Here, thin Ag films with excellent properties were successfully prepared on flexible substrates through surface grafting and assembling followed by simple spray-assisted deposition process. The constructed molecule brushes provide the interfacial adhesion for Ag layers onto polymer substrates. The mechanical and electrical properties of the conductive Ag coated PET could be tuned by changing the spraying passes. As the electromagnetic interference shielding material, the composite PET possesses a highest shielding efficiency of 45 dB. In addition, the Ag coated PET with the thickness of 0.1 mm would maintain the 72% electrical conductivity even been folded even at a minimum diameter of 0.2 mm. It was demonstrated that uniform and fine cracks would generate when the Ag coated PET was stretching, but Ag films still retain continuous networks to maintain the high electronic conductivity even stretching to 100%. Simple finite element modeling results prove that the stress by stretching would concentrate in corner of the crack and the deformation is mainly at stress side. The Ag layers were also produced on TPU substrates to detect the stretching, showing its potential applications for strain sensors and health monitoring systems.

A convenient and easy-scalable synthetic strategy to achieve ultrasensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates for single particle detection of targeting molecules is reported. Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microspheres with variable sizes were synthesized and decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through an in-situ chemical deposition to obtain composite MF@Ag-NPs microspheres. Individual MF@Ag-NPs microspheres were screened under a microscope and used to examine their single particle SERS properties by using four different probe molecules. The experimental results demonstrated that as-prepared SERS substrates displayed a dramatically enhanced SERS activity and sensitivity as well as an extraordinary stability and reproducibility of the SERS signal. Moreover, we also showed a first example of single MF@Ag-NPs microsphere for quantitative trace detection of uric acid (UA) as biomarker based on the label-free strategy, making them a promising candidate as an ideal substrate for applications in fields of biosensor, trace analysis and biomedical diagnostics.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanomaterials have been recognized as a competitive candidate for optoelectronic applications. However, the lead toxicity and intrinsic instability have limited their commercialization. Herein, a facile room-temperature approach is developed for the synthesis of an environmentally friendly all-inorganic orange-red-emitting Ag-doped and Mn-doped lead-free halide double perovskite Cs2NaBiCl6 (CNBC) in the shape of an octahedron. Only very weak orange-red photoluminescence (PL) is observed in the undoped CNBC octahedrons. However, both Ag and Mn doping heavily enhance the PL intensity of the CNBC samples. The stability of the representative Ag-doped and Mn-doped CNBC is studied under various conditions such as an ambient environment, high temperatures up to 400 °C, and UV irradiation. The alcohol-based photocatalytic performances of the samples are investigated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) in ethanol, demonstrating a strong and stable photodegradation activity. This work will offer a facile and cost-effective protocol in doped lead-free double perovskites as a stable and environmentally friendly alternative for environmental photocatalysts.

Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) is one of the most ubiquitous foodborne pathogens that can cause infections and threaten human health. Herein, a colorimetric method for sensitive detection of E. coli was established by using enzyme-nanozyme cascade reaction for signal amplification. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are well-known nanozymes due to their high peroxidase-like activity. When the dense cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) membrane on the surfaces of AuNPs kept the substrate away from AuNPs, the peroxidase activity of AuNPs was inhibited. However, the CTAB membrane could be disrupted by Ag + , resulting in enhanced peroxidase activity of AuNPs. When E. coli was present, the enzyme-nanozyme cascade reaction was initiated. The substrate p-aminophenyl β-D-galactopyranoside (PAPG) was hydrolyzed to the reductive p-aminophenol (PAP) by beta-galactosidase (β-gal) in E. coli , reducing Ag + to Ag. Consequently, CTAB-AuNPs remained weak peroxidase activity and could not catalyze the H 2 O 2 -mediated oxidation of TMB . As the amount of E. coli increased, the absorbance of TMB decreased along with a color change from deep blue to pink. The absorbance intensity displayed a linear dependence on E. coli from 1.0 × 10 2 to 1.0 × 10 9 CFU mL −1 . Therefore, the proposed method holds good prospects in foodborne pathogenic bacteria detection.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. In this study, a new Fe 3+ -carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)-polyacrylamide (PAAm) - Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) interpenetrating hydrogel coating with antibacterial properties on the surfaces of latex urinary catheters was prepared with a simple dipping method. The morphology, chemical composition , surface roughness , and contact angles of the coated urinary catheters were characterized by using SEM, EDS, ATR-FTIR, XPS , AFM , and contact angle instruments, respectively. The antibacterial performance of the coated urinary catheters was characterized by the inhibition zone tests. Furthermore, the toxicity profile of the coated urinary catheters was also evaluated in vitro via MTT assay and hemolysis test. The experimental results showed that the Fe 3+ -CMC-PAAm-AgNPs hydrogel-coated urinary catheters had strong antibacterial effects . The concentration of AgNPs after the release of 30 days was still higher than the effective antibacterial concentration of the total Ag (0.1 ppb) and was lower than the toxic concentration of human cells (10 ppm). The inhibition zone tests of the coated urinary catheter against E. coli (ATCC25922) showed that both the CMC-PAAm-AgNPs hydrogel coatings and the Fe 3+ -CMC-PAAm-AgNPs hydrogel coatings had clear inhibition zones in the culture medium. The addition of Fe 3+ exhibited synergistic antibacterial effects with AgNPs. Moreover, the coatings also showed admirable biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The synergistic antibacterial mechanism was also proposed. The novel Fe 3+ -CMC-PAAm-AgNPs hydrogel coatings for urinary catheters would have great potential in reducing CAUTIs.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has been widely used in various industries, including food production, pollution control, and textile bleaching. Therefore,it is necessary to determine its content for the sake of environmental and food safety. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared using electrospinning followed by calcination under a N 2 atmosphere as a novel electrocatalyst for the sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 . The composition, structure, and morphology of CNFs doped with AgNPs (AgCNFs) were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of AgCNFs towards H 2 O 2 reduction was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. As determined by electrochemical studies, the developed electrochemical sensor displayed a broad dynamic range of 0.01–50 mM and a detection limit of 3 μM ( S/N = 3).

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a common gas that can cause irreversible damage to human health, emphasizing the essentiality of developing highly sensitive NO 2 sensors with good selectivity and low consumption. Here, a facile in–situ cation exchange method was employed to successfully synthesize interlayer expansion Ag intercalated SnS 2 with S vacancies for NO 2 gas sensing. The presence of S vacancies strongly improves the electronic structure of SnS 2 and significantly facilitates the interaction of NO 2 with the sensor. Moreover, the interlayer spacing of SnS 2 is expanded by 0.48 Å after Ag intercalation, prompting diffusion behavior of NO 2 molecules between the interlayers. Benefiting from the factors above, SnS 2 –Ag exhibited excellent gas sensing performance for NO 2 with a high response to 5 ppm NO 2 (response value = 8.37) and detection limits as low as 200 ppb at a low temperature of 100 °C. This work combines defect engineering with interlayer engineering to provide a new perspective for extending the application of SnS 2 gas sensors.

How to improve photon absorption , photoelectric conversion efficiency, and carrier separation and transfer efficiency is a huge challenge for promoting the efficiency of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, the black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) was assembled on the surface of TiO 2 nanorods arrays (TiO 2 NAs) through electrostatic attraction to form TiO 2 /BP heterojunction material. Meanwhile, Ag nanoparticles were successfully loaded on the surface of TiO 2 /BP heterojunction material to form Ag nanoparticles modified TiO 2 /BP heterojunction composite material. The TiO 2 /BP heterojunction modified by Ag nanoparticles nanostructures exhibited a remarkable enhancement in the PEC water splitting in comparison with the pristine TiO 2 . Photoelectrochemical performance at 1.23 V vs. RHE bias-potential under 100 mW cm −2 solar light illumination shows that synthesized Ag–TiO 2 /BP photoanode displaying the highest photocurrent density of 1.74 mA cm −2 , which is practically 3.34 times higher than that of pristine TiO 2 (0.52 mA cm −2 ), presenting a significantly improved PEC performance for water splitting. After 18 months, the photocurrent of synthesized Ag–TiO 2 /BP photoanode can still reach 1.63 mA cm −2 , and the performance is stable. It demonstrated that the formation of heterojunction by electrostatic attraction of TiO 2 and BP and then modification with Ag nanoparticles is an effective strategy for improving the PEC water splitting.

A facile synthetic approach has been developed to prepare uniform and size-tunable spiky Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) to tailor the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. The gradual assembly of small Au nanocrystals allows the size of spiky Au NPs to be modulated from tens to several hundreds of nanometers by tuning the concentration of initial Au seeds and Au source; and the thickness of the Ag shell can be adjusted with stepwise reduction of Ag(I) ions. The LSPR bands of such spiky Au@Ag core-shell NPs resemble those of pure spiky Au NP cores of similar sizes in near-infrared region, and increasing the Ag shell thickness results in a blue shift and broadening of the LSPR band in the near-infrared region. Additionally, the spiky Au@Ag core-shell NPs exhibit improved surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity as compared to the bare spiky Au NPs and spherical Ag@Au NPs. This work has offered a facile route to synthesize plasmonic metal NPs with LSPR band in 650 to 800 nm that show strong enhancement of localized electromagnetic field, which provides an effective SERS substrate for SERS imaging and detection in biological fluids and tissues.

In this work, epoxy foams with high volume expansion ratio and excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) are fabricated by the supercritical carbon dioxide as blowing agent. So far, the volume expansion ratio of about 20 for epoxy foam reported in this work is the highest in literature and reported for the first time, related to the strategy of introducing hyperbranched epoxy and solvent-free covalent nanofluid hybrid material of nanocarbon black as modifier and nucleated agent. Meanwhile, incorporating commercial silver nanosheet (AgNS) into above-foamed system achieves two synergistic effects: one is the significant increase of electrical conductivity and the other is the well controllable cell structure to avoid cell coalescence. In turn, the uniform cell distribution of epoxy foams is favorable for the formation of more efficient conductive networks related to the biaxial stretching on rearrangement in the cell wall and inter-connection of AgNS. Multi-properties including electrical conductivity of 89.12 S/m, specific EMI SE (SSE) of 334.59 dB·cm 3 /g and thermal conductivity of 58.71 mW/m·K are achieved in the epoxy composite foam with 20.0 wt% AgNS. The EMI mechanism is dominated by absorption rather than reflection due to electromagnetic waves attenuated by AgNSs in cell walls after the waves reflecting several times in cells. This work provides SCCO 2 foaming strategy as a feasible path to generate epoxy conductive polymer composite (CPC) foam with lighting weight, low thermal conductivity, outstanding electrical conductivity, excellent EMI SE and accessible mechanical strength.

To improve the visible-light photocatalytic performance of TiO 2 for practical application, Ag/AgBr modified TiO 2 was fabricated in ionic liquid–water medium via a facile hydrothermal-reduction method. The visible-light catalytic activity of as-prepared Ag/AgBr/TiO 2 was measured using tetracycline (TC) as the target pollutant. Characterizations by various techniques (SEM–EDS, XRD, XPS and DRS) and the quenching experiments with scavengers for possible active species (h + , • O 2 − and ·OH) were executed to probe the mechanism underlying the photocatalytic performance. Critical impacts from the catalyst and solution chemistry were evaluated in the mediums of TC solution, simulated wastewater and real wastewater sample. The results suggested that: (1) benefitting from the visible-light sensitive Ag/AgBr and high specific surface area TiO 2 , Ag/AgBr/TiO 2 exhibits fair stability and remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activity; (2) under optimized conditions, Ag/AgBr/TiO 2 provides higher visible-light catalytic activity than Ag/AgBr and TiO 2 ; (3) the coexisting inorganic ions with high concentration in the simulated wastewater sample depress TC photo-degradation, and the impacts varies with the species of inorganic ions; (4) COD removal rate about 65.5% in real wastewater sample proves that Ag/AgBr/TiO 2 can mineralize TC promptly and almost completely.

Synthesis of silver/zinc oxide heterostructured nanorods (Ag/ZnO HNRs) is demonstrated via a simple one-step solvothermal method. The size of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) are tuned by controlling the amount of AgNO 3 and the optimized decoration of AgNPs significantly enhance the utilization of visible light. Particularly, the Ag/ZnO HNRs samples are used to examine the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and reduction of potassium dichromate (K 2 Cr 2 O 7 ). The obtained results display that the Ag/ZnO HNRs possess surprising photocatalytic activities towards the removal of MO and reduction of K 2 Cr 2 O 7 . Further, the photocatalytic activities are related with the size of AgNPs and the length of ZnO NRs. Finally, the investigation towards the degradation of other dye molecules such as rhodamine B (RhB), and methyl blue (MB) along with MO at higher concentrations from morning to evening upon exposing sunlight under static condition. The present work could provide a further insight into the synthesis of ZnO based heterostructured photocatalysts and their application in efficient water treatment under natural conditions.
