PVA-assisted spray deposited porous Li4Ti5O12 thin film as high-rate and long-cycle anode for lithium-ion thin-film batteries

Tu Lan,Jinxia Zhou,Tianzheng Xie,Kai Huang,Suichang Ong,Huili Yang,Heng Jiang,Yibo Zeng,Han Zhang,Xuanrui Guo,Linyi Wan,Ying Zhang,Hang Guo

Spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO), a zero-strain material, is a promising anode material for solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries (TFB). However, the preparation of high-performance Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 thin-film electrodes through facile methods remains a significant challenge. Herein, we present a novel approach to prepare a binder- and conductor-free porous Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (P-LTO) thin-film. This approach polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-assisted spray deposition and does not require the use of complex or expensive methods. Adding PVA to the precursor solution effectively prevents thin-film cracking during high-temperature annealing, enhances adhesion, and forms a highly interconnected porous structure . This unique structure shortens the lithium-ion diffusion pathways and facilitates electron transport . Therefore, P-LTO thin film electrodes demonstrate exceptional rate capacity of 104.1 mAh/g at a current density of 100C. In addition, the electrodes exhibit ultra-long cycle stability, retaining 80.9 % capacity after 10,000 cycles at 10C. This work offers a novel approach for the preparation of high-performance thin-film electrodes for TFBs.

Hydrophobic associations and cellulose nanofibers reinforced PVA/PAM multi-network conductive hydrogel with high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent mechanical properties

Mingyang Li,Yanen Wang,Qinghua Wei,Juan Zhang,Yalong An,Xiaohu Chen,Zongru Li,Dezao Jiao

With the growing demand for green and biocompatible flexible sensors, hydrogels have drawn attention as a new material for flexible wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to develop hydrogel flexible sensors with excellent mechanical properties, high toughness, high sensitivity and fast response through a simple approach. In this work, hydrophobic associations and cellulose nanofibers were introduced into a polyacrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol (PAM/PVA) dual-network hydrogel. The incorporation of a hydrophobic system strengthens the first polymer network, while cellulose nanofibers (CNF) enhance the second PVA freeze-thaw network. Notably, CNF tightly bridges the dual networks, forming extensive hydrogen bonds with the reinforced double-network structure. Under the synergistic effects of multiple networks and hydrogen bonding interactions, the composite hydrogel exhibits superior mechanical performance (1.82 MPa), outstanding toughness (5.41 MJ/m 3 ), excellent fatigue resistance, and good recovery properties. Additionally, the composite hydrogel demonstrates superior electrical conductivity, high sensitivity (GF = 7.89), and stable electrical signal output. It performs exceptionally well in practical applications, such as monitoring motion at human joints and integrating with peripheral circuits to control robotic hands. In summary, this work presents a simple and cost-effective method for fabricating high-performance composite hydrogels, which show great potential in tissue engineering, flexible electronics, and human-computer interaction.

Robust peony-like Cu3(PO4)2/UiO-66-NH2/PVA membranes with exceptional anti-fouling performance for high flux emulsion separation

Jingling Gong,Bin Xiang,Ruirui Jin,Zhaoyang Li,Weimin Liu,Jian Li

Membrane fouling is a key challenge to the sustainable operation of oil–water separation membranes. Constructing a stable hydration layer on the membrane surface as an oil-fouling resistance barrier by modulating the physicochemical structure of the membrane is one of the most effective strategies. Herein, inspired by the petal structure in nature, Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and UiO-66-NH 2 particles were combined by a self-assembly strategy to construct CUP (Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /UiO-66-NH 2 /PVA) composite membranes with anti-fouling capability against viscous crude oil. Benefiting from the petal structure and abundant polar groups within the membrane, the as-prepared membrane could easily combine with water molecules to form a stable hydration layer, which acted as a barrier to hinder the oil contamination of the membrane. Further, the hierarchical flower-like structure was conducive to the improvement of the emulsion breaking rate and permeation flux of oil-in-water emulsions. After 60 min continuous cross-flow separation, the obtained CUP composite membrane still remained prominent separation efficiency (99.6 %) and permeate flux (4685.96 LMH/bar). In addition, the CUP composite membranes showed outstanding resistance to acid and alkali as well as abrasion. This study provides an effective method for the advancement of high-performance membranes with high flux and anti-fouling capability in the flied of oily wastewater treatment.

Molecular Weight Tailored Hydrogen Bonding Networks in PVA/PEDOT: PSS: Decoupling the Conductivity-Flexibility Trade-Off for Robust Epidermal EMG Monitoring

Qiao Fan,Kai Zhang,Lanlan Wei,Yongji Gong,Shuhao Qin,Min He,Yufei Liu,Tingting Luo,Shigui Peng,Jie Yu

Flexible wearable devices have significant potential for diverse applications, prioritizing the development of portable, safe, and stable dry electrodes. This study focused on designing six poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS) variants with controlled molecular weights (10k-70k), combined with a water-soluble soft polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), to enhance the electrical properties, mechanical strength, and long-term stability of the Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT): PSS polymer complex. We systematically examined morphological modifications, interactions, and conductive processes of PVA/PEDOT: PSS films, along with the mechanisms behind their improved stretchability and resistance stability. Results indicate that low molecular weight PSS provides the best mechanical flexibility due to stronger hydrogen bonding with PVA, enhancing elongation at break. However, insulating domains in PSS and PVA impede carrier transport, leading to a discontinuous charge hopping process along the PEDOT backbone, which decreases electrical conductivity. Conversely, high molecular weight PSS exhibits poor dispersion of rigid segments and conductive materials, resulting in decreased electrical and mechanical properties. Notably, with a molecular weight of 34k, the PVA/PEDOT: PSS film exhibits excellent electrical performance and mechanical flexibility, maintains good resistance stability after 1000 loading and unloading cycles at 30% strain, and demonstrates clear and stable electromyography (EMG) signals, indicating vast potential for EMG electrodes.

Hydrogen bond-mediated reversible BHT/PVA nanocarriers integrating sustained release kinetics and small-size synergy for potentiated pesticide stability and longevity

Hongfa Duan,Xiaochi Liu,Lulu Bian,Zhongyi Li,Ning Li,Muhammad Umair Sial,Zhe Sun,Haiqiang Gao,Beixing Li,Daxia Zhang,Feng Liu

The preparation of pesticide-loaded microcapsules using biodegradable polymers and the balance between their sustained-release performance and small-size effects represent an effective strategy to enhance pesticide utilization efficiency. This study devised a one-step sol-gel self-assembly approach to fabricate abamectin-loaded microcapsules using biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as raw materials. The results demonstrated that the reaction through hydrogen bonding by PVA and BHT at the o/w interface could generate shells and encapsulate pesticides to make microcapsules. Increasing PVA usage could reduce the particle size and enhance shell stability. The addition of BHT also improved the shell structure stability and encapsulation efficiency, whereas 3 %–7 % concentrations impeded the formation of the shell structure. Abamectin, which has a self-polymerizing ability, also increases microcapsule stability. A 54 °C temperature increase was maintained for 24 h to induce emulsion separation. Subsequent cooling and agitation prompts the reconstitution of pesticide-loaded microcapsules. The synergistic effect of the water-responsive mechanism, high encapsulation efficiency, and thicker shells endows nano-formulations with superior sustained-release performance compared to micro-scale formulations. The photostability of abamectin nanocapsules is significantly enhanced by 68.26 % compared to conventional suspensions, and the content of active ingredients remains at 50.54 % after 60 h of release under light conditions. Owing to their nanoscale sustained-release characteristics, their biological safety is improved by 36.43 %. The encapsulated Aba@BHT-PVA nano-system, leveraging excellent rainwater erosion resistance and leaf surface affinity, significantly prolongs its leaf retention time. Synergizing with the small-size effect, it demonstrates substantial enhancement in both the control efficacy and persistence against Plutella xylostella . Owing to its unique properties and easy regulation, this fabrication technique has great application value in the future.

Mengjie Li,Tingting Han,Huiwen Liu,Juan Xu,Chong Sun,Yongzhi Zhu,Weimin Xu,Daoying Wang

In this work, an intelligent and sensitive polyvinyl alcohol-acidochromic chitosan (PVA-ACS) nano-sensing label was developed for visually monitoring meat freshness. Based on the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-4-[4-(ethylsulfurate sulfonyl)-phenylazo]-naphthalene (HESPN), ACS was prepared through hydrogen bonding between the sulfonic acid groups in HESPN structure and the hydroxyl groups in chitosan (CS). Herein, PVA was used as the functional matrix and electrospinning technology was employed in this process. The chemical structure, surface morphology, mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, thermal stability, and biocompatibility of PVA-ACS nano-sensing label were investigated. Moreover, the PVA-ACS nano-sensing label exhibited sensitive color responsiveness and reversible color switching, and the properties enabled the naked-eye inspection of meat freshness during production, processing and transportation. Furthermore, a strategy incorporated the nano-sensing labels with a smartphone was developed to record color information in conjunction with the color recognition software (ColorColl). This work provided a valuable perspective for real-time freshness monitoring with high satisfaction and efficiency, opening new possibilities for meat quality grading.

Improved antifouling properties of PVA hydrogel via an organic semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride catalyzed surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization

Jinsheng Zhou,Zixiang Huang,Yugui Sun,Mengmeng Cui,Zhongkuan Luo,Bin Yu,Xianghui Zou,Huiyuan Hu

An innovative g-C 3 N 4 catalyzed surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-photoATRP) has been developed to construct MEDSAH zwitterionic polymer brushes on PVA hydrogel surface. g-C 3 N 4 catalyzed SI-photoATRP is temporal and spatial control. As a heterogeneous reaction system, it can solve the catalyst residues problem. After grafting with MEDSAH, surface chemical composition and morphology of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel confirmed that MEDSAH was successfully grafted onto PVA hydrogel. Thermal property of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel decreased and hydrophilicity increased. No statistically significant differences between PVA and PVA-g-pMEDSAH were observed on mechanical properties. Cytotoxicity in vitro of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel could be considered as no cytotoxicity for L929 and NDHF cells. The antifouling properties of PVA-g-pMEDSAH hydrogel were significantly improved due to the enhancement of the surface hydration and steric repulsion effects caused by pMEDSAH polymer brushes. In addition, g-C 3 N 4 is easier to modify to enhance the photocatalyst property. Thus, the heterogeneous reaction system of g-C 3 N 4 catalyzed SI-photoATRP has huge potential applied in biomaterials surface modification.

Modification of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane by sequential deposition of cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) for nanofiltration

Yuhao Zhang,Chuang Yu,Zhenhua Lü,Sanchuan Yu

This study focused on the modification of flat-sheet polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes for nanofiltration (NF) through sequential deposition of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) with glutaraldehyde cross-linking after each deposition. The contents of PVA and CMCNa in the coating solutions were varied to optimize the membrane performance and the modified membranes were characterized in terms of surface and permeation properties. It was found that the membrane surface became denser, more hydrophilic, and negatively charged at neutral pH after modification and the modified membrane possessed the NF separation characteristic. Under 5.0 bar, the optimized modified membrane exhibited a high-pure water flux of 89.5 l/m2 h and rejections of 37.8 and 93.8% to 500 mg/l NaCl and Na2SO4 aqueous solution, respectively. The modified membrane could also efficiently remove anionic dyes from aqueous solution, showing retentions of 99.7 and 99.5% to methyl blue and congo red, respectively, under neutral pH and 5.0 bar. Additionally, the modified membrane possessed good chlorine stability, and acid and alkaline resistances. The technique developed is potentially applicable for the fabrication of high-flux negatively charged NF membranes for partial desalination and anionic dye removal.

High-performance multifunctional fGNs@PDA/PVA composites with superior thermal conductivity, electromagnetic interference shielding, and mechanical strength for advanced thermal management applications

Zi-Huang Yuan,Jingshuai Chen,Yupeng Yuan,Chang-Jie Mao

Highly integrated and power-dense electronic systems require materials that can simultaneously dissipate heat and mitigate electromagnetic interference, as both thermal hotspots and electromagnetic radiation compromise device stability and lifetime. Thermally conductive polymer composites are attractive for electronic packaging, but their performance is limited by discontinuous phonon-transport networks, filler restacking, and interfacial thermal resistance. Herein, a multiscale interfacial and architectural engineering strategy is developed to construct multifunctional polydopamine-coated exfoliated graphene/poly (vinyl alcohol) (fGNs@PDA/PVA) composite films. Commercial graphene nanosheets were first treated by CTAB-assisted exfoliation to reduce restacking and improve surface accessibility. A PDA interfacial layer was introduced as a noncovalent molecular bridge to improve graphene dispersion and interfacial coupling with PVA, while vacuum-assisted filtration and hot pressing assembled the fillers into a highly oriented layered architecture for in-plane phonon transport. The fGNs@PDA/PVA film achieved an in-plane thermal conductivity of 12.73 W m −1 K −1 at 40 wt%, corresponding to a 38.78-fold enhancement over pristine PVA and 2.8 times that of GNs/PVA. Theoretical calculations show that PDA increases the filler–matrix binding energy from 0.512 to 1.637 eV and strengthens interfacial interactions. The composite also delivered an EMI shielding effectiveness of 32 dB in the X-band and a tensile strength of 43.21 MPa, 74.1% higher than that of pure PVA. LED cooling tests further confirmed faster heat spreading and accelerated cooling of the 40 wt% fGNs@PDA/PVA film compared with pristine PVA. This work demonstrates a practical and scalable approach for designing multifunctional polymer composites capable of addressing the dual challenges of thermal management and EMI shielding in advanced electronic systems.

A facile single-step strategy for sustainable, antibacterial, high-barrier PVA coated paper: Using anhydride as solvent and crosslinker dual-functional agents

Wenle Zhu,Tongxin Zhou,Huili Wang,Qingsong Feng,He Wang,Zhaoping Song,Xiaona Liu,Lepan Cao

The excessive use of non-biodegradable plastic food packaging has led to severe environmental pollution, highlighting the urgent need for eco-friendly materials that are biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and effective in food preservation. This work discusses the feasibility of preparing multifunctional paper packaging materials coated by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and natural thymol (THY), a poor water solubility naturally derived phenolic compound with antimicrobial activity. An emulsion was prepared using octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) as the solvent for THY, xanthan gum as the emulsifier, and this emulsion was applied as a functional additive into PVA coating. OSA also served as a crosslinking agent for PVA, enhancing the coating density and improving the barrier properties of the coated paper. The results demonstrated that OSA did not reduce the antibacterial efficacy of THY, confirming the compatibility between OSA and THY. When the emulsion concentration was 3.0%, the water vapor permeability of the coated paper decreased from 4.75 × 10⁻¹ ³ to 3.02 × 10⁻¹ ³ kg·m/(m²·s·Pa) compared with PVA coated paper, and its oil resistance Kit rating reached 12. The THY/OSA/PVA coated paper extended the shelf life of strawberries to 8 days without visible spoilage. This work provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional packaging material, offering a convenient method to integrate water insoluble solid functional components into bio-based degradable materials without traditional organic solvents. It advances the technology of environmentally friendly food packaging, provides insights for the development of active packaging and biodegradable materials, and lays a foundation for the future optimization and industrialization of such materials.

Preparation, optimization and in vitro activity analysis of PVA/gelatin/sodium alginate-based (PGS) hydrogels loaded with Gardeniae Fructus Preparatus (JZZ) extract

Chenhao Liu,Chuchu Shan,Zebin Yu,Changyi Ye,Yunqiu Shen,Chunmei Yuan,Yifeng Pan,Yuyan Zhang,Xingying Chen

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was introduced into the traditional gelatin (Gel)/sodium alginate (SA) system, and PVA/Gel/SA hydrogels (PGS) were prepared by freeze-thaw cycling and Cu2+ crosslinking. After screening, proper PVA/Gel ratios were found to significantly improve mechanical strength and flexibility, with all formulations showing high water content and swelling ratios. Among them, PGS4 (5% Gel, 3% PVA, 2% SA) and PGS6 (5% Gel, 7% PVA, 2% SA) showed optimal mechanical performance (321.65 and 428.80 kPa) and proper swelling behavior (swelling ratios of 13.80 and 12.65 at 24 h). After loading the extract of Gardeniae Fructus Preparatus (JZZ), the water content of JZZ-PGS4 and JZZ-PGS6 decreased slightly, while swelling behavior was basically unchanged. JZZ-PGS4 had favorable stability (37.21% degradation at 14 days), high encapsulation efficiency (82.73%) and effective drug release behavior. Both JZZ-PGS4 and JZZ-PGS6 exhibited strong antioxidant activity. PGS4 and PGS6 showed moderate antibacterial activity and good cytocompatibility, which were enhanced by JZZ extract. In conclusion, JZZ-PGS4, possessing balanced comprehensive properties, could serve as a drug-loaded hydrogel platform based on the PVA/Gel/SA system for chronic diabetic wounds.
