To enhance Pb(II) and Cd(II) elimination, new composites (FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH) were fabricated by loading biochar with Fe-Ni nanoparticles and functionalizing biochar by amination/hydroxylation in the study. The maximum sorption capacities of both adsorbents toward Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 217.09/209.36 mg/g and 242.15/229.52 mg/g, respectively, which were 4.30–4.79 times higher than those of the raw biochar. The significantly enhanced adsorption capacity could be attributed to the increased O/N-containing groups and Fe-Ni nanoparticles on the adsorbent surface. The introduction of Fe-Ni nanoparticles and O/N-containing groups promoted the complexation and electrostatic interactions and made them playing major roles in the adsorption. Besides, ions exchange and physical adsorption played non-negligible roles in the adsorption process. Additionally, the both adsorbents exhibited favorable anti-interference ability and cycling stability. Taken together, the study revealed that the new biochar composites of FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH could be used as a reusable magnetic adsorbents with promising prospect in current practice for the effective remediation of heavy metals-bearing wastewater. The study not only provided a feasible design, synthesis and optimization strategy of biochar for heavy metals contaminants removal, but also realized the sustainable utilization of waste.

The addition of carbon or carbon composite materials to the negative plate of lead-acid battery could effectively improve the battery electrochemical performance. Herein, a novel Pb@C nanocomposites are in-situ prepared by pyrolysis lead acetate impregnated glucose gel at nitrogen atmosphere. While the Pb@C nanocomposites is used as the additive adding in the negative active materials (NAM) of lead-acid batteries, which can great enhance the utilization of NAM. The negative plate, containing 1 wt.% Pb@C, owns the high affinity between the NAM and Pb@C material, which shows the best cycle-life (8921 cycles) performance on high-rate partial-state-of-charge (HRPSoC) and the highest of initial discharge specific capacity (165.1 mAh g −1 ). Moreover, the lower polarizability and more stable rate capability of the lead-acid cells contain Pb@C compare with blank cell. Besides, accelerate the diffusion of electrolyte and PbSO 4 dissolution, due to the Pb@C materials form porous-skeleton with NAM in the negative plate. In summary, the Pb@C nanocomposites have potential to be used to enhance the specific capacity and HRPSoC cycle-life of lead-acid batteries.

A cost-effective and eco-friendly engineering method to improve biochar’s physicochemical and sorption performance is critical in various environmental applications. In this study, micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous biochars derived from cow bone meal pyrolyzed at different temperatures and were engineered with the assistance of a ball-milling technique. The ball-milled bone biochars were natural composites combined with plant biochars and hydroxyapatite components on the micro-nanoscale. Both the micropore area and the external specific surface area of the bone biochars were significantly improved after ball-milling. The sorption capacities for heavy metal ions were heavy metal ions were MBC-600 > MBC-450 > BC-600 > MBC-300 > BC-450 > BC-300, consistent with the variation tendency in the specific surface areas of the bone biochars. The adsorption capacities of MBC-600 for Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) were 165.77, 287.58 and 558.88 mg/g, respectively (T 298K, pH 5.0), representing increases of 93.91.%, 75.56% and 64.61% compared with the un-milled preparation. Surface complexation, cation exchange, chemical precipitation, electrostatic interaction and cation-π bonding were responsible for the removal of heavy metal ions by bone biochar materials. Taken together, the results show that micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous bone biochar prepared using ball-milling technology is a promising material for the remediation of heavy metals-bearing aquatic environments.

Polydopamine-Functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-GO) was used to form Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan/PDA-GO (PVA/CS/PDA-GO) hydrogels. FTIR, TGA and SEM investigation showed that PDA had been successfully loaded on graphene oxide nanosheets. Adsorption of metal ions onto the novel PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads with variations in pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature had been investigated. Adsorption data were well accurately described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model at the optimum pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacities of the PVA/CS/PDA-GO were 210.94 mg·g −1 , 236.20 mg·g −1 and 214.98 mg·g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions with 40 C, respectively. Meanwhile, desorption efficiency and reusability of the adsorbents were assessed on basis of six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly method to obtain the PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads, which really would be a potential recyclable adsorbent for removal of hazardous metal ions in waste water.

We report a label-free ultrasensitive and selective strategy for Pb(II) assay by a multifunctional DNA probe (MDP)-mediated rolling-circle amplified synthesis of the G-quadruplexes. The MDP acted as a target recognition probe, a catalytic DNAzyme and a primer of rolling-circle amplification (RCA). The presence of Pb(II) can induce the conformational switching of the MDP, resulting in the cleavage of the S-DNA in the MDP to release an E-DNA. The released E-DNA then initiated a RCA reaction with a reasonably devised padlock DNA template to produce an accumulated amount of repeated sequences. The RCA product in the present work was designed as a G-rich sequence, which could fold into thousands of G-quadruplex units. The G-quadruplex formed by RCA can specifically bind to NMM to result in an amplified fluorescence signal. Through these cascade amplifications, Pb(II) ions can be detected at as low as 94.29 pM, which is much lower than those reported in related literature. We expect that this amplification strategy might be helpful in the design of a highly sensitive analytical platform for wide application in environmental and biomedical fields.

The development of an uncomplicated, fast and low-price method for heavy metal ion detection is essential for environmental detection and pollution control. In this research, an innovative type of electrochemical detection sensor was realized by using a kind of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A). The results indicated that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the sample solution can be detected quickly and simultaneously in the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) mode. The test results can reveal whether the concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater is up to standard. The optimization of multiple experimental parameters including the amount of modification, pH value, deposition time and deposition potential was studied and accomplished. Under the best experimental conditions, the peak value of the voltammetry current increased linearly with the concentration. Within this range, the peak current value and concentration have a very good linear relationship with increasing concentrations of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the ranges of 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, 0.1–1.0 mg L−1 and 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, respectively. And the limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 3.0 μg L−1 for Cu(II), 4.0 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 2.5 μg L−1 for Pb(II), which are lower than those obtained at the unmodified electrodes. Most importantly, the modified electrode was successfully applied in the determination of heavy metals in river water. This innovative electrochemical detection sensor shows high sensitivity, good stability and reproducibility.

Multilayered reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was functionalized with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. Raman spectroscopy showed plasma treatment not to substantially alter the chemical structure of rGO and that a wide range of functional nitrogen groups is evenly incorporated into the carbon lattice. The amino-modified rGO was used to design an electrochemical biosensor in which a DNAzyme, substrate DNA and Pb(II) and Hg(II) binding DNA were immobilized on the amino-rGO placed on a gold electrode. The high concentration of amino groups and the rough surface of the rGO favor DNA immobilization. Heavy metal ions are bound to the surface via specific interaction between DNA and the two ions which are detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at a potential of 0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The detection limits for Pb(II) and Hg(II) are as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM, respectively, and the analytical ranges extend from 0.01 to 100 nM. The sensor is highly specific and stable and therefore represents a highly promising tool for use in environmental monitoring.
A nanofilm of reduced graphene oxide was first modified with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. A special DNA was then anchored to the surface to obtain a biosensor for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Hg(II). The sensor has detection limits as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM and is highly selective.

Uniform well-defined nanostructured BiOBr microspheres have been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG). The heavy metal ion adsorption on the as-synthesized nanostructured BiOBr microspheres was systematically assessed by measuring the residual concentration during the adsorption process using a colorimetric method for Cr(VI) concentration, and an extraction-colorimetric method for Cd(II) and Pb(II) concentrations. The nanostructured BiOBr microspheres showed good removal capacity for heavy metal ions (Cr, Cd, Pb), and excellent adsorption properties for low concentration heavy metal ions, indicating potential applications in water purification. Based on the quick and efficient heavy metal ion removal ability of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres, a continuous filtering-type water purification device was designed and constructed. In using this continuous filtering type water purification device, 1 g of adsorbent can purify about 4900 g of Pb(II) contaminated water, 5900 g of Cd(II) contaminated water, or 21 500 g of Cr(VI) contaminated water having initial concentrations of 200 μg L−1 to successfully attain the World Health Organization standard for drinking water. The good removal capacity can be attributed to the hierarchical nanostructure, which displays a large specific surface area and strong adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Dielectric ceramic capacitors are candidates for a new generation of pulsed power supplies, owing to their superior power density. Nevertheless, low energy storage density and poor working reliability (such as temperature stability and fatigue resistance) have hindered the wide application of dielectric ceramic capacitors. To this end, a new composition-based optimization and process improvement strategy is proposed to build relaxor ferroelectric ceramic systems with weak pinning effect domain structure, which not only ensure the performance of ceramic energy storage, but also take into account the reliability of actual work. In this study, lead-free ceramics with formula 0.75(0.94Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -0.06BaTiO 3 )-0.25CaTiO 3 , prepared by viscous polymer processing, exhibit an extremely high energy storage density, reaching up to 6.62 J/cm 3 under a field strength of 520 kV/cm. In addition, after 10 6 cycles at 200 kV/cm, the efficiency remains at 85.9 %, with the sample's energy storage density exhibits a change rate of only 4 %. Additionally, under 300 kV/cm and across a temperature range of 30–150 °C, the change rate is a mere 1.7 %, which indicates that it has exhibited great fatigue resistance and excellent temperature stability. Therefore, this developed ceramic possesses great potential for practical industrial application as dielectric capacitors.

The detection of heavy metals in tea infusions is important because of the potential health risks associated with their consumption. Existing highly sensitive detection methods pose challenges because they are complicated and time-consuming. In this study, we developed an innovative and simple method using Ag nanoparticles-modified resin (AgNPs-MR) for pre-enrichment prior to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the simultaneous analysis of Cr (III), Cu (II), and Pb (II) in tea infusions. Signal enhancement using AgNPs-MR resulted in amplification with limits of detection of 0.22 μg L −1 for Cr (III), 0.33 μg L −1 for Cu (II), and 1.25 μg L −1 for Pb (II). Quantitative analyses of these ions in infusions of black tea from various brands yielded recoveries ranging from 83.3% to 114.5%. This method is effective as a direct and highly sensitive technique for precisely quantifying trace concentrations of heavy metals in tea infusions.

The escalating contamination of water resources by toxic heavy metals necessitates sustainable remediation strategies. This study presents a novel adsorbent, RHC-180/0.5, synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal carbonization under mild conditions, utilizing red mud (RM) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) as raw materials. The biopolymers in SCG, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, transformed into hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phenolic groups, enhancing the material's adsorption capacity. Batch adsorption experiments showed optimal performance under alkaline conditions. To minimize precipitation interference, the adsorption mechanism was further investigated at pH = 6. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models indicated chemical adsorption and heterogeneous multilayer adsorption, respectively. Simultaneously, the Langmuir model yielded maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of 302.33 mg/g and 154.97 mg/g for Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively, confirming the excellent adsorption performance of RHC-180/0.5. Intraparticle diffusion model analysis showed that surface diffusion dominated in the three-phase adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. Spectroscopic analysis validated the roles of chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and cation-π interactions, surface complexation, and redox reactions in the adsorption mechanism. At pH = 6, RHC-180/0.5 retained approximately 80 % of its initial removal efficiency after ten regeneration cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. This work highlights a sustainable, cost-effective approach to converting agricultural and industrial waste into high-performance adsorbents for heavy metal-contaminated wastewater treatment.

A functionalized Zr-based metal–organic framework (MOF) was synthesized using UiO-66 as the framework, polydiallyldimethylammonium (PDDA) as the interfacial modifier, and polydopamine (PDA) as the functionalizing agent through a straightforward one-pot hydrothermal reaction. The material underwent characterization through X-ray diffraction to determine its crystal structure, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to analyze its surface morphology and microstructure, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to evaluate its elemental oxidation states. These analyses revealed that UiO-66-PDDA-PDA displayed well-dispersed PDA and an abundance of functionalized hydroxyl and amino groups. Utilizing this innovative functionalized MOF material, an electrochemical sensor was developed based on a UiO-66-PDDA-PDA-modified glassy carbon electrode for the simultaneous determination of Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+. The fabricated electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent selectivity and rapid response to microgram levels of the mentioned heavy metal ions in tea, water, and dairy products using cyclic voltammetry. The sensor demonstrated remarkably low detection limits and stable relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the four heavy-metal ions. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties and applications of the modified electrode were investigated by optimizing operational parameters such as pH, deposition potential, and deposition time to improve the detection of trace ions. This approach offers a rapid screening method for inspectors to verify sample compliance.
