Robust Zwitterionic Poly(imidazolium)-Coated PVDF Membrane for Oily Water Treatment with Antibacterial and Anti-Biofouling Performances

Junqi Ning,Yuting Hu,Mengyu Xing,Longhai Liu,Jia Zheng,Jianghua Li

Membrane fouling remains a major challenge during oily wastewater purification, resulting in reduced water flux and separation efficiency. Zwitterionic polymers have been introduced to the PVDF membrane and shown their fouling resistance ability. However, most current zwitterions lack bactericidal effects and tend to be fouled by the attachment of bacteria and biofilm formation in long-term service. Herein, a synthetic zwitterionic poly(imidazolium), poly(ZIM-co-VTS), was introduced onto the PVDF membrane by co-assembly with polydopamine (PDA) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica source. The in situ covalent bond can be formed between the catechol from PDA and silanol groups from both TEOS and imidazole-based polymers. Further, Fe3+ cross-linking contributes to the robust chemical stability of modified PVDF. The as-prepared coating exhibits superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity under harsh conditions (pH = 1 and 13), remaining high separation efficiency (>99%) toward various surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions without an apparent water flux (>1013 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) decline. More importantly, the cationic imidazolium in poly(ZIM-co-VTS) endues the excellent bacterial killing efficiency toward Staphylococcus aureus (4.5 log10 reduction) and Escherichia coli (4.7 log10 reduction). The zwitterionic poly(imidazolium)-modified PVDF exhibited long-term durability with anti-biofouling properties and was a promising candidate for practical oily wastewater remediation.

Structural and performance variation of PES/PVDF membranes after exposure to the pretreated feed water of CECs

Jun Young Kim,Kang Hoon Lee,Jae Won Lee,Imtiaz Afzal Khan,Jong-Oh Kim

In this study, the removal efficiency of chemicals of emerging concerns (CECs) was evaluated under exposure to various doses of UV/H 2 O 2 -based oxidation processes in combination with membrane filtration for three cleaning cycles. Polyethersulphone (PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials based membranes were used for this study. The chemical cleaning of the membranes was performed by immersion of the membranes into 1 N HCl followed by adding 3000 mg.L −1 NaOCl for 1hr. Degradation and filtration performance was evaluated using Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Membrane fouling analysis for assessing the comparative performance of PES and PVDF membranes was determined by specific fouling and fouling indices evaluation. Membrane characterization results show that the alkynes and carbonyl group formation are due to dehydrofluorination and oxidation of PVDF and PES membranes under the attack of foulants and cleaning chemicals, which resulted in a reduction of fluoride percentage and an increase in sulfur percentage in the PVDF and PES membranes. A decrease in the hydrophilicity of the membranes in underexposed conditions was observed and is consistent with an increase in dose. Degradation results of CECs follow with the highest removal efficiency of chlortetracycline (CTC) followed by atenolol (ATL), acetaminophen (ACT), and caffeine (CAF) degradation due to attack on the aromatic ring and the carbonyl group of CECs by OH exposure. Membrane exposed at 3 mg.L-1 dose of UV/H 2 O 2 -based CECs shows minimum alteration with higher filtration efficiency and lower fouling, particularly in PES membranes.

A simple surface modification method to prepare versatile PVDF electrospun nanofibrous felts for separation, sterilization and degradation

Guoxu He,Menghui Wan,Zhihua Wang,Xi Zhou,Yanbao Zhao,Lei Sun

The discharge of oily effluents from industrial production and crude oil spills at sea result in significant water pollution, posing a major danger to the environment and human health. Due to the tiny droplet size, emulsion separation is a difficult task in the separation and purification of oily wastewater. Polydopamine (PDA) and TiO 2 nanoparticles were coated on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofibrous to increase surface roughness, and then the low surface energy substance octadecylamine (ODA) was grafted. As a result, a superhydrophobic PVDF@PDA/TiO 2 @ODA nanofibrous felts with a water contact angle of 168.1° has been developed. Because of their three-dimensional porous structure, the nanofibrous felts have a porosity of up to 72.9 %. The tensile strength of a series of reinforced PVDF@PDA/TiO 2 @ODA nanofibrous felts reaches 30.06 MPa, which is useful for maintaining the stability of the nanofibrous felts during the pressure separation. The oil and water in the emulsion are entirely separated due to the selective permeability induced by the strong superhydrophobic and superlipophilic properties. The separation efficiency of over 99 % and flow flux of above 1100 L·m −2 ·h −1 are achieved. The performance of the nanofibrous felts in inhibiting bacterial growth was then investigated, and it is found that a significant inhibition circle appeared in the flat dish diffusion method, with a bacteriostasis rate exceeding 99 %. This result demonstrates that PVDF@PDA/TiO 2 @ODA nanofibrous felts have excellent antimicrobial properties. Finally, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy was employed to demonstrate the good catalytic degradation of organic dyes by PVDF@PDA/TiO 2 @ODA nanofibrous felts. PVDF@PDA/TiO 2 @ODA nanofibrous felts have a variety of applications in the deep separation and purification of oily wastewater due to these characteristics.

Synergistic Improvement in γ-Phase Content and Dielectric Properties of PVDF/Deep Eutectic Solvent/Montmorillonite Composite Films

Muhua Yuan,Haijun Wang,Tong Wang,Haibo Yang,Chunlei Yuan

The high dielectric constant of PVDF is very important for its high-performance energy storage dielectrics, but it is more critical to strike a proper balance between high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. In this work, deep eutectic solvent (DES) and montmorillonite (MMT) have been used together to prepare γ-phase PVDF composite films with excellent dielectric properties. It is found that DES significantly induces crystallization of γ-phase and increases the dielectric constant of the composite due to the incremental ion motion. Meanwhile, DES greatly promotes the stripping and dispersion of MMT layers, which in turn inhibits the long-range ion migration and therefore suppresses the dielectric loss of the composite to a very low level. The dielectric constant of PVDF/MMT/DES composite films can increase to 32, while the dielectric loss remains as low as 0.06 at 1 kHz. Moreover, the synergistic effect of MMT/DES also contributes to enhancing the toughness and optical transmittance of composite films.

Hydrophobic sandwich-like PVDF/rGO/PDMS composite membrane with fast electrothermal/photothermal response for crude oil removal

Jiale Zhou,Kunquan Li,Zhuohan Chen,Xiaojing Su,Huali Xie,Lei Yao,Yunhui Wu,Xiaofan Zhang,Lu Chen,Xuting Wu,Wenjian Wu

Functional membranes with electrothermal/photothermal effects are considered an effective method for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. However, the loading of photothermal and electrothermal particles in polymeric membranes with poor compatibility will deteriorate the membrane performance, leading to the unstable photothermal/electrothermal effects. Therefore, we prepared a hydrophobic sandwich structure polyvinylidene fluoride/reduced graphene oxide/polydimethylsiloxane (PVDF/rGO/PDMS) composite membrane using a two-step electrospinning process, which improved the binding force between the photothermal/electrothermal particles and the matrix with the composite membrane exhibiting super fast electric heating and photothermal effect. The temperature of the composite membrane surface rapidly reached to 162.5 °C within 30 s at 25 V. In addition, the addition of graphene (GO) improved the mechanical properties of the composite membrane. Meantime, the composite membrane possessed stable hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, which was beneficial for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. Owing to the controllable pore structure and special wetting behavior, the water-in-oil emulsion was successfully separated. Importantly, the separation rates of the water/crude oil mixtures under the electrothermal effect was 2340 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Thus, this study provides a new method for preparing hydrophobic sandwich-like PVDF/rGO/PDMS composite membrane with electrothermal/photothermal effects, which has significant potential for engineering applications in high-viscosity crude oil removal and water-in-oil emulsion separation.

3D printing of PVDF-based piezoelectric nanogenerator from programmable metamaterial design: Promising strategy for flexible electronic skin

Haoran Pei,Jingjing Jing,Yinghong Chen,Jiajun Guo,Ning Chen

The high-performance piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) with good flexibility, tunability and sensitivity is desirable for the next-generation of wearable electronics . However, the 3D printing of unique architectures and arbitrary shapes could endow the conformal electronic sensors with excellent flexibility and functionality. In this work, the self-poled PENG were successfully fabricated by incorporating the oriented ionic salt-montmorillonite (IS-MMT) co-fillers into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix and then performing 3D printing . This hence could give the 3D printed PENG the locked interfacial piezoelectric polarization. More importantly, the self-adaptive conformal PENG based on auxetic metamaterial has also been developed, which is beyond the practicability of the traditional 2D PENG. The effect of various architectures of the metamaterial on the mechanical and piezoelectric responses was particularly discussed. The tailoring of the 3D printed cell with metamaterial of serpentine geometries shows the appealing advantages of high sensitivity to structure variation, thus being beneficial for easier regulation of piezoelectric output. When mounted on the joints as a wearable healthcare monitoring device, this 3D printed PENG could accurately detect the movement of muscles, demonstrating its potential in motion tracking and sign-language interpretation. Obviously, this work could provide a new idea for design and fabrication of programmable wearable electronics.

PVDF/PLA electrospun fiber membrane impregnated with metal nanoparticles for emulsion separation, surface antimicrobial, and antifouling activities

Xiang Xin,Chen DongYun,Li NaJun,Xu QingFeng,Li Hua,He JingHui,Lu JianMei

Although many superwetting materials have been designed for the treatment of oil-containing wastewater, separation strategies for oil-in-water systems containing bacteria have rarely been reported. Herein, poly(vinylidene difluoride)- and poly(lactic acid)-blended fibrous membranes loaded with silver and copper oxide nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a two-step method of electrostatic spinning and liquid-phase synthesis. The product membrane showed excellent super-oleophilic properties in air and hydrophobicity under oil. It could separate water-in-oil emulsion systems containing surfactants with an efficiency above 90%. More importantly, the nanoparticle-loaded fibers were characterized by material degradability and slowly released ions. The fibers exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against both gram-positive and -negative bacteria. This work provides a feasible strategy for water-in-oil emulsion separation and bacterial treatment of wastewater.

P(AMPS-co-PEGMA)-doped and PVDF-HFP-enhanced stretchable polymer electrolytes: application as flexible electrochromic devices

Dong Wang,Pengxuan Zheng,Zhiwei Yu,Xiangwei Wang,Tingxi Li

Polymer electrolytes are being considered as an effective solution for electrochemical devices to replace currently used organic liquid electrolytes due to their excellent mechanical properties and security. Herein, we prepared stretchable polymer electrolytes (SPEs) doped with poly[(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid)- co -poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate] (P(AMPS- co -PEGMA)) and enhanced with poly[(vinylidene fluoride)- co -hexafluoropropylene] (PVDF-HFP), through UV in situ polymerization. The SPEs showed good mechanical performance with an elongation of more than 40% and ionic conductivity reaching the order of 10 −3 S cm −1 . In terms of application, flexible electrochromic devices based on the UV in situ -prepared SPEs were assembled, the color switching performance being still good even after 400 switching cycles and 1000 bending cycles, which indicated that the SPEs could have excellent prospects in application for flexible devices. © 2023 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Facile preparation of grass-like structured NiCo-LDH/PVDF composite membrane for efficient oil–water emulsion separation

Jiuyun Cui,Zhiping Zhou,Atian Xie,Qianqian Wang,Siwei Liu,Jihui Lang,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan,Jiangdong Dai

Development of antifouling membrane to separate oil–water emulsions by low energy consumption approach is an urgent demand. Herein, we report for the first time a grass-like structured composite membrane from array growth of nickel cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) onto the polydopamine modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface via simple hydrothermal strategy. The surface morphology of as-prepared membrane has controlled by hydrothermal time. The obtained NiCo-LDH/PVDF composite membrane exhibits superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity for separating both surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized oil–water emulsions by capillary effect under the driving of gravity. Moreover, with the advantages of antifouling performance, the membrane displays outstanding cyclic performance for long-term application, which is promising for practical oily wastewater treatment .

Towards suppressing dielectric loss of GO/PVDF nanocomposites with TA-Fe coordination complexes as an interface layer

Ying Gong,Wenying Zhou,Zijun Wang,Li Xu,Yujia Kou,Huiwu Cai,Xiangrong Liu,Qingguo Chen,Zhi-Min Dang

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with surface modification by Tannic and Fe coordination complexes (TA-Fe) were incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare high constant but low loss polymer nanocomposites , and the effect of TA-Fe interlayer on dielectric properties of the GO@TA-Fe/PVDF nanocomposites was investigated. The results indicate that the dosage, mixing ratio, and reaction time of TA-Fe complexes have obvious influences on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. Furthermore, the TA-Fe interlayer significantly influences the electrical properties of GO@TA-Fe nanoparticles and their PVDF composites, and the GO@TA-Fe/PVDF composites exhibit superior dielectric properties compared with raw GO/PVDF. Dielectric losses of the GO@TA-Fe/PVDF are significantly suppressed to a rather low level owing to the presence of TA-Fe layer, which serves as an interlayer between the GO sheets, thus preventing them from direct contacting with each other. Additionally, the dynamic dielectric relaxation of the GO/PVDF and GO@TA-Fe/PVDF nanocomposites was investigated in terms of temperature.

Double-layer structured PVDF nanocomposite film designed for flexible nanogenerator exhibiting enhanced piezoelectric output and mechanical property

Penghao Hu,Lili Yan,Chaoxian Zhao,Yangyang Zhang,Jin Niu

PVDF-based nanocomposite films are promising in fabrication flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators for self-powered portable devices. In this work, a double-layered heterostructure was designed and the PVDF nanocomposite films contained with barium titanate nanoparticles were prepared by solution spin coating . The nanofillers were concentrated distributed in one layer of half the film, and the remaining half was neat PVDF layer. The double-layered BT/PVDF films were characterized comparatively with their counterpart of single-layer films. Although containing with less content of BT nanoparticles and lower proportion of β-phase in polymer, the piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) devices fabricated by double-layered films represent higher piezoelectric outputs in mechanical-to-electric conversion measurement. The charges accumulated at the additional interlayer interface between BT/PVDF layer and PVDF layer contributes much to enhancing electric capacity of the film. Benefited from good interfacial adhesion and better flexibility, the mechanical property and cyclic endurance are also improved. The double-layer film contained with 20 vol fractions (vol%) BTNPs represent excellent comprehensive performance of 6.7 V in output voltage, 2.4 μA in output current, and good stability changed within 3% in more than one thousand circles. The double-layer constructure is promising in nanocomposite films to develop PENGs for self-powered devices.

Core-shell structured Al/PVDF nanocomposites with high dielectric permittivity but low loss and enhanced thermal conductivity

Ying Gong,Wenying Zhou,Xuezhen Sui,Yujia Kou,Li Xu,Yue Duan,Fuxin Chen,Ying Li,Xiangrong Liu,Huiwu Cai,Qingguo Chen,Zhi-Min Dang

Surface modification of core-shell structured Al (Al@Al 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles was performed using γ -(Aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APS) and dopamine (DA), respectively, and the microstructures, dielectric properties and thermal conductivities of the Al/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites were investigated. Both DA and APS enhance the interfacial bonding strength between the fillers and the matrix, leading to homogeneous dispersion of Al nanoparticles in PVDF matrix. Compared with raw Al nanoparticles, surface-treated Al/PVDF exhibit much higher dielectric permittivity due to the enhanced interfacial interactions between the two components, whereas, the dielectric loss and electric conductivity of the nanocomposites still remain at rather low levels owing to the insulating alumina shell preventing effectively core Al from direct contact. The dynamic dielectric properties results reveal that dielectric constant and loss increase with temperature due to the gradually enhanced mobility of molecular chain segments of PVDF for the raw Al/PVDF and treated Al/PVDF nanocomposites. Additionally, the PVDF nanocomposites with Al treated with APS and DA show enhanced thermal conductivities compared with raw Al/PVDF under the same filler loading because of reduced thermal interfacial resistance promoting phonon transfer across the interfaces.
