Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely applied in the field of food safety due to its exceptional molecular recognition capabilities. In this study, a simple method for preparing a flexible SERS substrate was designed for the ultrasensitive real-time detection of the banned drugs malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV). The substrate was prepared by patterned spraying of a superhydrophobic coating prepared from candle soot onto the surface of a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sponge, followed by simple Ag nanoparticle (Ag NP) deposition in the superhydrophilic region. The PVA sponge with special hydrophilicity can completely absorb the droplets to be measured within 1–5 s without additional drying treatment. And the Ag NPs aggregated by potassium iodide (KI) resulted in a significant enhancement of the Raman signal, enabling the substrate to realize the detection of MG and CV as low as 100 fg/mL (2.74 × 10–13 M) and 1 pg/mL (2.45 × 10–12 M), respectively, with a long lifetime (90 days). Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties of the flexible substrate, the substrate can realize the simultaneous detection of very small amounts of MG and CV on the surface of crayfish by simple wiping, which has great application prospects in the field of food safety and field inspection.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a powerful technology in trace analysis. However, the wide applications of SERS in practice are limited by the expensive substrate materials and the complicated preparation processes. Here we report a simple and economical galvanic-replacement-assisted synthesis route to prepare Ag nanoparticles on Cu(0) foil (nanoAg@Cu), which can be directly used as SERS substrate. The fabrication process is fast (ca. 10 min) and easily scaled up to centimeters or even larger. In addition, the morphology of the nanoAg@Cu (with Ag particles size from 30 nm to 160 nm) can be adjusted by various additives (e.g., amino-containing ligands). Finally, we show that the as-prepared nanoAg@Cu can be used for SERS characterization of two-dimensional polymers, and ca. 298 times relative enhancement of Raman intensity is achieved. This work offers a simple and economical strategy for the scalable fabrication of silver-based SERS substrate in thin film analysis.

In this study, a simple, rapid and sensitive tryptophan (Trp) detection method was proposed, which combined surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with diazo coupling reaction and silver dendritic substrate. Two derivatization reagents, 4-mercaptoaniline (PATP) and 2-fluoro-4-mercaptoaniline (2-F-PATP) were used for derivatization reaction with Trp, which can be controlled by experimental parameters such as derivatization reagent concentration and sodium nitrite concentration. The partial least squares quantitative (PLS) detection model is applied in determining the concentration of Trp. The determination coefficient (R 2 ) of PLS model was 0.9617 based on PATP and 0.9950 on 2-F-PATP. The LOD of the two derivatization methods were as low as 10 −11 mol/L. This combined technique has the characteristics of simple operation, high sensitivity and good selectivity, and shows great potential in the detection of Trp in biological media.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique is the most promising methods for detecting trace amounts of analytes owing to its high molecular specificity and high sensitivity. Here, we make an integrated SERS platform consisted of plasmonic nanoparticles with high-intensity SERS hotspots and slippery polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces. The urchin-like silver nanoparticles (AgNUs) have numerous branched structures and nanogaps, providing intense SERS hotspots. The PDMS surfaces with analyte enrichment was prepared using a simple UV photocatalytic method without catalysts. The optimized SERS platform detects crystal violet molecules at 0.1 pM in ethanol solution, using 5 μL of analyte, with an enhancement factor as high as 1.29 × 10 10 . Furthermore, it exhibits multiplex detections of trace organic pollutants in river water samples. This study presents versatile SERS sensing platform with analyte enrichment, potential for highly sensitive identification of interest analytes in complex environments.

In the realm of molecular detection, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique has garnered increasing attention due to its rapid detection, high sensitivity, and non-destructive characteristics. However, conventional rigid SERS substrates are either costly to fabricate and challenging to prepare over a large area, or they exhibit poor uniformity and repeatability, making them unsuitable for inspecting curved object surfaces. In this work, we present a flexible SERS substrate with high sensitivity as well as good uniformity and repeatability. First, the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is manually formulated and cured. SiO2/Ag layer on the substrate can be obtained in a single process by using ion beam sputtering. Then, reactive ion etching is used to etch the upper SiO2 layer of the film, which directly leads to the desired densely packed nanostructure. Finally, a layer of precious metal is deposited on the densely packed nanostructure by thermal evaporation. In our proposed system, the densely packed nanostructure obtained by etching the SiO2 layer directly determines the SERS ability of the substrate. The bottom layer of silver mirror can reflect the penetrative incident light, the spacer layer of SiO2 and the top layer of silver thin film can further localize the light in the system, which can realize the excellent absorption of Raman laser light, thus enhancing SERS ability. In the tests, the prepared substrates show excellent SERS performance in detecting crystalline violet with a detection limit of 10−11 M. The development of this SERS substrate is anticipated to offer a highly effective and convenient method for molecular substance detection.

This paper presents the design of a bottom-up "sandwich" configuration substrate via electrostatic self-assembly. A silver microplate (AgMP) serves as the stable structural base, onto which monolayer graphene is wet-transferred. Au@Ag nanocubes (Au@Ag NCs) are then assembled on the upper layer through liquid-liquid three-phase self-assembly, forming a Au@AgNCs/G/AgMP “sandwich” substrate. The combination of electromagnetic enhancement from noble metal nanoparticles and chemical enhancement from graphene synergistically amplifies the signal of detected molecules, leading to significant Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate that this substrate can detect Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) at concentrations as low as 10 –12 M and Crystal Violet (CV) at 10 –9 M. Moreover, the substrate can detect Aspartame (APM) at concentrations as low as 0.0625 g/L, well below the typical daily intake levels for humans. These findings indicate that the substrate exhibits excellent SERS performance and holds significant potential for broad applications.

TiN–Ag@Ag composite substrates were prepared via ammonia reduction nitridation followed by electrochemical deposition. Fabricated TiN–Ag@Ag substrates were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy activity of these substrates was evaluated using ibuprofen as the probe molecule. The size of the Ag particles prepared via electrochemical deposition was approximately 1 μm, and Ag nanoparticles with an average particle size of 100 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of TiN–Ag films. The Raman signal of ibuprofen was significantly enhanced, and the minimum detection concentration of ibuprofen was 10 –5 M. The mechanism by which the TiN–Ag@Ag composite substrate enhanced the Raman signals was analyzed using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory implemented in the Gaussian software. Overall, charge transfer and the local electromagnetic field effect enhanced the Raman signals of ibuprofen.

Au BPs/MXene mixtures were composited with PVDF membranes by vacuum filtration, which enabled the sensitive detection. It combined electromagnetic mechanism and chemical mechanism to achieve a synergistic enhancement of the detection, resulting in a good stability of the SERS substrate. With fluorescent dyes including rhodamine 6G and methylene blue as templates for the SERS sensor, the SERS substrate possessed high sensitivity and reproducibility on account of the strong interactions between the dye molecules and the Au BPs/MXene. In addition, the photochemical performance of the composite membrane material for rhodamine 6G and methylene blue was investigated, which demonstrated the potential of AuBPs/MXene@PVDF membrane for photochemical applications. The study of the SERS detection and photochemical degradation performance of the composite membrane material in different water sources demonstrated that the excellent testing capability of the AuBPs/MXene@PVDF membrane material can be used for reliable and highly sensitive monitoring and application in water environment analysis.

Graphite carbon (G) @ silver (Ag) @ porous silicon Bragg mirror (PSB) composite SERS substrate was successfully synthesized using electrochemical etching (ec) and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) techniques with silver nitrate as the source of silver and glucose as the source of carbon. The PSB was used as a functional scaffold for the synthesis of graphite-carbon and silver composite nanoparticles (G@AgNPs) on its surface, thereby combining SERS activity and antioxidant properties. To our knowledge, this is the first time that G@AgNPs has been synthesized on the PSB using glucose as a carbon source. The synthesized G@Ag@PSB was utilized as a SERS platform for the detection of gallic acid (GA). Test results demonstrated that the substrate exhibited a remarkable SERS enhancement capability for GA, with the enhancement factor (EF) reaching 2 × 10 5 . The reproducibility of the SERS spectral signal was excellent, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.5 %. The sensitivity test results showed that the linear range of GA detection based on G@Ag@PSB composite SERS substrate was 2 × 10 -3 -2 × 10 -12 M. The relationship between GA concentration and SERS signal intensity exhibited a strong linear correlation, with a linear correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.97634. Moreover, even with an extended storage period, only a marginal decline in the signal intensity of GA on the substrate was observed. The results of this study demonstrate that the prepared G@Ag@PSB composite SERS substrate had good potential application performance as a low-cost SERS detection platform suitable for commercial use. In addition, this advance facilitates the further exploration of more nanomaterials with ultra-high sensitivity in SERS technology.

In order to solve the problem of poor sensitivity and selectivity of conventional SERS substrates, we synthesized Mo 1−x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets in this paper by a two-step hydrothermal method. The structure and morphology of the synthesized Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets were characterized by XRD and SEM,respectively. The results show that the Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheet has an irregular layered structure. Further, the SERS properties of Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets were tested by using rhodamine 6G (R6G), crystalline violet (CV), and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as probe molecules, respectively. The test results demonstrated that the nanosheets were specific to R6G and CV probe molecules, and the mechanism of selectivity was due to CT enhancement. In addition, Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity in R6G and CV, with the corresponding detection limit of both reached 10 −8 M. And linear fitting of the peak intensities was carried out, with the R 2 coefficient of 0.981 and 0.951, respectively. Finally, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of this Mo1-xWxS2@Ag2S nanosheets was obtained to be 8.56 % by test 1 × 10 −4 M R6G at the characteristic peak 613 cm −1 , which represents excellent detection repeatability. The Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets are rich in edge-active sites favorable for charge transfer, which can enhance the SERS signals of the target molecules better. Besides, the Raman detection of the surface of Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets using nitrofurantoin (NFT) also reached a detection limit of 10 −8 M. Mo 1− x W x S 2 @Ag 2 S nanosheets substrates can find applications in medicine and provide new strategies for improving the SERS performance.

This study reported a sandwich SERS structure in detecting SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (SARS-CoV-2 S protein) with high performance. The periodic Ag nanoarrays (AgNAs) functionalized with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) were utilized as the bottom structure to specifically bound to the SARS-CoV-2 S protein. A complex of SARS-CoV-2 S protein antibody and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-Mba) modified Au nanoparticles (AuNPs@4-Mba@Antibody) were used as nanotags and top SERS enhancing structures. By utilized the “hot spots” in parallel and perpendicular directions, the SERS signals of the 4-Mba as reporters were largely enhanced. By modulated the diameters and the heights of the AgNAs, the SERS performance of the sandwich structures was optimized by using R6G as a stand analyst with limits of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10 −9 M. By applied the optimized sandwich structures in detecting SARS-CoV-2 S protein in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and pharyngeal swabs solution (PSS), the proposed sandwich structure illustrates a high performance, and the LODs were 0.1 fg mL −1 and 1 fg mL −1 , respectively. This study presented an efficient way to construct a sandwich SERS structure in directly detecting SARS-CoV-2 S protein and this method illustrates a good potential in viral detection.

The fabrication of sensitive and homogeneous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is the key to its practical application. In this paper, flower-like silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were successfully synthesized in water/ethanol/n-octanol emulsions by an assistant of citric acid and sodium citrate. The size and surface roughness of flower-like Ag NPs can be adjusted by changing the experimental parameters, such as the ratio of citric acid to sodium citrate, and the concentration of ascorbic acid. The resulting flower-like Ag NPs were constructed to form a homogeneous single-layer film by a three-phase interfacial self-assembly method. The performance of the film as SERS substrate was investigated using Rhodamine 6G as a probe molecule, and the enhancement factor was as high as 2.7 × 10 7 . In addition, the SERS substrate exhibits excellent repeatability, with a relative standard deviation of 6.5% for point-to-point Raman intensity changes. The current research will provide a new strategy for SERS sensors in food, environment, and medical applications.
