The development of 1-deoxy-d-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase (DXPS) inhibitors still needs an innovative extension with novel chemotypes to avoid herbicide resistance. Herein, a series of 2,4-diphenylquinoline derivatives were designed, synthesized, and structurally optimized from lead compound 24 via stepwise A/B/C-ring modification. Greenhouse assays identified a-3 (3-CF3 A-ring) as the most potent analogue, exhibiting the higher herbicidal activity (71.4% inhibition on DESSO at 375 g a.i./ha) and dosage tolerance than 24. The mechanism of compound a-3 targeting DXPS proteins has been also identified using surface plasmon resonance binding assay, physiological biomarker measurement, substrate accumulation, and molecular docking. The key active motifs between a-3 and DXPS have been further defined based on the structure–activity relationships. This work will further expand the structural diversity of DXPS inhibitors with higher bioactivity.

To address the insufficient activity, low noble metal utilization efficiency, and poor stability of transition metal-based catalysts in alkaline media, a PtFeCoNiMnMo high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanocatalyst with synergistic multi-d orbital hybridization was synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method using glucose as a dispersant and an auxiliary reducing agent. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, TEM, XPS, and ICP-OES) confirmed its single face-centered cubic structure with lattice distortion (δ = 3.29%), homogeneous elemental distribution, and directional electron transfer-induced strong electronic interactions. Electrochemical tests in 1 M KOH showed exceptional alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance: 21 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, 47.06 mV dec−1 Tafel slope, 2.455 s−1 TOF, and minimal charge-transfer resistance (5.39 Ω), outperforming control samples and commercial Pt/C. The catalyst exhibited outstanding stability with only 2.1% current decay after 50 h. Mechanistic studies indicated that the multi-d orbital electronic interactions in the alloy can regulate the adsorption capacities of H and OH species, thereby enhancing its alkaline HER catalytic activity.

A sequential two-stage chemo-biocatalytic process was investigated for the conversion ofD-xylose to furfuryl alcohol (FOL), an important furan derivative widely used in the manufacture of resins, polymers, fuels, and other value-added products. In the first stage,D-xylose was dehydrated to furfural (FAL) in a ternary Betaine:Formic acid:Malonic acid–water (Bet:FA:MA–H2O) reaction medium. Under the selected conditions, a FAL yield of 65.8% was obtained from 22.5 g/LD-xylose using 15 wt% Bet:FA:MA at 170 °C for 30 min. For the subsequent bioreduction stage, a recombinantEscherichia colistrain co-expressing the aldehyde reductase EutG and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) was constructed. Using glucose as a co-substrate, EutG–GDH whole cells were able to reduce commercial FAL at concentrations up to 150 mM under the selected conditions of 40 °C and pH 7.5. For the sequential process using theD-xylose-derived dehydration liquor, the acidic reaction mixture was adjusted to pH 7.5 and diluted from 98.7 to 30.0 mM FAL before whole-cell bioreduction. The conditioned 30.0 mM FAL feed was essentially completely converted to FOL within 24 h. These results demonstrate the laboratory-scale feasibility of sequentially combining Bet:FA:MA–H2O-mediatedD-xylose dehydration with EutG–GDH whole-cell FAL reduction after interstage pH adjustment and dilution.

Multi-enzyme cascade valorizes starch-rich TCHRs into 5KGA; • NADP + regeneration built via Ga5DH-SBFA-CAT coupling; • Reverse activity suppressed, enabling efficient GA-to-5KGA conversion; • Fed-batch production of 5KGA reached 203 g/L with TTN of 9.5 × 10 4 . Herbal residues (HRs) are emerging as an important and sustainable biomass resource, driven by the diversification of global health concepts and the rapid growth in related consumption. Herein, we established a valorization route from starch-rich traditional Chinese herb residues (TCHRs) to high-value 5‑keto‑D‑gluconic acid (5KGA) via a multi-enzymatic cascade. Starch-rich TCHRs were first converted to gluconic acid (GA) through enzymatic hydrolysis and oxidation (>80% conversion). Subsequently, an oxidized cofactor regeneration system was established to efficiently convert GA into 5KGA by coupling gluconate-5-dehydrogenase (Ga5DH) with a synthetic bridged-flavin analogue (SBFA), thereby mitigating constraints arising from Ga5DH’s high reductive activity. This system catalyzed the irreversible dehydrogenation of GA to 5KGA, achieving complete conversion of 100 mM GA within 4 h (total turnover number, TTN = 1.0 × 10 4 ). Furthermore, upon scaling up in a 1-L bioreactor with continuous operation for 48 h, 203.3 g/L (950 mM) of 5KGA was produced with a TTN of 9.5 × 10 4 . This value-upgrading strategy provides an efficient and economically viable biotransformation pathway for starch-based non-edible biomass feedstocks. Conventional polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes suffer from insufficient mono−/divalent anion selectivity and poor chlorine resistance, limiting their water treatment applications. Herein, a polyester–amide (PEA) NF membrane was fabricated via interfacial polymerization using piperazine and hydroxyl-rich D-mannitol as aqueous comonomers. Compared with the traditional PA membrane, the optimal PEA membrane exhibited higher surface roughness, greater thickness, looser structure, stronger hydrophilicity, and higher electronegativity. Specifically, the optimal PEA membrane delivered a water permeability of 21.9 L⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 ⋅bar −1 and an outstanding NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 selectivity of 68.4. This optimal PEA membrane maintained stable performance under chlorination across a wide pH range and showed excellent alkali stability after 20 h in NaOH solution at pH = 12.0. Furthermore, the optimal PEA membrane exhibited better antifouling properties with smaller decline in flux and greater flux recovery. Additionally, stable flux and rejection were observed for the optimal PEA membrane over 28 days of continuous cross-flow filtration. This work offers a facile strategy to develop high-performance PEA NF membranes with increased anion selectivity and chlorine resistance.

Stereocomplex-type polylactide (SC-PLA) composed of alternatingly packed enantiomeric chains has recently been regarded as a promising engineering bioplastic with favorable physical properties. However, it is challenging to realize its commercial applications since homocrystallization is fiercely competed with the SC crystallization in the melt-processing of enantiomeric poly( l -lactide) (PLLA) and poly( d -lactide) (PDLA) blends holding relatively high molecular weights (>100 kg/mol). Herein, a facile yet efficient strategy is proposed to facilitate the SC crystallization by using zinc acetate (Zn(OAc) 2 ) to strengthen intermolecular interactions. It is impressive to find that the addition of only 0.01 wt% Zn(OAc) 2 induces the selective formation of SC crystals (SCs) without any homocrystals (HCs), under various melt-crystallization conditions, exhibiting an extremely high efficiency in enhancing SC crystallizability. Moreover, the crystallization kinetic is significantly enhanced. Such enhancement could be ascribed to the metal-oxygen coordination between Zn 2+ ions from Zn(OAc) 2 and carbonyl group of PLAs, which favors the interactive collaboration between enantiomeric chains and thus lowers the barrier to the formation of SCs. This work provides valuable guidance for developing advanced SC-PLA materials with desirable crystallizability.

Developing low-cost, high-performance Ru-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is crucial for advancing anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) technology. In this study, based on the Sabatier principle, a Ru/CoMoO 4 heterojunction catalyst with a ternary “nanorod-macroparticle-microparticle” structure is designed. Benefiting from the strong electronic interactions, a lower d-band center of Ru/CoMoO 4 is observed, resulting in optimal adsorption between Ru species and the key H* intermediates to greatly enhance the hydrogen desorption kinetics. Importantly, this interface engineering effect prevents the Volmer-Tafel step from becoming rate-limiting step, thereby promoting electron and mass transport. As a consequence, Ru/CoMoO 4 outperforms most of the reported HER catalysts at an ultra-low Ru loading of only 0.2 wt%. In alkaline media, it only requires an overpotential of 55 mV to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , with a low Tafel slope of 16 mV dec -1 , and operates stably for over 230 h at an industrial-grade current density of 1000 mA cm -2 . The AEMWE electrolyzer based on the Ru/CoMoO 4 catalyst achieves efficient and stable hydrogen production at 1000 mA cm⁻ 2 @ 1.93 V. This work not only provides a high-performance catalyst, but also elucidates a strategy for precisely controlling d-band center through heterojunction interface engineering to optimize reaction [email protected]

Enzyme–inorganic hybrid nanoflowers (HNFs) are promising immobilization platforms because of their simple fabrication and often enhanced catalytic performance. Here, a robust and highly efficient hybrid nanoflower (β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI) for d -tagatose biosynthesis was developed using co-immobilizing β-galactosidase (β-Gal) and l -arabinose isomerase (LFAI) by ST/SC–mediated self-assembly and biomineralization. First, the effects of key immobilization conditions on the fabrication of β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI were investigated. Under optimal conditions, β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI exhibited higher catalytic activity and activity recovery than a conventional β-Gal@LFAI. Compared with the free enzyme system, β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI showed enhanced thermal stability, pH tolerance and organic solvent resistance. The structure of β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI was further characterized by SEM, CLSM, DLS, FTIR, CD and BET technology. The resulting HNFs displayed a typical flower-like architecture with an average diameter of 1.83 μm and specific surface area of 18.57 m 2 ·g −1 . CD spectroscopy showed a decrease in α-helix content and an increase in β-sheet content in β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI compared to the free cascade enzymes. In addition, β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI exhibited a lower K m than the free cascade enzymes, indicating enhanced substrate affinity. The HNFs also demonstrated better storage stability than the free enzymes and excellent operational stability, retaining more than 77.99% of their cascade catalytic activity after seven reuse cycles. Finally, β-Gal-SC@ST-LFAI can catalyze the conversion of d -lactose to d -tagatose with a yield of 37.22%. This study provides a practical strategy for constructing multienzyme HNFs with high catalytic efficiency and process robustness.

Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) often metastasizes to the liver, which complicates treatment strategies. This study evaluates MSN–TK@SA, a mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) loaded with saikosaponin D (SA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS)–cleaving thioketal (TK), as a targeted approach for CRC metastasis. Methods MSN–TK@SA nanoparticles were formulated by loading SA onto MSN to create MSN@SA, followed by coating with ROS-responsive methoxy polyethylene glycol-thioketal-N-hydroxysuccinimide (mPEG-TK-NHS) to produce MSN–TK@SA. The nanoparticles were characterized using different analytical techniques, and drug release profiles were evaluated. CRC cells and a liver metastasis model of CRC with liver qi stagnation were treated with the nanoparticles, and various techniques were used to assess the effects of MSN–TK@SA on tumorigenicity, immune response, and liver metastasis. Results The MSN, MSN@SA, and MSN–TK@SA nanoparticles were spherical, monodispersed, and colloidally stable, with a progressive decrease in zeta potential, which demonstrated successful loading with SA and thioketal coating. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the silanol, amine, and PEG-TK functionalization. MSN–TK@SA had high encapsulation (81%) and loading efficiency (29%), which was consistent with pore entrapment stabilized by hydrogen bonding and dipole interactions. Drug release was based on a sustained/controlled profile, and approximately 80% of the drug was released within 72 h without a burst effect. First-order and Weibull models best described the concentration-dependent, diffusion-controlled release with anomalous transport of the nanoparticles. In vitro, MSN–TK@SA exhibited significant anticancer activity, including decreased viability, invasion, and migration, and amplified apoptosis of CRC cells. MSN–TK@SA markedly reduced tumor burden and metastasis, enhanced antitumor immunity, and inhibited inflammation in a CRC liver metastasis model. Conclusion MSN–TK@SA nanoparticles enable effective drug loading, controlled release, and immune activation, significantly inhibiting CRC liver metastasis. They are a promising platform for drug delivery and immunotherapy, deserving further preclinical and translational research.

Wood, as a widely available renewable resource, was extensively used in many fields. Utilizing its abundant hydroxyl groups of surface and unique hierarchical pore structure, N -methyl-D-glucosamine (NMDG), a functional monomer with unique chelation properties towards boric acid/borate, was grafted onto its surface after modification, successfully preparing the NMDG-modified wood-based functional material (Wood-NMDG). When this material was applied for boron adsorption in aqueous, research found that both solution pH and boron concentration significantly affected its adsorption performance. Studies on its adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics revealed that the material possessed excellent adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption kinetics. After adsorption with salt lake brine, it demonstrated outstanding specificity and selectivity. Dynamic adsorption studies using simulated seawater yielded a breakthrough time of 42 hours. Based on the World Health Organization standard for boron concentration in drinking water, its capacity for treating seawater into drinking water reached 2520 L·kg –1 . However, cycling experiments indicated a certain degree of decrease in the adsorption properties of the material. Nevertheless, considering the abundant availability, low cost, and ease of modification of wood as a raw material, Wood-NMDG held broad application prospects as an efficient removal agent for seawater desalination, drinking water production and irrigation water treatment.

The Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) has been widely used in environmental monitoring and disease diagnosis due to its advantages of low cost, simple operation, and convenience. However, its accuracy and sensitivity remain major challenges to be addressed. D-dimer is an important biomarker for thrombotic diseases. In this work, we show for the first time a core–shell Au@Ag nanoparticle (NP) labeled colorimetrically enhanced LFIA for D-dimer detection. The superior performance of Au@Ag LFIA stems from the silver shell's enhancement of plasmon resonance, which boosts optical signals to yield brighter scattering and superior visual contrast. Compared with conventional AuNPs, Au@AgNPs significantly improve sensitivity, leading to more accurate results. The detection limit for D-dimer was improved by approximately tenfold, reaching 1 ng/mL, due to the improved cross-coupling efficiency of Au@AgNPs compared with AuNPs. We anticipate that, with further development and validation, this enhanced LFIA could become a valuable tool in a wide range of clinical diagnostic applications.

Understanding the intrinsic features of dehydrogenation reactions of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) is a formidable challenge due to the combined impact of electronic and geometric effects. Herein, we constructed a series of Pt/MO x catalysts (CeO 2 , MgO, ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , or SiO 2 ) with similar sizes of Pt (∼1.7 nm) to investigate the effects of Pt electron structures (tuned by electronic metal‒support interactions) on the catalytic dehydrogenation of LOHCs. The results revealed a volcano-shaped correlation between Pt d electrons on different supports and the turnover frequency of catalytic dehydrogenation. Importantly, the Pt/MgO catalyst exhibited the highest dehydrogenation activity. With decreasing d electron content, Pt/MgO increases the bonding orbital dominance of Pt‒C bonds and leads to stable adsorption of H6-monobenzyltoluene (MBT), which facilitates subsequent C‒H bond scission. This study offers insight for the strategic development of high-efficiency dehydrogenation catalysts via d electron density modulation of Pt sites.
