ZIF-8 membranes are promising for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation due to its proper pore size between C 3 H 6 and C 3 H 8 . However, challenges from the defective grain-boundary (poor reproducibility), inferior pressure-resistant, and insufficient synthesis parameters regulation hinder its advancement. Herein, we demonstrate an interface engineering method that can simultaneously deal with these two issues by coating a polymeric layer on the surface of ZIF-8 membrane which can seal the grain boundaries and lock the pressure-induced linker rotation. Accordingly, by optimizing the polymer chain rigidity and the corresponding thickness layer, the resultant membrane with locked rigid interface demonstrates desired C 3 H 6 permeance and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor above 45 GPU and 105, respectively, and stabilized performance up to 7 bar. Such performance is superior to most of the recently reported work in the literature. This strategy provides inspiration for considering the polymer chain rigidity regulation in the membrane coating layer and its effect on developing advanced composite membranes for energy-efficient separations.

MOF membranes are very promising in molecular separation, but it is still a challenge for industrial applications due to the complex and time-consuming synthesis. We use the fast current-driven synthesis (FCDS) method to achieve controlled growth of ZIF-8 membranes on porous graphite-coated ceramic tubes by controlling the growth time and current density. Grown for 30 min at a current density of 0.74 mA/cm 2 , the ZIF-8 membrane exhibits selectivity for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 up to 63 with C 3 H 6 permeance of 6 × 10 −9 mol/(m 2 s Pa). Furthermore, the ZIF-8 membrane exhibits a pressure resistance of up to 3 bar and good stability of ~96 h. This work realizes the breakthrough of the MOF membrane synthesis via FCDS method from the frequently-used expensive and fragile anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) disc substrate to the tough ceramic tubular substrate, which broadens the road for the industrialization of MOF membranes in gas separation fields.

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes have great promise in CO 2 capture. However, tortuous transport passageways restrict the enhancement in the permeability due to the presence of disordered porous structure and dead-end pore. Herein, the growth of ZIF-8 layer on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 formed magnetic core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 particles, which were fixed into 6FDA/ODA:DABA polyimides under magnetic field-induction to fabricate a precursor membrane with vertically oriented chain-like particles. It was then pyrolyzed to form hybrid carbon molecular sieve (HCMS) membranes with ordered microporous structure under high temperature conditions. The cross-section scanning electron microscopy images and N 2 adsorption for resultant HCMS membranes indicate that Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-derived carbons frameworks were vertically oriented to form the ordered microporous structure, which also had good compatibility with carbon matrix stemmed from 6FDA/ODA:DABA polyimides. The as-prepared HCMS membranes embedded with 5 wt% Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8 manifested a highest gas separation performance (permeability of 5130 Barrer; CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 29; CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 48), outperforming the pristine CMS membranes, which were near and beyond 2019 CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 upper bounds, separately. These good separation performances resulted from vertical chain-like microporous particles, which provided fast transport channels to accelerate CO 2 diffusion rate. In addition, we supposed that Fe 3 O 4 prevent ZIF-8 frameworks from destruction during the pyrolysis and promote the size screening capability. More importantly, this membrane exhibited excellent aging resistance over 30 days aging testing compared to pristine CMS membranes. Therefore, it affords a feasible way for carbon capture from flue gas and natural gas.

The discharge of dye wastewater threatens the ecology and biological health. Adsorption technology is the preferred treatment method and absorbent is core. In this study, a high-performance ZIF-8@ZIF-67 adsorbent was synthesized by epitaxial growth . XRD and TEM demonstrated the successful synthesis of the core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and BET showed that the specific surface area, pore volume and diameter of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 were 1518.75 m 2 /g, 0.65 cm 3 /g and 1.71 nm, respectively, with microporous being the predominant. The optimum adsorption conditions for the adsorption of Direct Blue-86 by ZIF-8@ZIF-67 were an initial concentration of 150 mg/g, a ZIF-8@ZIF-67 dosage of 5 mg, and a pH of 8, and the adsorption capacity at this condition was 301.69 mg/g. The mechanism of adsorption on Direct Blue-86 has been speculated to be electrostatic interaction , hydrogen bonding , Lewis acid-base interaction, π-π stacking and coordination. The kinetics of adsorption of Reactive Yellow and Congo Red in the two-component system were both consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic models , with chemisorption being the rate-controlling step and the adsorption rates of Reactive Yellow and Congo Red were both higher than that of one-component system. Meanwhile, they were more consistent with the Langmuir monolayer adsorption models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 261.10 mg/g and 291.55 mg/g, respectively, a decrease of 56.66% and 54.52% compared to that in the one-component system.

The integration of metal–organic frameworks with other functional materials has recently emerged as a promising approach for creating innovative materials for environmental remediation. Here, a nano-sized iron/nickel (Fe/Ni) functionalized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8-Fe/Ni) was fabricated for oxytetracycline (OTC) removal from wastewater. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometric I-t measurements indicated that OTC was degraded by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), transmission electron microscopy mapping (TEM-mapping) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that Fe/Ni was evenly dispersed throughout ZIF-8 and partially oxidized after reaction with OTC. OTC adsorption isotherms and kinetics best fitted the Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 > 0.982) and pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 > 0.997), respectively. Reduction kinetics data followed the pseudo-first-order model ( R 2 > 0.905), where the apparent activation energy ( E a) was 22.9 kJ mol −1 , demonstrating that OTC degradation was mainly via a chemical process. The practical removal efficiency of OTC from real wastewater by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni was 92.6%, where even after application of ZIF-8-Fe/Ni for 5 consecutive removal cycles, a high OTC removal of 74.9% was maintained. Thus ZIF-8-Fe/Ni exhibited both high removal efficiency and good recyclability .

Polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers have become an ideal material for bone tissue engineering due to a series of advantages. Considering the clinical treatment of bone defects, in addition to meeting the golden standard, PCL based nanofibers also need to be multifunctional to anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties, and enhance the bone regeneration and repair. Herein, we successfully developed the multifunctional PCL/LIG/ZIF-8 composite nanofibers by loading ZIF-8 on electrospun PCL/lignin (PCL/LIG) nanofibers. The prepared composite nanofibers exhibit fairly good wettability and acceptable degradation rate, as well as excellent antioxidative stress and antibacterial properties originating from the incorporated LIG and loaded ZIF-8. Moreover, owing to the synergistic effect of LIG and ZIF-8, the composite nanofibers present excellent osteogenic differentiation, which can be verified in biomineralization experiments and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. These results indicate that the PCL/LIG/ZIF-8 composite nanofibers, as potential healthcare candidate, have a promising applied in the treatment of bone defects.

The amino functionalization of MOFs has been verified to be effective in improving the selective permeation of CO 2 . However, the introduction of amino groups into ZIF-8 by mixed ligands strategy is hard to achieve due to the high steric hindrance of benzene ring in 2-aminobenzimidazole ligand, resulting in insufficient content of amino groups. Therefore, in this work, polystyrene-acrylate (PSA) template is proposed to provide abundant adsorption and reaction sites for the rapid synthesis of NH 2 -ZIF-8 with high content of 2-aminobenzimidazole. Furthermore, the incomplete etching strategy is used to construct PSA modified hollow NH 2 -ZIF-8 nanospheres (PHNZ). Importantly, the thickness of PSA layer and the hollow size are adjusted by the etching time, as revealed by the SEM and TEM images. In this PHNZ, the modified PSA can provide good interface compatibility between PHNZ and Pebax matrix to enhance the CO 2 selectivity, while the hollow structure can reduce the mass transfer resistance and improve the gas permeability. Moreover, the introduced amino groups can enhance the CO 2 affinity of PHNZ and further improve the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of the PHNZ-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Benefiting from the synergy of good interface compatibility and enhanced CO 2 affinity from the amino groups, the PHNZ/Pebax MMMs present greatly improved CO 2 /N 2 selectivity in contrast with pure Pebax and NH 2 -ZIF-8 based membranes. Besides, as the etching time increases, the PHNZ-2 and PHNZ-3 based MMMs present a higher CO 2 permeability than that of NH 2 -ZIF-8 based MMM, revealing the significance of the hollow structure. The PHNZ-2/Pebax MMM with filler loading of 10 wt% expresses the best gas separation performance with the CO 2 permeability of 121.9 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 96.6, respectively, showing an increase of 54.7 % and 98.0 % in contrast with pure Pebax membrane. Meanwhile, this CO 2 separation performance is far beyond the Robeson upper bound in 2008 and close to the McKeown upper bound in 2019, demonstrating that the proposed PHNZ displays a promising and competitive potential in MMM based CO 2 capture.

Polyamide nanofiltration membranes with an interlayer of either a plant polyphenol tannic acid (TA) coating to improve polyamide formation or zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (NPs) as a sacrificial template have been recently attracting great interest, although none has reported such a dual-functional interlayer. In this study, we demonstrated a facile and controllable one-pot synthesis of novel ZIF-8@TA core-shell NPs. Mixing Zn 2+ , Hmim, and TA in an aqueous solution could readily give rise to these NPs. Microscopy characterizations showed that composition and morphology of NPs could be easily controlled by the amount of TA used. Comparing with the thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane prepared with ZIF-8 NPs as an interlayer, which had significant defects in its polyamide layer due to the aggregation of hydrophobic ZIF-8 NPs, the homogeneous and hydrophilic ZIF-8@TA NPs interlayered TFN membranes demonstrated intact polyamide layers. It was found that when 0.5 mg ZIF-8@TA1.0 NPs were used, the obtained TFN membrane showed a high water permeance of 20.7 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 96.6 %, typically outperforming other interlayer-based PA membranes reported elsewhere. This work provided not only a novel interlayer material but also deep insights into design of high-performance polyamide membranes.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is one of the most promising metal–organic frameworks because of its excellent high porosity, stability and geometrically well-defined structure. However, the application of ZIF-8 in the field of fluorescent molecular sensing has not been intensively explored. Our work demonstrates the versatility of ZIF-8 as a carrier material, which can be used for small molecule [2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole (HPBI)] capture and fluorescence enhancement. ZIF-8 displays luminescent behavior changes when combined with HPBI, as the emission peaks of ZIF-8 and HPBI are located in the same range for resonance enhancement of fluorescence. The results of the experiment indicate that the fluorescence enhancement effect will change in the presence of different concentrations of HPBI. We propose that the pore structure of ZIF-8 could provide an opportunity for the adsorption of HPBI molecules, and eventually the adsorption would saturate. The high porosity of ZIF-8 provides the path to HPBI aggregation or entrance into the ZIF-8 internal structure. Our results suggest that ZIF-8 may offer great promise for molecular fluorescence sensing.

Tetracycline (TC) residues have been noted as an important class of emerging contaminants in the environment, thus fast, straightforward, highly sensitive detection method is becoming an issue that must be addressed. Herein, a novel CDs@ZIF-8 sensing material was fabricated by encapsulating luminescent carbon dots (CDs) into the metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) to achieve highly luminescent porous composites. Furthermore, to avoid the secondary contamination caused by powders, a shapable CDs@ZIF-8/CS film sensor as a portable disposable test strip with dual-function of TC detection and adsorption was designed by crosslinking CDs@ZIF-8 with chitosan (CS). The as-prepared CDs@ZIF-8/CS hybrid film exhibited the high sensitivity and selectivity for TC fluorescence detection and rapid decontaminate capability, as well as high optical transmittance and robust mechanical property, which were essential for the practical sensing application. This paper-based dual-functional luminescent sensor exhibits promising practicability for TC detection and contaminant removal in pharmaceutical analysis, food safety and water treatment.

Knowledge of the fate and transport of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in porous media is essential to understanding their environmental impacts. However, to date, the transport mechanisms of MOFs are not fully revealed. Meanwhile, surfactants can promote MOFs dispersion by forming a stable suspension. They also allow MOFs to migrate in the aqueous environment, which would increase the risks of MOFs being exposed to human health and the ecological environment. In this study, the effect of surfactants type and nanoparticle (NP) concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) were investigated using a sand column to study the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs in saturated porous media. Surfactants used were categorized into three groups, including cationic surfactants (CTAB, DTAB), anionic surfactants (SDBS, SDS), and nonionic surfactants (Tween 80, Tween 20). Experimental results showed that the ionic surfactants significantly increased the transportability of ZIF-8 NPs. Furthermore, a low concentration of NPs tended to break through the column under ionic surfactant conditions, and the maximum effluent recovery of ZIF-8 NPs (50 mg/L) was 87.4% in the presence of SDS. Nevertheless, ZIF-8 NPs tended to deposit in the inlet of the sand column in the presence of nonionic surfactants due to hydrodynamic bridging and straining. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of the deposition mechanism of ZIF-8 NPs as affected by surfactant types and NP concentrations. Most importantly, the study highlights those ionic surfactants had a significant impact on the mobility of ZIF-8 NPs, which arouses attention to the ecological and human health risk assessment related to the manufacturing of MOFs with the aid of various dispersing agents.

Construction of macroscopic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with high processability is crucial for their practical usage. Here, we demonstrate a facile metal template-guided growth approach that exploits the synthesis of forest-like ZIF-8-based material. The 3D self-supported array architecture endows the resultant ZIF-8 forests with efficient exposure of active sites, rapid mass transfer and simple recovery. Under mild catalytic reaction conditions (1 bar CO 2 , 60 ℃), ZIF-8 forests show remarkable activities toward the coupling of epoxides and CO 2 with an excellent cyclic carbonate yield of 96%, surpassing the powdered ZIF-8 crystals. Importantly, the catalytic performance can be well-maintained even after 10 cycles and under both simulated flue gas conditions and full-spectrum light irradiation, demonstrating the potential for practical catalysis. Our work provides a practical guideline to produce macroscopic MOF-based materials with great potential for industrial catalysis.
