The aim of the study was to determine the effect of inorganic core-shell SiO2 nanoparticles modified with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) layer, on the optical and electrochemical properties of poly vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). The core-shell SiO2 nanoparticles were first modified with PMMA to improve its dispersibility and compatibility in the polymer matrix. The morphology and structural properties of the core-shell SiO2 nanoparticles before and after modification were characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM analysis. Then the modified SiO2 nanoparticles were used to prepare the composite GPE, composed of chemically modified core-shell structured SiO2-PMMA and PVDF-HFP polymer matrix. The transformation of nano-silica to SiO2-PMMA nanoparticles shows the better compatibility of PMMA and PVDF-HFP that favours the silica to be well dispersed in the organic matrix and significantly improve the doping effect. Various concentrations of modified SiO2-PMMA were used to dope PVDF-HFP GPEs. The results indicate that the 10% doping shows the highest ionic conductivity i.e. 2.22 × 10−3 s cm−1. In addition, the composite GPEs show the high transmittance and good thermal stability; therefore it can add important insight into developing high-performance materials for electrochromic devices.

The use of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microfiltration (MF) membranes to purify oily water has received much attention. However, it is challenging to obtain high-performance PVDF microfiltration membranes due to severe surface fouling and rapid decline of permeability. This study explored a new approach to fabricate high-performance PVDF/silica (SiO2) composite membrane via the use of a polymer solution featuring lower critical solution temperature (LCST) characteristics and the non-solvent thermally induced phase separation method (NTIPS). Coupling with morphological observations, the membrane formation kinetics were analyzed in depth to understand the synergistic effect between the LCST solution properties and fabrication conditions in NTIPS. Utilizing such a synergistic effect, the transition from finger-like macrovoid pores to bi-continuous highly connected pores could be flexibly tuned by increasing the PVDF concentration and the weight ratio of SiO2/PVDF in the dope solution and by raising the coagulation temperature to above the LCST of the solution. The filtration experiments with surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion showed that the permeation flux of the PVDF/SiO2composite membranes was higher than 318 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1and the rejection above 99.2%. It was also shown that the PVDF/SiO2composite membranes, especially those fabricated above the LCST, demonstrated better hydrophilicity, which resulted in significant enhancement in the anti-fouling properties for oil/water emulsion separation. Compared to the benchmark pure PVDF membrane in oily water purification, the optimal composite membrane T70 was demonstrated via the 3-cycle filtration experiments with a significantly improved flux recovery ratio (Frr) and minimal reduced irreversible fouling (Rir). Overall, with the developed method in this work, facile procedure to tune the membrane morphology and pore structure was demonstrated, resulting in high performance composite membranes suitable for oil/water emulsion separation.Keywords:PVDF/SiO2composite membrane;lower critical solution temperature (LCST);nonsolvent thermally induced phase separation (NTIPS);structural control;oil-in-water emulsion

Ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer nanocomposites have garnered considerable attention for film capacitor applications. However, the addition of highly polarized inorganic fillers with a large proportion into PVDF leads to poor processability and high energy loss, which significantly destroy the structural integrity of the film and restrain the practical application of film capacitors. Herein, we constructed core–shell BaTiO3 (BTO)@graphene oxide (GO) architectures via an aerosolization method and incorporated them into the PVDF matrix, which not only provided a highly insulating GO layer to improve the breakdown strength and suppress the dielectric loss but also improved the dispersion of fillers to realize a high interfacial interaction. The 0.4 wt % BTO@GO/PVDF film exhibited a high discharged energy density of 2.9 J cm–3 at 200 MV m–1, 70% higher than that of the PVDF film, a charge–discharge efficiency of 86%, and a depressed dielectric loss of 0.07 at 1 kHz. Moreover, the ultralow content of fillers can greatly improve the processability and reduce the defects with the structural integrity as well as the performance stability of the film during stretching. This work sheds light on the improvement of energy storage performance of polymer nanocomposites for film capacitors.

The PVDF/PVC superhydrophobic composite membrane was prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation method. When the concentration of PVDF/PVC(= 85/15) is 4%, DMF can be used as a solvent to prepare PVDF/PVC superhydrophobic composite membrane by using the simple and applicable NIPS method. Through static contact angle and rolling angle, it was found that the maximum contact angle of PVDF/PVC composite membrane with low concentration can reach 152°, rolling angle is 3 degrees, and the surface potential energy is also relatively low about 8°. It was found by DSC that the crystallinity of PVDF/PVC composite membrane with low concentration was higher, SEM shows that the surface of 4% PVDF/PVC composite membrane has nano scale protrusion, and AMF finds that the surface of 4% PVDF/PVC composite membrane was high Surface roughness. When the surface roughness was high, the surface hydrophobicity is improved, the wetting problem was alleviated, the self-cleaning ability of the membrane is improved, and the membrane pollution is reduced. It was found that the 4% PVDF/PVC composite membrane prepared by low concentration method has a long-lasting self-cleaning performance and can be used as an organic coating in the field of self-cleaning.

As one of the components of the lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the separator plays a vital part in the safety and electrochemical performance. In this work, a ZrO 2 -ceramic-coated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous separator for LIBs was successfully prepared by electrospinning, subsequent dopamine hydrophilic modification and biomimetic mineralization process. These preparation processes were environmentally friendly and simple. The ZrO 2 -ceramic coating endows the separator with outstanding electrolyte wettability and thermal stability. To be specific, the separator exhibits higher ionic conductivity (2.261 mS cm −1 ), high porosity (85.1%) and favorable electrolyte wettability (352%), and lower interfacial impedance (220 Ω). Compared with commercial polyolefin separator and PVDF nanofibrous separator, the ZrO 2 -ceramic-coated PVDF nanofibrous separator exhibits excellent rate performance and well cyclic stability. Most importantly the ZrO 2 –PDA/PEI–PVDF separator can still maintain a complete structure even at a high temperature of 300 °C. Compared with commercial separators, it greatly improves the safety of lithium ion batteries at high temperature. Therefore, this separator has far-reaching prospects for improving lithium ion safety and cycle stability.

Oil and organic pollutants removal becomes an efficient solution to dispose of industrial oily and textile dye wastewater. This study proposes a lotus leaf-like bionic nanofibrous membrane with underwater superoleophobic for highly efficient oil-water separation. Papillary structure of the bionic membrane is formed by electrospraying of PVDF and TiO 2 solutions on the surface of beaded-structure PVDF/TiO 2 membrane. Dopamine is then decorated on the resultant PVDF/TiO 2 membrane by in situ polymerization to be with hydrophilic-underwater oleophobic property for highly efficient oil-water separation. This bionic membrane has > 99 % oil-water separation efficiency, and high flux of 1389 ± 67 L m −2 h −1 . Its contact angle of underwater petroleum ether and dichlomethane reaches 155° and 152°, respectively. Moreover, it has excellent water transport capacity, photocatalytic property, as well as high separation efficiency and flux even after 5-cycle filtration. This bionic nanofibrous membrane will become a promising candidate in clean production, industrial oil/water separation, water purification and efficient liquid transmission.

Modifying membranes with nanoparticles is a promising approach to mitigate biofouling in membrane preparation processes. However, high costs of the modification agents limit the practical applications of this approach. In this work, we developed a cost-effective and ecofriendly method to provide polyvinylidene fluoride membrane with a strong antimicrobial activity by loading silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this approach, gallic acid (GA) was used as a capturing and reducing agent to in situ synthesize AgNPs on membrane surface. The resulting AgNPs-functionalized membrane exhibited a 3.5-fold higher pure water flux and enhanced antifouling capacity compared to the control membrane. Specifically, AgNPs endowed the membrane a compelling antimicrobial activity on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, evidenced by diffusion inhibition zone and bacterial proliferation test results. More importantly, pomegranate peel extracts rich in GA was effectively used in such a membrane functionalization approach. Taken together, this work demonstrates the robust in situ fabrication of antimicrobial AgNPs-functionalized membranes through bio-derived GA and provides a promising alternative for their potential practical applications.

With the ever-increasing discharge of industrial oily wastewater, oil-water separation has attracted widespread concern in recent years. In this work, we fabricated a tannic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone/SiO 2 composite coating decorated PVDF membrane for effective oil-in-water emulsions separation. Tannic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone form complex through hydrogen bonding , generating stable sol after associating with SiO 2 , which endows the hydrophobic PVDF membrane with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. The rejections of the modified membrane for the emulsions were higher than 99.9 % and the 5-min fluxes reached over 690 L∙m −2 h -1 . Four rounds of continuous separation exhibited that the membrane has outstanding flux recovery capability with water washing among each cycle. We envision that this natural polyphenol chemistry inspired coating process with green, low-energy, cost-effective advantages indicates great potential for practical applications.

Harvesting solar energy via pyroelectric technology is highly desired because it is a sustainable and clean solution to yield electricity. However, the low power output (below 5mW/m 2 ) and bulky device design of traditional devices hinder their practical applicability. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient sunlight-triggered pyroelectric nanogenerator (S-PENG) design that achieves unprecedented performance of 21.3 mW/m 2 under one sun irradiation. This is achieved via enhancing both the solar harvesting properties and the pyroelectric efficiencies rationally by employing polyethyleneimine (PEI) chemically modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO-PEI), and a pyroelectric layer based on a polarized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate its practical application by adapting the S-PENG into a wearable outdoor bracelet. Using a facile hand-waving motion to replace the traditional bulky sunlight-alternating device, our compact bracelet can charge a fitness tracker after only 1 h of outdoor exposure, demonstrating its capability to be seamlessly integrated with outdoor sports activities. We expect our rational design to promote the development of S-PENG and pave the way for the utilization of sunlight as a viable on-the-go electrical source.

Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 magnetic photocatalytic particles were synthesized and characterized. A composite PVDF separation membrane blended with Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 particles was prepared by the phase inversion method. The main purpose was to explore the effect of magnetic fields on the performance of membranes during coagulation bath. The structure characterization, permeability, interception ability, and anti-pollution performance of inorganic particle blend membranes were then tested. Results showed that magnetic field coagulation baths have little effect on the pore structure and hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. When the liquid membranes was condensed under a magnetic field, the magnetic photocatalytic particles could migrate at a greater rate to the surface of the membrane. Through performance tests of the PVDF modified membranes, it was found that a magnetic coagulation bath could promote more Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 to aggregate on the surface of the membrane, which led to the blend membrane formed under the magnetic coagulation bath had better antifouling performance against humic acid solution under ultraviolet light irradiation. Membranes with 0.5 wt% magnetic photocatalytic particles in a magnetic field coagulation bath performed best. When filtered under the condition of ultraviolet light, its pure water flux was 1752 L/(m 2 h), and the rejection rate of 20 mg/L humic acid solution was 67.17%. The flux attenuation before and after filtration was 38.84%, the flux recovery rate was 91.10%, and the irreversible pollution index was only 8.90%.

The aluminum-fluorine reaction hold great potential in crippling Al pre-combustion sintering and agglomeration during combustion. Herein, the laser-sensitive Al/PVDF fuel rich films were prepared by employing a sponge-like microvoids structure through a phase inversion method coupled with micro-segmented flow, displaying the laser power threshold and ignition delay time by less than 4.8 J·cm −2 and 1.57 ms compared to unignited dense Al/PVDF pellet by a 19.6 J·cm −2 laser. The decreased Al atoms plasma electron temperature and a reduced F irons density with the increased Al content, imply a reduction of Al-F reaction ratio. This Al/PVDF films reveal 5 times higher flame propagation rate and mass consumption compared to the vacuum freeze-dried one, contributing to enhanced convective heat transfer in sponge-like microvoids channels. The ambient oxygen and released HF diffusion in microvoids, creating Al-F, Al-O competitive reaction path. The Al-O and Al-F reactions proportions of Al-30, Al-50 and Al-70 in open air were determined by 2:98, 41:59 and 74.5:22 after inferring evaporated AlF 3 combustion products and O 2 reactant by several assumption and calculation based on XPS results. The released gaseous H 2 and AlF 3 from Al droplet surface reduce nano-aluminum sintering. The different reaction paths of Al/PVDF films during combustion and thermal analysis were analyzed.
