Humic acid (HA), one of most ubiquitous natural resources in the world, was modified with monoolein to prepare a novel hydrophobic adsorbent (HA–M) for removal of chlorobenzene compounds (CBs) from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, temperature, coexisting organics and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity of HA–M for CBs were investigated to obtain the optimum removal efficiency. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were researched as well as the column adsorption studies to reveal the mechanism for HA–M to adsorb CBs. The experimental results indicated that the HA–M materials exhibit high removal efficiency of CBs (>90%) in a wide range of pH values and temperatures. The adsorption of CBs with HA–M was realized by the hydrophobic interactions between CBs and HA–M. In addition, the HA–M also performed high removal efficiency toward organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in aqueous solutions. Most important, the excellent adsorbability of the super-hydrophobic HA–M adsorbent could be comparable or fairly good compared with other adsorbents. Consequently, our present investigations provided a facile synthesis route for the highly effective and recyclable hydrophobic adsorbent for the adsorptive removal of CBs and OCPs from aqueous solutions.

The electrochemical reduction of oxygen is pivotal for advancing emerging energy technologies. Precise control over morphology and electronic structure is essential for enhancing catalytic activity and stability in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, a freestanding carbon electrode is developed by in-situ growth of carbon nanotube (CNT)-encapsulated bimetallic CoM (M = Ni, Fe, Mn, Cu) nanoparticles (NPs) within a hierarchical carbonized wood matrix (CoM@NWCC). The hierarchically porous architecture of the electrode promotes efficient mass transfer during the ORR. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed that incorporating metals such as Ni, Fe, Mn, and Cu modulates the electronic structure of Co, specifically adjusting the distance between the d-band center (E d ) and the Fermi level (E F ), thus optimizing ORR kinetics. Among these, CoNi@NWCC, with its asymmetric electronic configuration, achieves an optimal balance between OH * and OOH * adsorption, significantly enhancing catalytic performance. This study demonstrates the potential of band structure engineering to precisely tailor catalyst properties, offering a cost-effective and high-performance solution for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) suitable for large-scale deployment.

Nowadays, attractive progress has been made on flexible humidity sensors for multifunctional applications, yet most of them still suffer from intrinsic instability due to the device structure based on flexible substrates. Herein, high-performance flexible humidity sensors were constructed using alkali metal halide doped polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) freestanding films. These films are prepared via a versatile thermally induced phase separation procedure with a network-like porous structure. After doping with metal salts of MCl (M = Li, Na, K), the humidity sensing performance is highly improved, among which the LiCl@PVP/PVDF film is the optimized one. In the relative humidity range of 11–97% at room temperature, the LiCl@PVP/PVDF sensor exhibits high response (2.3 × 103), fast response (10 s), small hysteresis (0.41%), and excellent repeatability. Notably, the LiCl@PVP/PVDF film is featured as fully self-supporting without the assistance of any substrate, readily tailorable that can be cut into different shapes, as well as highly flexible that can be bent to certain angles, and meanwhile almost maintains its response without significant decrease. Furthermore, the excellent performance enables the LiCl@PVP/PVDF sensor to demonstrate great potential in real-time noncontact diaper and finger detection. This contribution provides a practical humidity sensing candidate for moisture monitoring and gives insights into the fields of humidity sensors and flexible electronics.

Human hair is a non-invasive biological sample that is easy to collect and store and can reflect long-term body health. However, the correlation between DL-amino acids and metabolic diseases in hair samples has not been studied. Therefore, we propose a novel UHPLC-HRMS method for analyzing seven free chiral amino acids (DL-Thr, DL-Glu, DL-Ala, DL-Val, DL-Pro, DL-Leu, and DL-Phe) simultaneously in hair samples by derivatization of chiral probe 4-(N,N-dmethylaminosulfonyl)-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole-trans-2-methyl-L-proline (DBD-M-Pro) labeled with targeted amino functional groups. Gradient elution was carried out using an ACQUITYTM BEH C18 (100×2.1 mm,1.7 μm) column with a mobile phase of 0.15 % formic acid (FA) in 10 mM ammonium acetate (CH 3 -COONH 4 ) and 0.2 % FA in acetonitrile. The labelled DL-amino acid diastereoisomers could be completely separated, with a resolution (Rs) of 1.59–11.44. These amino acids show a strong linear correlation within the range of 3.1–99.2 pmol (R 2 ≥ 0.9990). Intraday and interday precision was 1.87 %–14.87 %. The average recovery was 96.12 %–105.33 %. The limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.29 to 2.11 pmol. We then employed the method to determine the concentration of free chiral amino acids in hair samples from 30 healthy volunteers (HVs) and 30 diabetes patients (DPs). Male diabetes patients had significantly higher levels of L-Thr, L-Val, L-Leu ( p < 0.05), and D-Ala ( p < 0.01) in their hair samples than male healthy volunteers and female diabetes patients had significantly higher levels of D-Ala ( p < 0.05) in their hair samples than female healthy volunteers. This is the first study to confirm the feasibility of using free DL-amino acids in human hair as potential biomarkers for diabetes.

Understanding electrical transport mechanisms and key thermal stability factors in high-temperature thermosensitive ceramics is essential for developing highly stable temperature sensors under extreme thermal conditions. This study develops the high-entropy pyrochlore stannates (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 M 0.2 ) 2 Sn 2 O 7 (M = Eu, Dy, Ho, or Yb) via solid-state synthesis, demonstrating exceptional negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior across 300 – 1400 °C. Hall measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses reveal a dual redox mechanism for these ceramics: partial reduction of Sn 4+ to Sn 2+ at B-sites and rare-earth ions (Sm/Eu/Yb) to RE 2+ at A-sites, generating hole-dominated p-type conductivity. The materials exhibit outstanding thermal stability, with resistance drift below 1.96% after 500 hours at 1400 °C, attributed to the entropy-stabilized structure that effectively suppresses lattice disorder transformation. Aging studies further demonstrate that high oxygen vacancy concentrations lead to resistance drifts, as oxygen filling at elevated temperatures oxidizes RE 2+ to RE 3+ , reducing charge carriers and ultimately increasing resistivity. This study elucidates for the first time the hole-dominated conduction mechanism arising from dual-site cation valence changes (Sn/RE) and the regulation effect of oxygen vacancies on high-temperature stability, which provides an important theoretical basis and material design strategy for the development of the next-generation high-temperature NTC sensors with excellent stability.

Characterizing the structural changes of cell-targeting delivery carriers in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is crucial for understanding their effectiveness in cell targeting and transport. Herein, RGD peptide-grafted carboxymethyl starch (CMS) and cationic quaternary ammonium starch (QAS) were utilized to fabricate quintet-layered nanocapsules loaded with ovalbumin (OVA). The aim was to improve delivery and transportation efficiency, specifically targeting M cells. The research analyzed the impact of pH and enzyme variations in GIT on the structure of nanocapsules, interactions between carriers and the release behavior of OVA. Results showed that the size of nanocapsules increased from 229.2 to 479.8 nm and the zeta potential decreased from −1.08 to −33.33 mV during oral delivery. This was evident in TEM images, showing a more relaxed core-shell structure. Isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular dynamic simulation indicated that pH changes primarily affected the electrostatic interaction between carriers. Increasing pH led to reduced affinity constants, and around 84.42 % of OVA was successfully delivered to M cells. Moreover, the transport efficiency of nanocapsules to M cells was five times greater than that of Caco-2 cells. This suggests the feasibility of developing a nanocapsules delivery system capable of adapting to pH changes in GIT by regulating electrostatic interactions between carriers.

Platinum group metal-free catalysts based on transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon materials are gaining attention for their applications in electrocatalysis. Nitrogen-coordinated metal sites (MNx) have been identified as the main active sites in PGM-free catalysts. Current synthetic approaches rely on the high-temperature treatment to introduce targeted electroactive MNx sites into the carbon matrix. In this study, we demonstrated the formation of MNx sites on Ni- and N-co-doped carbon templates via the solution-phase coordination with target metal ions, including Fe2+, Fe3+, and/ Co2+. The formation of MNx sites was confirmed via a combined approach of various physical characterization techniques, elemental analysis, and electrochemical analysis. The results indicate that the metal-vacancy-Nx sites in the template can coordinate with target ions to form electrochemically active MNx sites. By varying heat-treatment temperature, the amount of FeNx sites formed via coordination with Fe2+ ion can be tuned and correlated with the change of activity toward oxygen reduction reaction. The amount of MNx sites formed via solution-phase coordination with various ions followed the sequence of Co2+ > Fe2+ > Fe3+. These findings may further guide the future development of MNx-C electrocatalysts through this solution-phase coordination approach.

This study investigated the epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and transmission risks of β-lactamase, cefotaxime-hydrolyzing, Munich (blaCTX-M)-positiveEscherichia coli(CTX-M-EC) in large-scale pig farms in Jiangxi Province (China). In total, 278 samples (manure, wastewater, drinking water, and flies) were collected. CTX-M-EC strains were isolated and analyzed using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, resistance gene profiling, multilocus sequence typing, and genetic environment analysis with gene transfer assessed by transduction experiments. Twenty-seven CTX-M-EC strains (9.71%) were isolated, all exhibiting multi-drug resistance with 100% resistance to cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline, and >90% resistance to ceftazidime, florfenicol, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. FourblaCTX-Msubtypes were identified.blaCTX-M-55was the predominant subtype (70.37%) and was distributed across diverse sequence types and serotypes. Each strain harbored multiple antibiotic resistance genes, plasmids, and virulence genes. Mobile elements such as ISEcp1and IS26were detected surrounding theblaCTX-Mgene, and 96.29% of strains successfully transferred theblaCTX-Mgene via transduction. Clones highly homologous to pig manure strains were detected in flies and sewage, suggesting that this resistance gene can spread between animals, the environment, and vectors. These findings highlight the high transmission risk ofblaCTX-Mand underscore the need for rational antibiotic use, waste management, and vector control within a One Health framework.

Simultaneous quantification of multiple heavy metal ions (HMIs) is essential due to enhanced toxicity induced by synergistic effects. The currently available detection methods suffer from drawbacks such as costly devices, poor anti-interference, and specificity. In this work, a ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor for simultaneous detection of trace lead (Pb 2+ ) and mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) was developed. Here, a metal-organic framework, UiO-66-CNTs, with inherent and stable electrochemical signal was used for loading complementary strands (CSs) and internal reference. Guanine-rich and thymine-rich oligonucleotides , labelled with carbon dots (CDs), acted as aptamers (Apts) and hybridized with CSs to form M-shaped DNA complexes. Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ could be recognized and captured by Apts to form Pb 2+ -G-quadruplex and T-Hg 2+ -T complexes, leading to the destruction of M-shaped DNA complexes and changes in CDs’ signal. The current ratios, I CDs / I UiO-66-CNTs , were applied to quantify Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . Benefiting from the anti-interference ability of the ratiometric strategy and the specificity of Apts, the proposed method enabled detection Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ through simple instrumentation, with detection limits of 2.0 ng mL −1 and 0.5 ng mL −1 . Moreover, it was applied to assess Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ contamination in series of aquatic edible vegetables. The experimental results were consistent with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), demonstrating its potential in practical applications.

Introduction This study developed a pancreatic cancer targeted drug delivery system that responds to changes in acidity. The system was based on iron oxide core-shell magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (M-MSNs) to treat pancreatic cancer through combined chemotherapy and starvation therapy. Methods Glucose oxidase (Gox) was coupled to the cancer cell surface to reduce glucose availability for cancer cells, exacerbating the heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment. Reduced pH accelerated the depolymerization of pH-sensitive polydopamine (PDA), thereby controlling the spatial distribution of Gox and release of doxorubicin (DOX) within tumor cells. Results Characterization results showed the successful synthesis of DG@M-MSN-PDA-PEG-FA (DG@NPs) with a diameter of 66.02 ± 3.6 nm. In vitro data indicated DG@NPs were highly effective and stable with good cellular uptake shown by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). DG@NPs exhibited high cytotoxicity and induced apoptosis. Additionally, in vivo experiments confirmed DG@NPs effectively inhibited tumor growth in nude mice with good biosafety. The combination of starvation therapy and chemotherapy facilitated drug release, suggesting DG@NPs as a novel drug delivery system for pancreatic cancer treatment. Conclusion This study successfully constructed a doxorubicin release system responsive to acidity changes for targeted delivery in pancreatic cancer, providing a new strategy for combination therapy.

ZnO quantum dots (QDs) with tunable size and photoluminescence can be achieved simply by controlling their growth during the sol–gel synthesis process. However, the role of alkali metal hydroxide MOH (M = Li, Na or K) as the reactant in the growth of ZnO QDs is still controversial. In this work, we carried out a comprehensive study on the growth of ZnO QDs by using different types of MOH as the reactant under different reaction temperatures and in different solvents. The results reveal that the growth of ZnO QDs is considerably governed by MOH through the co-effect of OH− and M+ ions, which can facilitate and hinder the growth, respectively. Further investigations suggest that the hindering effect caused by M+ cations is strongly dependent on the amount of OH− anions around the ZnO QD surface and follows the trend of Li+ > Na+ > K+. Moreover, the dual role of the reactant MOH can also be confirmed when altering reaction temperature and solvent. The photoluminescence of ZnO QDs shows size-dependence and can be easily tuned over a wide range from purple to yellow via adjusting the reaction parameters. This research establishes a fundamental understanding on the growth of ZnO QDs from the role of the reactant MOH point of view, which may benefit the controllable growth of ZnO QDs.

In this work, a novel poly(aniline-co-m-aminobenzoic acid)–ionic liquid composite coating is presented for the head-space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of aryl halides (i.e. chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, 4-bromotoluene, and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene). This coating was prepared on a platinum wire by electrochemical deposition in an aqueous solution containing 0.1 mol L−1 aniline, 0.1 mol L−1m-aminobenzoic acid, 0.02 mol L−1 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1.0 mol L−1 HNO3. It showed high mechanical stability, thermal stability (up to 320 °C) and durability (repetitively used for more than 120 times). When it was applied to the HS-SPME and gas chromatographic detection of aryl halides, it presented high repeatability and sensitivity. Under the optimized conditions (i.e. extraction temperature: 30 °C; extraction time: 30 min; stirring rate: 600 rpm; NaCl concentration: 0.35 g mL−1), the linear detection ranges were 0.2–100 μg L−1 with correlation coefficients above 0.9922; the detection limits were 0.01–0.05 μg L−1 (S/N = 3). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of chromatographic peak areas were smaller than 5.3% for five successive measurements with a single fiber, and the fiber to fiber RSD was 2.4–9.5% (n = 3) for different aryl halides (50 μg L−1). This method was successfully applied to the determination of real samples (i.e. moth balls) and the recoveries for the standard added were 85.7 % to 121%.
