MOFs-derived MoS2/C3N4 composites with highly efficient charge separation for photocatalytic H2 evolution

Shengjun Liu,Dianjun Chi,Qichao Zou,Yan Ma,Rong Chen,Kui Zhang

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production utilizing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts is one of the most promising methods for production of H 2 . However, pure MOFs have poor mechanical and chemical stability. Preparing MOF-derived materials with MOFs as templates is an effective method to improve their stability. MOFs were used as precursors to synthesise MoS 2 /CN by a solvothermal method. The results show that under visible-light irradiation, the material exhibits significant photocatalytic H 2 production activity. Modification of CN by MOF-derived MoS 2 increases the light absorption capacity and further improves photogenerated charge separation. The optimal production rate for H 2 evolution was 1695.76 μmol g −1 (4 h). MoS 2 and CN are uniformly dispersed and firmly connected in the catalyst, which is conducive to charge transfer. In addition, the MoS 2 /CN catalyst exhibited better stability for H 2 production. This study provides a reference for the preparation of noble-metal-free sulfide cocatalysts using metal MOFs as self-sacrificing templates.

Fabrication of phosphorus-mediated MoS2 nanosheets on carbon cloth for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Jingyang Tian,Chundi Yang,Ruihua Hao,Funan Li,Zhirui Liu,Wei Chen,Yuancai Lv,Chong Lin

Molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ) as a graphene-like sheet material has attracted wide attention owing to the potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the large-scale application of MoS 2 is still difficult due to the inherent poor conductivity and insufficient active edge sites. Herein, we develop a simple method to grow P-doped MoS 2 nanosheets on carbon cloth for high efficiency HER. The 2D carbon cloth can prevent the stacking of MoS 2 nanosheets and improve the conductivity with the doping of P atoms. As a result, the P–MoS 2 /CC-300 shows the excellent electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 81 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the lower Tafel slope of 98 mV/dec. Furthermore, it also shows the good electrocatalytic durability for 15 h. This work provides an opportunity for the design of excellent and robust MoS 2 -based catalyst via structural engineering and doping method.

Dual roles of MoS2 nanosheets in advanced oxidation Processes: Activating permonosulfate and quenching radicals

Li Li,Qi Han,Li Wang,Bei Liu,Kunkun Wang,Zhongying Wang

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received increasing attention in wastewater treatment attributed to the high efficiency for organic pollutants removal. Our study reported that single layer MoS 2 exhibited greatly efficient PMS activation through one electron transfer and thus showed excellent orange II (OII) degradation performance. Sulfate radical (SO 4 ∙− ) and hydroxyl radical (∙OH) were detected as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the activation reaction system by radical quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy. More importantly, we note that excessive dosage of 1T-dominated MoS 2 had a quenching effect on SO 4 ∙− and ∙OH, which caused the decline of OII degradation efficiency. Compared to 1T-dominated MoS 2 , 2H-MoS 2 nanomaterial was a weaker radical quencher and exhibited better organic dye pollutant degradation performance owing to its better chemical stability and adsorptive property. In addition, aligned stacks of MoS 2 nanosheets were prepared to preserve oxidation surface/edges, which weakened the ROS quenching effect and thus improved OII removal capacity. The dual roles of MoS 2 nanosheets, i.e. activating PMS and quenching free radicals, were systematically studied for the first time. Meanwhile, the protection of oxidation active sites proved to be a feasible way of suppressing ROS quenching effect to improve the degradation performance in PMS-AOPs, and thus providing a new sight for the activator design.

Effect of MoS2 on phenol decomposition in water after high-voltage pulse discharge treatment

Haixia Wu,Ruoyu Liu,Yongjun Sun,Yiyun Wen,Quanfa Zhao,Shaohua Lin,Yong Wang

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) was added to the system after being treated with high-voltage pulse discharge plasma to improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants and reduce energy consumption. The discharge plasma-treated solution contains hydrogen peroxide and metal iron ions, and MoS 2 addition can cause co-catalytic Fenton reaction . The effects of discharge time, initial pH, phenol concentration, MoS 2 dosage, discharge voltage, and gas type on phenol removal and aqueous H 2 O 2 concentration were mainly investigated. Results showed that the addition of MoS 2 after plasma treatment can reduce the plasma treatment time by 70% and maintain or even increase the degradation efficiency of phenol from 40% (after 20 min of discharge plasma) to 92% (after turning off the discharge and dosing with MoS 2 for 30 min). Acidic conditions (pH = 3–4) and oxygen were beneficial to phenol removal. MoS 2 addition greatly improved the catalytic oxidation of discharge plasma. This study provides a promising direction for water treatment based on plasma technology .

PMS activation over MoS2/Co0.75Mo3S3.75 for RhB pollutant oxidation removal in fuel cell system

Xingyan Chen,Lifen Liu

In advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), organic pollutants are oxidized, but getting the most energy out of pollutant in reducing cost of AOPs is still a challenge. In this study, MoS 2 / Co 0.75 Mo 3 S 3.75 composite nano-catalyst with high density catalytic active sites was synthesized by homogeneous and dispersed doping of single Co atoms in MoS 2 by one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared catalyst was coated on stainless steel with silica sol for electrode application under visible light and activation of PMS (peroxymonosulfate) in Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system. The synergy system at pH 6.5, visible light irradiation and 0.06 mM [PMS], was able to rapidly degrade RhB (50 mg·L −1 ) within 10 min and reach 98% degradation within 21 min (kinetic rate constant 0.261 min −1 ). The role of visible light contributes to RhB degradation more than oxidation by just PMS in PFC (Photocatalytic Fuel Cell). The dispersed Co sites have a significant effect of activating PMS, improving catalytic activity and enhancing reaction under closed circuit. The system has good stability, is also applicable to significant removal of tetracycline(TC, 76.35%) and bisphenol A (BPA, 53.76%). In MoS 2 / Co 0.75 Mo 3 S 3.75 -vis/PMS/PFC, species such as •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , h + and 1 O 2 jointly promote the degradation of RhB. This work provides a perspective for further study of two-dimensional metallic sulfide doped with transition metal ions and application of such vis/PMS/PFC system in removing other toxic pollutants .

Dielectric properties and energy storage performance of PVDF-based composites with MoS2@MXene nanofiller

Hou-Qing Wang,Jing-Wen Wang,Xin-Zhu Wang,Xin-Hua Gao,Guo-Chao Zhuang,Jian-Bao Yang,Hua Ren

Hybrid nanofillers designed for polymer dielectric nanocomposites are expected to obtain excellent dielectric energy storage performance by virtue of different morphologies and electrical properties. In this work, the 2D/2D heterostructures of 2D MoS 2 grown on the surface of 2D transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 MXene (MoS 2 @MXene) have been successfully obtained through hydrothermal reaction. MoS 2 @MXene was incorporated into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to form the PVDF based dielectric composites (MoS 2 @MXene/PVDF) through solution casting method. The composite with 3.47 wt% MoS 2 @MXene is very flexible with an elastic modulus of 385 MPa, which is not much different with pure PVDF (357 MPa). The maximum electric displacement at room temperature and an electric field of 400 MV/m is 10.96 μC/cm 2 , moreover the discharged energy density reaches 17.22 J/cm 3 , which is nearly 4.5 times that of pure PVDF (3.83 J/cm 3 at the maximum electric field of 250 MV/m). The dielectric constant of 3.47 wt% MoS 2 @MXene/PVDF at room temperature and 10 3 Hz is 24.3, and the loss is only 0.02. Even though the filler content is increased to 12.51 wt%, the loss is only 0.06, and the dielectric constant of the composite film can reach 145.2. Compared with the blend of PVDF and MXene, the dielectric constant of MXene@MoS 2 /PVDF shows more excellent frequency stability and lower dielectric loss.

(Fe, Ni)S2@MoS2/NiS2 hollow heterostructure nanocubes for high-performance alkaline water electrolysis

Liangyu Tong,Yunpeng Liu,Chenyu Song,Yuqing Zhang,Sanjay S. Latthe,Shanhu Liu,Ruimin Xing

Hollow hybrid heterostructures are regarded to be promising materials as bifunctional electrocatalysts for highly efficient water electrolysis due to their intriguing morphological features and remarkable electrochemical properties . Herein, with FeNi-PBA as both a precursor and morphological template, we demonstrate the rational construct of cost-effective (Fe,Ni)S 2 @MoS 2 /NiS 2 hollow hybrid heterostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts for alkaline overall water splitting. Microstructural analysis shows that the hybrid is a kind of hierarchical heterostructure composed of MoS 2 /NiS 2 nanosheets/nanoparticles in situ grown on hollow (Fe,Ni)S 2 nanocubes with abundant heterointerfaces, which effectively maximizes the electrochemical active sites to the accessible electrolyte ions , leading to the promoted charge transfer. As expected, the hybrid shows remarkable alkaline electrocatalytic performance, such as hydrogen evolution overpotential of 176 mV and oxygen evolution overpotential of 342 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , as well a cell voltage of 1.65 V at 20 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the stability and durability are greatly enhanced under harsh electrochemical conditions. This study opens a new venue for developing earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts with hollow hybrid heterostructures for alkaline water electrolysis in the future.

Fe-Doped 1T/2H Mixed-Phase MoS2/C Nanostructures for N2 Electroreduction into Ammonia

Zhifeng He,Yuchen Jiang,Xin Cui,Zeyi Liu,Xin Meng,Jiafeng Wan,Fangwei Ma

Recently, molybdenum (Mo)-based catalysts have been proved to be effective NRR catalysts due to the high affinity of nitrogen to Mo. The design of a heterostructure and the introduction of defects, such as vacancies and heteroatom doping, are effective means to regulate the microstructure of catalysts and further improve their electrocatalytic N2 into NH3 performance. In this paper, VS-Fe-doped 1T/2H mixed-phase MoS2/C (VS means sulfur vacancies) heterostructure sphere-like nanoflowers with rich sulfur vacancies are prepared through a pectin-assisted hydrothermal reaction, followed by calcination and treatment with NaBH4 solution. VS-Fe-MoS2/C exhibits good electrocatalytic NRR performance with a high ammonia yield rate of 17.8 ± 0.7 μg h–1 mg–1 at −0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) and a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 9.2% at −0.3 V (vs RHE) under ambient conditions. Introducing sulfur vacancies, iron doping, and preparing 2H-phase MoS2 have greatly improved the performance of electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia.

N-doped carbon anchored CoS2/MoS2 nanosheets as efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Zhou Xingwei,Zhang Wei,Zhang Zunhao,Wang Zizhun,Zou Xu,Li Dabing,Zheng Weitao

The oriented two-dimensional porous nitrogen-doped carbon embedded with CoS 2 and MoS 2 nanosheets is a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. The hierarchical structure ensures fast mass transfer capacity in improving the electrocatalytic activity. And the greatly increased specific surface area is beneficial to expose more electrocatalytically active atoms. For oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) tests in 1 mol/L KOH solution, only 194 and 140 mV overpotential are required to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , respectively. Our research provides an effective strategy for synergizing the individual components in nanostructures for a wide range of electrocatalytic reactions. Graphical Abstract

High-pressure synthesis and performance analysis of WC-cBN-MoS2 self-lubricating ceramic composites

Jiakun Wu,Haikuo Wang,Zhicai Zhang,Chao Wang,Zhiqiang Hou,Shun Wan,Dazhuan Wu,Xiaoping Ouyang

WC-cBN-MoS 2 self-lubricating ceramics were synthesized by using high pressure and high temperature sintering method. An analytical model of the self-lubricating properties has been developed to reveal the interrelationship between mechanical and self-lubricating properties. The influence of mechanical and self-lubricating properties of ceramics on the wear rate were analyzed. Self-lubricating performance optimization criterion are proposed accordingly. It was found that MoC, WS 2 can be formed during sintering, which can ensure self-lubricating and low temperature sintering properties. Adhesive wear is the main wear mechanism, the extent of which varies with the content of self-lubricating components. The high modulus of elasticity is the main reason for the excellent self-lubricating and mechanical properties of composites. The well-sintered WC-cBN-MoS 2 bulks present an excellent self-lubricating property with a hardness of 26.3 GPa and fracture toughness of 10.5 MPa·m 1/2 , which is improved at least by 52% and 46% respectively compared with the traditional self-lubricating ceramics.

Solar-Assisted Superhydrophobic MoS2/PDMS/MS Sponge for the Efficient Cleanup of Viscous Oil

Zhuobin Wu,Ke Zheng,Zuqin Cheng,Shaoqi Zhou

Industrialization releases many high-viscosity oil pollutants into the environment, requiring a hydrophobic recyclable oil-absorbing material. Therefore, a self-heating and superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS) by connecting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated with functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets on a three-dimensional microstructure of a commercial MS (MoS2/PDMS/MS) via a simple and low-cost dip-coating method. The prepared sponge showed a water contact angle of 151.8°, indicating that the modified sponge exhibited superhydrophobicity. Due to the addition of MoS2, the modified sponge can convert light into heat, and its surface could be heated to 59.7 °C within 30 s. Because of the excellent MoS2/PDMS/MS photothermal performance, the sponge could decrease the viscosity of the high-viscosity oil, absorbing the high-viscosity oil efficiently. After simultaneous thermal analysis and repeated compression tests, the modified sponge exhibited high thermochemical stability, mechanical property, and reusability. This superhydrophobic multifunctional sponge shows excellent potential for high-viscosity oil absorption.

Li+ additive accelerated structural transformation of MoS2 cathodes for performance-enhancing rechargeable Mg2+ batteries

Bofei Li,Zhao Li,Haoyuan Chen,Xu Zhang,Shuaijin Wu,Hao Xu,Yingying Yao,Yinghui Li,Xiaolong Li,Zhigang Hu,Richard M. Laine,Jianxin Zou,Kemin Zhang

Rechargeable magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) with intercalation materials as the cathode are found to offer better performance in Li + based electrolytes. Herein, we compare the electrochemical performance of MIBs using all-phenyl complex (APC) electrolytes before and after adding Li +  additives with layered MoS 2 cathodes. We coincidentally describe the lithiation mechanism that leads to a phase transition whereby Li +  additives accelerate a MoS 2 structural transformation from 2H to 1T which accounts for the superior battery performance (150 mAh/g, around two times the capacity of that without Li + additives). In this process, MoS 2 is partly exfoliated into single-layer nanosheets during cycle as evidenced by operando electrochemical synchrotron X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Accordingly, electrochemical cells with pre-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets (liquid phase exfoliation) require fewer activation cycles (50 cycles, a quart of the cycles that using pristine MoS 2 ) in APC electrolyte and better rate performance. Our work thus provides new insight in designing high-performance rechargeable MIBs by optimizing the intercalation cathodes using Li + additives.
