Sunlight-driven conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals is crucial for building a sustainable energy future. However, this process often suffers from inefficient light utilization and unclear regulation of reactive oxygen species in photocatalysis. An Fe-doped graphitic carbon nitride (CNFe) photocatalyst was synthesized via a thermal polymerization method and 71.53% conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with 55.56% selectivity to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) were achieved under visible light. The catalyst was reused for at least four consecutive cycles without significant activity loss, demonstrating good recyclability and stability. Fe doping created a porous sheet-like structure with uniformly embedded Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals and active Fe-N x sites, which enhanced visible-light absorption and charge separation. The Fe 3 O 4 /g‑C 3 N 4 Z‑scheme heterojunction, synergizing with the redox‑active Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ sites, facilitates efficient O 2 activation to generate selectively superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ). This work demonstrates a feasible strategy for designing efficient non-noble-metal photocatalysts and provides deeper insight into ROS regulation for the sustainable upgrading of biomass-derived feedstocks.

The environmental persistence and potential toxicity of microplastics have raised serious concerns regarding their impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe)/Bi 2 WO 6 , was rationally constructed to promote directional charge separation and enhance redox reactivity under light irradiation. Interfacial coupling between MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe)/Bi 2 WO 6 facilitates an efficient Z-scheme charge-transfer pathway, preserving the strong oxidation ability of photogenerated holes on Bi 2 WO 6 and the high reduction potential of electrons on MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe). When coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the heterojunction effectively activates PMS via electron-mediated pathways, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily sulphate radicals (SO 4 •⁻ ), accompanied by the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and superoxide radicals( • O 2 ⁻ ). As a result, polystyrene (PS) microplastics undergo accelerated oxidative chain scission, surface oxidation, and mass loss, achieving a weight reduction of 45.36% in the presence of 5 mM PMS. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy collectively confirm the dominant role of PMS-derived ROS and validate the proposed Z-scheme-driven degradation mechanism. This study elucidates the synergistic interplay between heterojunction charge dynamics and PMS activation, offering mechanistic insights into the design of efficient photocatalytic systems for microplastic degradation in aquatic environments.

Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction has been the hotspots in the field of chemical industry for a long time. CdIn 2 S 4 is widely used due to its excellent thermal stability and significant absorption in the visible light region. However, the low efficiency of photogenerated charge separation hinders its practical application. In this work, Z-scheme heterojunction ReS 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and applied for the first time in photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 and CO 2 reduction. The experimental results show that compared with pure CdIn 2 S 4 or pure ReS 2 , the photocatalytic performance of ReS 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 is greatly improved. When the loading amount of ReS 2 is 12 wt. % of CdIn 2 S 4 , it exhibits the optimal photocatalytic H 2 O 2 productivity of 361.8 μmol h -1 g -1 and the optimal yields of CO and CH 4 of 89.84 and 5.03 μmol h -1 g -1 respectively in pure water. The Z-scheme heterojunction of ReS 2 /CdIn 2 S 4 was determined by XPS and the band structure. In addition, two possible reaction pathways involving O 2 - and 1 O 2 were analyzed for the H 2 O 2 production by RS/CIS and the pathway of carbon dioxide reduction reaction can be speculated through in-situ DRIFTS.

Advancing novel photocatalytic systems for efficient antibiotic removal is a key strategy for sustainable water purification. However, it remains technically challenging to balance high charge separation efficiency with broad-spectrum light absorption. Herein, the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi/BiPO 4 composite photocatalyst featuring a Z -scheme heterojunction mediated by Bi nanoparticles was synthesized and systematically evaluated. This unique structure integrates surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to simultaneously enhance charge separation and visible light absorption, addressing limitations of traditional g-C 3 N 4 -based systems. Photoelectrochemical characterization confirmed its superior charge separation and rapid electron transfer. Energy band analyses via UV–Vis DRS, XPS valence, and Mott-Schottky tests revealed that the Z -Scheme heterojunction, formed through an internal electric field and mediated by Bi, effectively enhanced the processes of charge separation and light absorption synchronously. Under simulated solar light irradiation, the composite exhibited a 97.5 % tetracycline degradation rate within 90 min, with a reaction rate constant of 4.00 × 10 −2 min −1 , significantly outperforming individual g-C 3 N 4 and BiPO 4 catalysts. Reactive species trapping experiments identified ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 and h + as the dominant reactive species in tetracycline degradation. Overall, this study provides a solid theoretical foundation and experimental support for the practical application of photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment.

Graphene has recently emerged as a nano-functional material with great potential in the field of photocatalysts. Doping graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into CdS by a simple hydrothermal method led to a unique hexagonal CdS prism structure that assembled into nanospheres, simultaneously inducing intergranular Z -Scheme heterojunctions of the (001) and (100) plane families in CdS. As a result, the CdS-GQDs composite exhibited excellent removal efficiencies for gaseous mercury (Hg 0 ), exceeding 95% under visible light and 90% over photocatalytic cycles. Experimental and optical characterization results indicated that the photoresponse of the composite photocatalyst was broadened due to the doped GQDs. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations revealed that the formation of a Z -scheme heterojunction between the two crystal planes of CdS generated an internal electric field in CdS, resulting in a novel carrier transfer channel. Through GQD doping, this work successfully addressed the occurrence of serious photocorrosion in CdS, providing a novel composite dedicated to the efficient removal of Hg 0 from flue gas under visible light.

Tetracycline (TC), a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic for treating bacterial infections, poses significant risks to human health and ecological environments caused by extensive abuse. Hence, sensitive detection and efficient degradation of TC are crucial for protecting both human health and ecological environment. In this work, a multifunctional Z-scheme Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction was designed and constructed in order to achieve both ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and efficient photocatalytic degradation of TC. The influence of the Ag content on the SERS performance was investigated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The charge transfer (CT) mechanism was deduced by band gap and Fermi level calculations. The results showed that the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement (EM) and chemical enhancement (CE) contributed to the excellent SERS sensitivity of Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites (NCs). The limit of detection (LOD) for TC using Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 NCs as SERS substrate was as low as 10 −12 M, and the SERS substrate could also be used to TC detection in real milk samples. In addition, Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 NCs could also act as the efficient photocatalyst to achieve the removal of TC with degradation rate of 94 % under visible light irradiation. Especially, the Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 NCs maintained excellent photocatalytic performance even after six cycles. Possible degradation pathways and photocatalytic degradation mechanism of TC catalyzed by Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 NCs were also proposed. This multifunctional Z-scheme Cu 2 O@Ag/g-C 3 N 4 NCs should thus have great potential for the integration of ultrasensitive SERS detection and efficient degradation of antibiotics.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been widely recognized as an exceptionally promising technique for converting carbon dioxide into high-value-added chemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising photocatalysts for visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction owing to their unique structural advantages, but the achieved efficiency is still not satisfying. Herein, we successfully constructed CdS/UiO-66(Ce) Z-Scheme heterojunction photocatalysts by in situ growth of CdS nanoparticles on an octahedral UiO-66(Ce) substrate. The morphology, physicochemical properties, and photoelectric characteristics of the prepared samples were systematically characterized in detail. Photocatalytic activity results indicated that the prepared heterostructure could efficiently reduce CO 2 to CO, and its activity was significantly superior to that of pristine UiO-66 (Ce) and CdS. Under illumination of visible light, the optimal as-prepared sample achieved a CO yield of 134.3 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was 168.6 and 2.62 times higher than that of pure UiO-66(Ce) and CdS, respectively. The reinforced photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CO activity can be ascribed to the obviously improved visible-light harvesting and effectively facilitated the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers via a Z-scheme charge transfer. This study may well present a novel design strategy of highly efficient MOFs-based Z-scheme photocatalytic systems for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

The degradation efficiency of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) processes for the removal of organic pollutants is highly dependent on the performance of the photoelectroanode catalyst. The design of PEC systems with a direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and visible light excitation is essential to enhance the degradation efficiency of organic compounds. Here, a α-MnO2/BiOI direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized through a convenient and feasible method. It is remarkable that the photoanode exhibited excellent PEC performance under visible light irradiation; a 95% removal rate of tetracycline (TC) pollutants was achieved within 2 h, and it had excellent stability and reusability, which was expected to degrade antibiotics efficiently and environmentally in harsh environments. The presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in the α-MnO2/BiOI heterojunction was confirmed by electron spin resonance technique, and the OVs acted as electron traps that contributed substantially to the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. ESR characterization showed that the main reactive radicals during TC degradation were •OH and •O2−. By analyzing the intermediates, the possible degradation pathways of TC were further analyzed and a suitable degradation mechanism was proposed. The toxicity changes in the degradation process were explored by evaluating the toxicity of the intermediates. This study provides a new way to enhance the performance of Bi-based semiconductor photocatalysts for the effective degradation of TC in water. Keywords:direct Z-scheme heterojunction;organic pollutants;OVs;PEC

Construction of Z -scheme graphitic carbon nitride-titanium dioxide nanotubes (C 3 N 4 -TNT) has been known useful to optimize the band structure for improving photon capture and for accelerating charge carrier separation and transfer rate in photoelectrochemical water splitting (PECWS) cells. However, the reported operating potential window in a PECWS cell, often in 0 – 1.23 V RHE (volt versus reversible hydrogen electrode) plus its overpotential, is too narrow to understand the C 3 N 4 -TNT electrode. Herein, a broad potential window of −0.5 − 2.5 V RHE is applied to C 3 N 4 -TNT@Ti and recorded via the polarization test under chopped sunlight to analyze the effect of both electrons from external electrical circuit and photons from simulated sunlight. In 0 – 2.5 V RHE , the potential enhances the photocurrent density. For example, at 1.6 V RHE , the C 3 N 4 -TNT sample exhibits 1.8-time higher photocurrent density than that of pure TNT. In −0.5 − 0 V RHE , i.e., both samples do not give photo-current response. In addition, for advanced water oxidation/reduction beyond WS to oxygen/hydrogen, a large potential window will be expected. Further, the light capture ability, the charge carrier recombination rate, and the electron flow path through the C 3 N 4 -TNT junction without and with reverse/forward potentials are discussed to elucidate the effect of the applied potential.

The elimination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) from water has attracted extensive research attention. This study hydrothermally synthesized composite photocatalysts composed of BiVO 4 microspheres containing coexisting phases of monoclinic scheelite (M-BiVO 4 ) and tetragonal zircon (T-BiVO 4 ), i.e., MT-BiVO 4 , loaded onto P-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (PCNS). Furthermore, their morphology, structure, and photoelectrochemical properties were comprehensively characterized, and the performance and stability of photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl were examined. Additionally, the effects of humic acid (HA), coexisting anions/cations, and actual water samples on the degradation efficiency of TC-HCl were investigated, and the degradation mechanism and pathways were examined. The findings indicated that the percentage of M-BiVO 4 in MT-BiVO 4 considerably influences the photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst. Furthermore, the excellent photocatalytic performance of 5% BVO/PCNS was attributed to the synergistic effects of P-doping the modified g-C 3 N 4 , MT-BiVO 4 isotype heterojunction effects, and the Z-scheme heterojunction constructed from MT-BiVO 4 and PCNS, which can enhance the absorption range of the visible light and accelerate the transfer and separation of charge carriers between catalysts. The free radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance tests indicated that holes and O 2 - were the dominant active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. With high reusability and stability, the 5% BVO/PCNS composite has great potential for practical wastewater treatment applications. This study offers a new approach for preparing photocatalysts synergized by isotype and Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is of great practical significance to degrade persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, it still faces challenges and always in pursuit to construct a photocatalyst system with efficient charge separation and strong redox capacity. Herein, a Z-scheme energy band configuration in a hierarchical heterostructure composed of two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) ZnO nanoparticles was fabricated for the degradation of tetracycline (TC)—one of the typical POPs. On the one hand, the Z-scheme heterojunction inhibits the recombination of charge carriers and preserves the strong redox capacity of ZnIn2S4 and ZnO. On the other hand, the hierarchical microstructure and the 2D/0D subunits endow the ZnIn2S4/ZnO photocatalyst with good light harvesting, intimate interface contact, and short charge transfer. As a result, the hybrid photocatalyst exhibited a high reaction rate constant of 0.074 min−1 for TC degradation, which is 5.4 and 2.8 times that of the pure ZnIn2S4 and ZnO, respectively. This work provides new insight into the integration of energy band engineering and morphology modulation to design advanced photocatalytic systems for POP treatment.

Rapid recombination of the photogenerated carrier, a limited range of photoexcitation, and unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity are the limiting factors in photocatalytic applications. Accelerating photogenerated carrier transfer and constructing surface active sites have become critical tasks. In this study, a dual Z-scheme UNiMOF/BiVO 4 /S-C 3 N 4 (NBSCN) photocatalyst with a 2D/3D/2D structure was successfully constructed. Under visible-light irradiation, NBSCN outperforms single and binary composites in photocatalytic tetracycline photodegradation and Cr(VI) photoreduction due to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis. The maximum photocatalytic efficiency of tetracycline (90.1 %) and Cr(VI) (93.6 %) in 120 min was achieved by NBSCN-20 %. The exceptional photocatalytic activity of NBSCN-20 % can be attributed to the large specific surface area, increased active sites, improved visible-light absorption ranges, and the construction of heterojunctions. The fabricated dual Z-scheme heterojunction at the interface of NBSCN reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and widens the range of light absorption. NBSCN-20 % exhibits excellent stability in the process of cyclic experiments. On the basis of the results, the feasibility of the dual Z-scheme mechanism is proposed. This work demonstrates that NBSCN-20 % photocatalyst has promising application prospects in removing heavy-metal ions and organic pollutants from aqueous environments.
