The in vitro expanded seed cells and the supraphysiological doses of exogenous growth factors both pose huge safety risks in bone regeneration. In this study, a novel IL-8/tDM/PLGA composite scaffold was developed, where chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) and transferable decellularized matrix (tDM) were uniformly overlaid on exterior and interior surfaces of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) porous substrates. The in vitro experiments confirmed that the synergy of tDM and IL-8 achieved the obvious promotion of osteogenesis and angiogenesis via enhancing chemotaxis, adhesion, spreading, osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). IL-8 mediated the in situ recruitment of BMSCs and macrophages via binding with C–X–C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2), while maintaining cellular viability without inducing macrophage polarization. Moreover, tDM improved BMSC adhesion and spreading via the recognition and binding of the affinitive ligand existing in tDM by the cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) on the BMSC cytomembrane. Furthermore, tDM promoted the osteogenic differentiation and mineralization of BMSCs, benefiting from the retained growth factors. In a rat femoral defect model, the IL-8/tDM/PLGA scaffold significantly accelerated new bone mineralization and maturation through synergistic regulations of cell recruitment, matrix adhesion, and osteogenic signaling pathways. After 8 weeks post-implantation of the IL-8/tDM/PLGA scaffolds, the bone volume fraction of the newly formed bone, trabecular number, and trabecular separation at the defect site were 47%, 1.21 mm−2, and 0.50 mm, respectively, which presented significantly better bone repair effects than those in other groups. These results demonstrated that the innovative bone regeneration strategy combining chemokine-driven recruitment and endogenous tDM regulation offered a potential solution for clinical repair of large-sized bone defects.

A colorimetric method for fish freshness monitoring was developed. After coating magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was adsorbed onto it with high efficiency due to the large surface area of ZIF-8, the mesoporous SiO 2 was further decorated onto the Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8@HRP to form Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8@HRP@SiO 2 nanostructure, in order to minimize the release of HRP, and enhance the stability and catalytic activity of HRP. The morphology, elemental composition, surface functional groups of Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8@HRP@SiO 2 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Hypoxanthine (HX), which formed due to the degradation of adenosine triphosphate in fish, can be oxidized by xanthine oxidase and generated H 2 O 2 intermediate. Thereafter, in the presence of H 2 O 2 , HRP within Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8@HRP@SiO 2 nanostructure would catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue product of TMBox, allowing an indirect colorimetric sensing of HX content. Under optimal conditions, HX was selectively and sensitively detected in the range of 0–100 μM, with a detection limit of 0.133 μM. Finally, the proposed method was applied to determine the HX content in grass carp continuously stored at 4 °C and 30 °C for 96 h.

DNA methylation has emerged as a pivotal molecular biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, existing detection strategies remain limited by complex workflows, poor efficiency in trace DNA capture, and the inability to resolve both absolute concentration and methylation ratio simultaneously. Herein, we engineer a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) biosensor functionalized with Au@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Au@ZIF-8) core-shell nanoparticle arrays. This architecture overcomes the diffusion-limited capture of conventional biosensors through a powerful hydrodynamic−plasmonic synergy. First, hydrodynamic stagnation flow efficiently preconcentrates trace DNA molecules onto the sensing interface. Subsequently, plasmon-enhanced dielectrophoresis provides an active trapping force, precisely localizing these molecules onto sensing hotspots. To enable multiparametric methylation profiling, a dual-recognition strategy was developed by integrating sequence-specific DNA hybridization with 5-methylcytosine (5mC) antibody binding. This approach allows for rapid (<15 min), amplification-free quantification of both methylated DNA concentration and methylation ratio in complex biological samples, with an ultralow detection limit of 6.9 × 102 copies/μL. Clinical validation using patient-derived samples demonstrates excellent diagnostic accuracy, achieving a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) of 0.941 through multilocus methylation analysis. This study establishes a robust, amplification- and label-free biosensing platform that integrates microfluidic manipulation with plasmonic nanoengineering, offering a powerful strategy for high-throughput, clinically translatable DNA methylation analysis in early cancer detection.

For enhancing the storability and quality of postharvest fresh products, an electrospun nanofiber membrane composed of polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), perilla essential oil (PEO) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) (ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL) was developed for active food packaging. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL electrospun fibers integration were continuous nanofibers with ZIF-8 nanoparticles affixed to their surface and 759.1 nm average diameter. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL nanofiber membranes had improved tensile strength of 14.35 MPa and anti-deformation capability of 9.33 MPa and reduced thermal stability compared with PEO/PLA/PCL. The adhesion of ZIF-8 nanoparticles maintained the nanofiber surface hydrophobicity and improved the water vapor barrier quality of 0.21 g mm/m 2 h. The ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL nanofiber membrane showed excellent antibacterial ability within 24 h test and biosafety confirmed by the zebrafish co-culture experiments. The storage test revealed that the ZIF-8@PEO/PLA/PCL membrane delayed the postharvest quality degradation of blueberry fruits to extend their shelf-life to 28 days by maintaining firmness, color, and nutritional quality. These results indicated that the nanofiber membrane has significant potential for fruit preservation as functional packaging material.

Magnetoelectrical textiles, as self-power device to generate energy from motions, are promising building blocks for wearable electronic fields, but these traditional strategies towards magnetoelectrical textiles still suffer from insufficient stability and reliability, and the large-scale fabrication of magnetoelectrical textiles still remains challenging. Herein, soft magnetic fiber and its knitted fabric based NdFeB@ZIF-8 composite particles were proposed, and their electro-magnetic response performances were comprehensively characterized. NdFeB@ZIF-8 composite particles were synthesized, and they exhibited excellent magnetic property with the remnant magnetization (Mr) and coercivity (Hc) at 80 emg/g and 8604 Oe, respectively, the Ms. of NdFeB@ZIF-8 particles was 113.5 emu/g. The magnetoelectrical fibers prepared by micro-controlled flow spinning technology exhibited a breaking elongation of 575%. Driven by an external magnetic field, the magnetoelectrical fibers could bend up to 43°, and moved easily in tiny tube and lift a weight of 20 g. Similarly, the magnetoelectrical fabrics can undergo various deformations. Moreover, the magnetoelectric power generation system delivered a continuous and stable output voltage, allowing the generation of a stable electrical signal of 15 mV under various external forces. The maximum output peak power density was 551.25 mW/m2 when the resistance of the external load was 1 Ω. The presence of a magnetic field endowed magnetic fabrics with a certain degree of electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. In sum, this study employed an efficient and environmentally friendly fabricating strategy for magnetoelectrical textiles with self-power ability, showing great potential for the wearable electronics application.

Efficient and sustainable synthesis of value-added compounds based on biobased materials is consistent with the principles of green chemistry. Biobased chemicals are primarily synthesized from glucose and related feedstocks via two main routes: enzymatic catalysis for one-step synthesis and whole-cell catalysis for multistep synthesis, with the latter being more cost-effective than the former. However, due to the diversity of intracellular conversion pathways, whole-cell synthesis often exhibits a low atom economy for specific reactions. For example, in the key step of quinoline synthesis involving the construction of a nitrogen-containing six-membered ring, the conversion rate in the fermentation broth is less than 15%. To address this issue, we have developed a biochemical fusion preparation process that combines whole-cell synthesis of 2-aminophenol with the chemical catalytic technology. This approach enables the one-pot construction of C–N, C–C, and C═C bonds in situ within the fermentation broth, using 2-aminophenol and biobased acrolein as substrates, thereby efficiently synthesizing the nitrogen-containing six-membered ring and obtaining the target product, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ). The metal–organic framework catalyst was rationally designed with a Zr metal center for C–N bond formation and sulfonic acid group for C–C and C═C bond formation, while the pore size was optimized for efficient transformation at low substrate concentrations. This precise engineering strategy culminated in the performance of HI-UiO-66-SO3H-3.3, which delivers an 80.7% yield of 8-HQ within 3 h in aqueous solution. The synthesis efficiency of biochemical fusion catalysis is 6.36 times higher than that of conventional biological catalysis, achieving 200 mg·L–1·h–1. The recycling of water and catalyst exhibits clear advantages in terms of green chemistry metrics. In summary, this study achieved the synthesis of biobased 8-HQ in the biochemical fusion catalytic system, which provided the theoretical and experimental support for in situ green derivatization of biobased platform compounds.

Continuous ZIF-8 membranes have showed great potential for gas separation. The prospect is subjected to two pivotal issues: shorten the time to construct the ZIF-8 selective layer and tightly bond ZIF-8 layer onto the substrate. In our previous work, Zn(II)-doped polydopamine (Zn-PDA) linkage layer was proposed and effectual to solve these problems. In this research, the mechanism likely to support the improvements is studied intensively. The dominant factor is that Zn(II) ions can be chelating and depositing sufficiently in the linkage layer. The strongly alkaline condition for dopamine polymerization is also beneficial to Zn(II) chelation and deposition, which has been confirmed by DFT simulation, together with characterization tests, e.g., XPS, FTIR, and Zn(OH) 2 precipitation for Zn(II)–O coordination. Phenolic hydroxyl groups are deprotonated in the strongly alkaline environment with high Mulliken charge (−0.515 & −0.524 e) and become strong chelation sites to Zn(II). Subsequently, Zn(II) clusters extensively filled in the PDA linkage layer are acting as the starting sites for ZIF-8 heterogeneous nucleation and growth. The correspondence between Zn(II) clusters probed by EDX and nascent ZIF-8 crystals visualized by FE-SEM can support this phenomenon clearly. On the whole, the abundant starting sites in Zn-PDA enhanced ZIF-8 growth, and ZIF-8 growth from the rooting-in Zn(II) clusters created an indented and hinged boundary for tightly bonding ZIF-8 layer onto the substrate.

Membrane distillation (MD), a promising thermal desalination technology, faces a critical challenge in its practical deployment: membrane wetting induced by low-surface-tension contaminants, which compromises separation efficacy and long-term operational stability. To address this challenge, we conceptualize and fabricate a photo-responsive composite nanofiber membrane endowed with an intrinsic self-cleaning capability to overcome this limitation. This MoO 3 @ZIF-8/PAES-CF 3 composite membrane is architected with a hierarchical roughness and engineered to exhibit dynamic, light-gated anti-wetting behavior. The strategic integration of hydrophobic and photoactive MoO 3 @ZIF-8 nanoparticles, within a fluorinated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (PAES-CF 3 ) matrix via electrospinning yields a robust, photoactive interfacial structure that concomitantly enhances surface hydrophobicity and mechanical integrity. In direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD), the optimized membrane demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a water flux of 21.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 while maintaining a salt rejection rate exceeding 99.9%. Crucially, the membrane shows excellent resistance to wetting induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) under light illumination, withstanding concentrations up to 0.15 mM. Moreover, under a feed solution containing 0.1 mM SDS, the membrane maintains stable operation for 24 h. This work presents a novel strategy for designing anti-wetting MD membranes, providing a foundation for the development of environmentally responsive and adaptive separation materials.

Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have shown efficient adsorption performance in organic dye removal . However, its relatively poor capacity and slow adsorption kinetics often limit its further application. Herein, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was cross-linked and encapsulated in ZIF-8 to prepare novel composite (ZIF-8@PEI-CC) by using cyanuric chloride (CC). It was found that the composite exhibited excellent adsorption performance for methyl orange (MO). Compared with ZIF-8 (183 mg g −1 ), the adsorption capacity (710 mg g −1 ) was significantly enhanced, and it was easier to separate than ZIF-8. Moreover, it shows a faster adsorption rate than ZIF-8. The adsorption kinetics of the ZIF-8@PEI-CC is more consistent with the pseudo-secondary kinetic model . Isotherm of the ZIF-8@PEI-CC is more in line with the Langmuir model. In addition, the ZIF-8@PEI-CC shows high adsorption capacity in a wide pH range (4-11). Therefore, the synthesized composite ZIF-8@PEI-CC has great potential as an effective adsorbent for removing MO.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly promising as a novel class of drug delivery carriers; however, there are few reports about their application in nanoparticle-based formulations for dermal administration. In this work, we developed a novel kind of nanoparticular system based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polydopamine (PDA) modification for improving the dermal delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The structures and properties of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized using a variety of analytical methods. Their ex vivo delivery performance in the skin was investigated using Franz cells, and the underlying mechanisms were studied via confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) experiments which were employed to probe the penetration pathway and the interaction between nanoparticles and the skin. The results revealed that both 5-FU@ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@5-FU@PDA had an enhancement effect on the deposition of 5-FU in the skin, and the surface coating of PDA could further reduce drug permeation across the skin, especially in the case of impaired skin, in comparison with the drug solution. The CLSM study using rhodamine 6G as the fluorescent probe to mimic 5-FU indicated that ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@PDA could deliver their payloads into the skin via two pathways, i.e., intercellular and follicular ones, and the follicular route was shown to be particularly important for ZIF-8@PDA, in which the drug and carrier were co-delivered into the skin as an intact particle. This study provides evidence for using ZIF-8 and PDA modification for skin-specific drug delivery and offers an effective avenue to develop novel nanoplatforms for dermal application to treat skin diseases.

ZIF-8 membranes are promising for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation due to its proper pore size between C 3 H 6 and C 3 H 8 . However, challenges from the defective grain-boundary (poor reproducibility), inferior pressure-resistant, and insufficient synthesis parameters regulation hinder its advancement. Herein, we demonstrate an interface engineering method that can simultaneously deal with these two issues by coating a polymeric layer on the surface of ZIF-8 membrane which can seal the grain boundaries and lock the pressure-induced linker rotation. Accordingly, by optimizing the polymer chain rigidity and the corresponding thickness layer, the resultant membrane with locked rigid interface demonstrates desired C 3 H 6 permeance and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor above 45 GPU and 105, respectively, and stabilized performance up to 7 bar. Such performance is superior to most of the recently reported work in the literature. This strategy provides inspiration for considering the polymer chain rigidity regulation in the membrane coating layer and its effect on developing advanced composite membranes for energy-efficient separations.

Tetracycline (TC) residues have been noted as an important class of emerging contaminants in the environment, thus fast, straightforward, highly sensitive detection method is becoming an issue that must be addressed. Herein, a novel CDs@ZIF-8 sensing material was fabricated by encapsulating luminescent carbon dots (CDs) into the metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) to achieve highly luminescent porous composites. Furthermore, to avoid the secondary contamination caused by powders, a shapable CDs@ZIF-8/CS film sensor as a portable disposable test strip with dual-function of TC detection and adsorption was designed by crosslinking CDs@ZIF-8 with chitosan (CS). The as-prepared CDs@ZIF-8/CS hybrid film exhibited the high sensitivity and selectivity for TC fluorescence detection and rapid decontaminate capability, as well as high optical transmittance and robust mechanical property, which were essential for the practical sensing application. This paper-based dual-functional luminescent sensor exhibits promising practicability for TC detection and contaminant removal in pharmaceutical analysis, food safety and water treatment.
