Engineering highly active Ag/Nb2O5@Nb2CTx (MXene) photocatalysts via steering charge kinetics strategy

Chao Peng,Xi Xie,Wenkang Xu,Tao Zhou,Ping Wei,Jianbo Jia,Kun Zhang,Yonghai Cao,Hongjuan Wang,Feng Peng,Rui Yang,Xiqiang Yan,Hui Pan,Hao Yu

Steering charge kinetics is one of the most urgent unsolved issues in photocatalysis. The effective spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is particularly important in the design and controllable preparation of nano-photocatalysts. Herein, one-dimensional Nb 2 O 5 nanorod arrays with [0   0   1] orientation were grown in-situ on two-dimensional Nb 2 CT x MXenes through a facile hydrothermal method for the first time. Ag nanoparticles were then photodeposited on the Nb 2 O 5 nanorods to form hierarchical 0D/1D/2D nanohybrids. It was experimentally demonstrated that OH is predominantly adsorbed on Nb 2 CT x as termination groups, which resulted in a low work function (2.7 eV). Thanks to the unique structure, the highly active [0   0   1] Nb 2 O 5 nanorods afford high-efficiency photogeneration of electron-hole pairs, while the low-work-function OH terminated Nb 2 CT x allows for trapping holes, and Ag nanoparticles act as electron reservoir and sites of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ternary Ag/Nb 2 O 5 @Nb 2 CT x nanohybrids reached a record HER activity (682.2 and 824.2 μmol·g -1 h −1 use methanol and glycerol as sacrificial agents, respectively) among the niobium-based photocatalysts, demonstrating the potential of MXenes as a platform for the synthesis of high-performance heterojunction structures, where the tunable electronic property is a key factor.

Determination of NADH by Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Using Au@MB@Ag NPs

Yuqin Liao,Ruiyun You,Min Fan,Shangyuan Feng,Dechan Lu,Yudong Lu,Yuqin Liao,Ruiyun You,Min Fan,Shangyuan Feng,Dechan Lu,Yudong Lu

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) is an important coenzyme involved in various metabolic processes of living cells. As an important biomarker, NADH is associated with breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. In this paper, silver plated gold core–shell nanoparticles containing Raman signal molecules were synthesised on the basis of bare gold. Using the Raman peak corresponding to the 4-mercaptobenzonitrile (MB) silent region C≡N vibration for quantification, while avoiding competition with the precious metal surface binding site to be measured, it can also be free from the interference of endogenous biomolecules. On the one hand, it can correct the working curve, on the other hand, it can avoid competing with the binding site. Compared with the core–shell structure prepared here, the limit of detection (LOD) for NADH was only 10−5 M for bare gold and the LOD for the core–shell structure prepared on the basis of bare gold was 3.3 × 10−7 M. In terms of correction, with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a Raman signalling molecule, the R2 value before SERS detection and correction is only 0.9405, and the R2 value after correction increases to 0.9853. The unique fingerprint peak of SERS was used to realise the quantitative detection of NADH, which realizes the detection of NADH in complex biological samples of serum and provides the possibility for expanding the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Photodegradation of acenaphthylene over plasmonic Ag/Ag3PO4 nanopolyhedrons synthesized via in-situ reduction

Yuxuan Dai,Yuting Wang,Gancheng Zuo,Jijie Kong,Yang Guo,Cheng Sun,Qiming Xian

We report a simple strategy to synthesize the Ag 3 PO 4 nanopolyhedrons with regular morphology and uniform size under mild conditions. The photocatalytic properties of the composite were optimized by adjusting the content of Ag nanoparticles. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized and the photocatalytic performances were evaluated by the degradation of acenaphthylene (ANY) under visible-light illumination. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of appropriate Ag nanoparticles was generated on surface under visible light irradiation, which enhanced the absorption and utilization of visible light. At the same time, the conductivity of Ag promoted the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers, provided active sites for the reaction, and enhanced the photocatalytic degradation efficiency through the generation of active species. As a result, the optimized composite exhibited enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity of 0.03512 min −1 and higher removal rate of 97.3% for ANY (4 times and 1.8 times higher than that of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 , respectively), more photogenerated active species (h + and •O 2 – ) and relatively high stability (4 times of cycle experiments). In addition, the possible degradation pathway of ANY was proposed. The work of this paper has a crucial guiding significance for the working principle and design direction of silver semiconductor composite photocatalysts with surface plasmon effect.

Synthesis and properties of high thermal conductivity Ag shell-coated phase change materials

Huanmei Yuan,Hao Bai,Hao Chen,Zefei Zhang,Haifei An,Weijian Tian

Phase change micro/nanocapsules with high thermal conductivity shells have extensive application prospects in solar energy storage systems and electronics cooling. To improve the heat transfer of the capsules, a method of preparing Ag-shell coated phase change micro/nanocapsules was developed, where the AgBr ultrafine solid particles are introduced to enhance the rigidity of emulsion droplets in the liquid-solid phase transition process, and by employing hydroquinone as the reductant to repeatedly reduce the AgBr that had been adhered to the surface of the emulsion droplets, an Ag shell is formed on the surface of the cores. In this work, palmitic acid (PA) is used as the core material, and the prepared PA/Ag nanocapsules (100–600 nm) exhibit high thermal storage capability and good thermal reliability. The bulk thermal conductivity of the nanocapsules can be as high as 4.072 W/(m·K), indicating that the Ag shell can effectively improve the thermal conductivity of the nanocapsules. Besides, the thermal response of the nanocapsules is estimated by simulating a single-particle heat transfer process considering nanoscale effects , and the results demonstrate that the thermal response time of PA/Ag nanocapsule (350 nm) in working fluid (water, 80 °C) could be as short as 150ns.

Ag@MIL-101(Cr) Film Substrate with High SERS Enhancement Effect and Uniformity

Qinchao Shao,De Zhang,Cai-e Wang,Zhexiang Tang,Mingqiang Zou,Xiaobing Yang,Huaping Gong,Zhi Yu,Shangzhong Jin,Pei Liang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), owing to its high sensitivity and rapid response, has been widely used in various fields. However, it is still a challenge to prepare SERS substrates with high stability and reproducibility. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with excellent enrichment capacity and stability, provide a new material for high-performance SERS substrates. In this paper, we prepare a MIL-101(Cr) film via a secondary growth method, and Ag+ is reduced to Ag NPs by UV irradiation and attach to the film to synthesize the Ag@MIL-101(Cr) film SERS substrate. Then, we change the time of UV light illumination and the amount of silver nitrate in order to obtain the optimal substrate. The detection capability of this sample can be up to 10–11 M for 4-ATP, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is only about 5%, which demonstrates that the substrate has excellent SERS effect and reproducibility. Finally, the prepared substrate has been applied for the determination of nitrofurantoin, with its detection capability up to 10–7 M. This work proposes a simple method to synthesize MOF-based film substrate with high SERS performance and uniformity and provides potential for the sensitive detection of chemical or antibiotic residue.

Cs2AgInCl6 double perovskite quantum dots decorated with Ag nanoparticles for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Tangxi Chen,Min Zhou,Wen Chen,Yuyao Zhang,Siyong Ou,Yueli Liu

Halide perovskite quantum dots (HP QDs) have been widely used in the field of photocatalysis due to their excellent performance. However, the issues of lead toxicity and instability prevent their process in the photocatalysis application. Herein, the lead-free Cs2AgInCl6 perovskite quantum dots (CAIC QDs) are synthesized by the hot-injection method, and CAIC QDs@Ag composites with various Ag loading amounts are self-assembled by adjusting the Cl source in the synthesis process, which is used to improve the CO2 photoreduction efficiency by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles. In addition, the surface ligand density of CAIC QDs@Ag composites is regulated by the purification processing treatment to release the influence of organic ligands on the charge transport performance. It is found that the CAIC QDs@Ag composite with the optimal ligands density possesses fast electron transport and effective carrier separation efficiency, which are crucial for the improvement of the photocatalysis reaction. As a result, the CAIC QDs@Ag-2 composite after purification processing achieves the highest yield of 26.4 μmol g−1 and 28.9 μmol g−1 for CO and CH4, respectively, during the CO2 photoreduction process. In addition, there is no significant decline of CO2 photoreduction performance after the photocatalysis cycling test for 9 h, indicating the good stability of the CAIC QDs@Ag composite in the photocatalysis process.

Ti3C2 MXene-bridged Ag/Ag3PO4 hybrids toward enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity

Bin Sun,Furong Tao,Zixuan Huang,Wei Yan,Yuxin Zhang,Xusheng Dong,Yue Wu,Guowei Zhou

As a novel transition metal carbides and/or carbonitrides, MXene possess two-dimensional characteristic, abundant surface hydrophilic functional groups, and excellent electrical conductivity that bestow a possibility to building MXene-based photocatalysts. Inspired by this, an emerging Ti 3 C 2 MXene cocatalyst bridged Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 to induce a highly visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity, synthesized by electrostatic self-assembly method and the partial reduction of Ag + ions to Ag 0 in MXene solution is reported. The resultant hybrids reveal a well-defined hybrid structures with Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 anchoring on the layer structured Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. Benefiting from the unique structural features, the Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /Ti 3 C 2 hybrids present Ti 3 C 2 content-dependent photocatalytic activity toward the methyl orange (MO) degradation and Cr(VI) reduction under visible-light irradiation. Remarkably, the Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /Ti 3 C 2 hybrid with 3 wt% Ti 3 C 2 content achieves the greatest MO degradation efficiency and Cr(VI) reduction efficiency after irradiation for 1 h, which are increased to 1.72 and 1.46 times higher than that obtained on pristine Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles, respectively. Such impressive photocatalytic activity is related to the synergeric effects derived from Ag, Ag 3 PO 4 , and Ti 3 C 2 , which greatly enhance visible light absorption, promote separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. This work highlights that the MXene-based photocatalysts would be desirable candidates for environmental purification of organic pollutants and heavy metal ions.

Surface Evolution of Cu–Ag Bimetallic Systems: From Experiments to Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Mengfan Liang,Ziyi Xiong,Yongmao Hu,Yingli Liu,Tao Shen,Shuhong Sun,Yan Zhu

In this article, we prepare corncob-like Cu–Ag and core–shell Cu@Ag bimetallic structures by controlling the concentration of Ag and Cu salts via a galvanic replacement reaction. Moreover, the structure evolution and electrical resistivity of the Cu–Ag corncob nanoparticle deposits were investigated upon heating up to 260 °C by experiments. Afterward, the effect of the distinctiveness and arrangement (such as core@shell, bifacial Janus, and nanowire structure) on the sintering behavior of Cu–Ag systems was investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The results revealed that both the Ag–Cu ratio and the special structure in the initial stage as well as the sintering temperature play important roles in the morphological formation. Despite limited experimental observation of the structure evolution during sintering, the MD simulation provides a powerful tool to monitor the atom trajectory. The combined information from our experiment and molecular dynamics (MD) results will give guidelines for choosing the preferred structure of Cu–Ag systems when aiming at certain sintering properties.

Construction of 1D Ag-AgBr/AlOOH Plasmonic Photocatalyst for Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Zhang Siyang,Khan Iltaf,Qin Xiaohong,Qi Kezhen,Liu Ying,Bai Shuchong

In this work, the highly efficient and low-cost Ag-AgBr/AlOOH plasmonic photocatalyst is successfully prepared via a simple and mild wet-chemical process and used for degrading high concentration methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The optimized 6-Ag-AgBr/AlOOH sample showed a 79% decomposition of TCH in 2 h, which is almost two times higher than that of bare AgBr (37%). For degrading MB, the photocatalytic activity of 6-Ag-AgBr/AlOOH (decomposing 84% in 2 h) showed a large enhancement as compared to bare AgBr (only 57%). The TEM, HRTEM, XRD, DRS, and XPS characterization results confirm that Ag-AgBr is a composite catalyst formed by loading Ag nanoparticles onto AgBr surfaces and then loaded on to AlOOH. The possible mechanism proposed is that •O2- and •OH radicals produced under sun light are the main active species for degrading MB and TCH. It is hoped that this work will open a new gateway to the synthesis of highly efficient and low-cost Ag-AgBr/AlOOH plasmonic photocatalysts for degrading organic pollutants.

Three-dimensional Pd–Ag–S porous nanosponges for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia

Hongjing Wang,Songliang Liu,Hugang Zhang,Shuli Yin,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Ziqiang Wang,Liang Wang

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides a facile and sustainable route to synthesize ammonia. The preparation of efficient and high-performance catalysts is one of the most important issues in large-scale applications of the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. Herein, we have devised a simple method to fabricate three-dimensional palladium-silver-sulphur porous nanosponges (Pd–Ag–S PNSs) under room temperature. The porous network can provide more active sites and accessible channels for the reaction species. The incorporation of sulfur reduces the energy barrier of NRR and promotes the nitrogen hydrogenation to ammonia. Intrinsically, the Pd–Ag–S PNSs demonstrates a superior NRR performance with an NH3 yield of 9.73 μg h−1 mg−1cat. and a faradaic efficiency of 18.41% at −0.2 V, superior to those of the undoped Pd–Ag PNSs. The design of the three-dimensional metallic nanosponges with the doping of nonmetallic elements is a highly valuable strategy for NRR and other electrocatalytic reactions.

Tetrahedral Geometry Induction of Stable Ag–Ti Nanoclusters by Flexible Trifurcate TiL3 Metalloligand

Mei-Yan Gao,Kai Wang,Yayong Sun,Dejing Li,Bai-Qiao Song,Yassin H. Andaloussi,Michael J. Zaworotko,Jian Zhang,Lei Zhang

A series of increasingly large silver nanoclusters with a varied combination of Archimedean and/or Platonic solid arrangements was constructed using a flexible trifurcate TiL3 (L = Salicylic acid or 5-fluorosalicylic acid) metalloligand: Ag4@Ag4@Ti4 (PTC-85), Ag12@Ti4 (PTC-86), Ag4@Ag6@Ag12@Ti4 (PTC-87), Ag6@Ag24@Ag12@Ti4 (PTC-88), and Ag12@Ag24@Ti4 (PTC-89). The silver nanoclusters are each capped by four TiL3 moieties, thereby forming {Ti4} supertetrahedra with average edge lengths ranging from ∼8.12 Å to ∼17.37 Å. Such {Ti4} moieties further induce the tetrahedral geometry of the encapsulated silver nanoclusters. These atomically precise metallic clusters were found to be ultrastable with respect to air for several months, and to water for more than 3 days, due to the stabilizing effects of the TiL3 metalloligand. Moreover, the obtained clusters exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) effects in optical limiting tests and also temperature-dependent photoluminescent properties. This work provides an interesting metalloligand method not only to induce the spatial growth of metallic clusters to achieve highly symmetric structures, but also to enhance their stability which is crucial for future application.

Synergistic enhancement effect of MoO3@Ag hybrid nanostructures for boosting selective detection sensitivity

Tengda Shi,Pei Liang,Xiubing Zhang,De Zhang,Haibo Shu,Jie Huang,Zhi Yu,YongQuan Xu

An ex situ method was used to synthesize noble metals and metal oxide composite materials, due to the selective adsorption properties of metal oxides, the adsorption of different probe molecules by this composite structure had been studied. In the ex situ approach, we use (3-aminopropyl) diethoxy methylsilane (ATES) as a coupling agent which is easy for noble metal nanoparticles deposited on metallic oxide nanomaterials . The Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of 1D MoO 3 nanowires (MoO 3 -NWs) @Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) hybrid surface had been fabricated. Several parameters are presented in the following which influences the morphology of self-assembly and SERS activity: (i) coupling agent of ATES, (ii) ATES content (iii) Ag-NPs content. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is to explain the enhancement mechanism distribution of the hybrid substrate. Different probe molecules (R6G, Methylene Blue , Crystal Violet , and 4-ATP) have been adsorbed for SERS tests. Improved principle component analysis (PCA) is adopted to obtain the minimum detection limit of probe molecules. Through the DFT calculation, different absorption strengths between the target molecules and the MoO 3 (010) surface have been illustrated, which is also the main reason for the selective enhancement effect of MoO 3 @Ag hybrid nanostructures. This paper might propose a method to prepare such enhancement substrate based on the selective absorption properties of oxide semiconductors.
