Nanoparticles (NPs) have proven to be effective drug carriers in diagnosis and therapy of cancer. But, they faced a contradictory issue that NPs with large size appear weak tumor penetration, meanwhile small size resulted in poor tumor retention. Herein, we fabricated doxorubicin conjugated carbon dots (CDs-DOX) and indocyanine green (ICG)-loaded liposomes (ICG-LPs) named CDs-ICG-LPs using a modified reverse phase evaporation process, and with high incorporation in the aqueous core. The CDs-ICG-LPs exhibited good monodispersity, excellent fluorescence/size stability, and consistent spectra characteristics compared with free ICG or DOX. Moreover, the CDs-ICG-LPs showed higher temperature response, faster DOX release under laser irradiation. In the meantime, the fluorescence of DOX and ICG in CDs-ICG-LPs was also visualized for the process of subcellular location in vitro. In comparison with chemo or photothermal treatment alone, the combined treatment of CDs-ICG-LPs with laser irradiation synergistically induced the apoptosis and death of DOX-sensitive HepG2 cells. In vivo antitumor activities demonstrated CDs-ICG-LPs could reach higher antitumor activity compared with CDs-DOX and ICG-LPs for H22 tumor cells, and suppressed H22 tumor growth in vivo. Notably, no systemic toxicity occurrence was observed after repeated dose of CDs-ICG-LPs with laser irradiation. Hence, the well-defined CDs-ICG-LPs exhibited great potential in targeting cancer imaging and chemo-photothermal therapy.

A sensitive and selective photoelectrochemical (PEC) method is described for the detection of protein kinase A (PKA) activity based on the use of graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and the CdS quantum dots (QDs). Firstly, a complex was synthesized from g-C 3 N 4 and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). It was employed as both the PEC-active material and as a support for immobilization of peptides. The latter were assembled on an ITO electrode modified with g-C 3 N 4 -AuNPs and subsequently phosphorylated by PKA in the presence of adenosine 5′-[γ-thio]triphosphate (ATP-S). Finally, CdS quantum dots (QDs) were introduced on the ITO in order to increase the PEC response of g-C 3 N 4 based on the Cd-S binding between the QDs and thiol groups. Under the optimal conditions and a typical working voltage of −0.3 V, the method has a dynamic range that extends from 0.05 to 50 unit·mL −1 , with a 0.017 unit·mL −1 lower detection limit. The method was successfully applied to the quantification of the inhibitory effect of ellagic acid on the activity of PKA, and to monitor enzyme activity in cell lysates.
Schematic of a sensitive and selective photoelectrochemical biosensor for the detection of protein kinase A activity. It is based on the use of graphite-like carbon nitride and CdS quantum dots.

Two different colors of water-soluble core-shell quantum dots CdTe/CdS (green and orange red) have been synthesized and characterized in this paper. The formation of core-shell quantum dots not only improves the fluorescence quantum yield , but also reduces the biological toxicity of quantum dots, and improves the fluorescence lifetime . Two novel fluorescent bioprobes, CdTe/CdS (λ em = 545 nm)-5-Fu and Bio-CdTe/CdS (λ em = 600 nm)-TAM, have been synthesized via the interaction of these two core-shell quantum dots with anticancer drugs (5-Fu) and P-gp inhibitors (TAM), respectively. These two fluorescent probes have been simultaneously used in fluorescence imaging of human breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231/MDR. It can be observed that under the action of P-gp inhibitors distributed on the cell membrane, anticancer drugs can be retained in cancer cells. According to the color of quantum dots on the probe, the visualization results of the action of anticancer drugs and P-gp inhibitors can be obtained. This study shows that to prepare functional bioprobes using core-shell quantum dots CdTe/CdS has great potential in the field of biomedical research such as anticancer drugs.

This paper reports dual enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of CdS quantum dot (QD)-decorated aminated Au@SiO2 core/shell (Au@SiO2-NH2/CdS) superstructures. A maximum ECL emission of the Au@SiO2-NH2/CdS superstructures (Au core, ca. 55 nm) with a silica shell of 38 nm was 35-fold stronger than that of the counterparts (containing neither Au cores nor amino groups) with H2O2 as a coreactant. The fold of ECL enhancement is the largest, and the optical path of maximum ECL enhancement is the longest reported so far. The larger the Au cores in the superstructures, the stronger the ECL emission of CdS QDs was. Two types of ECL enhancement mechanisms were clearly proposed for the dual enhanced ECL of the Au@SiO2-NH2/CdS superstructures. One was the electromagnetic field enhancement induced by localized surface plasmon resonance of Au cores, and the other was the chemical enhancement from amino groups modified on the silica surface involved in the ECL process in the assistance of H2O2. It is the first time to put forward the new concept of chemical enhanced ECL that was directly related to the participation of other chemicals, which caused a decrease in the difference in the redox potential between emitters and coreactants for the increase of their redox currents. The constructed ECL platform was demonstrated to have promising applications in highly sensitive detection of glutathione (GSH), and the response mechanism of GSH was also explored.

The controlled visible-light mediated conversion of nitroaromatics to versatile nitrogen-containing intermediates is of great significance but still remains a challenge. Herein, we report for the first time a facile visible-light-initiated one-pot strategy for clean and efficient synthesis of nitrone from nitrobenzene and benzyl alcohol. It integrates the controlled photocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to phenylhydroxylamine by photogenerated electrons with the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde by photoinduced holes over a low-cost CdS photocatalyst with a suitable reduction capability, followed by spontaneous condensation of the as-formed hydroxylamine and aldehyde at ambient pressure and room temperature. Furthermore, by modulating cocatalyst and illumination time, for the conversion of the same reactants, the other two useful nitrogen-containing compounds, imine and secondary amine, were also successfully synthesized. The reaction mechanisms for flexible synthesis of the three target products are proposed.

Aims: The aim was to improve the absorption and bioavailability of [6]-shogaol with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) prior to in vitro and in vivo evaluation. Methods: [6]-Shogaol/β-CDs inclusion complexes (6-S-β-CDs) were developed using saturated aqueous solution method and characterised with appropriate techniques. The absorption and bioavailability potential of [6]-shogaol was evaluated via in vivo pharmacokinetics and in situ intestinal perfusion. Results: The results of characterisation showed that 6-S-β-CDs (drug loading, 7.15%) were successfully formulated. In vitro release study indicated significantly improved [6]-shogaol release. Pharmacokinetic parameters such as Cmax, AUC0–36 h, and oral relative bioavailability (about 685.36%) were substantially enhanced. The in situ intestinal perfusion study revealed that [6]-shogaol was markedly absorbed via passive diffusion in the intestinal segments, and duodenum followed by ileum and jejunum. Conclusions: Cyclodextrin inclusion technology could enhance the intestinal absorption and oral bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs like [6]-shogaol.

A novel photoelectrode of ternary CdS/Au/TiO2 nanotube array, fabricated by electrodeposition technique and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, shows strong photon absorption capacity and active charge transfer efficiency. A photoelectrochemical
aptasensor was developed to detect cytochrome c (cyt c) by decorating a HS-aptamer on the CdS/Au/TiO2 photoelectrode. Due to the specific binding between the cyt c and aptamer, the cyt c-aptamer complex formed and enhanced the steric hindrances and reduced the e/h
+
lifetimes, which result in a decrease in the photoelectrical current intensity. Cyt c is, therefore, also quantified based on the decrease in photoelectrical current. The developed aptasensor shows a high specificity and a high sensitivity towards to the cyt c, giving a linear range from 5
pM to 100 nM, and a limit of detection of 3.45 pM.

In this work, a new assembled copper ions sensor based on the Mn metal-enhanced fluorescence of N -acetyl- l -cysteine protected CdS quantum dots (NAC-Mn:CdS QDs) was developed. The NAC and Mn:CdS QDs nanoparticles were assembled into NAC-Mn:CdS QDs complexes through the formation of Cd S and Mn S bonds. As compared to NAC capped CdS QDs, higher fluorescence quantum yields of NAC-Mn:CdS QDs was observed, which is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance of Mn metal. In addition, the fluorescence intensity of as-formed complexes weakened in the presence of copper ions. The decrease in fluorescence intensity presented a linear relationship with copper ions concentration in the range from 0.16–3.36 μM with a detection limit of 0.041 μM . The characterization of as-formed QDs was analyzed by photoluminescence (PL), ultra violet-visible (UV–vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) respectively. Furthermore, the recoveries and relative standard deviations of Cu 2+ spiked in real water samples for the intra-day and inter-day analyses were 88.20–117.90, 95.20–109.90, 0.80–5.80 and 1.20–3.20%, respectively. Such a metal-enhanced QDs fluorescence system may have promising application in chemical and biological sensors.

In this work, the effect of core size on the fluorescence emission properties of CdTe@CdS core@shell quantum dots was investigated under the condition of different shell thickness and pH values. Both CdTe and CdTe@CdS core@shell QDs were synthesized in aqueous phase by a simple method, whose optical features were characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectra . High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were utilized to study the structure and composition of the as-prepared QDs. We can conclude that a smaller initial core exhibits a greater potential for optimizing both fluorescence intensity enhancement and red shift. What's more, there is an optimal shell thickness for the strongest fluorescence intensity while a thicker shell contributes to a larger fluorescence red shift. The optimal pH value is 10.5 for the fluorescence intensity enhancement of the core@shell QDs and a higher pH value is an advantage to expedite the growth rate of CdS shell.

Semiconductor-based materials as SERS-active substrates have gained significant attention because of their superior properties. However, to date, only few studies have been reported on the SERS performance of substrates fabricated using CdS-based composites. In this study, hollow sphere-like Ag/CdS nanocomposites (NCs) with multi-hot spots were successfully synthesized via a room-temperature solution route without the addition of surfactant. Especially, note that in our strategy, the cadmium ions in an aqueous solution originating from the self-template core dissolved with acid were retrieved and recycled via a simple approach, avoiding the wastage of resources and environmental problems. Moreover, a strong electromagnetic enhancement between two neighboring Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on the CdS sphere-like surface could be achieved by conveniently adjusting the amount of the AgNO3 reagent. Note that the as-prepared substrate with low loading of Ag presented superior SERS performance with the ultralow limit of detection of 10−12 mol L−1 for R6G and CV, much higher than that of many recently reported composite substrates. These significantly enhanced SERS effects are attributed to the combination of several contributions, including plasmonic coupling between Ag NPs, synergistic charge-transfer resonances in the Ag/CdS/dye molecule system, and cadmium defect-induced electrostatic forces. As a consequence, the present study not only develops a convenient, environmentally friendly approach for the fabrication of noble/CdS composites but also indicates the promising potential application of these composites as ideal SERS substrates in the detection of organic pollutants.

The application of photo-Fenton process is restricted by the acidic pH and additional hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In order to overcome these drawbacks, a photo-Fenton system of CdS/rGO/Fe 2+ which can perform at natural pH with in situ -generated H 2 O 2 has been successfully developed. Highly efficient photo-Fenton degradation of phenol was achieved under the visible light irradiation via the CdS/rGO/Fe 2+ system. Experimental results showed that phenol could be degraded completely in 1 h at natural pH. The plentiful in situ generation of H 2 O 2 was further proved to act as an important role in phenol degradation with the addition of Fe 2+ . The advantages of degradation at natural pH with in situ -generated H 2 O 2 can provide a new prospective to the environmental-friendly Fenton process.

The photocatalytic performances of the SnS 2 and the CdS under the irradiation of visible light were investigated by using different organic dyes as reactants. The photodegradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond on the SnS 2 followed a reduction mechanism with photoelectrons via the Sn IV /Sn II transition while the photodegradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond on the CdS and the photodegradation of organic dyes without N N double bond on either the SnS 2 or the CdS followed an oxidation mechanism with O 2 − and OH radicals. The SnS 2 exhibited much higher activity than the CdS during the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond, since the reduction of reactant molecules on the SnS 2 surface was much faster than the migration of either the O 2 − or the OH radicals. However, the SnS 2 displayed even lower activity than the CdS in the photocatalytic degradation of other organic dyes without N N double bond, since all these reactions followed the oxidation mechanism and the SnS 2 displayed a lower efficiency than the CdS in producing O 2 − or OH radicals due to the presence of the Sn IV /Sn II transition.
