Understanding the role of K in the significantly improved hydrogen storage properties of a KOH-doped Li–Mg–N–H system

Chu Liang,Yongfeng Liu,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

In this paper, we report a KOH-doped Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system with low operating temperatures and good cycling stability. The Mg(NH2)2–2LiH–0.07KOH sample can reversibly desorb/absorb ∼4.92 wt% hydrogen with a starting and peak dehydrogenation temperature of ∼75 °C and ∼120 °C, respectively, the lowest in the current Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system studied. Moreover, the cycling stability of de-/hydrogenation is also remarkably improved by KOH doping as the average capacity degradation of the Mg(NH2)2–2LiH–0.07KOH system is of only 0.002 wt% per cycle within 30 cycles. Detailed structural investigations reveal that during ball milling, the doped KOH can react with Mg(NH2)2 and LiH to convert to MgO, KH and Li2K(NH2)3, which work together to provide the synergistic effects of thermodynamics and kinetics on hydrogen desorption and absorption of the Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system upon heating, consequently inducing a significant improvement in hydrogen storage properties.

Host-guest engineering in a two-dimensional anionic porphyrinic metal-organic framework via cationic bodipy encapsulation for boosting photocatalytic H₂ evolution

Li-Lei Zhang,Xing-Yu Liu,Yu-Lan Wang,Ying Li,Xiao-Ge Zhu,Rong-Hui Cao,Hui-Ju Zhang,Xi-Yan Dong,Jian-Hua Qin

The development of efficient and stable photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen production remains a significant challenge, primarily limited by inadequate light harvesting and rapid charge recombination. This work addresses these issues through the rational design of a host-guest system within a metal-organic framework (MOF). We report a novel two-dimensional anionic porphyrinic MOF ( 1 ) synthesized using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMI) as a structure-directing agent, and replaced the inert BMI guests with photoactive 4,4-Difluoro-8-(1-methylpyridin-4-ium-4-yl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (Bodipy)-based cations by cationic exchange strategy, yielding the composite Bodipy@1 . The Bodipy units act as complementary antennas, broadening the visible-light absorption range, while the favorable energy-level alignment between the porphyrinic host (donor) and the Bodipy guest (acceptor) establishes an efficient intramolecular charge-transfer pathway. Density functional theory calculations and spectroscopic studies confirm a spatial separation of frontier orbitals, with the highest occupied crystal orbital localized on the porphyrin linker and the lowest unoccupied crystal orbital on the Bodipy cation, which effectively suppresses charge-carrier recombination. Consequently, Bodipy@1 exhibits a remarkable enhancement in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (∼2.5 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), outperforming the pristine MOF 1 . This work highlights a potent strategy of energy-level engineering via host-guest assembly, demonstrating that precise post-synthetic modification of anionic MOFs with functional cations is a powerful avenue for designing advanced, stable photocatalysts for solar fuel production. A 2D anionic porphyrinic MOF host undergoes post-synthetic cation exchange, replacing inert [BMI] + with photoactive Bodipy cations. The favorable energy-level alignment drives intramolecular electron transfer from the porphyrin linker (donor) to the Bodipy guest (acceptor), achieving spatial charge separation. This, combined with broadened light absorption, leads to significantly enhanced photocatalytic H₂ evolution. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Achieving Efficient Hydrogen Evolution of CNT@Ag@ZnIn2S4 Photocatalyst Under Visible Light by Regulating H─S Antibonding Orbital Occupancy via Ag

Jiacheng Zheng,Yulong Deng,Wenting Chen,Chengliao Deng,Xiaoming Cai,Jinming Cai,Honglin Tan

Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS), a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, has garnered significant attention due to its facile synthesis, high stability, suitable band gap, and abundant active sites. This study innovatively constructed a CNT@Ag@ZIS tubular structure, introducing Ag mediators as electron donors at the CNT-ZIS interface. Results demonstrate that the Ag mediators establish clear interfacial contact with both hexagonal ZIS and CNT. Consequently, ZIS exhibits markedly enhanced photocurrent response and improved separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. The catalyst achieved a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 18.44 mmol g −1 h −1 , representing an 8.7-fold enhancement over pristine ZIS. The study revealed that Ag, with its high Fermi level, facilitates interfacial electron transfer to ZIS. This induces a downshift of the p-band center (3p orbitals of S) in ZIS, simultaneously prolonging the H─S bond length and increasing the antibonding orbital occupation. This electron restructuring creates electron-rich S (2+δ)− active sites, substantially lowering the H 2 desorption energy barrier. Thus, the surface reaction kinetics of the sulfide are optimized through a regulation strategy targeting antibonding orbitals.

Hot-pressed CAU-10-H/PEEK composite films with robust thermal stability and moisture resistance for high-frequency low-dielectric applications

Hao Yu,Jiakai Shi,Jiaqi Wen,Shi Liu,Jingyu Cai,Linxi Hou

Permittivity is a key parameter characterising the polarisation capacity of a dielectric, and directly influences a material’s signal transmission and energy storage properties. As electronic devices evolve towards higher frequencies and greater integration, there is an increasing demand for polymer materials that combine low dielectric constant with excellent thermal and environmental stability. In this study, a aluminium-based metal-organic framework material CAU-10-H, which exhibits negative thermal expansion, was synthesised using the hydrothermal method and incorporated into PEEK matrix by hot-press to prepare CAU-10-H/PEEK composite films. The as-obtained CAU-10-H is relatively well dispersed within the PEEK matrix at low-to-moderate filler loadings, while its incorporation is associated with a reduction in the dielectric constant of the composite. The reduced dielectric response is mainly attributed to the introduction of low-polarity nanoporous domains, while the increase in free volume fraction may also contribute to this behaviour. When the filler content is 5 wt%, the composite exhibits a low die This may be attributed to the following factors:lectric constant across the 2–18 GHz frequency range, with an average value as low as 2.45, whilst the thermal decomposition temperature is above 500℃. In addition, this composite material offers moisture resistance, excellent dimensional stability, outstanding frequency stability and good signal integrity. This study provides new insights into the regulation of the high-frequency dielectric properties and stability of polymer composites using microporous materials with negative thermal expansion characteristics. Download: Download high-res image (181KB) Download: Download full-size image Owing to the inherent microporous structure of MOFs and their interaction with the polymer matrix, this composite material achieves a dual reduction in both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss at high frequencies, whilst exhibiting excellent thermal stability and superior moisture resistance.

The Effect of SiC Content on Microstructure and Microwave Heating Rate of h-BN/SiC Ceramics Fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering

Huilin Lun,Yi Zeng,Xiang Xiong,Lei Zhao,Dongling Li,Ziming Ye,Tianxiao Qian

Hexagonal boron nitride/silicon carbide (h-BN/SiC) ceramics were fabricated by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Phase and microstructure of ceramics were characterized and observed, respectively, using the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalysis. The effect of molar ratios of SiC toh-BN on the microstructure, relative density, hardness, thermal conductivity, and the heating rate by microwaves on the ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the orientation of flake-likeh-BN was significantly influenced by SiC content inh-BN/SiC ceramics. With the increasing of SiC content, theh-BN flakes gradually became an isotropic distribution from the preferred orientation aligning in a SPS pressure direction. The relative density ofh-BN/SiC ceramics was 97.6 ± 0.9% at a molar ratio of SiC toh-BN of 40/60 mol%. The preferential orientation ofh-BN flakes contributed to a relatively high thermal conductivity along the SPS pressure direction, which was beneficial to increasing the heating rate ofh-BN/SiC ceramics in microwave fields.

The effect of cation size (H+, Li+, Na+, and K+) on McLafferty-type rearrangement of even-electron ions in mass spectrometry

Chai YunFeng,Pan YuanJiang

Protonation and alkali-metal cation adduction are the most important ionization processes in soft-ionization mass spectrometry. Studies on the fragmentation mechanism of protonated and alkali-metal-cationized compounds in tandem mass spectrometry are essential and helpful for structural analysis. In some cases, it was often observed that a compound attached by different alkali-metal cations (or proton) exhibits similar fragmentation patterns but the relative abundances of product ions are different. This difference was considered to derive from the different electrostatic interactions of alkali-metal cations (or the bonded effect of proton) with the analyte. The alkali-metal cation with a smaller ionic radius shows stronger electrostatic interaction with the molecule because of its higher charge density. In addition, the bonded effect of the proton is stronger than the electrostatic interaction of the alkali-metal cation. In the present study, which used McLafferty-type rearrangements of even-electron ions ([M + Cat] + , Cat = H, Li, Na, K) as model reactions, the effect of cation size in mass spectrometric fragmentation reactions is highlighted. These considerations were also successfully applied to interpret the similar but distinct fragmentation behavior of proton and alkali-metal cation adducts of a synthetic compound (2-(acetamido(phenyl)methyl)-3-oxobutanoate) and a drug (entecavir).

Water balance challenge in humid flue gas CO2 capture: A 700-h bench-scale demonstration of a water-lean monophasic solvent

Shuai Wang,Yue Gu,Yu Feng,Ziru Zhao,Shufeng Shen

Nonaqueous amine-based absorbents offer advantages over aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA), but they inevitably evolve into water-lean systems when treating humid flue gas, presenting a challenge for long-term performance stability. In this work, a formulated water-lean absorbent, 50B-40BE-10 W, was evaluated for CO 2 capture from simulated humid flue gas in an upgraded lab-scale continuous plant over 720 h, benchmarking it against 30 mass% MEA. Key operational parameters and water balance behavior were systematically investigated to inform rational process design. Under a framework of absorbent-tailored regeneration strategy coupled with dynamic water-balance control, the 50B-40BE-10 W solvent achieved a remarkably low desorber heat duty, about 50–65% reduction compared to MEA. Critically, a dynamic water-management strategy was proposed and demonstrated, involving controlled discharge of desorber overhead condensate following a membrane dehydration process. This approach successfully maintained stable water content of ∼10 wt% in the solvent over a 100-h period, effectively addressing the challenge of water accumulation in water-lean systems. Furthermore, NMR analysis of the absorbent after ∼1700 h of operation, even under high‑oxygen exposure, indicated no catastrophic degradation. The compelling performance and stability demonstrated at the bench-scale pave a solid pathway for further development of this advanced water-lean capture technology.

Hexaniobate as a Recyclable Solid Base Catalyst to Activate C–H Bonds in Lignin Linkage Boosting the Production of Aromatic Monomers

Jie Li,Zhen Li,Jing Dong,Renbo Fang,Yingnan Chi,Changwen Hu

The targeting cleavage of lignin into value-added aromatic monomers has attracted increasing attention. Although the base-catalyzed depolymerization of lignin has been developed, the use of excess corrosive bases and their poor recyclability limit their industrial implementation. Herein, a catalytic amount of solid base K7HNb6O19 (KNb6) coupled with copper-modified graphitic carbon nitride (Cu/C3N4) shows enhanced catalytic performance for the oxidative cleavage of β-O-4 lignin linkages using molecular oxygen. Due to the synergetic effect between KNb6 and Cu/C3N4, 96% of the β-O-4 ketone model was converted under relatively mild conditions, and phenol (yield: 90%) and other aromatic monomers (yield: 90%) were obtained. Moreover, KNb6–Cu/C3N4 is robust, and its catalytic activity is basically maintained after five cycles. Experimental and theoretical studies (spectroscopic analysis, control experiments, kinetic study, density functional theory calculations, etc.) reveal that the surface basic O atoms of KNb6 can simultaneously activate the Cβ–H bond of β-O-4 ketone to promote the insertion of molecular oxygen, and subsequently, Cu/C3N4 catalyzes the selective cleavage of the Cα–Cβ bond. The catalysts were also active for the oxidative cleavages of other lignin models and oxidized organosolv lignin.

Effects of cross-scale h-BN grains and orientation degree on the mechanical and thermal properties of BN-matrix textured ceramics

Zhuo Tian,Jianning Lu,Xiaowei Feng,Bo Feng,Cuicui Yin,Yingfei Lin,Juan Wang

h-BN is a two-dimensional ceramic material with a lamellar structure , known for its typical orientation characteristics on mechanical and thermal properties. By optimizing the size and arrangement of h-BN grains in the matrix, the anisotropic characteristics of h-BN ceramics can be fully utilized to obtain ceramic materials with high thermal conductivity or high strength . In order to study the effect of grain orientation distribution on the mechanical and thermal properties of materials, the index of orientation distribution (IOP) was used to quantitatively characterize the orientation degree of h-BN grains and analyzed the effect of h-BN grain size on material properties . The results show when the initial h-BN size is 13.50 μm, the ceramic has the highest orientation degree/-507, and the mechanical and thermal properties show obvious anisotropy. While the related properties of BN-YAG ceramics varies significantly with the decrease of initial h-BN grain size.

Aqueous extract of Amydrium sinense (Engl.) H. Li alleviates hepatic fibrosis by suppressing hepatic stellate cell activation through inhibiting Stat3 signaling

Li Jingyan,Wu Bingmin,Zeng Lishan,Lin Ying,Chen Qiuhe,Wang Haixia,An Lin,Zhang Jiajun,Chen Siyan,Huang Junying,Zhan Ruoting,Zhang Guifang

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of the water extract of Amydrium sinense (Engl.) H. Li (ASWE) against hepatic fibrosis (HF) and clarify the underlying mechanism. Methods: The chemical components of ASWE were analysed by a Q-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer. In our study, an in vivo hepatic fibrosis mouse model was established via an intraperitoneal injection of olive oil containing 20% CCl4. In vitro experiments were conducted using a hepatic stellate cell line (HSC-T6) and RAW 264.7 cell line. A CCK-8 assay was performed to assess the cell viability of HSC-T6 and RAW264.7 cells treated with ASWE. Immunofluorescence staining was used to examine the intracellular localization of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3). Stat3 was overexpressed to analyse the role of Stat3 in the effect of ASWE on HF.Results: Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses showed that candidate targets of ASWE, associated with protective effects against hepatic fibrosis, were related to inflammation response. ASWE ameliorated CCl4-induced liver pathological damage and reduced the liver index and alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels. ASWE also decreased the serum levels of collagen Ⅰ (Col Ⅰ) and hydroxyproline (Hyp) in CCl4-treated mice. In addition, the expression of fibrosis markers, including α-SMA protein and Acta2, Col1a1, and Col3a1 mRNA, was downregulated by ASWE treatment in vivo. The expression of these fibrosis markers was also decreased by treatment with ASWE in HSC-T6 cells. Moreover, ASWE decreased the expression of inflammatory markers, including the Tnf-α, Il6 and Il1β, in RAW264.7 cells. ASWE decreased the phosphorylation of Stat3 and total Stat3 expression and reduced the mRNA expression of the Stat3 gene in vivo and in vitro. ASWE also inhibited the nuclear shuttling of Stat3. Overexpression of Stat3 weakened the therapeutic effect of ASWE and accelerated the progression of HF.Conclusion: The results show that ASWE protects against CCl4-induced liver injury by suppressing fibrosis, inflammation, HSC activation and the Stat3 signaling pathway, which might lead to a new approach for preventing HF.

Collagenase-Loaded H-TiO2 Nanoparticles Enhance Ultrasound Imaging-Guided Sonodynamic Therapy in a Pancreatic Carcinoma Xenograft Model via Digesting Stromal Barriers

Jiali Luo,Jing Cao,Guangrong Ma,Xue Wang,Yu Sun,Cong Zhang,Zhan Shi,Yiqing Zeng,Tao Zhang,Pintong Huang

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), a noninvasive therapy that relies on sonosensitizers and generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), has attracted considerable attention in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. However, being surrounded by dense stromal barriers, pancreatic cancer exhibits high interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) and hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment (TME), resulting in poor SDT efficacy. Collagenase-loaded hollow TiO2 (Col-H-TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) capable of degrading stromal barriers and producing sufficient ROS production were synthesized in this study. After administration of NPs in the patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model, ultrasonic irradiation-released collagenase degraded tumor matrix fibers, decreased intratumoral IFP, and enhanced the penetration and retention of NPs within tumor tissues. Moreover, the NPs accumulated within the tumor not only generate abundant ROS under the influence of ultrasound irradiation but also improve intratumoral ultrasound signal, providing ultrasonic imaging-guided highly effective SDT for pancreatic cancer. In conclusion, this research improves the SDT technique and enhances the visualization of pancreatic cancer by remodeling the TME and is a promising strategy for further clinical applications.
