Combating infections from drug-resistant bacteria: Unleashing synergistic broad-spectrum antibacterial power with high-entropy MXene/CDs

Panyong Wang,Qiannan You,Yulu Liu,Huimin Miao,Wen-Fei Dong,Li Li

The growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics has posed challenges in treating associated bacterial infections, while the development of multi-model antibacterial strategies could efficient sterilization to prevent drug resistance. High-entropy MXene has emerged as a promising candidate for antibacterial synergy with inherent photothermal and photodynamic properties. Herein, a high-entropy nanomaterial of MXene/CDs was synthesized to amplify oxidative stress under near-infrared laser irradiation. Well-exfoliated MXene nanosheets have proven to show an excellent photothermal effect for sterilization. The incorporation of CDs could provide photo-generated electrons for MXene nanosheets to generate ROS, meanwhile reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs to further accelerate the generation of photo-generated electrons. The MXene/CDs material demonstrates outstanding synergistic photothermal and photodynamic effects, possesses excellent biocompatibility and successfully eliminates drug-resistant bacteria as well as inhibits biofilm formation. While attaining a remarkable killing efficiency of up to 99.99% against drug-resistant Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , it also demonstrates outstanding antibacterial effects against four additional bacterial strains. This work not only establishes a synthesis precedent for preparing high-entropy MXene materials with CDs but also provides a potential approach for addressing the issue of drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Accelerated “Electron Converter” Characteristics of NiCo-LDH for a CdS-Carbide Photocatalytic System with a Dual Heterointerface

Xujing Ji,Jiayang Zhang,Na Li,Lijing Qiu,Guoqing Zhang,Xinping Duan,Ruixin Wang

Accelerating the electron transfer and thus inhibiting recombination of photogenerated carriers hold paramount significance for photocatalytic solar hydrogen generation. Introducing an intermediate transition layer in the Schottky junction structure would modulate the Schottky barrier and thus enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Herein, we insert an efficient NiCo-layered-double-hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) lamina between molybdenum carbide-supported reduced graphene oxide (Mo2C/rGO, abbreviated as MG) and CdS, fabricating the sandwich composite CdS@NiCo-LDH@Mo2C/rGO (noted as CLMG) for photogenerated hydrogen. The inserted NiCo-LDH enables the dual heterogeneous interface phase of CdS/NiCo-LDH and NiCo-LDH/Mo2C and decreases the Schottky barrier of CdS/Mo2C, boosting the electron transfer of CLMG. In addition, the experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the work functions increase in the order of CdS < NiCo-LDH < Mo2C. Benefiting from the unique nanoarchitecture of the catalyst, the unidirectional cascade electron transport is realized following the order of CdS → NiCo-LDH → Mo2C with NiCo-LDH as an accelerated “electron converter”, which eventually expedites the photogenerated electron transfer of CdS to Mo2C and boosts carrier separation as well as the hydrogen reduction of the integrated system, achieving a 135 times greater H2 production rate (58.07 mmol g–1 h–1) than pristine CdS (0.43 mmol g–1 h–1). Moreover, CLMG exhibits excellent durability.

Application of ultra-thin CdS film as buffer layer in non-doped blue organic light-emitting diodes

Chang Xi,Jiang Wenlong,Ding Guiying,Wang Jin,Zhang Gang,Yao Guangxin

The device inserted 0.5 nm thick cadmium sulfide (CdS) as buffer layer, prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation method, has been studied on the non-doped blue organic light-emitting diode. Compared to the device without ultra-thin CdS film, the maximum luminance of the device with ultra-thin CdS film was 11,370 cd/m 2 at 11 V, and the maximum current efficiency reached 3.10 cd/A, increased 1.5 times and 1.2 times, respectively. In the optimized devices with the structure of ITO/MoO 3 (10 nm)/TPABBI (35 nm)/Bphen (40 nm)/CdS (0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 nm)/LiF (0.5 nm)/Al (100 nm), the effects of CdS layer on the photoelectric performance of the devices were investigated in detail. When the CdS thickness was 0.3 nm, the maximum luminance was 13,590 cd/m 2 at 9 V and the turn on voltage was only 3 V. The maximum current efficiency of 3.42 cd/A was obtained. It is indicated that the simple structure of the device with inserted ultra-thin CdS film, cheap and stable inorganic photoelectric material, may be a promising way to fabricate hybrid organic–inorganic LEDs with high performances.

In situ photodeposition of MoSx on CdS nanorods as a highly efficient cocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Xianliang Fu,Li Zhang,Lihua Liu,Hui Li,Sugang Meng,Xiangju Ye,Shifu Chen

MoSx was successfully loaded on hexagonal CdS nanorods as a cocatalyst for the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction (HER) by a convenient in situ photodeposition method with (NH4)2MoS4 as a precursor. The route is more effective to improve the activity of CdS than the conventional deposition methods. The optimal loading amount of MoSx was determined to be 0.2% (wt%, calculated in terms of MoS2) and the activity of the resulting sample is even higher than that of 0.2% Pt/CdS prepared by a similar photodeposition procedure. An intimate junction in the form of the Cd–S–Mo bond was suggested to account for the high HER performance. This finding opens a new avenue for the deposition and application of sulfide-based cocatalysts which have a great potential to replace noble metal cocatalysts for the photocatalytic HER.

Fabrication and surface stochastic analysis of enhanced photoelectrochemical activity of a tuneable MoS2–CdS thin film heterojunction

M. Zirak,M. Ebrahimi,M. Zhao,O. Moradlou,M. Samadi,A. Bayat,H.-L. Zhang,A. Z. Moshfegh

A very simple and well-controlled procedure was employed to prepare CdS nanoparticle/few-layer MoS2 nanosheet/Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film heterostructures. To tune and fabricate the CdS/MoS2(t)/ITO thin films with various surface topographies, first electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was used to deposit MoS2 nanosheets on the ITO substrate under an optimized applied potential difference (8 V) for different deposition times (t) of 30, 60, 120 and 240 s. Then, CdS nanoparticles were deposited via a successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The highest photo-current density of 285 μA cm−2 was measured for the CdS/MoS2(60 s)/ITO sample, which was about 2.3 times higher than the value obtained for bare CdS/ITO. The photo-enhancement mechanism of the CdS/MoS2(t)/ITO heterostructures was described using a stochastic model. The results show that the CdS/MoS2(60 s)/ITO electrode exhibits the highest roughness exponent (2α = 0.67) with the smoothest nanometric fluctuations, resulting in the best wetting properties, and thus, the highest interaction between the electrolyte and the sample surface, leading to the highest PEC activity. On the other hand, the samples with small α possess rough and nanometric-jagged fluctuations. The air trapping inside these microscopic surface fluctuations reduces the wettability as well as surface interaction between the sample and the electrolyte, resulting in low photo-current density.

Decoration of upconversion nanoparticles@mSiO2 core–shell nanostructures with CdS nanocrystals for excellent infrared light triggered photocatalysis

Yao-Wu Li,Liang Dong,Chen-Xi Huang,Yan-Chuan Guo,Xian-Zhu Yang,Yun-Jun Xu,Hai-Sheng Qian

In this work, we demonstrate a facile process to synthesize upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)@mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) core–shell nanoparticles decorated with CdS nanoparticles. The size and morphology of the as-prepared products have been investigated carefully; which show that the UCNPs and CdS nanoparticles are ca. 50 and 5 nm in diameter, respectively, and the mesoporous silica layer is 10 nm in thickness. The fluorescence spectra of the as-prepared UCNPs@mSiO2/CdS nanoparticles show that the fluorescence emissions (380, 451 and 470 nm) have been greatly quenched via energy transitions from the UCNPs nanoparticles (donors) to the CdS nanoparticles (acceptors). CdS nanoparticles were activated by the UCNPs to produce photo-generated ˙OH radicals under irradiation of infrared (IR) light. Photodegradation towards RhB dyes was studied to demonstrate the photocatalytic properties for the as-prepared UCNPs@mSiO2/CdS nanoparticles under irradiation of near infrared light. The as-designed nanostructures of UCNPs@mSiO2/CdS nanoparticles show excellent photocatalytic performance on photodegradation towards RhB under irradiation of infrared light. This kind of nanostructure may find potential applications in photodynamic therapy of cancer cells, for use as nanotransducers, in dyed sensitized solar cells etc.

Fabrication and excellent visible-light-driven photodegradation activity for antibiotics of SrTiO3 nanocube coated CdS microsphere heterojunctions

Guoling Wu,Lisong Xiao,Wei Gu,Weidong Shi,Dayu Jiang,Chunbo Liu

Extending the light absorption range and facilitating the separation of photoinduced carriers are effective strategies in the process of improving photocatalysis. An effective method is to construct a heterostructure. In this work, a new heterojunction, CdS/SrTiO3, was synthesized via a two step hydrothermal route and designed to decontaminate hazardous wastewater containing antibiotics under visible light irradiation. Specially, the efficient photocatalytic performance of the composites could be ascribed to the enhancement of visible light absorption efficiency and the efficient separation of the photoexcited carriers originating from the heterointerface. Furthermore, a plausible photocatalytic mechanism has been discussed in detail based on trap experiments and ESR analysis results. The CdS/SrTiO3 heterojunction has potential to be applied for purifying antibiotic pollutants in environmental wastewater because of its high efficiency and stability.

Enhancing Performance of CdS Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells by Two-Dimensional g-C3N4 Modified TiO2 Nanorods

Gao Qiqian,Sun Shihan,Li Xuesong,Zhang Xueyu,Duan Lianfeng,Lü Wei

In present work, two-dimensional g-C 3 N 4 was used to modify TiO 2 nanorod array photoanodes for CdS quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), and the improved cell performances were reported. Single crystal TiO 2 nanorods are prepared by hydrothermal method on transparent conductive glass and spin-coated with g-C 3 N 4 . CdS quantum dots were deposited on the g-C 3 N 4 modified TiO 2 photoanodes via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Compared with pure TiO 2 nanorod array photoanodes, the g-C 3 N 4 modified photoanodes showed an obvious improvement in cell performances, and a champion efficiency of 2.31 % with open circuit voltage of 0.66 V, short circuit current density of 7.13 mA/cm 2 , and fill factor (FF) of 0.49 was achieved, giving 23 % enhancement in cell efficiency. The improved performances were due to the matching conduction bands and valence bands of g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 , which greatly enhanced the separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons and holes and effectively suppressed interfacial recombination. Present work provides a new direction for improving performance of QDSSCs.

Dimensional heterostructures of 1D CdS/2D ZnIn2S4 composited with 2D graphene: designed synthesis and superior photocatalytic performance

Qingyong Tian,Wei Wu,Jun Liu,Zhaohui Wu,Weijing Yao,Jin Ding,Changzhong Jiang

The development of photocatalysts with superior photoactivity and stability for the degradation of organic dyes is very important for environmental remediation. In this study, we have presented a multidimensional (1D and 2D) structured CdS/ZnIn2S4/RGO photocatalyst with superior photocatalytic performance. The CdS/ZnIn2S4 helical dimensional heterostructures (DHS) were prepared via a facile solvothermal synthesis method to facilitate the epitaxial growth of 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on 1D CdS nanowires. Ultrathin 2D ZnIn2S4 nanosheets have grown uniformly and perpendicular to the surface of 1D CdS nanowires. The as-obtained 1D/2D CdS/ZnIn2S4 helical DHS show good photocatalytic properties for malachite green (MG). Subsequently, 2D reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was introduced into the 1D/2D CdS/ZnIn2S4 helical DHS as a co-catalyst. The photoactivity and stability of the CdS/ZnIn2S4/RGO composites are significantly improved after 6 cycles. The enhanced photoactivity can be attributed to the high surface area of RGO, the improved adsorption of organic dyes and the efficient spatial separation of photo-induced charge carriers. The transfer of photo-generated electrons from the interface of CdS and ZnIn2S4 to RGO also restricted the photocorrosion of metal sulfide, suggesting an improved stability of the reused CdS/ZnIn2S4/RGO composited photocatalyst.

Photoelectrochemical determination of inorganic mercury ions based on energy transfer between CdS quantum dots and Au nanoparticles

De-Man Han,Lu-Yi Jiang,Wen-Yuan Tang,Jing-Juan Xu,Hong-Yuan Chen

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for mercury ions (Hg 2   + ) was fabricated based on the energy transfer (ET) between CdS quantum dots (QDs) and Au nanoparticles (NPs) with the formation of T–Hg 2   + –T pairs. In the presence of Hg 2   + ions, a T-rich single-strand (ss) DNA labeled with Au NPs could hybridize with another T-rich ssDNA anchored on the CdS QDs modified electrode , through T–Hg 2   + –T interactions, rendering the Au NPs in close proximity with the CdS QDs and hence the photocurrent decrease due to the ET between the CdS QDs and the Au NPs. Under the optimal condition, the photocurrent decrease was proportional to the Hg 2   + concentration, ranging from 3.0   ×   10 −   9 to 1.0   ×   10 −   7   M, with the detection limit of 6.0   ×   10 −   10   M.

A highly sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor for 4-aminophenol based on CdS-graphene nanocomposites and molecularly imprinted polypyrrole

Rui Wang,Kai Yan,Fei Wang,Jingdong Zhang

A novel visible-light photoelectrochemical sensor was prepared based on FTO electrode modified with CdS quantum dots (QDs), graphene (GR) and molecularly imprinted polypyrrole (MIP). The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) indicated that GR facilitated the electron transfer of CdS modified electrode. Small amount of GR doped in CdS film could dramatically improve the photoelectrochemical response of modified electrode under visible-light illumination. While a MIP layer of 4-aminophenol was deposited on CdS-GR nanocomposites modified electrode, the photocurrent response to 4-aminophenol on the modified electrode was obviously promoted due to the specific binding of MIP with 4-aminophenol. The photoelectrochemical response was linearly proportional to the concentration of 4-aminophenol in the range of 5.0   ×   10 −8   mol   L −1 to 3.5   ×   10 −6   mol   L −1 , with a detection limit (3S/N) of 2.3   ×   10 −8   mol   L −1 . Moreover, the MIP/CdS-GR modified FTO electrode showed excellent selectivity. The proposed visible-light photoelectrochemical sensor based on MIP/CdS-GR/FTO provided a feasible tool for rapid, sensitive and selective determination of 4-aminophenol.

Synthesis of CdS quantum dots (QDs) via a hot-bubbling route and co-sensitized solar cells assembly

Ting Yang,Mengmeng Lu,Xiaoli Mao,Wenhong Liu,Lei Wan,Shiding Miao,Jinzhang Xu

More than 5.0   g luminescent CdS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via a hot-bubbling route. The synthetic parameters including temperature, growth time, feeding ratio Cd/S and capping ligands were studied to show great influence on the optical properties . Two types of CdS “magic-sized” clusters (MSCs) emitting at 313   nm and 323   nm were obtained at temperature lower than 80   °C. The PL quantum yields of the CdS QDs reaches 11.6% when trioctyphosphine oxide was used as ligand. The prepared CdS QDs have been transferred into aqueous solution via ligand exchange (LE). To expand the spectral response in photovoltaic devices, two different sizes of CdS QDs were deposited on mesoporous TiO 2 /SiO 2 electrode, and the co-sensitized solar cells (SCs) were prepared. It was found that the co-sensitized SCs show a higher conversion efficiency ( η   =   1.55%) than the single sized QDs sensitized SCs ( η   =   0.53%). The incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of co-sensitized SCs showed two peaks at 370   nm and 460   nm which resembles the absorption peaks of the two different sized QDs.
