Electrocatalytic oxidation is regarded as an effective technique for decomposing refractory organic compounds like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, achieving highly efficient and long-life electrodes is still a great challenge. Herein, Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anodes consisting of Pt4+ and Pt0 species were fabricated by combining modified microemulsion technology with a calcination process, in which Pt nanoparticles were highly dispersed and encapsulated in Ru–Ir composite oxides to form a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) structure. The as-constructed SMSI layer on the Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anode resulted in the improvement of the charge transfer capability and also increased the degradation (99.30%) and mineralization (91.32%) of PFOA during the electrochemical oxidation process. Notably, the service lifetime of Ti/RuO2–IrO2@Pt anodes was remarkably improved from 24 to 42.3 h compared to commercial Ti/RuO2–IrO2 anodes. Moreover, the possible degradation mechanism of PFOA was also speculated through the detection of short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids and reactive radicals. These results not only revealed that the concept and methodology of SMSI could be an effective way for constructing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts but also greatly advanced fundamental understanding.

Introducing two-dimensional (2D) nanoreinforced materials on the surface of carbon fibers (CFs) is a promising strategy for overcoming the chemical inertness of CFs. However, disordered alignment and uneven dispersion of 2D nanoreinforced materials on the CF surface are the most critical issues that must be addressed. Herein, MXene (M) was functionalized using graphene oxide (G) to produce intercalated 2D reinforcement materials, and robust Ti–O–C covalent bonds were introduced to ensure that M and G have strong binding forces. An interface layer with a more ordered and compact “brick-and-mortar” structure was developed on the CF surface to obtain CF composites with high strength and toughness. Owing to the structure superiority, robust Ti–O–C covalent bonding, and abundant π–π interactions, the optimal CF composites achieved high strength and toughness, with a tensile strength of 1587 MPa and a toughness of 45 MJ m–3. Meanwhile, the interlaminar shear and flexural strengths increased to 82 and 1178 MPa, respectively. The reinforcing mechanisms of the unique interface layer on CF composites were systematically investigated via data analysis and modeling. This study provides a constructive design inspiration for fabricating high-performance CF-reinforced polymer composites, considerably expanding their applications.

The development of traditional photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is severely hindered by poor visible-light response and limited reaction space. In this study, a visible-light responsive PFC with g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ti photoanode was proposed and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade rhodamine B. The degradation rate, maximum power density and maximum photocurrent density of the PMS/PFC system were respectively 95.39%, 103.87 μW cm −2 and 0.62 mA cm −2 , which was respectively 1.28, 2.18, and 1.98 times that of PFC. The excellent performance is attributed to the production of more reactive oxygen species and the extension of the reaction space range after the activation of PMS. The activation pathway of PMS and charge transfer pathway of the photoanode were discussed in detail, and it was proposed that PMS was activated by Z-scheme heterojunction g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ti photoanode.

Ti-containing mesoporous silica materials with a well-defined structure could give a clear picture of the elusive reaction pathways in photocatalysis. However, the dispersion of Ti sites usually results in their bandgaps being larger than that of TiO 2 , which makes the narrowing of bandgaps more challenging to construct visible light photocatalysis. Here, Ti-MCM-48 with an ordered cubic mesostructure and a homogeneous dispersion of Ti sites were successfully synthesized to embed an organic dye alizarin red S (ARS), affording a visible light photocatalyst ARS – Ti-MCM-48. The selective aerobic oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides driven by green light over ARS – Ti-MCM-48 was accomplished directly. Notably, both electron transfer and energy transfer pathways were involved in the activation of O 2 , in which the Ti sites play a crucial role. Importantly, the photobleaching was effectively alleviated by embedding ARS into the mesopores of Ti-MCM-48. Moreover, high selectivities of desired sulfoxides were favorably achieved. In general, Ti-containing porous materials could be a unique scaffold for embedding photoactive molecules to carry out selective organic transformations driven by visible light.

Achieving lightweight and ultrabroadband electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption requires precise regulation across multiple scales; however, bridging molecular design with macroscopic architecture remains a significant challenge. Herein, a multiscale design strategy is proposed by integrating molecular-level precursor engineering, catalytic nanostructure evolution, and topological structural design. A titanium (Ti)-modified polysiloxane (PSO) precursor is constructed through the molecular incorporation of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT), which enables homogeneous Ti distribution within the polymer network and subsequent regulation of carbon evolution during pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, the tailored precursor chemistry drives the in-situ formation of catalytically active TiO x C y phases, which induce the transformation of free carbon from disordered nanoparticles into interconnected carbon nanowires (CNWs) networks. Coupled with a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) architecture enabled by additive manufacturing, the resulting CNWs-SiOC ceramics exhibit a synergistic enhancement in EM-wave attenuation. The optimized sample (ST-5) delivers a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −59.21 dB at 14.1 GHz with a thickness of 3.30 mm, along with an ultrabroad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 9.20 GHz at 3.70 mm. The superior performance originates from the cooperative effects of improved impedance matching, enhanced conduction loss enabled by CNWs networks, and intensified interfacial polarization arising from abundant TiO x C y /SiOC heterointerfaces, together with multiple scattering within the TPMS framework. The proposed multiscale design strategy achieves lightweight SiOC ceramics with broadband EM-wave absorption through the synergistic effects of molecular precursor engineering, carbon-topology reconstruction, interfacial regulation, and TPMS architecture.

In order to change the mass transfer efficiency of conventional flat plate electrodes in the catalytic process, a new filtered Pd@Ti electrode has been prepared. The results indicated that the filtered Pd@Ti electrode had the best removal efficiency of 99.59% on diclofenac (DCF) at the flux of 40.85 L/m 2 ∙h -1 . Compared to unfiltered Pd@Ti electrodes, the removal efficiency was 1.18 times higher, the current efficiency was 2.15 times higher and the cost of electricity was 69.05% lower. The electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination process of DCF by filtered Pd@Ti electrode mainly relies on indirect reductive dechlorination by H* adsorbed on the electrode surface. The removal efficiency of the filtered Pd@Ti electrode remained above 80% after six cycles. The removal mechanism and reaction pathway of filtered Pd@Ti electrode for dechlorination of different chlorinated PPCPs were proposed. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity of chlorinated PPCPs and their products were evaluated by using the toxicity estimation software tool (T.E.S.T.) model. This study confirmed the promising application of filtered Pd@Ti electrodes for the removal and detoxification of chlorinated PPCPs in wastewater.

Surgical resection remains the primary treatment modality for bone tumors. However, it is prone to local bone defects and tumor recurrence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for multifunctional biomaterials that combine tumor treatment and bone repair after bone tumor surgery. Herein, a chitosan composite scaffold (CS/DOX@Ti-MOF) was designed for both tumor therapy and bone repair. Among them, the amino-functionalized Ti-based metal-organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti), Ti-MOF) has a high specific surface area of 1116 m 2 /g and excellent biocompatibility, and promotes osteogenic differentiation. The doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity of Ti-MOF was 322 ± 21 mg/g, and DOX@Ti-MOF has perfect antitumor activity. Furthermore, the incorporation of DOX@Ti-MOF improved the physical and mechanical properties of the composite scaffolds, making the scaffold surface rough and favorable for cells to attach. CS/DOX@Ti-MOF retains the unique properties of each component. It responds to the release of DOX in the tumor microenvironment to remove residual tumor cells, followed by providing a site for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. This promotes bone repair and achieves the sequential treatment of postoperative bone tumors. Overall, CS/DOX@Ti-MOF may be a promising substitute for postoperative bone tumor clearance and bone defect repair. It also provides a possible strategy for postoperative bone tumor treatment.

Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-n aerogel composites with different molar ratios of Si/Ti, prepared by a sol–gel method followed by the ambient pressure drying technique, were used for the adsorptive removal of thiophenic compounds from model fuels, along with Ag2O/SiO2-50. The physicochemical properties of aerogel composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and pyridine (Py) FT-IR spectroscopy. The results indicated that doping Ti into Ag2O/SiO2-50 led to a slight decrease in the specific surface area, an obvious increase in the actual content of Ag, and the appearance of weak Lewis acid centers on the surface. The data for equilibrium adsorption of thiophene over Ag2O/SiO2-50 and Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-50 were well fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. The kinetic experimental data of Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-50 was well fitted by a pseudo-second-order model. For two adsorbents, negative values of ΔG indicated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous. The adsorption process on Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-50 was more favorable at higher temperatures, which was contrary to that on Ag2O/SiO2-50. The incorporation of Ti into Ag2O/SiO2-50 can improve the adsorptive desulfurization performance owing to the increase in the actual content of Ag species (π-complexation centers), and thiophenic compounds can be adsorbed via Lewis acid–base interaction and S–Ti binding besides π-complexation. Among Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-n, Ag2O/SiO2–TiO2-50 performed the best.

Core-shell titanium carbide/carbon (TiC@C) and titanium carbide/nitrogen-doped carbon (TiC@CNx) quasi-aligned nanofiber arrays (NFAs) are fabricated on biomedical Ti-6Al-4V by a simple thermal chemical process in the presence of benzene and pyridine at 800 °C, respectively. The morphology, structure, and composition of the TiC@C and TiC@CNx NFAs are characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy , energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The TiC@C and TiC@CNx nanofibers consisting of highly conducting single-crystalline TiC cores and carbon shells or N-doped carbon shells have a large amount of defects and N doping endows the TiC@CNx NFAs with excellent electrochemical properties . The TiC@CNx NFAs electrode exhibits fast heterogeneous electron transfer (HET) kinetics in the Fe(CN) 6 3−/4− redox couple showing an ideal peak-to-peak potential separation (59 mV) at a high scan rate of 7000 mV s −1 . As a result, the TiC@CNx NFAs electrode has high activity in the simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA), and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) as well as high sensitivity and selectivity in the determination of DA in the presence of UA, AA, and 5-HT. The linear range for the determination of DA is 0.5–180 μM and detection limit is 8 nM (S/N = 3).

Non-biodegradable pharmaceuticals are a group of emerging contaminants that have gained much attention because of their potential risk of inducing adverse ecological and health effects. An efficient Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5-IrO2-RuO2 electrode was prepared by Pechini method and employed as the anode for electrochemical degradation of selected pharmaceuticals (i.e., ibuprofen, atenolol, and carbamazepine). Compared its counterparts, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5-IrO2-RuO2 exhibited higher oxygen evolution potential, lower chlorine evolution potential, larger active area, and higher stability. Unlike the negligible effect of solution pH from 4.0 to 10.0, increasing current density favored the target pollutants and COD removal. The removal of IBU was mainly attributed to the reaction with •OH, the contribution of which to IBU removal was enhanced with increasing current density. In contrast to IBU, the removal of ATEN and CBZ was mainly ascribed to the reaction with selective radical chlorine species (RCS) mainly in the form of Cl•, which was produced from direct oxidation of Cl− or indirect oxidation by •OH. It was found that the removal of ATEN and CBZ was less affected by dissolved organic matter (DOM) than that of IBU in municipal effluent. This study demonstrates that Ti/SnO2-Sb-RuO2-IrO2 is an attractive electrode for the destruction of pharmaceutical contaminants.

Magnesium (Mg) is well-known for its bioactivity and degradability. However, due to its low evaporation temperature and limited solubility in titanium (Ti), the fabrication of Ti-Mg alloys remains a huge challenge. In this study, Ti-xMg (x = 0.312, 0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 wt.%) alloys were fabricated by the combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Mg mainly existed as a solid solute element in the Ti matrix, while it also existed as second-phase particles due to its precipitation and dispersion during the SPS process. At a low content of 0.625 wt.%, Mg could increase the mechanical strength of Ti by the solid solution strengthening. However, it was detrimental to material mechanical properties when the Mg content increased to 1.25 wt.%. Being immersed in phosphate buffered solution (PBS), Ti-Mg alloys exhibited a burst Mg 2+ release behavior within the first day, and then the rates of Mg 2+ release gradually decreased within the following 27 days. The results suggested that the cell viability was dependent on the content of Mg in the Ti-Mg alloys. The high Mg content (2.5 wt.%) in the Ti-Mg alloys could lead to significant cytotoxicity. However, appropriate Mg content (0.312∼0.625 wt.%) could promote cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation. The Ti-0.625Mg alloy exhibited the best in vitro biological performance among all groups. In vivo results obtained by implanting the Ti-0.625Mg alloy in the femurs of rats further revealed its enhanced regenerative potential and osteointegration compared to pure Ti implants.
