Fe₇₈Si₉B₁₃ maintained stable NOR degradation during ten reuse cycles. • Surface chemical evolution of Fe₇₈Si₉B₁₃ was revealed after catalytic cycling. • Thirty transformation products enabled the proposal of five pH-dependent NOR pathways. • QSAR predicted pathway-dependent ecological risks of NOR transformation products. Fe₇₈Si₉B₁₃ amorphous alloy was employed as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation, with emphasis on pH-dependent transformation behavior and ecological implications of generated intermediates beyond parent-compound removal. The Fe₇₈Si₉B₁₃/H₂O₂ system achieved rapid NOR degradation, with complete removal within minutes under acidic conditions, and maintained catalytic activity during ten consecutive cycles. Structural and surface analyses demonstrated that the amorphous framework remained stable during repeated reactions, accompanied by surface oxidation and chemical-state changes. The transformation of B species from B B to B O during cycling suggested a possible contribution of B evolution to maintaining catalytic performance. High-resolution mass spectrometry identified 30 transformation products and revealed five NOR transformation pathways under acidic and weakly acidic conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that pH-dependent protonation states altered the electronic distribution and radical-reactive regions of NOR, providing molecular-level insights into pathway variations. Under acidic conditions, transformation products were mainly associated with pathways I–III, whereas weakly acidic conditions were mainly associated with pathways IV and V, leading to distinct transformation profiles and QSAR-predicted ecotoxicity characteristics. These findings highlight that the environmental performance of Fenton-like oxidation processes should be evaluated by integrating degradation efficiency, transformation behavior, and ecological risks of generated intermediates. The poor magnetic and magneto-optical properties of BiFeO3, along with its significant lattice mismatch with silicon, have limited its application in silicon-based integrated magneto-optical devices. In this study, co-doping with Sr2+and Ti4+ions effectively transformed the trigonal structure of BiFeO3into a cubic phase, thereby reducing the lattice mismatch with silicon to 2.8%. High-quality, highly oriented, silicon-based cubic Sr,Ti:BiFeO3thin films were successfully fabricated using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Due to the induced lattice distortion, the characteristic periodic spiral spin antiferromagnetic structure of BiFeO3was suppressed, resulting in a significant enhancement of the saturation magnetization of cubic Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Ti0.5O3(48.0 emu/cm3), compared to that of pristine BiFeO3(5.0 emu/cm3). Furthermore, the incorporation of Sr2+and Ti4+ions eliminated the birefringence effect inherent in trigonal BiFeO3, thereby inducing a pronounced magneto-optical effect in the cubic Sr,Ti:BiFeO3thin film. The magnetic circular dichroic ellipticity (ψF) of Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Ti0.5O3reached an impressive 2300 degrees/cm.

With high lithium storage performance and low intercalation/deintercalation potentials, silicon-based anode is one of the most promising anode materials for the development of high-energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Despite the considerable advances made by Si/C negative electrodes in the commercial field, there remains scope for enhancement in terms of their low-temperature performance. In this work, we put forward a novel additive, which is tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)silane (TTS). Theoretical calculations and differential capacity curves demonstrated that the additive is able to preferentially carbonate solvents for decomposition and that the chemical bonds formed by the breakage facilitated the formation of surface films. The incorporation of O-Si-C-rich structures into solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film allows for the attainment of better mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity. The particular SEI is capable of tolerating significant alterations in the volume of Si/C anode particles, thereby preventing the irreversible depletion of lithium ions and electrolytes. Thus, the Si/C half-cell with TTS additive exhibits higher reversible capacity (582.1 mAh g -1 at room temperature, 212.3 mAh g -1 at -20°C), high-rate performance (440.3 mAh g -1 at 2 C), and excellent capacity retention (76.2% after 150 cycles at room temperature, 77.9% after 200 cycles at -20°C). Furthermore, our research explores the impact of TTS on the formation of amorphous silicon. On the one hand, the formed SEI containing O-Si-C structure has better mechanical properties and ionic conductivity, which inhibit the fragmentation of Si/C particles and reduce the irreversible consumption of Li + . On the other hand, an increase in Li + concentration can increase the amorphous silicon content in the lithiation process. Specifically, the introduction of TTS promotes the formation of the amorphous silicon (a-Si) phase, and the content of the a-Si phase is closely related to the reversible capacity and cycling stability of the silicon anode. The unique phase-regulation mechanism is the key to the ability of TTS modification to enhance the low-temperature electrochemical performance of Si/C anode. This work provides an effective method for the development of materials suitable for operation at low-temperature.

A novel Cu@SZN-2Si catalyst with both microporous and mesoporous structures was successfully fabricated using a new template agent (BCph-10-6-6). This catalyst showed outstanding catalytic performance in the selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of triethylamine (TEA). Notably, in contrast to the conventional mesoporous Cu@SZ-2Si_CTAB synthesised with CTAB, Cu@SZN-2Si presented a flower-like nanosheet morphology. It boasted a higher density of Lewis acid sites and more surface-adsorbed oxygen (O ads ). Under the reaction conditions at 280 °C, the TEA conversion reached 100 %, and the N 2 yield was as high as 99.2 %. Moreover, in the presence of 10.0 vol% H 2 O vapour, the catalytic activity of Cu@SZN-2Si remained above 87.3 % at 280 °C and maintained stable operation for 130 h at 400 °C. Structural analysis coupled with DFT calculations revealed that Si incorporation enabled the crystallization of tetragonal ZrO 2 in the presence of SO 4 2− ions, while forming an amorphous SiO 2 that encapsulated the ZrO 2 surface. This structural characteristic significantly increased the number of isolated Cu 2+ species and acidic sites on the catalyst surface. The strong interaction between these isolated Cu 2+ species and acidic sites was crucial for promoting the adsorption and activation of TEA. In addition, in-situ DRIFTs results indicated that TEA first adsorbed on the Cu@SZN-2Si surface, followed by a thermal decomposition process. The cleavage of the C-N bond in TEA generated NH* intermediates, which were essential for N 2 generation and promoted the SCO of TEA.

Al-7Si-0.8Sc-0.6Ce alloys were prepared with combined addition of low-cost Ce and high-priced Sc through molten salt electrolysis with controlled cooling process. The phases of as-casted alloys consisted of α-Al, eutectic silicon , ternary AlSi 2 Sc 2 and CeAl 2 Si 2 . Rapid cooling transformed the huge hollow ternary AlSi 2 Sc 2 blocks (300–500 µm) into fine Al 3 Sc particles (dozens of μm), and simultaneously refined the AlSi 2 Sc 2 with reducing its interlayer thickness from 15.26 µm down to 1.94 µm (the cooling rate from 0.05 K s −1 up to 30 K s −1 ). The eutectic Si became fine fibrous-like clusters and the thickness of CeAl 2 Si 2 phase reduced by 62.6 % when the cooling rate reached 30 K s −1 . Micro-hardness measurement and first principles-based calculation were applied for evaluating the individual mechanical performance of each phase in the alloy. The calculated Young’s modulus (E) suggests that Al 3 Sc (E = 168 GPa), AlSi 2 Sc 2 (E = 178 GPa) and CeAl 2 Si 2 (E = 39.2 GPa) can toughen Al-matrix (E = 30.6 GPa). The rapid cooling (30 K s −1 ) strongly enhances all phase components but diminish the huge hollow AlSi 2 Sc 2 blocks (ultrahigh micro-Vickers hardness ∼ 780 HV), making a homogenous Al-RE alloy with improved mechanical property (68 ∼ 84 HV balanced among phase components). The refining mechanisms on the improved mechanical performance are also discussed.

Silicon, with its natural abundance and high gravimetric capacity, holds tremendous potential for practical Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the major issue related to silicon is its huge volume change during the charge/discharge processes, leading to structural degradation and instability. We report herein reed plants-derived interconnected hollow Si/C hybrids fabricated by using CO2 (carbon source) in traditional magnesiothermic reduction. Both the CO2 amount and HCl concentration for the extraction of SiO2 play a significant role on the architecture design and rational composition of the Si/C hybrids during this new synthetic system. Significantly, the Si/C composites with 21 wt % carbon content as anodes for LIBs display a large reversible specific capacity of 1548 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1 and a superior specific capacity of 650 mAh g–1 at 500 mA g–1 for 200 cycles and of 1025 mAh g–1 at 2000 mA g–1. The outstanding rate property and good cycling performance are ascribed to cooperativity of morphologies and structures of the Si/C composites, possessing a large pore volume and specific area, unique interconnected hollow structure, and high electrical conductivity. Additionally, such biomass-derived Si/C hybrid synthetic route with low cost and large-scale production merits probably accelerates the commercialized application of Si-based anodes for LIBs.

We studied the effects of particle size of raw materials (B 4 C, TiC and Si powders) on the characteristics of both TiB 2 –SiC composite powders and ceramics. Results show that the size of B 4 C and Si particles hardly affects the size of TiB 2 and SiC particles because B 4 C is decomposed and consumed during the formation of TiB 2 , and Si is melted during the formation of SiC. The size of SiC particles is within the nano and submicron scale. However, the size of TiC particles determines the sizes of TiB 2 particles and TiB 2 grains in the composite ceramics because TiC particles serve as templates to form TiB 2 particles. Consequently, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the TiB 2 –SiC composite ceramics are affected. The TiB 2 –SiC composites fabricated using nano-sized TiC powder possess smaller grain size, better dispersibility and more reasonable crack propagation path, thereby obtaining the optimal mechanical properties (Vickers hardness of 30.2 GPa, flexural strength of 732 MPa and fracture toughness of 7.37 MPa m 1/2 ).

Existing methods toward the preparation of perovskite deposited on textured silicon surfaces are technically complicated for perovskite/Si monolithic tandem solar cells (TSCs). Herein, a handy solvent engineering approach of introducing starch additive in MAPbI 3 -based one-step spin coating at room temperature is reported. The effect of different starch contents in perovskite precursor solution on morphological, structural, optical, and photovoltaic properties of the perovskite films is investigated. The starch enhances the solution viscosity and establishes hydrogen bonds with CH 3 NH 3 + , leading to the formation of almost same perovskite crystal structure films suitable for textured silicon surfaces. The perovskite film with a starch concentration of 5 wt% realizes full coverage on the textured silicon surface with an average thickness around 600 nm. Both the perovskite film and corresponding plane solar cell exhibit stable crystal structure and device performance due to the starch molecules located at the perovskite grain boundaries to lock the water molecules. The potential of pairing the yielded quasiconformal nanoscale coverage of perovskite layers with textured silicon surfaces is evaluated, and the uniform light absorption in perovskite layers and good match of the current density in perovskite/Si monolithic TSCs, with the best-calculated cell efficiency exceeding 29%, are demonstrated.

Ceramic fibrous aerogels are promising lightweight thermal insulators, yet concurrently enhancing mechanical robustness, acoustic attenuation and electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption remains challenging because these functions demand conflicting architectures. Here we introduce a phase-transition-driven multiphase evolution strategy in Si Zr crystals combined with a one-step thermally induced core–shell conversion. This approach enables coordinated regulation of the chemical states, dislocation density and oxygen-vacancy concentration in Zr Si ceramic fibers, and forms a heterogeneous “oxide shell (ZrO 2 /SiO 2 )-carbide core (SiC/ZrC)” within each fiber. The resulting interfacial enrichment and improved impedance matching synergistically strengthen the aerogel and boost EM dissipation. The obtained ZSCO fibrous aerogels deliver a compressive stress up to 255.73 kPa, a minimum reflection loss of −21.87 dB and an average sound absorption coefficient of 0.61. Mechanistic analysis reveals a thermally driven, multimodal regulation pathway for tailoring multifunctional ceramic fibers, offering a scalable route to aerogels for extreme environments.

Waste graphitization cathode carbon blocks are a type of hazardous solid waste generated during the aluminum electrolysis process, and their proper disposal is a key step in the resource utilization of discarded graphite. This study utilizes the porous “defect advantage” of a cathode carbon block matrix to prepare silicon-doped and asphalt-coated detoxified and purified waste graphitization cathode carbon blocks for use as high-performance silicon/carbon composite anode materials. The results show that the uniformly silicon-doped silicon/carbon composite material features a unique amorphous carbon-encapsulated “locked silicon” structure, which effectively addresses issues such as cathode volume expansion, excessive growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, and poor electrical contact between active materials. Consequently, electrochemical performance is enhanced. After assembly in a half-cell, the PSCC/10%Si@C (purified waste graphitization cathode carbon/10%Si@C) material exhibits optimal electrochemical stability, with an initial charging specific capacity of 514.5 mAh/g at 0.1 C (1 C = 170 mA/g) and a capacity retention rate of 95.1% after 100 cycles. At a charge rate of 2.0 C, a specific capacity of 216.9 mAh/g is achieved. This technology provides a new pathway for the economical and high-value utilization of waste cathode carbon blocks and the development of low-cost, high-performance anode materials.

Si possesses a high theoretical specific capacity as anode material for Li-ion batteries. However, it has poor electrical conductivity and severe volume effect during charge-discharge processes, resulting in substantial internal resistance and significantly reduced available capacity. These issues can be greatly mitigated by encapsulating Si nanoparticles within a carbonous material. Hence, network precursors are synthesised herein to encapsulate Si nanoparticles by in situ polymerisation of acrylic acid and melamine. After freeze-drying, the precursors are pyrolysed under Ar atmosphere to obtain homogeneous N-rich porous Si@SiO x /NC composites. A fibrous network structure is acquired by using appropriate amounts of polyacrylic acid and Si. Such a structure provides an outstanding electron transmission network and effectively buffers the volume change of Si to maintain a stable electrode structure. The results show that when the content of Si nanoparticles in the composite is 35.2 wt%, the prepared Si@SiO x /NC−2 composite has abundant micropores (267.90 m 2 g −1 ) and mesopores (17.48 m 2 g −1 ). The material shows an initial discharge-specific capacity of 1833.6 mAh g −1 and Coulombic efficiency of 65%. After 150 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , the discharge-specific capacity is still as high as 922.8 mAh g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance of the Si@SiO x /NC composites is due to the three-dimensional conductive structure. The unique construction could play an important role in expanding the commercial application of Si-based anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

High temperature thermally stable fiber materials with flexibility are expected to be applicable to severe conditions. In this article, ZrO 2 /Si–C–O ceramic fibers have been synthesized by the sol-gel process combined with the electrospinning technique. We focus on the changes of composition, structure and morphology with the increasing heat treatment temperature. More importantly, the effects of ZrO 2 crystalline phase transformation on mechanical property of ZrO 2 /Si–C–O ceramic fibers have been investigated. The results show that the increased temperature can lead to an increase of the fiber diameter and grain size, as well as the transformation of ZrO 2 phase. It is also found that the ZrO 2 /Si–C–O ceramic fibers possess refined crystalline grain and improved mechanical properties at a heat treatment temperature of 800 °C, which is mainly due to the fact that the amorphous Si–C–O phase containing free carbon facilitates the refinement of the crystalline grain, and the ZrO 2 in the tetragonal structure improves the flexibility of ceramic fibers. Furthermore, the obtained fibers exhibit excellent thermal stability up to 1300 °C, therefore they have broad application prospect in high temperature environment.
