Due to their excellent high Faraday efficiency, perovskite solid oxide cells (SOECs) have attracted considerable attention. Nevertheless, they still face significant challenges in terms of stability and electrocatalytic activity during CO₂ electrolysis. In this study, Ni particles in La 0.65 Ba 0.35 Mn 1-x Ni x O 3-δ are successfully separated by a unique in-situ exsolved method of metal nanoparticles, which are uniformly anchored to the electrode surface as Ni nanometal particles. This effectively suppresses the generation of carbon deposits on the cathode surface. Under test conditions of 850 °C, 1.6 V and 50 sccm flow rate, the CO yield of the modified cathode material reached 5.9 mL min −1 cm −2 , which is nearly four times higher than that before doping. The synergistic effect of in-situ exsolution of Ni metal nanoparticles with oxygen defects generated by the perovskite, creating more active locations for CO 2 adsorption and electrolysis, is responsible for the significant improvement in electrochemical performance. This work provides new strategies and ideas for the development of efficient and durable SOEC cathode materials.

Industrial waste solutions are rich in precious metals, which are valuable secondary resources. In order to realize the separation and recovery of ruthenium by electrodeposition, this work used a combination of cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (I-t), and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) to study the electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition mechanism of ruthenium in HCl solution. The results show that the reduction of ruthenium in HCl solution is influenced by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and chlorine evolution reaction, and the reduction process of ruthenium varies at different potentials. The reduction currents of Ru(VIII)/Ru(0) and Ru(IV)/Ru(III) are observed at 0.88 V and 0.6 V. The reduction of Ru(III) to Ru(0) at negative potentials starts at −0.2 V, with peak cathodic currents between −0.2 V and −0.5 V accompanied by a significant mass increase, which is confirmed to be the electrodeposition of metallic ruthenium by SEM and EDS. The microscopic morphology of the ruthenium coating is spherical particles, and the nucleation mode of electrodeposition is progressive nucleation. The HER leads to a macroscopic morphology of a cleaved lamellar structure, which is not tightly adhered to the substrate. The metallic ruthenium starts to oxidize and dissolve rapidly after 1.12 V, leading to a rapid degradation of the electrode surface quality.

Chlorzoxazone (CZX), a benzoxazolone derivative, has been approved for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders to relieve localized muscle spasm. However, its idiosyncratic toxicity reported in patients brought attention, particularly for hepatotoxicity. The present study for the first time aimed at the relationship between CZX-induced hepatotoxicity and identification of oxirane intermediate resulting from metabolic activation of CZX. Two N -acetylcysteine (NAC) conjugates (namely M1 and M2) and two glutathione (GSH) conjugates (namely M3 and M4) were detected in rat & human microsomal incubations with CZX (200 μM) fortified with NAC or GSH, respectively. The formation of M1-M4 was NADPH-dependent and these metabolites were also observed in urine or bile of SD rats given CZX intragastrically at 10 mg/kg or 25 mg/kg. NAC was found to attach at C-6’ of the benzo group of M1 by sufficient NMR data. CYPs3A4 and 3A5 dominated the metabolic activation of CZX. The two GSH conjugates were also observed in cultured rat primary hepatocytes after exposure to CZX. Inhibition of CYP3A attenuated the susceptibility of hepatocytes to the cytotoxicity of CZX (10–400 μM). The in vitro and in vivo studies provided solid evidence for the formation of oxirane intermediate of CZX. This would facilitate the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of toxic action of CZX.

Hyperuricemia arises from imbalanced uric acid metabolism, contributing to gout and related chronic diseases. When traditional drugs are used to treat hyperuricemia, side effects are inevitable, which promotes the exploration of new bioactive compounds. Protein hydrolysates and peptides are gradually showing potential in the treatment of hyperuricemia. This study investigated the uric acid inhibitory activity of peptides extracted fromTrachurus japonicususing in silico and in vitro methods. We employed in silico virtual enzymolysis and experimental validation to identify bioactive peptides fromTrachurus japonicusproteins. Four peptides (DF, AGF, QPSF, and AGDDAPR) were comprehensively screened by molecular docking and database analysis. After solid-phase synthesis, the inhibitory effects of these peptides on hyperuricemia were further verified in vitro and at the cellular level. The results showed that all four peptides have good hyperuricemia-inhibiting activities. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics revealed that peptides DF and AGDDAPR affect the production of uric acid by binding to the active sites of urate transporter 1 (URAT1), glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9), and xanthine oxidase (XOD), while peptides QPSF and AGF mainly influence the XOD active site, confirming that it is feasible to rapidly screen hyperuricemia-inhibiting peptides by molecular docking.

Local pH near the catalyst surface exerts a substantial influence on both catalytic selectivity and activity in electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). While the investigation of local pH remains challenging in the aspect of in-situ imaging and monitoring. In this study, a novel lateral-type surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (L-SERS) system with a wide pH testing range from acidic to alkaline, is developed for the in-situ observation of local pH distributions with high spatial and temporal resolution during CO 2 RR. Excellent in-situ imaging of local pH near the catalyst surface is obtained, showing good consistency with simulation results. Besides, the gradual pH elevation and stabilization can be monitored via this time-resolved local pH investigation. This study presents a direct visualization of local pH distribution and variation at the Nernst layer during CO 2 RR, providing direct evidence in local pH for the feasibility of acidic electrolyte and offering theoretical guidance for optimizing CO 2 RR conditions.

Graphene oxide (GO) membrane has been considered as a promising approach for harvesting pure water from various wastewater to deal with the current water shortage issue, arising from its distinctive 2D channel features. However, the narrow interlayer distance (0.75 Å) of GO nanosheets hampers the utilization of GO membranes for dye wastewater treatment, which demands superior water permeance, high dyes rejection, and low salts rejection. Herein, an in-situ anchored nanoparticle strategy is designed to fabricate Fe(OH) 3 @GO membrane to enlarge the interlayer distance via the uniform distributed Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles. Benefiting from the in-situ transformation of Fe 3+ into positively charged Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles, the interlayer distance of GO membranes can be tailored via changing the Fe: GO mass ratio and hydrolysis time. The optimized Fe(OH) 3 @GO membrane realizes a superior water permeance of ∼90.9 LMH/bar (∼19-fold enhancement compared with GO membranes), with >99% and <4% rejection to Evans blue (EB) and NaCl, respectively. Thus, the membrane can be applied for dye desalination and can be stably running for 85 h. Considering the facile and efficient 2D channel tunability, our strategy provides an innovative approach for construction of high-performance 2D membranes.

Utilizing nanotechnology for pesticide delivery can enhance their uptake and distribution in plants, thereby boosting pesticide efficiency. Fluazinam, a highly effective broad-spectrum fungicide with unique mode of action, is hindered by its poor systemic conductivity, limiting its field control efficacy. In this study, fluazinam-loaded nanocapsules were developed, which exhibited significantly higher inhibitory activity against various Phytophthora species compared to the commercial suspension concentrate. Notably, the nanocapsules demonstrated pronounced effects on reducing ATP content in Phytophthora capsici and effectively controlled pepper blight and cucumber downy mildew. Tracking the distribution of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) fluorescein-labeled fluazinam nanocapsules revealed their presence in roots seven days after treatment. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis confirmed the easy absorption and transport of fluazinam nanocapsules by pepper plants. Moreover, treatment with fluazinam nanocapsules significantly increased the expression of two exocytosis genes, FACP and RABF2a , in pepper tissues. Lastly, fluazinam nanocapsules were found to enhance the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria in the soil microbial community. This study presents a promising approach to enhance the upward transport capability of non-systemic pesticides, offering novel insights into their application and improved efficacy.

The electroplating industry is an important source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination, but there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the occurrence, transport, and removal of PFAS in electroplating parks. In this study, we investigated typical electroplating parks in China and conducted the first full-scale removal of PFAS from chromium-plating wastewater using pore-enlarged granular activated carbon (GAC) and hydrophobic anion exchange resin (AER). The results showed that 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) gradually replaced perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in China’s electroplating industry. The conventional reduction-sedimentation process hardly removed 6:2 FTS from chromium-plating wastewater, while the special air flotation process resulted in over 60% of PFOS entering the chromium sludge cake. Based on the full-scale evaluation, GAC and AER adsorption were feasible technologies for removing PFAS from chromium-plating wastewater, among which AER had higher adsorption capacity and removal efficiency for PFAS but poorer selectivity for 6:2 FTS than for PFOS. It is estimated that GAC and AER adsorption have the potential to reduce the discharge of PFAS by 5030–8000 kg/year in China. This study reveals the current status of PFAS contamination in China’s electroplating industry and provides feasible technologies for PFAS control.

The extensive use of neonicotinoids (NEOs) in agricultural production has led to their pervasive presence in various environmental matrices, including human samples. Given the central role of fruits and vegetables in daily human diets, it is crucial to evaluate the levels of NEOs residues and their potential health risks. In this study, 3104 vegetable samples and 1567 fruit samples from the Shenzhen city were analyzed. Using the relative potency factor (RPF) method, the residue levels of six representative neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), thiamethoxam (THM), dinotefuran (DIN), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THI), were systematically evaluated. The estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) for both children and adults were calculated to gauge the prevalence and potential health risks of NEOs in fruits and vegetables. Acetamiprid (ACE) was the most frequently detected NEO in vegetables (69.4%) and fruits (73.9%), making it the predominant contributor to total residues. Further analyses indicated notably higher levels of imidacloprid-equivalent total neonicotinoids (IMI RPF ) in root and tuber vegetables (3025 μg/kg) and other fruits (243 μg/kg). A significant strong positive correlation (r = 0.748, P < 0.05) was observed between thiamethoxam (THM) and clothianidin (CLO), possibly due to their shared metabolic pathways. Although the mean HI values for adults and children from daily fruit (adults: 0.02, children: 0.01) and vegetable (adults: 0.02, children: 0.03) intake were generally below safety thresholds, some maximum HI values exceeded these limits, indicating that the potential health risks associated with NEOs exposure should not be overlooked.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a Gram-negative bacterium known for causing severe infections in neonates, particularly through contaminated infant formula. This study investigated the role of the outer membrane lipoprotein NlpD in the environmental tolerance of C. sakazakii . A nlpD knockout mutant was constructed, and its impact on desiccation resistance, biofilm formation, motility, and proteomic profiles was evaluated and compared with that of the wild-type strain. The nlpD mutant presented reduced desiccation tolerance, reduced ability to form a biofilm, and altered surface hydrophobicity and motility patterns. The complemented strain restored these phenotypic changes, confirming that the observed effects were specifically due to the deletion of nlpD . Proteomic analysis revealed significant differential expression of proteins involved in metabolic and biosynthetic pathways upon nlpD deletion. These findings emphasize the multifaceted role of NlpD in enhancing the environmental tolerance of C. sakazakii , suggesting its importance in the resilience and survival of the bacterium in adverse conditions.

Nimodipine, a calcium antagonist, exert beneficial neurovascular protective effects in clinic. Recently, Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) was reported to protect against liver fibrosis in mice, while the exact effects of Nimodipine on liver injury and hepatic fibrosis remain unclear. In this study, we assessed the effect of nimodipine in Thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis mouse model. Then, the collagen deposition and liver inflammation were assessed by HE straining. Also, the frequency and phenotype of NK cells, CD4 + T and CD8 + T cells and MDSC in liver and spleen were analyzed using flow cytometry. Furthermore, activation and apoptosis of primary Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and HSC line LX2 were detected using α-SMA staining and TUNEL assay, respectively. We found that nimodipine administration significantly attenuated liver inflammation and fibrosis. And the increase of the numbers of hepatic NK and NKT cells, a reversed CD4 + /CD8 + T ratio, and reduced the numbers of MDSC were observed after nimodipine treatment. Furthermore, nimodipine administration significantly decreased α-SMA expression in liver tissues, and increased TUNEL staining adjacent to hepatic stellate cells. Nimodipine also reduced the proliferation of LX2, and significantly promoted high level of apoptosis in vitro . Moreover, nimodipine downregulated Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl, simultaneously increased expression of JNK, p-JNK, and Caspase-3. Together, nimodipine mediated suppression of growth and fibrogenesis of HSCs may warrant its potential use in the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Macroemulsion polymerization is the most widely used approach for the fabrication of the monodisperse polymer particles. During the polymerization process, particle nucleation plays a critical role in determining particle size distribution of the ultimate particles. In general, the repulsion between ionic oligomeric radicals and micelles enhances particle nucleation, resulting in smaller particle sizes. In this study, methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammoniumchloride (MATMAC) and 2′azobis (2methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) were used as the cationic species to shield the negative charges of sodium dodecyl sulfate micelle, inducing in situ charge neutralization in the nucleation period, and further decreasing the particle number, enlarging the particle size of the ultimate latex particles. The ultimate particle size of MATMAC or AIBA system reached ~ 200 nm, which is the 2 times bigger than that without any cationic species. Moreover, a narrow particle size distribution was obtained for these systems. The in situ charge neutralization between the cationic species and surfactant molecules enhanced the oligomeric radical capture rate of micelles, further narrowing the particle nucleation time and inducing primary particle coagulation.
