Substrate-Immersed Solvothermal Synthesis of Ordered SiO2/Ag Arrays as Catalytic SERS Substrates

Chang Liu,Qianqian Su,Li Li,Jie Sun,Jian Dong,Weiping Qian

In this work, we designed a simple substrate-immersed solvothermal route for the one-step synthesis of novel ordered SiO 2 /Ag arrays, employing SiO 2 colloidal crystals as templates and alcohol as reducing agent. The Ag nanoparticles were uniformly deposited in situ onto SiO 2 colloidal crystals, which exhibited high surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) activity and uniform SERS intensity. It was found that ordered SiO 2 /Ag arrays could rapidly scavenge the absorbed-Nile blue A (NBA) molecules from the surfaces with the assistance of H 2 O 2 , while the SERS signals of NBA decreased sharply and almost completely disappeared within four minutes. This can be attributed to the superior catalytic activity of Ag nanoparticles. After five times of re-immersion and re-absorbing process of NBA, the substrates could still keep ∼ 74.8% SERS intensity versus the original. The high activity and durability of the as-prepared SiO 2 /Ag SERS substrate endow them as a promising candidate for trace detection.

One-Step Synthesis of Au-Ag Nanowires through Microorganism-Mediated, CTAB-Directed Approach

Luhang Xu,Dengpo Huang,Huimei Chen,Xiaoling Jing,Jiale Huang,Tareque Odoom-Wubah,Qingbiao Li

Synthesis and applications of one dimensional (1D) metal nanostructures have attracted much attention. However, one-step synthesis of bimetallic nanowires (NWs) has remained challenging. In this work, we developed a microorganism-mediated, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-directed (MCD) approach to synthesize closely packed and long Au-Ag NWs with the assistance of a continuous injection pump. Characterization results confirmed that the branched Au-Ag alloy NWs was polycrystalline. And the Au-Ag NWs exhibited a strong absorbance at around 1950 nm in the near-infrared (NIR) region, which can find potential application in NIR absorption. In addition, the Au-Ag NWs showed excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement when 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) were used as probe molecules.Keywords:microorganism-mediated;Au-Ag NWs;SERS enhancement;Pichia pastoriscells;CTAB

Synergistic effect between Ag and Mn3O4 in the gas phase oxidation of alcohols

Kun Liu,Tao Qin,Yongbin Sun,Chao Hou,Xiaoqun Cao,Shoujun Jiang

Ag 2 Mn 5 /SiC catalyst is simply obtained by in-situ reaction-induced of their corresponding nitrate compounds onto SiC support, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability in the gas phase oxidation of alcohols (94% conversion of benzyl alcohol and 98% selectivity of benzaldehyde). The catalytic activity could maintain at least 300 h after four regenerations due to the formation of highly active Ag 0 -Mn 3 O 4 species. XRD and XPS indicate that active Ag 0 -Mn 3 O 4 species is formed from Ag 2 O and MnO 2 in the reaction conditions. The synergistic effect between 34 nm Ag nanoparticles and 5.5 nm Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles in alcohol oxidation reaction is prominent, which is testified by HRTEM and three-step experiment.

One-step synthesis of Ag2S/Ag@MoS2 nanocomposites for SERS and photocatalytic applications

Wu Jie,Zhou Yifeng,Nie Wangyan,Chen Pengpeng

This paper reported a one-step synthesis of Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites and its applications in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The nanocomposites were well characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammograms (CV), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Fourier transforms infrared spectra (FTIR). The AgNPs were uniformly dispersed on the MoS 2 nanosheets and the particle size of the AgNPs was about 10–30 nm. These Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites offered sensitive SERS signals for the detection of R6G with the limit of detections as low as 10 −10  M. The photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst was studied by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under light illumination. The apparent rate constant of MB degradation for the obtained catalyst could reach 6.6 × 10 −2  min −1 , indicating that the novel Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites can be explored for organic pollutant’s detection and degradation. Indirect fabrication of Ag nanoparticle-immobilized hollow silica composite particles and their catalysis

Wang Jianing,Zheng Yan,Chen Wanyi,Wang Zhaoqun

A simple and effective method is proposed to prepare Ag nanoparticle-immobilized hollow silica particles (SiO 2 HP/AgNP composite particles). Ag 2 O nanoparticles are first immobilized on hollow silica particles (SiO 2 HP) by in situ thermolysis of AgNO 3 to get SiO 2 HP/Ag 2 ONP composite particles. Then, the Ag 2 ONPs immobilized on SiO 2 HP are translated to AgNPs by chemical or thermal reduction to obtain SiO 2 HP/AgNP composite particles. The resultant AgNPs have ultrafine nano-size and uniform and dense distribution, which benefits from the slow and moderate reaction in the formation of Ag 2 ONPs. The influencing factors including the surface property of SiO 2 HP, mass proportion of silver salt to silica, and reaction temperature have been studied. The composite particles exhibit excellent catalytic efficiency and repeatability in 4-nitrophenol reduction. Moreover, the catalytic activity can be further enhanced by adding a trace amount of NH 3 into the system, which has obvious synergies for catalysis with AgNPs.

High Thermal Conductivity and Mechanical Properties of Nanotube@Cu/Ag@Graphite/Aluminum Composites

Xiaopeng Han,Ying Huang,Qiao Gao,Meng Yu,Xuefang Chen

Weak interfacial bonding and the agglomeration of reinforcements are critical challenges for the expected performance in thermal management materials, hindering the extensive application of aluminum matrix composites. In this work, Cu particles, nanotubes, Ag-coated graphite flakes and films, urea, and starch were mixed together to fabricate porous preforms, which then were infiltrated by vacuum gas pressure at 720 °C. The effects of graphite film thickness on the microstructure and properties of thermal conductivity (TC) and coefficient of thermal expension were investigated. The nanotube@Cu/Ag@graphite/aluminum composites exhibited a high TC of 451 W/mK and excellent bending strength of 74 MPa, which were approximately increased by 48.8% and 126%, respectively, as compared with the samples without graphite film.

Effect of I/Ag molar ratio on silver thick films below 550 °C

Tang Hongbo,Li Qiuyue,Zhou Jian

The effect of low I/Ag ratios on the performance of silver thick films containing micro-sized silver particles treated with surface iodination has been investigated. The film with I/Ag ratio of 1:100 exhibited high electrical conductivity and densification, while that of 2:100 presented better adhesion. The conductivity and densification of the film reached the highest at 550 °C. Optimal conductivity of the film with I/Ag ratio of 1:100 and 2:100 was 11.45 and 15.85 mΩ/sq., respectively. In addition, the film adhesion was enhanced by heating. Different trends observed in electrical conductivity and adhesion as functions of temperature is primarily attributed to shrinkage of modified particles. This work suggested that the I/Ag ratio plays a vital effect on the performance of the silver thick film.

Superior photocatalytic disinfection effect of Ag-3D ordered mesoporous CeO2 under visible light

Qixing Zhou,Shuanglong Ma,Sihui Zhan

Ordered mesoporous Ag/CeO 2 nanocomposites were prepared by combining nanocasting with photo-assisted reduction. The heterogeneous photoreactivity of the prepared samples was tested for inactivating Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). These mesoporous Ag/CeO 2 nanocomposites exhibited superior photocatalytic disinfection efficiency than mesoporous CeO 2 and bulk CeO 2 , respectively. Doping Ag species could extend the absorption range to visible light area and enhance the concentration of Ce 3+ ions and oxygen vacancies, which had significant influence on the surface properties of CeO 2 . Moreover, it is the first time to verify that created midgap states through doping Ag can significantly lower the threshold of incident photon energy and broaden the adsorption spectrum demonstrated by experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The enhanced disinfection mechanism was attributed to the fact that the novel mesoporous structure can promote the mass transfer process and the interfacial interaction between Ag species and CeO 2 and lead to reduced recombination of free charges, rapid separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons-holes. This work provides a new method to develop novel mesoporous plasmonic photocatlysts for disinfection using solar radiation.

Hydrogels Based on Ag+-Modulated Assembly of 5′-Adenosine Monophosphate for Enriching Biomolecules

Yuanyuan Hu,Dong Xie,Yang Wu,Nangui Lin,Aixin Song,Jingcheng Hao

Graphical Stacking gels : Factors affecting the self-assembly of supramolecular hydrogels composed of combining 5′-adenosine monophosphate and Ag + are discussed (see figure). The gelation capability was enhanced by increasing the concentration of Ag + or decreasing the pH. The gels are very sensitive to light and have potential applications as photosensitive materials. Supramolecular hydrogels obtained by combining 5′-adenosine monophosphate (AMP) with Ag + were fabricated in this work. Their gelation capability was enhanced by increasing the concentration of Ag + or decreasing the pH. The gels are very sensitive to light, which endows them with potential applications as visible-light photosensitive materials. Coordination between the nucleobase of AMP and Ag + , as well as π–π stacking of nucleobases, are considered to be the main driving forces for self-assembly. The hydrogels successfully achieved the encapsulation and enrichment of biomolecules. Hydrogen bonding between the amino group of guest molecules and silver nanoparticles along the nanofibers drives the enrichment and is considered to be a crucial interaction.

Ag/Cu nanoparticles-loaded glycocalyx biomimetic corneal bandage lenses for combatting bacterial keratitis

Yan Dai,Jiali Zhang,Shimeng Zhang,Linhua Li,Chao Qu,Jiang Chen,Lei Lu

Bacterial keratitis is a major cause of blindness, hindered by the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. Although corneal bandage lenses (CBLs) are widely utilized in ophthalmic treatment, their effectiveness in treating bacterial keratitis remains limited due to risks of secondary infections, patient discomfort, and complications. In this study, we developed a novel biomimetic coating on CBLs by grafting Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag/Cu-NPs) and thiol-functionalized heparin (Hep-SH) using a rapid polydopamine (PDA) deposition technique, effectively mimicking the ocular surface glycocalyx structure. The resulting Ag/Cu-NPs/Hep-SH coated CBLs (PNH-CBLs) exhibited significant antibacterial activity, with over 80 % reduction in Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and 70 % in Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) due to the sustained release of Ag + and Cu 2+ , along with displaying favorable in vitro biocompatibility. Animal experiments conducted on New Zealand white rabbits with bacterial keratitis demonstrated successful treatment therapeutic outcomes, with PNH-CBLs leading to a significant decrease in clinical score. These biomimetic lenses also exhibited selective anti-protein adsorption properties, minimizing inflammation and promoting surface lubrication. Overall, this innovative approach addresses critical challenges in antibiotic resistance and offers a promising therapeutic strategy for managing ophthalmic infectious diseases.

Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Fe3O4@Polydopamine@Ag Hybrid Nanoparticles for Liquid Marble and Oil Spill

Ben Wang,Yang Liu,Yabin Zhang,Zhiguang Guo,Hong Zhang,John H. Xin,Li Zhang

Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag NPs evenly distributed on the surface are fabricated by using polydopamine (PDA) as the intermediate layer. Silanization and thiol chemistry are used to firmly combine the Fe 3 O 4 @ PDA core and outer surface Ag NPs. The spherical and hybrid nanoparticles are termed Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs, which possess a core–shell and hierarchical structure. After surface modification with 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecanethiol, the hybrid Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs become highly hydrophobic. Slight rolling of a water droplet on the as-prepared NPs causes the formation of a “liquid marble”, which is capable of performing remote actuation on various solid surfaces, such as glass sheet, paper, plastic, textile, and ceramic, and at the liquid–air interface using a permanent magnet. Liquid marbles with self-assembled NPs on the liquid surface have potential to act as a miniaturized reactor for manipulation of inner liquid droplet with high positioning precision. In addition, the Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs are multifunctional and can be applied for oil/water separation and antibacterial purpose.

Core–Shell AgCl@SiO2 Nanoparticles: Ag(I)-Based Antibacterial Materials with Enhanced Stability

Peng Tan,Yan-Hua Li,Xiao-Qin Liu,Yao Jiang,Lin-Bing Sun

Silver (Ag)-based nanoparticles are one type of highly effective antimicrobial widely used in medical devices, consumer products, and wound dressing. Although Ag(I) rather than Ag(0) is the active species in antibacterial processes, the use of Ag(I) as antibacterial materials is hindered by its instability toward light irradiation. In this paper, we report the fabrication of core–shell AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles, which comprise a core of AgCl nanoparticles and a shell of porous silica, for antibacterial applications for the first time. The porous silica shells not only enhance the stability of AgCl by preventing the core from direct light irradiation but also allow active Ag(I) to pass through continuously to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It is worth noting that the synthesis is achieved by a facile one-pot method in which the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride used for the formation of AgCl nanoparticles also acts as a structure-directing agent in the subsequent creation of porous silica. Our results show that the obtained AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibit well-defined core–shell structure and are highly efficient in the growth inhibition of Escherichia coli. More importantly, the stability of Ag(I) toward light irradiation is greatly enhanced by the protection of the silica shell. The convenient fabrication, well-defined core–shell structure, and enhanced stability make AgCl@SiO2 nanoparticles highly promising for antibacterial applications.
