Synergy FeX (X = S, C, P) nanoparticles with Fe-N-C single-atom sites in carbon nanofibers for efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis in Zn-air batteries

Kexin Wei,Haoyang Yu,Fan Yang,Yang Sun,Shijia Li,Jiabao Guo,Yongfeng Li

To advance the development of high-performance rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with efficient oxygen electrochemistry, significant progress is needed in research on Fe-based nanoparticle/single-atom bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, the structure-activity relationship and synergy mechanism of Fe-based nnoparticle/single-atom hybrid catalysts are not well-known. Herein, Self-supported carbon nanofiber electrocatalysts with in-situ synthesized FeS, Fe 2 P, or Fe 3 C nanoparticles and atomically dispersed Fe-N x sites were prepared in this work by the coaxial electrospinning method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations showed that there was a significant change in charge distribution, an increase in the adsorption of *O intermediates, and a decrease in the *OH desorption energy barrier at the FeS/FeSA interface. It can be concluded that FeS/FeSA has better electronic and adsorption properties than Fe 2 P/FeSA and Fe 3 C/FeSA. Therefore, FeS/FeSA has an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) half-wave potential of 0.89 V and an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , which is relatively high compared with that of Fe 2 P/FeSA (0.79 V, 260 mV) and Fe 3 C/FeSA (0.77 V, 250 mV), and it has a small potential gap (Δ E ) of 0.58 V. FeS/FeSA can be used as the air cathode in liquid ZABs; it has a high peak power density of 116 mW/cm 2 and is stable for more than 150 hours. The above results have laid the foundation for the construction of high-performance air cathode catalysts by means of effective coupling of atomic nanoparticles and shown the direction for developing high-efficiency, long-life rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Involvement of increased expression of chemokine C–C motif chemokine 22 (CCL22)/CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) in the inflammatory injury and cartilage degradation of chondrocytes

Xu Haiqiao,Lin Shibang,Huang Haizhou

CCL22, which could induce chondrocyte apoptosis, was identified to be overexpressed in damaged cartilage. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effects of CCL22 interference on chondrocyte injury. The osteoarthritis model was established by stimulating chondrocytes with LPS. The expressions of CCL22, CCR4, matrix metallopeptidase (MMP) 3, MMP9, MMP13, (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin-like motifs) ADAMTS-4, collagen II and inflammatory cytokines were measured using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blot. Besides, immunoprecipitation (IP) was employed to verify the binding of CCL22 and CCR4. After CCR4 was overexpressed, cell viability was observed using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). Additionally, cell apoptosis as well as its related proteins was detected by TUNEL and western blot, respectively. ng What’s more, glycosaminoglycan (GAG) level was detected using GAG kits. CCL22 and CCR4 expression increased noticeably in LPS-stimulated ATDC5 chondrocytes. CCL22 inhibition could suppress the expression of CCR4 in LPS-induced ATDC5 cells. Likewise, CCL22 inhibition could revive the activation of LPS-induced ATDC5 cells by regulating CCR4. In addition, CCL22 knockdown alleviated inflammatory response and cell apoptosis through CCR4. Furthermore, the cartilage degradation of ADTC5 cells could be relieved by CCL22 silence via regulating CCR4. CCL22/CCR4 expression was increased in osteoarthritic cartilage injury and participated in the inflammation and cartilage degradation of chondrocytes.

Efficient and green catalytic degradation of high crosslinked rigid PU foam and recovery value-added products via selective cleavage of C–O and C–N bonds

Hongyan Li,Xianglin Hou,Lin Chai,Xiaojing Cui,Yingxiong Wang,Tiansheng Deng

The degradation and recovery of waste rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) have confronted enormous challenge because of its three-dimensional network. An efficient strategy was developed for chemical recycling of high value-added aromatic polyamines and polyether polyols via selective cleavage of carbamate and urea bonds from RPUF and characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Ray (FT-IR). The carbamate and urea bonds were readily cleaved using (NH 2 ) 2 CO/CH 3 CH 2 OH as degradation system at 180 °C for 10 h. Nevertheless, the C–C bonds and C–O–C of ether linkages as framework structure remained intact in the degradation process. Eventually, the high value-added products including aromatic polyamines and polyether polyols were retrieved. A feasible mechanism for degradation was proposed based on the NMR observations.

One-Pot Enzymatic Synthesis of Cyclic Vicinal Diols from Aliphatic Dialdehydes via Intramolecular C−C Bond Formation and Carbonyl Reduction Using Pyruvate Decarboxylases and Alcohol Dehydrogenases

Yan Zhang,Peiyuan Yao,Yunfeng Cui,Qiaqing Wu,Dunming Zhu

An enzymatic cascade reaction was developed for one-pot enantioselective conversion of aliphatic dialdehydes to chiral vicinal diols using pyruvate decarboxylases (PDCs) and alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs). The PDCs showed promiscuity in catalysing the cyclization of aliphatic dialdehydes through intramolecular stereoselective carbon-carbon bond formation. Consequently, 1,2-cyclopentanediols in three different stereoisomeric forms and 1,2-cyclohexanediols in two different stereoisomeric forms could be prepared with high conversion and stereoisomeric ratio from the respective initial substrates, glutaraldehyde and adipaldehyde. These cascade reactions represent a promising approach to the biocatalytic synthesis of important chiral vicinal diols.

Intramolecular Ring–Chain Equilibrium Elimination Strategy for Pinpointing C═C Positional and Geometric Isomers of N-Alkylpyridinium Unsaturated Fatty Acid Derivatives via Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry

Yuling Li,Jiahui Bai,Kuofeng Tseng,Xiaoqiang Zhang,Li Zhang,Jing Zhang,Wenjian Sun,Yinlong Guo

Free unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) are key intermediates of lipid metabolism and participate in many metabolic pathways with specific biological functions. Although various fragmentation-based methods for pinpointing C═C locations in UFA were developed, the current mass spectrometry methods are difficult to simultaneously differentiate geometric isomers and positional isomers in trace samples due to low ionization efficiency, low conversion, and low resolution. Herein, an intramolecular ring–chain equilibrium elimination strategy via 4-plex stable isotope labeling dual derivatization-assisted ion mobility-mass spectrometry was developed, thereby one-pot specifically labeling C═C and carboxyl groups among the trace and unstable UFA with high sensitivity, high efficiency, and good substrate generality. It achieved fast separation of both C═C positional and geometric isomers with high resolution, which benefited from eliminating the intramolecular ring–chain equilibrium by suppressing the formation of salt bridges between free carboxyl groups and pyridine cations. 4-plex stable isotope labeling reagents showed similar reactivity, enabling high-throughput quantitative analysis of omics. This method was successfully applied for accurate and rapid identification of the UFA composition in olive oil extract. These results suggest that the developed method provides new insight for rapid characterization of UFA C═C positional and geometric isomers in complex samples to explore disease biomarkers and food quality control indicators.

Comb-shaped cationic bridges in phosphoric acid-doped PBI gel membranes: A pathway to flexible and efficient fuel cell operation from −20 °C to 200 °C

Chao Chen,Yan Chen,Bing Zhao,Mingjie Ma,Ningbo Wang,Zheng Li,Yunchu Cheng,Ling Zhou,Congjie Gao,Fei Huang,Lixin Xue

Phosphoric acid (PA)-doped high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) face significant challenges from PA leaching, particularly under low temperatures, which severely compromises their operational durability and flexibility. Herein, we developed innovative polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based PEMs featuring a comb-shaped cationic bridge structure, synthesized via a combined polyphosphoric acid process and heterogeneous free radical polymerization. The resulting membranes exhibited a distinctive porous microstructure characterized by aligned nanosheet arrangements and double dense skin layers, effectively suppressing PA leaching. Strong ion-pair interactions between imidazolium cations and biphosphate enhanced PA retention and promoted PA dissociation, substantially improving proton conductivity. The optimized PA/PBI-AMim-2 membrane achieved exceptional proton conductivity, exceeding 10 mS/cm at −20 °C and reaching 0.34 S/cm at 220 °C, enabling efficient fuel cell operation across a wide temperature range. It demonstrated outstanding single-cell performance, delivering peak power densities of 820 mW/cm 2 at 80 °C and 1605 mW/cm 2 at 160 °C, along with cold start-up capability of 46 mW/cm 2 at −20 °C. Its superior PA retention ensured stable performance with a minimal decay rate of 23.7 μV/h at 40 °C and enabled reliable functionality through 100 frequent start-up/shutdown cycles. This breakthrough bridges the gap between conventional low-temperature and high-temperature PEMFCs, paving the way for robust, flexible and durable systems under real-world operating conditions.

Inhibition of histone deacetylase 6 alleviates neuropathic pain via direct regulating post-translation of spinal STAT3 and decreasing downstream C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 7 synthesis

Chi Zhexi,Lu Bo,Liu Rongjun,Pan Chen,Meng Bo,Xing Xiuzhong,Yuan Hui,Wu Xuewei,Chen Yushan,Ren Yuxuan,Wu Wenwei,Miao Mengmeng,Chen Junping,Chen Xiaowei

Neuropathic pain, a debilitating nerve injury-induced condition, remains a significant clinical challenge. This study evaluates the effect of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) inhibition in a spared nerve injury (SNI) mouse model. Systemic administration of the selective HDAC6 inhibitor ACY-1215 (20 mg/kg/day, 14 days), alleviated SNI-induced pain in mice of both sexes. ACY-1215 increased acetylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Ac-STAT3) and reduced phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3) in the lumbar spinal cord of SNI mice. HDAC6 and p-STAT3 were expressed in spinal dorsal horn neurons, and SNI-enhanced HDAC6/STAT3 interaction was reversed by ACY-1215. Neuronal STAT3 overexpression induced pain hypersensitivity and elevated p-STAT3, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), effects suppressed by ACY-1215. Cytokine profiling identified CC-chemokine ligand 7 (CCL7) as a key downstream effector of the HDAC6/STAT3 axis, with ACY-1215 attenuating SNI-induced CCL7 upregulation. HDAC6 knockdown in neurons reduced p-STAT3, while HDAC6 or STAT3 knockdown diminished CCL7 production. These findings demonstrate that ACY-1215 mitigates neuropathic pain by modulating STAT3 acetylation/phosphorylation and suppressing HDAC6/STAT3-driven CCL7 and cytokine release. This study underscores the role of the HDAC6/STAT3/CCL7 signaling axis in neuropathic pain and highlights the therapeutic potential of HDAC6 inhibitors for pain management.

c-Myc-PANK3-EMT axis regulates the structure and function of intestinal barrier in ulcerative colitis c-Myc-PANK3-EMT axis regulates UC intestinal barrier integrity

Shize Zhang,Yuang Chen,Nan Aa,Chen Xu,Tao Xie,Yi Wang,Tian Cheng,Mengqin Wang,Hong Yu,Xinqiang Ji,Song Zhao,Yaohui Wang,Jun Xiao,Yuan Xie,Guangji Wang,Jiye Aa

Introduction The repair of structural damage of the intestinal barrier is critical to rescue ulcerative colitis (UC), but there lacks effective targets currently. Objectives This study aims to explore mechanisms and identify potential targets for repairing the damaged intestinal barrier involved in UC. Methods Nontargeted metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses were utilized to characterize the metabolic features of DSS-induced colitis and identify potential therapeutic targets. Pantothenate kinase 3 (PANK3) was pharmacologically and genetically modulated to elucidate its mechanistic role. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase reporter assays were employed to identify upstream regulators of PANK3, and PANK3 agonists were screened by high-throughput docking and further confirmed by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Results Metabolomic data indicated that perturbed metabolism involves pantothenate kinase. Clinical database, qPCR, WB, and immunohistochemical staining revealed a significant decrease of PANK3 in both patients and murine models of colitis. Pharmacological activation or overexpression of PANK3 restored the integrity of the intestinal barrier in UC mice, whereas PANK3 knockdown or inhibition exacerbated barrier dysfunction. PANK3 is negatively regulated by upstream c-Myc, and affects downstream, epithelial‒mesenchymal transition (EMT). In general, elevated c-Myc suppressed PANK3 transcription, promoted the EMT process and induced barrier disruption. The natural vitamin folic acid was identified as an agonist of PANK3, which could markedly improve the intestinal barrier in DSS-induced colitis. Conclusion The c-Myc-PANK3-EMT axis plays a critical role in preserving the structure and function of intestinal barrier. PANK3 is a potential target and folic acid is a candidate agonist of PANK3 to repair intestinal barrier in UC.

Effect of carbon and nitrogen double vacancies on the improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over porous carbon nitride nanosheets

Huihui Li,Fuchun Ning,Xiaofei Chen,Anye Shi

Porous carbon nitride nanosheets with carbon and nitrogen double vacancies have been synthesized by a soft template-supported one-pot method. Besides their highly defined and unambiguous structure, they also show minimal thickness and high crystallinity. This porous carbon nitride exhibits great enhancement in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (297.6 μmol h−1), which is 9.6 times higher than 31.2 μmol h−1 of the pristine one. An apparent quantum yield of 12.7% at 420 nm for hydrogen production can be achieved over these porous nanosheets. The detailed investigation suggests that there are carbon vacancies along with nitrogen vacancies. Besides nitrogen vacancies, carbon vacancies also play a positive role in the improvement of hydrogen evolution. In addition, the photocatalytic performance especially hydrogen evolution increases with the increase of the C/N ratio.

Multideuteration of Nitroaromatics by Silver-Catalyzed Hydrogen-Isotope Exchange

Jianbo Tang,Junhua Kong,Hui Xu,Zhi-Jiang Jiang,Yifan She,Jianfei Bai,Bencan Tang,Jia Chen,Zhanghua Gao,Kun Gao

Silver-catalyzed deuteration of nitroaromatics has been achieved using D2O as the deuterium source. Distinct from the well-established directing group-guided hydrogen-isotope exchange, this protocol showed an interesting deuteration pattern, where considerable deuterium accumulation was observed around the aromatic rings. Controlling experiments suggested that the deuteration was initiated by a silver-promoted C–H activation. Therefore, a tentative two-stage deuteration mechanism involving aryl-silver species was proposed to explain the deuteration on meta- and para-positions.

Mesoporous carbon promoting the efficiency and stability of single atomic electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Xilong Wang,Hongwei Zhu,Chen Yang,Jiajia Lu,Lirong Zheng,Han-Pu Liang

Single-atom Fe–N–C electrocatalysts are attracting more attentions as one most promising transition metal based single-atom catalyst towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the inaccessibility of internal Fe-N x active sites and insufficient stability hinder their large-scale application. Herein, a facile benzoate-assisted self-template strategy which could dramatically enhance the oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance and stability of ZIF-8 derived atomically dispersed Fe–N–C catalysts (Fe-SA/Meso-C) is developed. The sodium benzoate used in the present work is effective for promoting the formation of Fe–N–C catalysts with denser accessible active sites as well as mesopores with diameters ranging from 2.5 to 5 nm. These structural advantages make the synthesized Fe-SA/Meso-C catalysts afford excellent electrocatalytic performance for the ORR in 0.1 M KOH with a positive half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.926 V vs. RHE and exceptionally high kinetic current density (J k ) of 92.5 mA cm −2 at 0.85 V. Beyond that, Fe-SA/Meso-C shows outstanding long-term stability with over 90% activity retain after 90 h chronoamperometry i-t test as well as superior tolerance to methanol crossover . More importantly, the assembled zinc-air battery with Fe-SA/Meso-C as the cathode material achieves a high peak power density of 166.2 mW cm −2 and a high specific capacity of 776.1 mA h g −1 . Our results reveal that small mesopores in atomically dispersed Fe–N–C electrocatalysts could facilitate mass transport, increase the accessibility of active sites and optimize the interface between electrolyte and carbon matrix, thus optimizing their electrocatalytic performance for the ORR. This work paves a way to the design and synthesis of stable single-atom electrocatalysts with optimized structure, electrochemical performance and promising applications.

Relationships between antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activities of tartary buckwheat during germination

Zhou Xiaoli,Hao Tingfeng,Zhou Yiming,Tang Wen,Xiao Ying,Meng Xiaoxiao,Fang Xiang

Relationships of changes between major non-enzymatic antioxidant compounds and antioxidant capacities of tartary buckwheat during germination were evaluated by means of correlation analysis and principal component analysis in this paper. The changes of antioxidant compounds, including vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids, carotenoids, and chlorophyll, and antioxidant activities were detected. A good accumulation in the content of vitamin C (0.71 mg/g), total flavonoids (19.53 mg rutin/g), and rutin (11.34 mg/g) was found after 7-day germination, but germination decreased the vitamin E activity. Germination improved the activities of buckwheat extracts to scavenge DPPH, ABTS, and superoxide free radicals by 107, 144, and 88 %, respectively. Furthermore, the correlation and principal component analysis showed that the vitamin C, total flavonoids, and rutin contents were closely related positively with free radicals scavenging properties, indicating that the compounds which play a key role in the elevated antioxidant activities during germination consisted of vitamin C, total flavonoids, and rutin, but not vitamin E and quercetin.
