Colorimetric sensing of ascorbic acid based on OsNPs-BSA-MnO2 nanosheets with peroxidase-like activity

Yong Zhu,Cuifeng Jiang,Jinjiang Yao,Xinmeng Wu

Resolving the aggregation of osmium (Os) nanozyme is important for improving its catalytic activity. Herein, Os nanoparticles-Bovine serum albumin-MnO 2 composite nanosheets (OsNPs-BSA-MnO 2 ) were synthesized by loading Os NPs on BSA-MnO 2 nanosheets. The Os NPs well dispersed on the surface of the nanosheets. The composite exhibited specific peroxidase-like activity with negligible oxidase-like activity. The catalytic mechanism was proved due to the generation of ·OH. Steady-state kinetics revealed stronger affinity for both H 2 O 2 and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate. Interestingly, OsNPs-BSA-MnO 2 composite nanosheets exhibited a much lower activation energy than other osmium-based nanozymes, indicating superior catalytic performance. Moreover, ascorbic acid could effectively inhibit the catalytic activity of composite nanosheet. Thus, a colorimetric method for ascorbic acid detection was established with the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.69 μM and excellent selectivity. For practical application, ascorbic acid in Water-soluble C100 and fetal bovine serum was detected with satisfactory recoveries

Precise modulation the coordination microenvironment and the phase of MnO2 for superior toluene catalytic property

Juan Lei,Liangmu Pei,Ying Huang,Xiaoli Ren,Lijun Cheng,Shuang Wang,Jiancheng Wang

Doping engineering plays a crucial role in the regulation of Mn-based catalysts. Herein, Cu–MnO 2 and Co–MnO 2 were obtained by simple doping engineering for toluene elimination. The synergistic regulation of crystal phase and coordination microenvironment of MnO 2 is successfully induced for the superior catalytic activity of Cu–MnO 2 . The results of characterizations showed that the crystal phase of β-MnO 2 transformed to ε-MnO 2 and (ε+α)-MnO 2 after introduction of Cu and Co, respectively. The lattice rearrangement of MnO 2 generated more oxygen vacancies and reactive oxygen species. Moreover, the precise modulation of MnO 2 's electronic structure induced abundant M-O V -Mn 3+ (M = Cu and Co) active complex sites, which further enhance other physicochemical properties such as Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and O ads /O latt of MnO 2 catalysts. This work highlights the driving effect of doping engineering on the phase transformation and electronic microstructure improvement of MnO 2 , providing new enlightenment for the exploitation and precise regulation of Mn-based catalysts.

Effects of graphite contents and microstructures on the cathode performances of alkaline Zn-MnO2 batteries

Chuanxi Zhao,Zhi Zhu,Kai Chang,Shijie Wang,Jiasheng Huang,Qin Wang,Lan Xia,Chunfei Zhang,He Miao

As one of the most successful aqueous zinc-based batteries, the alkaline Zn-MnO 2 batteries (AZMBs) suffer from the low utilization of MnO 2 . This work proposes a simple approach to address this issue by optimizing the graphite contents and microstructures in the cathode. It is found that the cathode of AZMB containing 9 wt% graphite exhibits the best electrochemical performances, achieving the discharge capacities of 240.6 mAh and 196.25 mAh at 10 and 25 mA, increasing by 7.7 % and 9.0 % compared to that of the commercial AZMBs, respectively. Additionally, by adopting the fully-expanded graphite with large specific surface area and thin thickness, the discharge capacities of AZMB increase by 8.7 % and 8.8 % at 10 and 25 mA, compared to that of the commercial AZMBs, respectively. The improving discharge properties of AZMBs with proper graphite content and microstructure can be ascribed to the high conversion rate of MnO 2 into the discharge product of MnOOH due to the improved conductive network. This work provides a valuable insight for the development of the aqueous Zn-based batteries.

Tailoring MnO2 nanowire defects with K-doping for enhanced electrochemical energy storage in aqueous supercapacitors

Jianghua Wu,Faisal Faiz,Mashkoor Ahmad,Miao Zhengjie,Zha Qiang,Wei Xu,Xiaojin Zhao,Xiaofang Pan,Yasir Faiz

The fabrication of supercapacitors with outstanding performance is presented with a distinct defect-rich nanostructures. A one-pot, energy-efficient method for synthesizing defective manganese dioxide nanowires doped with potassium (K 0.35 MnO 2 ) was developed. The introduction of potassium ions at 35 % birnessite resulted in a significant increase in lattice defects and an improvement in conductivity. Addition of KOH induces a phase transition from α-MnO 2 to δ-MnO 2 . These imperfections result in a greater quantity of active sites, which are crucial for the process of energy storage. The K 0.35 MnO 2 structure demonstrates a 405F/g increased capacity at a current density of 1 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor (K 0.35 MnO 2 /AC) that was manufactured exhibits a capacitance of 106.4F/g when operating at 1 A/g, while maintaining a maximum energy density of 71.5 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 672 W kg −1 . Furthermore, 92.7 % of the initial capacitance of the device is retained even after 8,000 cycles at 20 A/g. This study presents novel insights into the production of defective materials for energy storage applications through the utilization of a one-pot process as opposed to the multi-step method. In order to produce high-performance supercapacitors for practical applications, the results indicate that defect engineering is a crucial factor.

Construction of MnO2 Polymorphs via Trace Potassium Ion Doping for High-Performance Zinc-Ion Batteries

Zihao Song,Zhen Du,Yong Yang,Wensheng Wang,Yaqin Huang

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) emerges as a promising cathode active material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to its inherent safety and environmental friendliness. However, various crystalline forms of MnO2 (e.g., α- or β-MnO2) exhibit low structural stability or limited ion diffusion, resulting in poor cycling stability, particularly under high current density. Herein, a MnO2 polymorph (PM-MnO2) is constructed via the in situ doping of trace potassium ions (K+) into β-MnO2, remarkably addressing these challenges. By leveraging the high structural stability of the β-MnO2 phase and the facilitated ion diffusion in α-MnO2 phases, PM-MnO2 with a low atomic ratio of K to Mn of only 0.02 demonstrates excellent electronic and ionic conductivity, thereby achieving enhanced charge storage kinetics as a cathode material. The assembled AZIBs exhibit a high specific capacity of 295.3 mA h g–1 at a charge–discharge rate of 10 C (1 C = 308 mA h g–1), with an average capacity decay rate of only 0.017% per cycle over 3000 cycles, indicating significant potential for practical applications. This research provides experimental insight into how K+ doping affects the crystal structure of MnO2 and highlights the crucial role of polymorphic materials in enhancing the performance of MnO2-based AZIBs.

Agar Acts as Cathode Microskin to Extend the Cycling Life of Zn//α-MnO2 Batteries

Linqing Zuo,Haodong Sun,Xinhai Yuan,Juan Wen,Xi Chen,Shiyu Zhou,Yuping Wu,Teunis van Ree

The Zn/MnO2battery is a promising energy storage system, owing to its high energy density and low cost, but due to the dissolution of the cathode material, its cycle life is limited, which hinders its further development. Therefore, we introduced agar as a microskin for a MnO2electrode to improve its cycle life and optimize other electrochemical properties. The results showed that the agar-coating layer improved the wettability of the electrode material, thereby promoting the diffusion rate of Zn2+and reducing the interface impedance of the MnO2electrode material. Therefore, the Zn/MnO2battery exhibited outstanding rate performance. In addition, the agar-coating layer promoted the reversibility of the MnO2/Mn2+reaction and acted as a colloidal physical barrier to prevent the dissolution of Mn2+, so that the Zn/MnO2battery had a high specific capacity and exhibited excellent cycle stability.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Porous Biochar-Loaded MnO2 Nanocomposite for Sensitive Detection of Cd(II)

Baoli Wang,Kai Tang,Feng Yang

Understanding the extent of cadmium (Cd) contamination and its impact on the food industry and ecosystems is crucial; to this end, electrochemical methods provide sensitive and rapid responses for the in situ detection of heavy metal ions. In this paper, a sensitive Cd2+electrochemical sensor was constructed by using a composite material composed of biomass-derived porous carbon and manganese dioxide (MnO2/KLSC). The composite was demonstrated to have a porous structure with quasi-cubic MnO2particles evenly distributed on the carbon matrix. Using MnO2/KLSC as the electrode material, a simple electrochemical sensing platform was fabricated for the detection of Cd2+. The electrochemical analysis showed that the Cd2+sensor has good performance, with a linear detection range of 0.01–80.0 μmol/L and a detection limit of 9.8 nmol/L. Furthermore, the sensor shows excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and good anti-interference. The sensor was successfully applied to analyze rice and sea water samples, demonstrating satisfactory recovery rates. The good performance of MnO2/KLSC/GCE can be attributed to the excellent electrical conductivity, enlarged active surface area, and good electron transfer capability.

MXene-Intercalated GO/MnO2 via Layer-by-Layer Assembly for Highly Sensitive Wearable Capacitive Microsensors

Wenshuai Yang,Haohao Liu,Chenyang Hao,Zhengyong Lyu,Yinhua Jiang,Yuqiao Wang

The convergence of energy storage and sensing functionalities in a single miniaturized device represents a critical advancement for next-generation wearable electronics. Herein, we report an MXene/GO@MnO2 composite with a rationally designed layer-by-layer architecture for planar microsupercapacitors (PMSCs) and capacitive microsensors. By intercalating MnO2-decorated graphene oxide (GO@MnO2) between MXene layers, the interlayer spacing is expanded to 1.47 nm, enabling ultrafast ion diffusion (DLi+ = 3.1 × 10–12 cm2 s–1) and efficient vertical electron transport (σ⊥ = 247.7 S m–1). The resulting PMSCs achieve record-high areal capacitance (39.3 mF cm–2) and energy density (2.0 μWh cm–2) among MXene-based microdevices, with 91.1% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. As a wearable sensor, the device demonstrates multisignal detection capability, including temperature (10–40 °C, sensitivity = 6.3% °C–1), pressure (sensitivity >1.0 kPa–1, response time <10 ms), and biomechanical motions. This work provides a paradigm for designing multifunctional microsystems through strategic interlayer engineering of 2D materials.

Cu2+ intercalation bolstering the rate capability of δ-MnO2 cathode for aqueous zinc-ion battery

Kun Li,Yongxin Liang,Jingfeng Wu,Xu Guo,Guiting Wang,Zhi Zhang,Chenfeng Guo

Cost-effective manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) promises the economical advantage of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) but suffers its low electrical conductivity, the irreversibility of structural transformations during electrochemical reactions, and the slow kinetics of the reactions. This study employs a one-step co-precipitation technique to synthesize Cu 2+ intercalated δ-MnO 2 nanoflower. The intercalation of Cu 2+ not only enlarges the interlayer spacing through the interaction with water molecules, but also strengthens the interlayer structure with Cu 2+ as the pillars, improves the ionic conductivity, and enhances the rate capability of δ-MnO 2 . It is attributed to the co-insertion/extraction mechanism of Zn 2+ /H + . Therefore, the Cu 2+ intercalation δ-MnO 2 developed for ZIBs demonstrates a high specific capacity (300 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), long cycling stability (179 mAh g −1 until 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 89.9 % capacity retention), and superior rate capability (195 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ). Meanwhile, the flexible ZIBs assembled with this cathode material have wider commercial applicability.

Ultralong Bistable, Electrolytic MnO2-Based, Electrochromic Battery Enabled by Porous, Low-Barrier, Hydroxylated TiO2 Interface

Weixuan Wang,Zhiyuan Bai,Baojun Wang,Xiaorui Yang,Juan Liu,Hao Li,Yaogang Li,Qinghong Zhang,Chengyi Hou,Kerui Li,Hongzhi Wang

Electrochromic (EC) battery technology shows great potential in future “zero-energy building” by controlling outdoor solar transmission to tune heat gain as well as storing the consumed energy to reuse across other building systems. However, challenges still exist in exploring an electrochemical system to satisfy requirements on both ultra-long optical memory (also called bistability) without continuous power supply and high energy density. Herein, an EC battery is proposed to demonstrate ultra-long bistability (>760 h) based on the reversible deposition and dissolution of manganese oxide (MnO 2 ) without the addition of any mediators. A porous low-barrier hydroxylated titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) interface is incorporated to synergistically enrich Mn 2+ -affinity active sites for deposition and effectively reduce the electron transport barrier of MnO 2 for dissolution, thereby significantly improving the reversibility, high optical modulation (60.2% at 400 nm), and energy density (352 mAh m −2 ). The modification strategy is also verified on the cathode-less button cells with a much higher average coulombic efficiency (99.9%) compared to the batteries without the porous hydroxylated TiO 2 interface (74.6%). These achievements lay a foundation for advancements in both electrochromism and Zn-Mn aqueous batteries.

Synthesis of carbon dot LDHs@MnO2 tubular magnetic micromotors for detection and degradation of oxytetracycline

Chenzhang Liu,Jia Li,Min Zuo,Dickon H.L. Ng,Xiaohan Yang,Shuo Gao,Ziwei Lan

Antibiotic residues in water are closely related to human health and environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to detect and remove antibiotics in water. Here, by integrating nanozyme activity and self-propelled movement that can promote the mass transfer and diffusion in solution, a novel dual-functional CDs-LDHs@MnO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 magnetic micromotor with high exposed active sites for the detection and removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) was prepared by a biotemplate method. The micromotor could move autonomously in aqueous solution containing H 2 O 2 , reaching a mean speed of 158.35 ± 11.64 μm/s in 5 wt% H 2 O 2 . Due to the synergy of motion and the CDs-enhanced peroxidase-like activity, the micromotor could easily detect OTC in aqueous solution with a low detection limit (0.291 μM), wide detection range (0–100 μM), high selectivity, and a high magnetic recovery rate (near 85 %). More importantly, these micromotors also enabled rapid degradation of OTC through Fenton and Fenton-like reactions, reaching 87.93 % in the presence of 5 wt% H 2 O 2 . This work could provide a new idea for detecting and removing antibiotics from water.

Phase-Modified Strongly Coupled δ/ε-MnO2 Homojunction Cathode for Kinetics-Enhanced Zinc-Ion Batteries

Fu Wan,Ruiqi Liu,Yaoyang Xia,Kaida Hu,Yu Lei,Changding Wang,Sida Zhang,Shufan Li,Da Yang,Yujie Zheng,Weigen Chen

Rechargeable Zn-MnO2 batteries using mild water electrolytes have garnered significant interest owing to their impressive theoretical energy density and eco-friendly characteristics. However, MnO2 suffers from huge structural changes during the cycles, resulting in very poor stability at high charge–discharge depths. Briefly, the above problems are caused by slow kinetic processes and the dissolution of Mn atoms in the cycles. In this paper, a 2D homojunction electrode material (δ/ε-MnO2) based on δ-MnO2 and ε-MnO2 has been prepared by a two-step electrochemical deposition method. According to the DFT calculations, the charge transfer and bonding between interfaces result in the generation of electronic states near the Fermi surface, giving δ/ε-MnO2 a more continuous distribution of electron states and better conductivity, which is conducive to the rapid insertion/extraction of Zn2+ and H+. Moreover, the strongly coupled Mn–O–Mn interfacial bond can effectively impede dissolution of Mn atoms and thus maintain the structural integrity of δ/ε-MnO2 during the cycles. Accordingly, the δ/ε-MnO2 cathode exhibits high capacity (383 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), superior rate performance (150 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1), and excellent cycling stability over 2000 cycles (91.3% at 3 A g–1). Profoundly, this unique homojunction provides a novel paradigm for reasonable selection of different components.
