Photo-Fenton membranes exhibit exceptional self-cleaning and anti-fouling performances, making them promising for oil/water separation applications. However, the practical use of photo-Fenton catalytic reaction is limited as it requires an acidic environment. In this study, a polyethersulfone (PES)/Fe 3 S 4 @Al 2 O 3 membrane was fabricated using nonsolvent-induced phase separation. This resulted in a photo-Fenton separation membrane with a broad pH range applicability, leveraging the high catalytic activity of Fe 3 S 4 and the unique Lewis acid properties of Al 2 O 3 . The findings indicate that the optimized membranes can achieve a separation efficiency of over 99.3 % for various oil/water emulsions. The membrane demonstrates exceptional self-cleaning performance and stability, maintaining a separation efficiency of over 99 % even after 10 cycles of oil/water emulsion separation. Additionally, the membrane exhibited a catalytic degradation efficiency of 100 % for MB, RhB and MO under visible light in pH range of 2–12. The high separation efficiency, stability, self-cleaning performance, and wide pH range of these membranes make them promising candidates for long-term oily wastewater purification.

The anchoring effect between surface hydroxyls (–OH) and metal species has been extensively utilized to enhance catalyst stability. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the impact of alloying process involving different types of –OH species. In this research, we discovered that the formation of the alloy particles Pt 3 Co was significantly influenced by the presence of distinct –OH species on Al 2 O 3 . Intriguingly, those Pt 3 Co alloy particles exclusively formed on α-Al 2 O 3 owing to the weak interaction between both Pt and Co species and the triply bridging hydroxyls (µ 3 -OH). In contrast, Pt and Co species were found to be separately dispersed on γ-Al 2 O 3 because of the strong anchoring effect of terminal hydroxyls (µ 1 -OH), especially for Co atoms. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations highlighted the difference in adsorption energies of the two metals on different hydroxyl groups, providing a theoretical rationale for the influence of hydroxyl groups on alloy formation. The presence of Pt 3 Co alloy resulted in a fourfold increase in the specific catalytic rate of Pt 3 Co/α-Al 2 O 3 in CO-PROX compared to Pt 3 Co/γ-Al 2 O 3 . Arguably for the first time, this study demonstrates the association between alloy formation and –OH groups, providing a unique perspective on the design of alloy catalysts.

Vapor-phase catalytic deoxydehydration of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) to form propylene was performed over various metal-loaded catalysts in an H 2 flow at an ambient pressure. Cu-based catalysts exhibited a relatively high activity for the formation of propylene, while other metal-based catalysts, such as Pt-, Ru-, Rh-, Ni-, and Co-loaded SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , primarily produced C-C bond cleavage products. Cu-loaded H 3 PO 4 /SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalysts showed the best catalytic performance, and the catalyst with a Cu and H 3 PO 4 loading of 8 and 10 wt%, respectively, could provide a propylene selectivity of 95.0% with a complete conversion of 1,2-PDO at 280 °C. The Cu-loaded H 3 PO 4 /SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalysts primarily contained Lewis acid sites, and the Cu particles were well dispersed on the catalyst surface with an averaged particle size of 3.1 nm. It is proposed that the vapor-phase deoxydehydration of 1,2-PDO to propylene undergoes multi-step reactions with propanal and 1-propanol as the reaction intermediates.

Wearable gas sensors, possessing the advantages of high sensitivity, excellent flexibility, high permeability, low weight, and workability at ambient conditions, hold great promise for real-time health monitoring and early warnings of poisonous gases. However, obtaining high-performance wearable gas sensors utilizing the current well-developed inorganic semiconductor oxide sensing materials is still very limited due to their fragile and rigid nature. Herein, a newly designed wearable gas sensor based on an all-inorganic ASZ (Al2O3-stabilized ZrO2)/ZnO/SnO2 nanofibers is introduced for the first time. The flexible ASZ ceramic sponge substrate (with a Young’s modulus of 4.15 MPa) and ultrathin ZnO/SnO2 sensing layer endow the wearable gas sensor with promising properties such as super flexibility (with a bending radius of 5 mm), high gas permeability, and low weight. Furthermore, driven by UV light irradiation, this all-inorganic wearable sensor also demonstrates a stable NO2 sensing response under different bending states at room temperature, which enables the gas sensor to be more compatible with wearable sensing applications. This work offers a general method to achieve a high-performance wearable gas sensor based on inorganic materials and provides new insights into their potential in wearable gas-sensing applications.

The direct oxidation of toluene by O 2 to benzaldehyde with high efficiency is a bright route for the green production of benzaldehyde but still a significant challenge. In this study, we develop a ligand modification strategy by bonding organophosphonic acid (OPA) to VTiO x /γ-Al 2 O 3 to restructure its interface microenvironment for enhancement of toluene oxidation to benzaldehyde. The as-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent selectivity over 99 % under mild conditions. Results of comprehensive characterizations and calculations reveal that the OPA bonding in bidentate with the V 6-coordinated species causes noticeable phase reconstruction between VO x and TiO 2 , thereby generating nearby new reactive oxygen species, which is responsible for the conversion of toluene to benzaldehyde at temperatures as low as ∼50 °C, much lower than that over VO x /TiO 2 (>130°C). The interface microdomain around the bonding site of OPA helps to significantly weaken the methyl C H bond of toluene molecule in reaction manifested as the significant decrease in apparent activation energy. Hence, the current work reveals a novel mechanism of the typical catalyst VO x /TiO 2 under OPA bonding, which is useful to solve the classic difficult reaction of toluene to benzaldehyde by O 2 oxidation.

One-pot amination coupling of vicinal diols toward the synthesis of pyrazines provides an efficient and economically viable route to access N-heterocycles from biomass, yet the current methodology relies on a fragile homogeneous catalyst system, which limits the sustainability of the chemistry. In this work, we developed a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst 0.8Pt/13CeO2/Al2O3 which afforded diverse substituted pyrazines from readily available vicinal diols and ammonia with a yield up to 94% under mild reaction conditions and could be reused at least 6 times without obvious activity decay. Compared to the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst, the 0.8Pt/13CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited a 30-fold faster conversion rate of diols and an increased pyrazine selectivity from 48% to 79%. Characterizations revealed that doped CeO2 improved the dispersion of Pt, increased the electron density on the Pt sites, optimized the acid/basic property of the catalyst, and enhanced the adsorption strength and dehydrogenation ability of diols. All these features contributed to the increased activity and selectivity.

Silicon (Si)-based anode materials have been regarded as a viable alternative to replace traditional graphite owing to its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the industrial production of Si nanoparticles (Si NPs) is hindered by low tap density and inferior areal capacity. Here, the hard carbon supported Si NPs are encapsulated by soft carbon and Al 2 O 3 to fabricate HC@Si@SC@A sample for high performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Micrometer-sized HC serves as size regulator for Si NPs and SC serves to improve electric conductivity and suppress volume changes. With the existence of Al 2 O 3 , a thin and inorganic components-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has formed, greatly maintaining the stability of electrode during cycling. Therefore, the HC@Si@SC@A anode delivers an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 14.5 mAh cm −2 at 0.2 A g −1 . It can show excellent performance as an anode of full cells with the NCM811 as the cathode material.

Freon refrigerants, whose leakage will cause serious safety and environmental issues, have an urgent need of developing leakage detection technologies. Conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors exhibit limited efficacy in detecting halogenated Freons due to their chemical inertness and weak charge-transfer interactions. While recent innovations employing mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 overlayers have enabled Freon detection via catalytic decomposition sensing mechanism, the achieved sensing performance remains suboptimal. In this work, this issue is addressed by engineering a Pd-doped mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 (Pd-γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 ) gas sensor. The doped Pd atoms not only accelerate the decomposition of Freon molecules on the catalytic layer but also induce the Schottky-barrier effect in the SnO 2 sensing layer. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the Pd-γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 gas sensor shows outstanding response, good stability, repeatability, selectivity, and rarely-reported universality in sensing different Freon gases. Notably, a valuable solution is demonstrated in the leakage detection of next-generation refrigerants, Freon R1234yf. The sensing mechanism is deduced by exhaust gas components identification. These results highlight the promising potential for addressing the real-world needs of Freon refrigerant leakage detection technology.

Reaching high activity over Ni-based catalysts for CO 2 methanation at lower temperature remains a critical challenge. Herein, a surface hydroxylation strategy was developed to enhance the catalytic performance of Ni catalysts under mild conditions. By treating γ-Al 2 O 3 with H 2 O 2 solutions of varying concentrations, the surface hydroxyl (–OH) group density was effectively tuned. Catalytic evaluations revealed that hydroxylation of the support significantly enhances CO 2 methanation performance. Among the series, Ni/A-OH-6 exhibited the highest activity, achieving a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2.129 h −1 at 240 °C, approximately eight times higher than that of the unmodified Ni/A catalyst (0.266 h −1 ), thereby demonstrating a remarkable enhancement in intrinsic activity. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrated that surface –OH significantly enhanced CO 2 adsorption via the formation of HCO 3 * species. In situ DRIFTS studies further confirmed that hydroxyl-induced HCO 3 * species convert more readily to HCOO*, facilitating the hydrogenation pathway and thus contributing to the improved low-temperature activity. This work highlights surface hydroxyl engineering as a simple yet effective approach to boost catalytic efficiency, delivering guidance for the rational development of high-efficiency CO 2 utilization catalysts.

Catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) by Cu/Al 2 O 3 has garnered increasing interest in recent years due to its promising application prospects. Numerous investigations conducted on the Cu/Al 2 O 3 system, but its catalytic performance for CO oxidation is still not as promising as that of precious metal catalysts. Increasing the loading amount of the active Cu on Al 2 O 3 surface is a feasible method for improving its activity. However, with the increase of Cu loading, the agglomeration and enlargement of Cu particles is inevitable, which reduces the active Cu amount. Therefore, the utilization rate of Cu atoms is not high and the catalytic performance often can not further rise. Enhancing active Cu loading amount as high as possible is a prerequisite to further enlarge the activity of Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. Herein, self-synthesized Al 2 O 3 nanofibers (Al 2 O 3 -nf) with high specific surface area and abundant penta-coordinated aluminum (Al V ) are used as the support to maximize the Cu loading amount by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). And commercially available α-Al 2 O 3 is used for comparative experiment. The high specific surface area could make Cu high dispersion on Al 2 O 3 , even at 20 wt% Cu loads, which is beneficial to high concentration load of active Cu. The catalytic activity of Cu/Al 2 O 3 -nf-CVD gradually increases with the increase of Cu loading from 2 wt% to 20 wt%, exhibiting a clear linear correlation with the surface content of Cu 0 on the catalyst. Meanwhile, this result confirms that Cu 0 plays a crucial role in CO oxidation of Cu/Al 2 O 3 . However, commercial α-Al 2 O 3 reaches its highest activity when the Cu load is 5%, and then its activity begins to decrease due to the agglomeration of particles. Moreover, Cu/Al 2 O 3 -nf-CVD also exhibits remarkable thermal stability for CO oxidation. This work highlights a new strategy to synthesis of high Cu loading amount, high activity and thermostable Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst for low-temperature oxidation of CO.

In this work, alumina was selected as the second phase reinforced fused quartz ceramics and SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printing. The effect of the sintering procedure on the mechanical and dielectric properties of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were investigated in detail. The results show that the amount of cristobalite precipitation is the key factor affecting the properties of composite ceramics. The amount of cristobalite precipitation in composite ceramics could be controlled effectively by adjusting the heating rate, holding time, and sintering temperature. The sintering procedure is set as the heating rate of 4°C/min, sintering temperature of 1200°C, and holding time for 2 h, the flexural strength of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramic is 47.13 MPa, dielectric constant ranges from 2.90 to 2.97, and the tangent of loss angle is less than 0.041. SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics with high flexural strength and low dielectric constant were obtained by sintering procedure screening and optimization.

In this study, melamine-urea-formaldehyde/nano-Al2O3 (MUF/nano-Al2O3) composite gel foams were produced by foaming with CO2 generated by CaCO3 and phosphoric acid. Nano-Al2O3 was introduced to the MUF matrix based on the optimum formulation obtained by the response surface methodology based on Box–Behnken design, and the effects of nano-Al2O3 on the cell structure, apparent density, compressive strength, pulverization ratio, thermal stability, and thermal conductivity were investigated. The results revealed that the introduction of nano-Al2O3 could improve the foaming and mechanical properties of MUF with smaller cell sizes, a narrower cell size distribution, decreased apparent density, higher compressive strength, and a decreased pulverization ratio. MUF/nano-Al2O3-1.5 with the most uniform cell size distribution had a 21% increased compressive strength, but its apparent density and pulverization ratio decreased by 10% and 13%, respectively. Although the char yield decreased with the introduction of nano-Al2O3, MUF/nano-Al2O3 composite foams still presented improved thermal stability under 300 °C, with a thermal conductivity of 0.068 W/(m·K) and a limiting oxygen index of more than 30%. Therefore, MUF/nano-Al2O3 composite gel foam could be employed in coal mines as thermal insulation sealing material due to its better cell structure and mechanical properties.
