Structure and optical properties of stable Bi/Eu codoped borophosphate La7O6(BO3)(PO4)2 phosphors for application in wLEDs

L. Yue,X.Z. Zheng,P.J. Xia,C. Wang,Y.F. Lei,M. Xu,W.B. Dai

Rare-earth (RE) and/or transition metal (TM) ions (co)doped phosphors have garnered much attention for promoting development in the fields of solid state lighting (SSL) and displays. It is a meaningful work to design high-quality phosphor via intelligent assembling from wide variety of compounds with RE/TM ions. Herein, the lanthanum borophosphate La 7 O 6 (BO 3 )(PO 4 ) 2 (LOBP) and Bi/Eu were selected as host and dopants for constructing the phosphor LOBP: Bi/Eu via solid phase synthetic method due to simple synthesis, chemical/thermal stability, rich cationic sites, appropriate bandgap, and controllable optical tuning from synergistic effect of cyan (Bi) and red (Eu) emissions, respectively. The structure and site occupations were analysed via XRD and Rietveld refinements , showing Bi 3+ ions were only resided in La 3+ sites within the monoclinic matrix (P2 1 /n) and appeared greater inclination towards the La sites with coordinate number ( CN ) = 8 as compared with CN  = 7 due to the closer ion radius ratio. While Eu 3+ ions entered into the two distinct La sites with almost the same probability. The morphology and elemental mapping were obtained via SEM/EDS, exhibiting irregular particle shape with micron-level size, and the chemical composition met expectation. Through energy transfer (ET) from Bi to Eu under n -UV excitation, the adjustable photoluminescence (PL) from cyan traversing white and finally to red could be achieved. The concentration quenching for both singly- (Bi) and co-doped (Bi/Eu) phosphors were charged by the d-d interactions. Finally, the stable as-fabricated n -UV pumped w LED via coupling the composition-optimized white-emitting LOBP: 2%Bi, 7%Eu to a commercial 305 nm n -UV LED chip shows splendid performances.

Structure-activity relationship of small organic molecule functionalized Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate

Kun Liu,Junping Niu,Yijia Bai,Jianlei Qi,Limin Han,Ning Zhu,Ligang Yan

Ligand engineering has proven to be an effective strategy for tuning and controlling the microenvironment of coordinated metal centers, highlighting the critical bridge between the activity and structural features of catalysts during electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reactions (eCO 2 RR). However, the limited availability of diverse organic ligands has hindered the development of novel high-performing electrocatalysts. In contrast, small organic molecules have been widely used in the fabrication of metal complexes due to their well-defined functionalities, low cost, and easy accessibility. Herein, functionalized small organic molecules were employed to prepare a new type of Bi-based heterogeneous molecular catalyst. These molecular catalysts enhance both electrical conductivity and catalytic activity for converting CO 2 to formate in the eCO 2 RR. The relationship between the structure and electrochemical performance of organic-functionalized Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts was thoroughly investigated. Comprehensive characterization and kinetic studies demonstrated that the functional groups of the organic molecules construct bond pathways for electron transfer and promote the transformation of the active phase from Bi to Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 . In-situ Raman spectroscopy reveal that the organic molecules remain intact during the structural reorganization, which is beneficial for the sustained generation of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 active site during the eCO 2 RR process. Consequently, the organic functionalized Bi-based catalysts achieved a high formate Faradaic efficiency (FE HCOO - ) of 89.8 % and a high current density (j HCOO - ) of 40.0 mA cm −2 at a potential of −0.95 V vs. RHE in an H-type cell. This work establishes a novel strategy for creating active heterogeneous catalysts using small organic molecules, opening new avenues for the development of efficient electrocatalysts for CO 2 reduction.

Push–Pull Electronic Effect and D-Band Center Bi-Modulated Bio-Heterojunction Enzyme Enables All-Stage Infected Wound Healing

Miaomiao He,Qiancun Wang,Zhijie Lin,Dan Sun,Guangfu Yin,Yi Deng,Weizhong Yang

Pathogenic infections pose a persistent threat to global public health, necessitating innovative antibacterial strategies with well-defined disinfection pathway. The antibacterial efficiency is confined in the contradiction between reactants adsorption and intermediates desorption. Here, the FeMoS 4 /MXene bio-heterojunction enzyme (FM BioHJzyme) is proposed and constructed. Under the inspiration of near-infrared light (NIR), the heterostructures between the FeMoS 4 and MXene facilitates efficient electron-hole separation with localized electron accumulation at FeMoS 4 sites. Crucially, the electronic push-pull effect induced by Mo polarizes oxygen-containing reactants (H 2 O 2 , H 2 O, O2) toward Fe active centers, enabling sequential electron capture for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The results also reveal an enhancement in electron density at Fe sites compared to FeS/MXene controls, which is accompanied by a downshift in the Fe d-band center that reduces intermediates adsorption energy. The therapeutic efficacy is systematically evaluated using an S. aureus -infected full-thickness skin defect model. The bi-modulated FM BioHJzyme exhibits favorable antibacterial efficiency under NIR irradiation, while subsequent wound healing is facilitated through collagen deposition and angiogenesis in the following absence of NIR irradiation. This work offers a deep insight into the intricate mechanism-performance relationship of BioHJzyme platform in catalytic anti-bacterial application and proposes a sustainable approach of mechanism-guided materials design.

Anisotropy Engineering for Constructing Gradient Electrodes with High-Efficiency Bi/C Catalyst In Situ for Iron-Chromium Flow Battery

Min Wu,Shumin Liu,Haofu Yuan,Zichao Zhao,Lin Qiao,Xiangkun Ma

Iron-chromium flow batteries (ICFBs) are regarded as one of the most potential large-scale energy storage devices. Nevertheless, the slow dynamics of the Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox couples hinder the development of ICFBs. Here, a high-efficiency carbon-loaded bismuth (Bi/C) catalyst is fabricated and introduced on the electrode in situ to improve the dynamics with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). To derive the greatest value, we explore the current density anisotropy in ICFB and design a strategy of anisotropy engineering to meet the requirements of the anisotropy for catalysts. In the work, the gradient electrode (G-PBiC/TCF) with a high-efficiency Bi/C catalyst is successfully prepared. In addition, the ICFB assembled with the G-PBiC/TCF(M/m, the side of more catalysts facing the Membrane side) shows excellent battery performance. It can run over 500 cycles with EE of 81.36% at 120 mA cm −2 , which is the longest cycle life reported. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism and the effect of the catalyst distribution on the performance are explained by the DFT calculation and multi-physical field simulation. This work provides a novel pathway to design that catalyst-supported gradient electrode with high performance and low cost.

Highly efficient upcycling of plastic waste upon Bi-modified P-doped g-C3N4: Plasmonic effect-dominated Schottky barrier tuning

Jinghao Zhu,Guiyang Yu,Hang Gao,Ruihong Sun,Ke Gong,Xiang Li,Debao Wang

Solar-driven upcycling of plastic waste to valuable chemicals provides an economic and low-energy technology to solve the accumulation of plastic waste and environmental pollution problems. However, simply relying on the capacity of single semiconductor system is still limited for high-efficient upcycling activity. Here, a low-cost plasmonic metal Bi-modified P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (Bi/PCN) is firstly reported to apply the conversion of waste plastics (including PE, PP, PVC, PEG, and PAM) under natural environment conditions without adding any cocatalysts or sacrificial agents. TAS and theoretical calculation reveal that the synergistic effect of Bi plasmonic excitation and doped P engineering not only improves light absorption ability, but also tunes interfacial Schottky barrier height (SBH) for the excellent charge separation and transport. The superposed amplification effect of Bi plasmonic excitation originates from hot electron injection, SPR scattering effect, and electromagnetic near-field enhancement. Optimized 1.0 %Bi/PCN composite achieves highly efficient upcycling of PE plastic to HCOOH product as liquid hydrogen storage medium with 1.88 % upcycling efficiency, which is the highest upcycling efficiency upon plasmonic photocatalysts as present. In situ EPR and IR spectra disclose plastics proceed multi-oxidative C C cleavage, where •O 2 and •OH radicals trigger plastic molecule and the intermediates of alkyl peroxide, alkyl radical, and alkoxy radical are successively formed. This work provides a preferable strategy for developing high-performance photocatalysts for upcycling of plastics waste through surface plasmon effect.

Rapid Endothelialization Enabled by Integrating Bi-oriented Topography and Salvianolic Acid B Modification on a Small-Diameter Fibrous Graft

Jixia Deng,Changlin Zhai,Lei Zhan,Kuihua Zhang,Tao Yang,Qinfei Ke,Chen Huang,Anlin Yin

The long-term reliability of small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs) is still largely confined by acute thrombosis, intimal hyperplasia and delayed endothelialization. In this study, a fibrous SDVG containing both physical and biochemical cues was developed to promote rapid endothelialization. The success of our method depends on the integration of a bi-oriented luminal surface with the conjugation of salvianolic acid B (Sal B) via aminolysis and subsequent amidation reaction. Specifically, longitudinally aligned poly (lactide acid-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) microfibers having nano-grooved surface texture provided bi-oriented topographical cues to guide the elongation and migration of endothelial cells (ECs), whilst the incorporation of Sal B served as a biochemical signal to inhibit thrombosis, enhance EC growth and increase von Willebrand factor (vWF) expression in ECs. When implanted into a rat abdominal aorta defect model, the graft was able to facilitate luminal EC coverage, smooth muscle cells infiltration and collagen deposition without causing stenosis or thrombosis. The combination of bi-oriented topography with surface functionalization may become a platform design to maintain patency and accelerate in situ tissue regeneration of SDVG.

One-pot cascade process for efficient upgrading of furfural to γ-valerolactone over adjustable Lewis-Brønsted bi-acidic catalyst

Jiarong Qiu,Yi Liu,Jingwen Zhang,Ben Zhou,Qiyue Yang,Liangqing Zhang,Jianfeng Chen,Bingshu Wang,Lu Lin,Xianhai Zeng

A series of zirconium phosphate (ZrP) loaded H-beta-25 zeolite (i.e., ZrP@HB) multifunctional composite catalysts were synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method, and the one-pot upgrading for the transfer hydrogenation of furfural to γ-valerolactone (GVL) was systematically investigated through various characterizations and catalytic evaluation experiments. Comparative characterization analysis of the ZrP@HB-X(Y) catalysts showed that the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst has uniform distribution of elements, exhibiting a large specific surface area and hierarchical mesoporous/microporous structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of pyridine (Py-FTIR) and NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption characterizations indicated the presence of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, as well as weak, moderate, and strong acid sites in the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst. It was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FTIR that the main reason for Lewis and Brønsted acid sites formation is the presence of P-O-Zr, P-O-H, and HB zeolite on the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst. The HB zeolite as well as Zr and P ratio, can be easily adjusted to efficiently regulate the acidity strength and Lewis and Brønsted acid sites of the ZrP@HB-X(Y) catalysts. The catalytic experiments demonstrated that the physicochemical properties of the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst mentioned above significantly enhance the GVL production. Notably, Lewis and Brønsted acid sites as well as transition metal sites of Zr in the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst were identified as the main factors that enhance the yield of the target product. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the yield of GVL could be as high as 88.16%. Reusability experiments demonstrate that the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst possesses excellent stability. Using levulinic acid as the substrate, the yield of GVL reached 93.92%, suggesting its potential versatility.

Bi-YIG ferrite with high dielectric constant and narrow FMR linewidth and NiCuZn ferrite composite substrates for ultrawideband circulators

Zelai Cheng,Xingyu Huo,Xi Wang,Mingshan Qu,Xiuling Yang,Yin Chen,Hua Su

In response to the demands for miniaturization and broadband operation in microwave ferrite circulators, high-dielectric Bi 1.2 Y 1. 3 -x Ca 0.5+x Ti x Fe 4.5-x Zr 0.5 O 12 ( x  = 0–0.2) ferrites with a narrow ferromagnetic resonance linewidth were synthesized via the solid-state reaction method. The replacement of Fe 3 + ions with non-magnetic Ti 4+ ions reduces the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and increases the relative density of the ferrite, effectively narrowing the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. This ion replacement also enhances the rattling effect due to the decrease in bond valence of the ferrite, leading to an increase in the dielectric constant, which is beneficial for the miniaturization of the circulator. The optimized microwave properties are as follows: ε r = 24.5, tan δ = 1.2 × 10 −3 , 4π M s = 1754 G, and ΔH = 57 Oe. When combined with the Ni 0.42–0.08/3 Nb 0.08/3 Cu 0.18 Zn 0.4 Fe 1.9 Mn 0.08 O 4 ferrite, which possesses a high saturation magnetization, the ring composite substrate demonstrates good matching and a tight interfacial connection. The EDS analysis reveals an element diffusion zone of approximately 1 μm at the interface, caused by the diffusion of elements with smaller ionic radii (e.g., Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn, Nb, and Ti). Finally, a microstrip dual-Y junction circulator was simulated, showing an ultrawideband operating frequency range (6–18 GHz), as well as S 11 < −18 dB, S 12 < −18 dB, and S 21 > −0.5 dB. These findings indicate the application potential of the proposed composite substrate in ultrawideband circulators.

Pathway modulation via directional radical regulation in Ov-rich Bi/BiOClBr solid solutions for enhanced photocatalytic mineralization of toluene

Yang Li,Wenke Liu,Yaling Zeng,Xiaoning Tang,Jian Yang,Ximei Fan

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene pose significant environmental and health risks due to their carcinogenicity and persistence. Although photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology has advanced, achieving efficient mineralization remains challenging. Herein, we engineered hierarchical Bi/BiOCl 0.1 Br 0.9 (BOCB) microspheres with optimized oxygen vacancies (Ov) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects. The hierarchical architecture and Cl/Br heteroatomic substitution narrow the bandgap to 2.93 eV, enhancing visible-light absorption and modulating redox potentials to simultaneously generate superoxide (•O 2 ⁻) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals. Bismuth nanoparticles induce SPR to produce hot electrons that drive •O 2 ⁻ formation, while Ov act as electron traps to capture photogenerated electrons, establishing a built-in electric field (IEF) that synergistically suppresses charge recombination. This Bi-Ov synergy spatially separates electrons and holes, enabling efficient water activation and dual-radical generation in the gas phase. Consequently, 91.7 % toluene degradation and 80 % mineralization are achieved within 2 h under simulated sunlight. In-situ FTIR spectroscopy and DFT calculations confirm that Ov-mediated adsorption/activation of H₂O and toluene alters the photocatalytic conversion pathway. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra reveal a 3.1-fold enhancement in electron-hole separation efficiency compared to the Ov-free sample, ensuring efficient oxidation of parent VOCs and intermediates. This work elucidates the dual-radical mechanism underpinned by Ov-enhanced charge separation in Bi/BiOClBr and provides a scalable strategy for developing high-performance photocatalysts toward deep VOC mineralization.

Enhancing Energy Density of BaTiO3-Bi(M)O3@SiO2/PVDF Nanocomposites via Filler Component Modulation and Film Structure Design

Jin Hu,Fangfang Liu

The low energy density (Ud) of polymeric dielectrics is unfavorable for the integration and miniaturization of electronics, thus limiting their application prospects. Introducing high-εr(dielectric constant) ceramic nanofillers to polymer matrices is the most common strategy to enhance theirεr,and hence theirUd. By comparison, enhancing breakdown strength (Eb) is a more effective strategy to enhanceUd. Herein, 0.6BaTiO3-0.4Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3and 0.85BaTiO3-0.15Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3nanofibers coated with SiO2were utilized as fillers in PVDF-based nanocomposites. The combination of experimental and simulation results suggests that the intrinsic properties of nanofillers are the determining factor of theEbof polymer-based nanocomposites, and SiO2coating and film structure design are effective strategies to enhance theirEb, and consequently theirUd. As a result, the sandwich-structured PVDF/6 wt% 0.85BaTiO3-0.15Bi(Mg0.5Zr0.5)O3@SiO2nanofiber within PVDF/PVDF nanocomposite films achieved a maximumUdof 11.1 J/cm3at anEbof 458 MV/m, which are 2.15 and 1.40 times those of pristine PVDF, respectively.

Structure-property relationships of AWO4 (A = Na, Li, Ca, Sr, Bi, Sm) microwave dielectric ceramics with different entropy designs

Weichen Xu,Xiaomeng Li,Hong Wang,Fuliang Wang,Shouqiang Han,Jing Guo

Microwave dielectric ceramics are critical components in wireless communications. However, it is still a challenge to develop microwave dielectric ceramics with reduced sintering temperatures, high thermal stabilities and good dielectric properties at the same time. Herein, the entropy value, which is able to modulate the grain boundary energy and adjust the inherent sintering temperature, is engineered to develop high-performance microwave dielectric ceramics with low sintering temperatures. The structure-property relationships of AWO 4 ceramics, including (NaCaBi) 1/3 WO 4 , (NaCaSrBi) 1/4 WO 4 , (NaLiCaBiSm) 1/5 WO 4 and (NaLiCaSrBiSm) 1/6 WO 4 with increased entropy values are investigated systematically. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution TEM analyses confirm the formation of single-phase solid solutions with the tetragonal scheelite structure in AWO 4 ceramics. As the number of elements in the A-site varies, the relative permittivities, Q  ×  f values and TCF values shift in the range of 12.2–16.5, 8,000–25,000 GHz and −32.3–31.6 ppm/°C, respectively. Simultaneously, the high-entropy samples demonstrate the lowest sintering temperature of 750 °C among the four formulations. Phillips-Van Vechten-Levine (PVL) complex chemical bond theory reveals that the covalency, lattice energy and bond energy affect the relative permittivity, Q  ×  f value and TCF value, respectively. Raman spectra suggest that high entropy value leads to increased disorder, and infrared reflectivity spectra illustrate that the dielectric response is dominated by polarized optical phonons of [WO 4 ] tetrahedron. It is anticipated that entropy design will facilitate the development of microwave dielectric ceramics in low temperature co-fired ceramic applications.

Dual engineering of oxygen vacancies and Bi metal on BiOCl nanosheets for synergistically enhancing far-red emission of Eu3+

Guofeng Zhang,Rui Hu,Yichao Wang,Sicheng Gao,Zhaoyi Yin,Zhiguo Song,Jianbei Qiu,Yongjin Li

Realizing efficient far-red luminescence ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transitions) from Eu 3+ ions in conventional hosts remains challenging due to the intrinsically limited energy transfer pathways. Herein, a novel dual-engineering strategy is proposed to synergistically increase the far-red emission of Eu 3+ within BiOCl nanosheets by co-introducing plasmonic metallic Bi and oxygen vacancies (OVs). Metallic Bi nanoparticles and the OVs are simultaneously incorporated into BiOCl:Eu nanosheets via a tailored solvothermal method, followed by in situ reduction. The synergistic interplay between the OVs and localized surface plasmon resonance of Bi drastically enhances the excitation harvesting and efficiency of energy transfer to the Eu 3+ activators. Consequently, the far-red emission intensity at 700 nm is remarkably enhanced 6.7-fold under 313 nm excitation, representing an unprecedented increase compared to that of pristine BiOCl:Eu. Furthermore, the precipitation of metallic Bi significantly enhances the thermal stability of the luminescence. This study provides fundamental insights into the synergistic plasmon-defect interactions within 2D semiconductors and establishes a promising pathway for use in developing high-performance far-red phosphors for application in advanced phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes.
