Developing an artificial dynamic nanoscale molecular machine that dissipatively self-assembles far from equilibrium is fundamentally important but is significantly challenging. Herein, we report dissipatively self-assembling light-activated convertible pseudorotaxanes (PRs) that show tunable fluorescence and enable deformable nano-assemblies. A pyridinium-conjugated sulfonato-merocyanine derivative (EPMEH) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) form the 2EPMEH ⊂ CB[8] [3]PR in a 2:1 stoichiometry, which phototransforms into a transient spiropyran containing 1:1 EPSP ⊂ CB[8] [2]PR when exposed to light. The transient [2]PR thermally relaxes (reversibly) to the [3]PR in the dark accompanied by periodic fluorescence changes that include near-infrared emission. Moreover, octahedral and spherical nanoparticles are formed through the dissipative self-assembly of the two PRs, and the Golgi apparatus is dynamically imaged using fluorescent dissipative nano-assemblies.

Digital light processing has significant advantages, such as high repeatability, low failure rate, and no extrusion shear force. To make it possible to print complex structures with high resolution, the consecutive development of photocurable ink materials is indispensable. In this work, photo-functionalized pullulan (Pul-NB) was prepared by introducing norbornene groups into pullulan chains, and an ink material suitable for photocurable printing was prepared by thiol-ene click reaction. The rheology, water absorption, and mechanical properties of the Pul-NB precursor solution and photocurable hydrogel were investigated. The optimal composition of Pul-NB ink for three-dimensional (3D) printing was obtained by adjusting the degree of substitution, Pul-NB concentration, and thiol crosslinking agent. This novel bioink for digital light processing 3D printing showed good printability and high shape fidelity. This ink material provides an excellent alternative for printing biomimetic soft tissue organs, high-throughput tissue models, soft robots, etc.

Acid phosphatase (ACP) is a key marker in the diagnosis of many diseases. However, exploiting a simple and sensitive sensor for the real-time quantitative analysis of ACP is still challenging. Herein, we attempted to develop a sensitive colorimetric sensing strategy for the detection of ACP based on light-activated oxidase mimic property of carbon dots (CDs). The synthesized CDs were proved to be capable of intrinsic light-activated oxidase mimic activity, which could generate reactive oxygen species to oxidize chromogenic substrate under ultraviolet light stimulation. Interestingly, this light-activated oxidase mimic behavior would be effectively suppressed by the antioxidant ascorbic acid (AA), a product from the hydrolysis of 2-phospho-L-ascorbic acid trisodium (AAP) mediated by ACP. Based on the above property, a facile and sensitive colorimetric sensing method for ACP was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range for ACP 0.1–5.5 U/L, and the detection limit was 0.056 U/L. Compared with conventional nanozyme based ACP assay systems, the catalytic activity of light-activated nanozyme could be conveniently regulated by switching the light on and off, which made it easier to precisely control the extent of the reaction and ensured the accuracy of the assay. In addition, the proposed sensing system would be readout directly by the naked eye or smartphone-based RGB analysis system, and have been successfully applied to analyze diluted in diluted fetal bovine serum and urine samples spiked with ACP. All these results indicated that this approach holds good promise for future applications in clinical analysis and point-of-care (POC) biosensor platforms.

Abstract An atomically economical green protocol for the hydrofunctionalization of olefins to higher aliphatic alcohols with 100% anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity was developed via visible-light photocatalytic coupling. This method employs cheap, readily available and abundant methanol as both the C1 feedstock and the hydrogen source under visible light irradiation over CdS photocatalyst. A wide scope of olefin substrates could be hydrofunctionalized successfully to the corresponding higher alcohols with high selectivity. Besides alcohol, acetone and acetonitrile can also couple with olefins to generate the corresponding hydrofunctionalization products, suggesting promising potential industrial application. Graphical Abstract Hydrofunctionalization of olefins to value-added chemicals with high selectivity was achieved via visible-light photocatalytic cross-coupling.

Understanding the dispersion state of 2D black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets is of great significance for the application of BP based materials. However, the dispersion state of BP colloids cannot be analyzed by the conventional methods based on the optical signal detecting due to the intensive light absorption of BP in the ultraviolet-visible region and the high turbidity caused by the aggregation of pristine BP nanosheets. In this work, 3D light scattering has been proven to be an effective technique to characterize the dispersion characteristics of nanocolloids with intensive light absorption and limited dispersity by suppressing multiple scattering. The effect of the concentration, the temperature and the solvent on the dispersion stability of BP nanosheets has been systematically studied by modulated 3D cross-correlation. It has been shown that measurements at smaller angles can obtain better autocorrelation functions. The BP colloids exhibit excellent colloidal stability when the concentration is below 250 μgmL−1, above which aggregation tends to form. Increasing the temperature has shown to result in the formation of aggregation in the colloids. BP nanosheets possess better dispersion state in polar solvents than in nonpolar solvents, and the aggregation process in nonpolar solvents can be monitored by the slow relaxation mode of 3D light scattering. This study indicates that 3D light scattering paves way to analyze the dispersion dynamics of various 2D nanoparticle colloids with intensive light absorption and poor dispensability.

In this research contribution, nano-aggregates have been fabricated by introducing lanthanide (Ln3+) ions into solutions of amphiphilic diblock copolymers of polystyrene-b-poly (acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA). The coordination of acrylic acid segments to lanthanide cations induces diblock copolymer (BCPs) self-assembly in order to design stable white luminescent hybrid nanoparticles with fine uniform particle size. The introduction of Ln3+ions (Eu3+and Tb3+) bestows the micelles, precisely white light, upon excitation of 342 nm. Lanthanide coordination cross-linking of poly (acrylic acid) segments, or blocks, endows the micelles higher thermal stability than that of BCPs micelles without cross-linking. As the most important key point of this work, the regular and stable nano-particles with high emission quality can make fully flexible electroluminescent devices with self-formation or uncoordinated into polymer hosts. Instead of inorganic luminescent nanoparticles with hard cores, this method can potentially apply for fully flexible white-light emitting diodes (FFWLEDs).Keywords:nano-aggregates;diblock copolymer;fully flexible;white-light

In this paper, we report the synthesis, the structural and optical characterization of CdSe/CdS//CdS nanorods (NRs) and their exploitation in nanorod-based light-emitting diodes (NR-LEDs). Two kinds of NRs of CdSe/CdS and CdSe/CdS//CdS were incorporated into the structure of solution-processed hybrid NR-LEDs. Compared to CdSe/CdS, the efficiencies of CdSe/CdS//CdS NR-based LEDs are overwhelmingly higher, specifically showing unprecedented values of peak current efficiency of 19.8 cd/A and external quantum efficiency of 15.7%. Such excellent results are likely attributable to a unique structure in CdSe/CdS//CdS NRs with a relatively high quantum yield, thick CdS outer shell, and rod structure which minimize nonradiative energy transfer between closely packed NRs in emitting layer.

The ZnO/cyclized polyacrylonitrile (CPAN) composites were prepared by impregnation and heat treatment process. The morphology, crystal type, internal structure of ZnO/CPAN nanocomposites were characterized by UV-vis-diffuse reflectance spectroscope (DRS), X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The visible light photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CPAN was evaluated by degradation of methyl orange under xenon lamp irradiation. The DRS results indicate that the absorption of ZnO/CPAN nanocomposites in the visible region was significantly higher than that of pure ZnO nanoparticles. The TEM results show that the surface of ZnO nanoparticles is occupied by the CPAN in small amount. The results of photocatalytic experiment show that the photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoparticles can be improved significantly by the modification of CPAN. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was also discussed. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 38: 336–344, 2019

Quantum dots (QDs) can achieve high quantum yields close to unity in liquid solutions, whereas they exhibit a decreased conversion efficiency after being integrated into solid-state polymer matrices for light-emitting diode (LED) devices, which is called the host matrix effect. In this study, we propose a solid–liquid hybrid-state QD-LED to solve this issue. The ethylene-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (ethylene-PDMS) is used to establish a solid-state cross-linked network, whereas the methyl-terminated PDMS (methyl-PDMS) is used in its liquid state. From a macroscopic level, the cured solid–liquid hybrid-state PDMS (SLHP) composites reach a solid state, which is stable and flexible enough to be used in LED devices. Compared with LEDs using conventional QD/solid PDMS composites at equal color conversion efficiency ranging from 40% to 60%, the luminous flux of LEDs with QD/SLHP composites is increased by 13.0% using an optimized methyl-PDMS concentration of 85 wt. %. As a result, high efficiency QD-LEDs using QDs as the only color convertor with luminous efficacy of 89.6 lm/W (0.19 A) were achieved, which show a working stability comparable with that using conventional solid-state structures at a harsh condition. Consequently, the novel approach shows great potential for achieving high efficiency and high stability QD-LEDs, which is also compatible with current structures used in illumination and display applications.

Reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to various value-added chemical products by photocatalysis could effectively alleviate the serious problems of global warming and energy shortages. Currently, most commonly prepared photocatalysts present poor performance under visible light irradiation. In this study, we adopted a facile, scalable and controllable approach to prepare ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) porous Co 3 O 4 catalysts (Co 3 O 4 -NS) by air calcining of the ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOFs) nanosheet templates to validly reduce CO 2 with a Ru-based photosensitizer under visible light irradiation. Benefitting from the structural nature of MOFs precursors, the calcined Co 3 O 4 -NS inherit the morphology of 2D and well-developed porosity, which support the transport of electrons, enhance the adsorption of CO 2 molecules, and render abundant catalytic sites for CO 2 activation. As a result, the CO generation rate is approximately 4.52 μmol·h −1 with selectivity of 70.1%, which is superior to the Co 3 O 4 bulk catalysts (Co 3 O 4 -BK). Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the model of Co 3 O 4 monolayer has stronger CO 2 adsorption energy than that of the Co 3 O 4 bulk, which is beneficial for the CO 2 -to-CO conversion. This MOF-engaged strategy provides new insight into the controlled synthesis of advanced ultrathin holey nanosheets to improve the efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Exploiting photocatalysts with characteristics of low cost, high reactivity and easy recovery offer great potentials for complete elimination of toxic chemicals and environmental remediation. In this work, Au/TiO 2 network-like nanofibers were fabricated using a facile electrospinning technique followed by calcinations in air. Photocatalytic tests indicate that the Au/TiO 2 network-like nanofibers possess an excellent photodegradation rate of rhodamine B (RB) under UV, visible and natural light radiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the plasmonic resonance absorption of Au nanoparticles, and photogenerated electrons and holes are effectively separated by the Au/TiO 2 heterojunction structures. Furthermore, the three-dimensional network structure can provide a large number of active sites for RB degradation.

Using zinc acetate, cerium acetate and glycerol as main raw materials, the Ce doped ZnO (Ce/ZnO) with molar doping ratio of 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0% and 3.0% were prepared by hydrothermal method at 200 °C. The structure and morphology of prepared Ce/ZnO were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron spectroscopy (EDS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The visible-light photocatalytic activity of prepared Ce/ZnO was investigated by methyl orange which was used as simulated sewage. The results show that the optimum doping amount of Ce/ZnO is 0.5% Ce, and the band gap width of 0.5% Ce/ZnO is red-shifted from 3.12 eV to 2.79 eV. The morphology of ZnO and Ce/ZnO are all mainly spherical particles. The average particle diameter of ZnO and Ce/ZnO are all from about 3μm to 4μm. The 0.5% Ce/ZnO show highly photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation, and the degradation of methyl orange conforms to the first order power with the apparent rate in paper 0.018 min−1.
