An Electrochemical Immunobiosensor Based on PVA/PDA/PEDOT Conductive Antifouling Coating for Direct Detection of CNS Injury Biomarker in Forensic Clinical Sample

Ziling Guo,Sibo Wang,Leihan Wang,Jing Wang,Menghan Li,Yumei Li,Sumin Liu,Dan Liu,Chenghong Gu,Haiping Wu,Xiaolin Yu,Ying Zhu

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) has been recognized as an emerging sensitive marker of central nervous system (CNS) injury. However, there are still few reports of rapid, sensitive, and specific biosensing techniques that can be directly applied to GFAP detection in complex biomatrix samples. In this study, we propose to construct an electrochemical immunosensor based on a ternary polymer nanocoating of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), poly(dopamine) (PDA), and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) that combines high-performance antifouling and electrical conductivity, which could be utilized for the direct and rapid analysis of GFAP in complex forensic clinical samples. PDA and PVA possess abundant hydrophilic groups, which may form a stable hydration layer on the surface of the coating to resist the non-specific adsorption of complex biological substrates, and PDA also confers a stable interfacial adhesion ability. In addition, PEDOT is doped in the coating through hydrogen bonding and physical entanglement effects to fulfill the high electrical conductivity, which overcomes the limitation of high resistance of traditional antifouling coatings. With the above elaborate design, the PPP coating-based electrochemical immunosensor exhibited superior anti-adsorption ability in biological samples such as hemolysis, serum, and urine, and provided a linear response to GFAP in the range of 1 ng mL -1 to 1000 ng mL -1 , with the limit of detection of 0.5521 ng mL -1 . Encouragingly, the electrochemical immunosensor has been successfully applied to actual forensic clinical samples and accurately screened patients with central nervous system injury with high GFAP expression. Therefore, this novel electrochemical immunobiosensor is expected to provide a powerful technical support for the rapid identification of CNS injury in forensic clinics.

Mechanical and Tribological Study of PVA–pMPDSAH Double-Network Hydrogel Prepared by Ultraviolet Irradiation and Freeze–Thaw Methods for Bionic Articular Cartilage

Chen Junyue,Cui Lingling,Yan Chengqi,Xiong Dangsheng

Hydrogel has been widely used in the research of bionic articular cartilage due to their similarity in structure and functional properties to natural articular cartilage. In this research, polyvinyl alcohol and betaine monomer were used as raw materials to prepare a high-strength double-network hydrogel by a combination of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and freeze–thaw methods. The structure of samples was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, and the morphology of the samples was characterized by scanning electron microscope and three-dimensional white light interferometer. In addition, we also studied the swelling ratio, water content, mechanical properties and tribological properties of the samples. We found that the addition of betaine monomer and the UV irradiation time had a positive effect on the mechanical properties and tribological properties of the samples.

Preparation and properties of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films by incorporation of γ- aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15) as filler

Yangyang Zhao,Longshan Cheng,Liwei Wu,Shuang Cheng,Zhixiong Huang,Yanbing Wang

In this work, a mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was synthesized using a hydrothermal method and the surface of the SBA-15 was further modified by utilizing the organosilane compound γ- aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES); FT-IR testing confirmed the successful grafting of these organic groups onto the surface of the SBA-15, the result being the AP-S. Composite films were subsequently prepared through a casting method, with SBA-15 and AP-S serving as the inorganic filler particles, and PVA acting as the matrix material. These films were characterized by tensile texts, dynamic mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and dielectric measurements. The results showed that the tensile modulus, loss modulus and dielectric properties of the modified AP-S/PVA composite films were improved compared with those of SBA-15/PVA, with the tensile strength being the largest at 145.25 MPa when the AP-S content was 2%. This result combined with the SEM analysis, shows that the incorporation of SBA-15 modified by APTES into PVA films can effectively improve the dispersion of SBA-15 in the PVA films, which can also explain the performance enhancement.

Nano-fiber/net structured PVA membrane: Effects of formic acid as solvent and crosslinking agent on solution properties and membrane morphological structures

Na Wang,Yang Si,Jianyong Yu,Hao Fong,Bin Ding

A technique of electro-spinning/netting (ESN) has been investigated to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibrous membrane with unique morphological structure of nano-fiber/net (NFN). The prepared NFN membrane consists of both common electrospun nanofibers (with diameters in hundreds of nanometers) and two-dimensional nano-nets (with nanofibril diameters smaller than 50   nm). It is revealed that formic acid has dual effects ( i.e. , as solvent and crosslinking agent) on solution properties and membrane morphological structures, and systematic analyses on rheological properties of three different 10   wt% PVA solutions with solvents being water, formic acid, and their 1/1 (wt./wt.) mixture have been conducted. Results indicate that the molecular interactions (particularly hydrogen bonding) among water, formic acid, and PVA macromolecular chains, as well as the acetal formation ( i.e. , chemical crosslinking), have significant influences on macromolecular conformation, solution rheological properties, and morphological structure of membranes. The acetal formation, which leads to improved tensile strength of PVA NFN membrane, has been verified by FT-IR and DSC . Additionally, the PVA NFN membrane has been assembled into a gravity-driven filtration device; and the membrane exhibits high rejection ratio (>   99%) for polystyrene microspheres (with diameters of ~   0.2   μm) and high water flux (3773   L/m 2   ∙   h) under the pressure of 40   kPa.

Visible-light-excited long-lived organic room-temperature phosphorescence of phenanthroline derivatives in PVA matrix by H-bonding interaction for security applications

W. Sun,B. Shi,Z. Xia,C. Lü

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are very attractive, but there is still a challenge to achieve RTP for their practical applications under visible light excitation (λ > 400 nm) because of the implement for the most organic RTP is under ultraviolet light. Herein, a simple tactics for inhibiting the vibrational dissipation of three amorphous phenanthroline derivatives by doping them into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix was utilized to afford visible-light excitation RTP. By using this method, on account of the mutual H-bonding and confinement effect with PVA matrix, a series of organic RTP materials with blue-green phosphorescence emission were obtained under visible-light excitation. The afterglow colors of RTP materials can be adjusted by co-doping the available fluorescence dyes (RhB or Rh6G) into the PVA films through a triplet-to-singlet Förster resonance energy transfer. However, the H-bonding is easily broken by water molecules resulting in the RTP phenomenon disappears. Hence, Aphen-epoxy resin composite system was constructed to overcome this drawback. It is shown that the composite still has good phosphorescence properties after soaking in water for 7 days. The superior RTP of the amorphous phenanthroline derivatives in processable polymer matrices endows these materials with a highly potential for the night warning clothing coating and information encryption.

Preparation of electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane with high efficiency removal for PM2.5 and excellent heat resistance

Yi Wang,Yu Miao,Yuxin Cai,Enfu Wang,YiPeng Liang,Jinhuan Zhong,Wenbiao Zhang,Jingda Huang

Development of water-soluble polymer air filtration materials attracts considerable attentions due to their environmentally friendly performance and high efficiency, but the balance of mechanical strength, efficiency and pressure drop still is a severe challenge. Focusing on this issue, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bamboo activated carbon (BAC) and sodium lignosulfonate (Ls) were combined to construct an electrospinning system with two filtration functions. In the PVA@Ls@BAC system, the 3D network constructed by the electrospun PVA based nanofibrous could effectively intercept PM2.5, and the introduced Ls enhanced the mechanical strength of PVA nanofibrous due to its good rigidity. In addition, the added negatively charged BAC facilitated the electrostatic adsorption of PM2.5 while also improved the heat resistance of the system. Moreover, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was introduced to enhance the water resistance of the system. The resulting electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane exhibited excellent air filtration performance (98.67%), water repellency (123.7° of WCA), and reusable performance, as well as having good mechanical property and the tensile fracture strain reaching 112%. Because of its good performance and simple preparation process, the electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane has great application space. Graphical

A Novel Multifunctional Crosslinking PVA/CMCS Hydrogel Containing Cyclic Peptide Actinomycin X2 and PA@Fe with Excellent Antibacterial and Commendable Mechanical Properties

Fengyun Chen,Ansar Javeed,Qiuyu Zeng,Quan Zhang,Bingnan Han

Bacterial infected environments and resulting bacterial infections have been threatening the human health globally. Due to increased bacterial resistance caused by improper and excessive use of antibiotics, antibacterial biomaterials are being developed as alternatives to antibiotics in some cases. Herein, an advanced multifunctional hydrogel with excellent antibacterial properties, enhanced mechanical properties, biocompatibility and self-healing performance, was designed through freezing-thawing method. This hydrogel network is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), protocatechualdehyde (PA), ferric iron (Fe) and an antimicrobial cyclic peptide actinomycin X2 (Ac.X2). The double dynamic bonds among protocatechualdehyde (PA), ferric iron (Fe) and carboxymethyl chitosan containing coordinate bond (catechol-Fe) as well as dynamic Schiff base bonds and hydrogen bonds endowed the hydrogel with enhanced mechanical properties. Successful formation of hydrogel was confirmed through ATR-IR and XRD, and structural evaluation through SEM analysis, whereas mechanical properties were tested with electromechanical universal testing machine. The resulting PVA/CMCS/Ac.X2/PA@Fe (PCXPA) hydrogel has favorable biocompatibility and excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against both S. aureus (95.3 %) and E. coli (90.2 %) compared with free-soluble Ac.X2, which exhibited subpar performance against E. coli reported in our previous studies. This work provides a new insight on preparing multifunctional hydrogels containing antimicrobial peptides as antibacterial material. Graphical

Ultralight, Heat-Insulated, and Tough PVA Hydrogel Hybridized with SiO2@cellulose Nanoclaws Aerogel via the Synergy of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Interfacial Interactions

Yuqi Xie,Zhaohui Li,Yawen Zhang,Yunjie Lu,Jianming Zhang,Lu Zong

Lightweight porous hydrogels provide a worldwide scope for functional soft mateirals. However, most porous hydrogels have weak mechanical strength, high density (>1 g cm −3 ), and high heat absorption due to weak interfacial interactions and high solvent fill rates, which severely limit their application in wearable soft-electronic devices. Herein, an effective hybrid hydrogel-aerogel strategy to assemble ultralight, heat-insulated, and tough polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/SiO 2 @cellulose nanoclaws (CNCWs) hydrogels (PSCG) via strong interfacial interactions with hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction is demonstrated. The resultant PSCG has an interesting hierarchical porous structure from bubble template (≈100 µm), PVA hydrogels networks introduced by ice crystals (≈10 µm), and hybrid SiO 2 aerogels (<50 nm), respectively. PSCG shows unprecedented low density (0.27 g cm −3 ), high tensile strength (1.6 MPa) & compressive strength (1.5 MPa), excellent heat-insulated ability, and strain-sensitive conductivity. This lightweight porous and tough hydrogel with an ingenious design provides a new way for wearable soft-electronic devices.

P(MA-AMPS)/PVA@SiO2 hybrid hydrogel coated stainless steel mesh for effective separation of stabilized oil-in-water emulsions under gravity

Shuaiyan Ji,Wei Li,Ningning Lv,Xiaoting Chen

The superhydrophilic/underwater superhydrophobic membrane offers unique advantages in effectively separating oily wastewater. However, the development of membrane materials that can efficiently separate emulsions only under gravity is still a challenge. A crosslinked network copolymer P(MA-AMPS) was synthesized by radical polymerization of N, n-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), methacrylamide (MA) and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) initiated by potassium persulfate. Then polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nano-SiO 2 were inserted to the crosslinked polymer system in order to prepare a P(MA-AMPS)/PVA@SiO 2 hybrid hydrogel. The hybrid hydrogel can be sprayed on the surface of stainless steel mesh (SSM) by a simple spraying method, so as to achieve superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. The oil-water emulsion permeation flux reached more than 352.94 L·m −2 ·h −1 , while xhibiting a more than 99.5 % separation efficiency under gravity. The anti-fouling tests demonstrated that the membrane exhibited outstanding anti-fouling performance. Moreover, the combination of stable semi-interpenetrating networks and nanoparticles made the membrane exhibit excellent stability and durable separation ability in complex physicochemical environments.

A simple PVA/Cu(OAc)2 thermogel with an inherent near-infrared light response and its applications in smart windows and photoresistors

Hao Zhang,Jie Hao,Xia Yu,Jianqiao Wu,Jiawei Li,Min-Hui Li,Jun Hu

Thermogels are one kind of smart materials, characterized by the in situ sol–gel transition upon temperature increase. Currently, most of them are constructed using thermosensitive polymers, which often require tedious chemical synthesis. Besides, it is difficult to precisely control the gel properties through remote stimuli like near-infrared (NIR) light. In this work, we have prepared a thermogel with inherent NIR photothermal responsive features by simply mixing hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with Cu(OAc)2 in deionized water. Without the incorporation of extra reagents and the chemical modification of PVA, the PVA/Cu(OAc)2 thermogel exhibited high photothermal conversion efficiency and reversible sol–gel transition behavior. Because of the inherent NIR absorption and optical conversion abilities, the PVA/Cu(OAc)2 thermogel can be used as a smart window material to effectively absorb sunlight and prevent the rise of indoor temperature. In addition, its photosensitive conductivity also gave it the potential to act as a photoresistor. As far as we know, this is the first PVA-tailored thermogel with an inherent NIR light response, which provides an innovative strategy to construct smart materials.

PVA Hydrogel Functionalization via PET-RAFT Grafting with Glycidyl Methacrylate and Immobilization with 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl Ammonium Chloride Chitosan via Ring-Open Reaction

Zhou Jinsheng,Lin Yanming,Ye Lin,Wang Ling,Zhou Li,Hu Huiyuan,Zhang Qilong,Yang Hui,Luo Zhongkuan

To solve the biofouling problem of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel as the artificial cornea, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel via a new method of photoinduced electron transfer—reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization and ring-open reaction. Both attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that GMA and HACC were successfully grafted on the surface of PVA hydrogel. A series of experiments to test the hydrophilicity of PVA hydrogel showed that it became hydrophobic due to the introduction of hydrophobic groups after grafting with GMA and HACC. In addition, cytotoxicity in vitro of PVA-g-p(GMA-HACC) hydrogel could be considered as not cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5: 2009. The anti-fouling property of hydrogel decreased after grafting with GMA due to the hydrophobic surface, while increased after grafting with HACC due to the steric repulsion of p(GMA-HACC) polymer brush. It’s no doubt that PET-RAFT was a feasible and reliable surface modification method which could be used in many biomolecules due to the excellent advantages.

Fabricating dual-responsive shape memory PVA-based composites via reactive melt-mixing by skillfully utilizing excellent flowability and crosslinking heat of polyethylene

Yue Liu,Qinglong Zhang,Jiachun Feng

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based dual-stimuli responsive shape memory composites were fabricated via a feasible reactive melt mixing with certain content of polyethylene (PE) and crosslinker dicumyl peroxide (DCP). It is found that PE plays many important roles in this method. Firstly, the melting processability of PVA can be improved markedly by skillfully utilizing the excellent flowability and crosslinking heat of PE. Secondly, the PVA composites achieve excellent water/heat dual-induced shape memory property by utilizing PE as fixing domain and heat responsive switching domain and utilizing PVA as water responsive switching domain meanwhile. The fixing ratio is nearly 100% and recovery ratio can reach 90% for both water and heat responsive shape memory. This artful fabricating method achieved the aim of improving the melting processability of PVA and endowing the composites dual-responsive shape memory property simultaneously only by utilizing PE, which is interesting and promising for the development of PVA in the industry application. It shows considerable prospect for PVA composites and their industry application.
