiol-group functionalization to yield Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH. The magnetic core enables instantaneous separation of the substrate from solution after AFB1 adsorption, eliminating the need for centrifugation or filtration. When employed as a SERS substrate, significant enhancement of the characteristic Raman peak at 1482 cm⁻ 1 was observed across AFB1 concentrations of 0.1–10 μg/mL. Notably, the peak intensity at 10 μg/mL exceeded that of solid AFB1 powder. Comprehensive characterization (TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and vibrating sample magnetometry) confirmed the core–shell structure, high crystallinity, and strong magnetic properties. The prepared Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH nanocomposite offers a low-cost, easily recyclable, and noble-metal-free platform, demonstrating strong potential for trace AFB1 monitoring in herbal medicines and food products.

Plant-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Selective Cu2+ Detection and In Vivo Fluorescence Imaging

Cai Shaoyu,Wang Yifan,Yi Hongsheng,Zhou Jinjing,Pei Shuchen,Li Qin

This study employed Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm. as a carbon source and carbamide as a nitrogen source to conduct a straightforward one-step hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs). The N-CQDs were fully characterized in terms of their morphological features, chemical constituents, and optical behaviors. The synthesized N-CQDs exhibited the highest fluorescence intensity with excitation and emission wavelengths set at 305 nm and 382 nm, respectively. Notably, copper ions (Cu 2+ ) could induce obvious fluorescence quenching of the N-CQDs, endowing the system with high sensitivity and selectivity. The limit of detection (LOD) for Cu 2+ ions was determined to be 3.52 µM within the linear range of 1–10 µM. The fluorescence lifetime of N-CQDs was shortened from 3.38 ns to 3.27 ns after adding Cu 2+ . The analysis shows that the N-CQDs were selective and sensitive to Cu 2+ due to the static quenching mechanism. Furthermore, this method was applied to analyze the content of Cu 2+ in actual samples with satisfying results. More importantly, studies in zebrafish embryos and Arabidopsis thaliana verified the biocompatibility of N-CQDs at low concentrations, allowing efficient in vivo bioimaging, while Cu 2+ co-exposure caused fluorescence reduction. A facile strategy for synthesizing N-CQDs from natural plant-derived precursors is proposed in this work, revealing their great prospects as both fluorescent probes and bioimaging agents. Preparation and Microstructural Control of Waterborne Polyurethane/Graphene Aerogel for Efficient Oil Absorption

Wang Yujie,Ju Xinyi,Zhu Wei,Jiang Xueliang,You Feng,Yao Chu

Graphene aerogel shows great potential for oil absorption and favorable microstructure is the key for realization of stable structure and excellent performance. In this work, tannic acid was used as a cross-linking agent to bridge the graphene oxide nanosheets and the waterborne polyurethane molecular chains, and a stable graphene aerogel was constructed after self-assembly and reduction reaction under suitable pH. The results show that the waterborne polyurethane/tannic acid/graphene composite aerogels (WTGA) prepared at different pH values have distinctly different properties. Compared with acidic condition and alkaline condition, WTGA prepared under neutral pH conditions has stable three-dimensional structure, due to the appropriate degrees of graphene oxide reduction and the effective construction of cross-linked network. The water contact angle of prepared WTGA reaches 133.2 o and it can withstand reiterative compression at 70% strain, exhibiting outstanding hydrophobicity and compression resilience. Meanwhile, the WTGA shows ultra-high absorption capacity for various oils and organic solvents, and the saturated absorption capacity for soybean oil can be up to 139.4 g/g. Significantly, the oil-saturated aerogel can be regenerated via simple squeezing for oil recovery, maintaining over 90% of its absorption performance after 10 absorption-desorption cycles, revealing a wide prospect of application in oil absorption.

Dimethyl trisulfide inhibits Alternaria alternata by disrupting reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis and energy metabolism

Qu Huan,Yang Ershuai,Li Zongze,Li Yaoxuan

Dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) exhibits potent antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata , yet its molecular mode of action has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we analyzed the key gene expression and phenotypic alterations in A. alternata after DMTS treatment to clarify its potential antifungal mechanism, and to provide insight into possible fungicidal targets. Given the pronounced antifungal activity of DMTS, transcriptomic analysis was performed to profile global gene expression changes in A. alternate following DMTS exposure, complemented by bioinformatics analysis and real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) validation. A total of 2,321 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 934 up-regulated and 1,387 down-regulated genes. RT-qPCR validation confirmed that the gene expression trends were consistent with the transcriptomic data, supporting the reliability of the sequencing results. GO functional annotation and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that the DEGs were associated with peroxisome formation, fatty acid β -oxidation, cellular ROS homeostasis, and energy metabolism pathways such as the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. In line with these transcriptional changes, DMTS exposure caused substantial intracellular ROS accumulation, impaired mitochondrial activity, reduced ATP production and DNA fragmentation, reflecting significant bioenergetic impairment and redox imbalance. Collectively, these findings suggest that DMTS inhibits fungal growth by disrupting peroxisome formation, mitochondrial function, and triggering excessive ROS-mediated oxidative damage. Simultaneously, DMTS impedes fatty acid β -oxidation and the TCA cycle, resulting in significant cellular ATP depletion. These combined effects ultimately inhibited the growth of A. alternata .

A point-of-care testing platform for pathogen nucleic acid analysis utilizing paper-based extraction and portable qPCR

Li Jiahao,Zhang Chuhan,Ou Zongdong,Zhao Yiran,Ji Zhirun,Feng Yufan,Chen Ting-Hsuan,Yang Zhugen,Wu Minghui,Mao Ruiqi,Zhang Chunyang,Chu Rui,Yang Xinyi,Liu Tianmi,Shan Yanke,Liu Fei

Rapid and reliable diagnostic methods are crucial for controlling animal disease outbreaks and reducing mortality, especially when effective drugs or vaccines are unavailable. While real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) remains the gold standard for nucleic acid detection due to its superior sensitivity and specificity, conventional workflows are inherently cumbersome. Traditional extraction and amplification processes typically require 1.5 to 3 h, with further delays incurred by transporting samples to centralized laboratories. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a point-of-care testing platform for on-site pathogen diagnostics. This system synergistically combines a centrifuge-free, glass fiber (GF) paper-based nucleic acid extraction card, room-temperature-stable lyophilized qPCR reagents, and a portable qPCR instrument. By eliminating the dependency on bulky benchtop equipment and cold-chain logistics, this platform streamlines lysis, extraction, and amplification, delivering sample-to-answer results within 45 min. The optimized system demonstrated excellent analytical sensitivity, achieving limits of detection (LoDs) of 10 copies/μL for the N gene of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and 50 copies/μL for the PirA gene of Vibrio parahaemolyticus AHPND (VP AHPND ). Furthermore, clinical validation using complex field samples yielded a 100% diagnostic concordance rate with standard laboratory equipment. This study highlights the potential of the proposed system for early diagnosis and monitoring of animal diseases, providing a promising solution for rapid on-site screening in resource-constrained settings.
