Development of efficient catalysts is important to promote the deoxygenation of oils and fats for the production of biofuels. In this study, several bimetallic catalysts including Fe, Co, and Ni were impregnated onto TiO2 and evaluated for their efficacy in deoxygenating long-chain trimethylolpropane trioleate (TMPTO) under a N2 atmosphere. FeNi/TiO2 exhibited the highest selectivity of 65.7% for C8–C16 hydrocarbons with a relatively good 85.3% deoxygenation performance. The catalyst maintained a stable deoxygenation efficiency of around 70.6% and a selectivity of 46.7% after four runs. Impregnation of transition metals leads to a decrease in the specific surface area, while the additional active sites facilitate deoxygenation and cleavage reactions. The acidic sites provided by Fe and TiO2 supports and the electronic modulation of Ni enhance the ability of the catalyst to crack C–O bonds. The results demonstrate the potential of using transition metals under a N2 environment to convert super long-chain oxygenated fatty acids into jet-fuel-range hydrocarbons.

Developing low-temperature, high-efficiency ammonia decomposition catalysts for hydrogen production is essential for the broad application of hydrogen. This study conducted a systematic investigation of Ru/MgO catalysts modified with different alkali metals (Na, K, Cs), unveiling the impact of these modifications on catalyst performance and developing a highly efficient low-temperature ammonia decomposition catalyst. The addition of all alkali metals enhances the catalytic performance of Ru/MgO for ammonia decomposition, especially the addition of K, which results in the optimal enhancement of the catalyst, achieving a 75% ammonia decomposition efficiency at 350 °C (GHSV= 2,000 mL/h·gcat), more than doubling the performance of the unmodified Ru/MgO catalyst. The study revealed that the addition of potassium (K) altered the rate-determining step of the ammonia decomposition reaction from nitrogen recombination to the dissociation of the first hydrogen atom, and reduced the overall energy barrier required for the reaction. This facilitated the desorption of nitrogen from the Ru surface and the conversion of NH3, thereby accelerating the rate of the ammonia decomposition reaction.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect plays a crucial role in the field of solar energy utilization. In this work, we successfully prepared a Cu 2-x Se/ZnSe S-scheme heterojunction with a broad-spectrum response using the hot-injection and low-temperature water bath method. Importantly, we demonstrated that the photothermal effect induced by the LSPR of nonstoichiometric Cu 2-x Se can significantly improve the slow kinetics of water splitting, resulting in an apparent activation energy reduction from 50.1 to 28.7 kJ·mol −1 . This improvement is responsible for achieving the highest photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 63.6 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 over 2.7 % Cu 2-x Se/ZnSe under the wavelength ranged from 200 to 2500 nm, which is 3.4 and 5.6 times higher than that of ZnSe and Cu 2-x Se, respectively. Furthermore, the composite exhibits a remarkable H 2 production rate of 0.108 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under near-infrared spectroscopy (800<λ<2500 nm), while ZnSe shows limited capability in H 2 releasing. Additionally, Cu 2-x Se/ZnSe demonstrates distinct photocurrent response when λ > 800 nm. The enhanced performance in H 2 evolution can be attributed to the synergistic effect of LSPR-induced light absorption and S-scheme heterojunction, which not only expands the light absorption range to the near-infrared region but also facilitates hot electron injection, charge carrier separation and transfer, leading to a faster surface reaction kinetics. This study provides an effective approach for designing a broad-spectrum light responsive non-precious metal-based photothermal-assisted photocatalytic system.

The photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 over CdS faces significant challenges due to dominant hydrogen evolution competition and inefficient CO 2 activation. Herein, a magnetic cobalt-doping strategy is proposed that fundamentally restructures the surface reaction dynamics of CdS, effectively switching the photocatalytic pathway from H 2 evolution to CO 2 reduction. It is demonstrated that cobalt incorporation markedly suppresses charge recombination while increasing the population of photogenerated electrons available for CO 2 activation. Density functional theory calculations uncover two critical doping effects: an upshifted d-band center that optimizes CO 2 adsorption and activation energetics, and a substantially reduced energy barrier for the formation of rate-determining COOH* intermediate. Crucially, the introduced cobalt species induce pronounced spin polarization, which facilitates the separation of charge carriers. This spin effect can be further amplified under an external magnetic field to improve photocatalytic performance. The synergistic interplay of these effects endows Co-doped CdS with an exceptional CO production rate of 2322.8 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation and magnetic field application – a 10.9-fold enhancement over pristine CdS. This work pioneers a novel paradigm that concurrently addressing thermodynamic (reaction pathway), kinetic (energy barrier), and electronic-spin (charge separation) factors, providing new design principles for breaking activity-selectivity trade-offs in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction systems.

Selective ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) to specific C2 species offers a promising approach to pair with cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for electrochemical upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic into high-value chemicals and H 2 . Efficient catalyst with tailored adsorptive interaction strength with intermediates is pivotal to fulfill such a scenario. Herein, a self-supported PdNi/NF electrode with deposition of PdNi hybrid onto nickel foam (NF) substrate was prepared by a gentle replacement reaction, which demonstrated high catalytic activity for EGOR toward glycolate with high faradaic efficiency (90 ± 2 %), decent yield (0.7 ± 0.01 mmol h −1 cm −2 ) and acceptable stability at a low applied potential of 0.8 V, which enabled electrosynthesis of glycolate via electrooxidation of PET hydrolysate. Meanwhile, a self-supported Cu, Co bimetallic phosphide onto NF substrate (CuCoP/NF) was prepared for HER catalysis, which featured a low overpotential of 117 mV at cathodic current density ( J ) of −100 mA cm −2 and decent durability. The further pairing of anodic EGOR and cathodic HER enabled electrolysis of PET hydrolysate to coproduce glycolate and H 2 at an energy-saving manner. This work provides a viable paradigm for coproduction of glycolate and H 2 from electrochemical upcycling of PET plastic, and presents essential instruction for reclamation of obsolete resource via sustainable and waste-to-treasure manner.

It is of great significance but challenge to achieve superior H 2 O splitting performance by tailoring active sites in novel Fe-based mixed oxides in order to boost H 2 O activation to achieve the oxidation of metallic Fe to Fe 3+ back into parent substrate rather than thermodynamically more favourable Fe 2+ (Fe-O v ) usually exhibiting low H 2 O activation in chemical looping water splitting (CLWS). Herein, we for the first time reported the performance of Ga-doped garnets (Y 3 Fe 2 Ga x Al 3-x O 12 abbreviated as YF 2 G x Al 3-x , x = 1 and 2) for CLWS which surpassed most of the state-of-the-art Fe-based oxides by virtue of marvelous peak H 2 production rate of 195.3 mL min −1 g −1 , H 2 productivity of 60.7 mL g −1 , 100 % H 2 purity and outstanding redox stability for YF 2 G 2 A 1 . It was clarified that Ga doping led to the formation of an interface with Fe 0 and Ga δ+ -O v in garnets, which synergistically improved H 2 O dissociation, leading to the direct oxidation of Fe 0 to Fe 3+ back into garnets and thus accounting for its prominent performance.

In this study, a series of vanadium-doped MoS 2 (V-MoS 2 ) powders synthesized via a hydrothermal method were coated on nickel foam (NF) as the cathode in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). It is verified that the doped V was incorporated into the MoS 2 lattice with the state of V 2+ and V 4+ , and especially V 2+ bonded with edge the sulfur atom while V 4+ replaced the Mo 4+ and embedded in the crystal lattice of Mo S. Meanwhile, the doping ratio of V 2+ /V 4+ decreased with the increase in the doping content of V, revealing that the V 4+ is more beneficial for the efficiency of V-doping. Electrochemical testing demonstrated that the optimal doping amount of 10 % V significantly enhanced the electrochemical activity of MoS 2 by the activating of the inert basal plane. In the MEC system, the 10 % V-MoS 2 based electrode achieved a peak current density of 84.3 mA cm −2 with a hydrogen production rate of 289 L H₂ L −1 cycle −1 , a coulombic efficiency of 80.61 % and a cathodic hydrogen conversion efficiency of 44.84 %, which is much better than many conventional MEC catalysts, demonstrating a great potential for green hydrogen production.

The development of membranes capable of directly separating H 2 by harnessing the residual heat from the water-gas shift reaction represents a significant challenge in the field of membrane separation technology. In this study, an asymmetric preparation strategy was employed to construct porous membranes with ultra-thin dense layers for achieving high-efficiency H 2 separation. We developed a novel ultra-thin polymer-based dual-phase hydrogen separation membrane with a porous architecture (p-OPBI-PANI), designed for operation under elevated temperatures ranging from 120 to 300 °C. This membrane achieved an exceptionally thin dense layer of 200 nm through a non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process utilizing dibutyl phthalate (DBP), while polyaniline (PANI) nanofillers were strategically incorporated into the polybenzimidazole (PBI) matrix to enhance structural and functional properties. Systematic modulation of non-solvent and nanofiller concentrations enables precise optimization of membrane morphology and separation performance. The optimized membrane demonstrates remarkable H 2 permeance (120 GPU) coupled with exceptional H 2 /N 2 selectivity of 205, surpassing conventional polymeric membranes. Furthermore, it exhibits robust operational stability in complex gas environments containing sulfur compounds (e.g., H 2 S) and high humidity, maintaining consistent performance over prolonged operation (>100 h). This work introduces a versatile fabrication paradigm for asymmetric-polymer hydrogen separation membranes, offering significant potential for hydrogen purification in industrial applications under harsh operating conditions.

Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting holds significant potential in addressing the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and insufficient surface catalytic reaction kinetics hinder the photocatalytic process. Constructing the catalytic systems with multi-channel charge-separation can effectively alleviate those issues. In this work, ternary PdO@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composites have been synthesized through precursor calcination and low-temperature reduction, where PdO and Cu 2 O nanoparticles couple with the TiO 2 nanorods. Comparing to single TiO 2 , binary PdO@TiO 2 and TiO 2 -Cu 2 O, the PdO@TiO 2 -Cu 2 O hybrid exhibits enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance (5831μmol g -1 h −1 ), with a hydrogen production rate more than three times that of single TiO 2 . Based on the band structures of TiO 2 and Cu 2 O, along with the photochemical/electrochemical, in-situ EPR, Photoluminescence (PL) tests, and work function calculations, the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction at the TiO 2 -Cu 2 O interface under light illumination facilitates the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of TiO 2 with holes in the valence band (VB) of Cu 2 O. In this regard, the established built-in electric field significantly accelerates the transfer of photogenerated charges while preserving their respective strong oxidation and reduction capabilities. Meanwhile, the introduction of PdO enriches the holes and further enhances the rate of charge separation. This S-scheme heterojunction with directional charge transfer and oxidation cocatalyst collectively form multi-channels of charge separation, optimizing charge migration and enabling efficient hydrogen production, thus improving the photocatalytic capability of pristine TiO 2 . This study provides a rational approach to construct efficient S-scheme heterojunction/oxidation cocatalyst multi-component catalytic systems for water splitting into hydrogen.

Developing reliable and cost-effective optical hydrogen sensors detecting hydrogen leakage at room temperature is of paramount importance. It requires that hydrogen sensors show a rapid and significant color change in low concentration H 2 /air mixtures, which remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an eye-readable hydrogen sensor based on Pt decorated hexagonal WO 3 (W 0 /300/Pt). It is evidenced W 0 /300/Pt exhibits excellent gasochromic properties, with reflectivity differences of 78% and 73% and fast coloring times of 3.10 s and 2.64 s in 10% H₂/Ar and 10% H₂/air. Moreover, W 0 /300/Pt shows an obvious color change from light gray to dark blue finally with ΔE value of 71, and exhibits a detect limitation less than 0.1% H 2 in 1 s. The gasochromic mechanism related to crystalline phase structure was unveiled via in situ characterization techniques. This study also presents novel evidence that bolsters the “localized water molecules” model and provides theoretical insights for the advancement of highly sensitive WO 3 gasochromic materials.

Herein, utilizing cheap carbonated beverage (Fanta) as the carbon source, the multiphasic TiO 2 /Cu-C composites are successfully designed and prepared for efficient photocatalytic H 2 generation. Excitingly, the controllable preparation of triphasic, biphasic and rutile phase TiO 2 can be achieved by adjusting the reaction temperature. As expected, under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation, the triphasic TiO 2 /Cu-C-5 exhibited the best photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate (HER, 28.53 mmol g −1 h −1 ), which is about 21.45 and 1.65 times as high as than that of triphasic TiO 2 and P25/Cu-C-5, respectively. In addition, the HER reached 7.67, 12.47 and 3.46 mmol g −1 h −1 in Tianyi lake water, Ganjing river water and Bohai seawater, respectively. Furthermore, the experiment of inorganic salt ions effect on HPR shows that NO 3 − and SO 4 2 - ions have great negative influence. This transient photocurrent response, photoluminescence and photoluminescence lifetime experiments indicate that the carrier Cu-C and the construction of heterophase junctions are conducive to the separation of photogenerated charges and reducing their recombination efficiency, resulting in the improvement of the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Meanwhile, the Cu-C sample contains hollow spheres, which facilitate the refraction of light and enhance its absorption. These advantages strongly prove that the triphasic TiO 2 /Cu-C photocatalyst has potential application prospects in the field of catalytic hydrogen evolution in deionized water and natural water.

Photocatalytic H 2 production via water splitting in a noble-metal-free photocatalytic system has attracted much attention in recent years. In this study, noble-metal-free Ni 3 N was used as an active cocatalyst to enhance the activity of g-C 3 N 4 for photocatalytic H 2 production under visible-light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). The characterization results indicated that Ni 3 N nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the g-C 3 N 4 , which accelerated the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and resulted in enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution under visible-light irradiation. The hydrogen evolution rate reached ∼305.4 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is about three times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 , and the apparent quantum yield (AQY) was ∼0.45% at λ = 420. Furthermore, the Ni 3 N/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst showed no obvious decrease in the hydrogen production rate, even after five cycles under visible-light irradiation. Finally, a possible photocatalytic hydrogen evolution mechanism for the Ni 3 N/g-C 3 N 4 system is proposed.
