Deep insight into regulation mechanism of band distribution in phase junction CdS for enhanced photocatalytic H2 production

Lei Zhang,Zhiyuan Jiang,Jingru Guo,Chao Zhang,Xiaolong Xu,Dong Shi,Yongliang Shao,Zizheng Ai,Yongzhong Wu,Xiaopeng Hao

An in-depth understanding of structure-activity relationship between the phase constitution and solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency is conducive to guiding the optimization route of targeted photocatalyst candidates, further establishing advanced photocatalytic systems. Herein, based on the concept of phase engineering, we encompassed the crystalline phase of CdS and achieved precise regulation of phase proportion as well as phase boundary width in the phase junction for the first time. The above cooperative effect not only modifies energy band distribution for sufficient redox potentials, but also guarantees the reverse migration orientation of photogenerated carriers in phase junction, thereby endowing photocarriers with a prolonged lifetime. Compared to pure cubic or hexagonal phase (72.6 or 101.1 μmol h −1 g −1 ), this CdS system with optimized phase junction demonstrates an improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of 1.04 mmol h −1 g −1 and favorable stability without cocatalyst assistance, which mainly stems from an efficient protons reduction process interacting with long-lived photogenerated electrons. This research explores the mechanism behind phase regulation and its relationship with junction capability, providing a powerful strategy to manipulate crystal phase distribution and paving a feasible avenue for other phase-dependent photocatalysts towards rational design of heterostructures based on different phases in solar energy conversion field.

CDs/Fe2O3 composite catalyst and its effect on the thermal decomposition and ignition combustion of TKX-50

Zhen Zhang,Fengqi Zhao,Ming Zhang,Yifan Jiang,Zhao Qin,Wengang Qu,Chao Chen,Jiankan Zhang

The carbon dots (CDs) were obtained by oxidation etching of coal pitch powder with peroxic acid. The CDs/Fe 2 O 3 composites were in-situ prepared by hydrothermal method. The composition, morphology and structure of CDs and CDs/Fe 2 O 3 were analyzed by TEM/HRTEM, XRD, EDS and XPS. The effects of CDs, Fe 2 O 3 and CDs/Fe 2 O 3 on the thermal decomposition of TKX-50 were studied by DSC-MS-FTIR and in-situ-solid FTIR. The three materials decreased the peak temperature of TKX-50 by 12.1, 33.9 and 39.0℃ (under the warming rate of 10℃·min −1 ). The CDs/Fe 2 O 3 showed best catalytic performance. The carboxyl group contained on the surface of CDs adsorbed NH 3 , inhibiting the formation of by-decomposition products ABTOX. Besides assimilating NH 3 and restraining the agglomeration of Fe 2 O 3 , the CDs/Fe 2 O 3 provided more active sites for decomposition which reduce the decomposition and activation energy of TKX-50 and promoted the reaction. Furthermore, CDs/Fe 2 O 3 reduced the ignition delay time of TKX-50 and significantly increased the flame propagation speed and flame area. Therefore, CDs and its compound CDs/Fe 2 O 3 have excellent application prospects in solid propellant combustion catalysts.

High-performance ratiometric fluorescence detection and removal of tetracycline in milk based on CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3+

Yuchi Zhang,Le Han,Bohan Li,Yan Xu

Exploring materials with the dual functionality of detecting and removing tetracycline (TC) residues is crucial because of the environmental and health risks posed by antibiotic overuse. This study introduces a dual-emissive luminescent probe, CDs@ZSM-5:Eu 3+ , created through a solvent-free method combined with subsequent Eu 3+ ion exchange. The nanocomposite's blue emission, originating from carbon dots (CDs), is quenched by TC via an internal filtering effect, while an antenna effect triggers a strong red fluorescence of a TC-Eu 3+ chelate. The ratiometric fluorescence changes in CDs@ZSM-5:Eu 3+ endow a self-calibrated sensing mechanism for TC, offering a low detection limit of 5.04 nM and a broad detection range of 0.01–50 μM. Demonstrated in real milk samples, the probe exhibits high selectivity and accuracy in detecting TC. The nanocomposite also displayed an impressive TC removal capacity of 238.1 mg g −1 in water, ascribing to the enrichment and electrostatic attraction effects of ZSM-5 toward TC molecules. This research offers a facile strategy for constructing multifunctional zeolite-based hybrids for simultaneous TC detection and removal from aqueous solutions.

Fabricating an ohmic junction of Ag/CdS for highly efficient multi-electron reduction of CO2 to CH4

Chaoqiang Li,Xiangyu Xu,Aizhong Jia

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to chemical fuels is a promising strategy to alleviate the greenhouse effect and energy crisis. This article successfully fabricated Ag/CdS composites with ohmic junction using a two-step method and further verified them by DFT calculations. Meanwhile, photoelectrochemical and electron paramagnetic resonance tests show that Ag/CdS has higher photocurrent density and lower charge transfer resistance, suggesting that the ohmic junction achieves ultrafast electron transfer from CdS to Ag under light irradiation, significantly promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the localized plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag enhances the light absorption of the catalyst and generates a large number of hot electrons for the photocatalytic reduction reaction. The synergistic effect of ohmic junction and LSPR gives high electron density at the reaction site, which promotes the multiple proton-coupled electron reactions leading to highly selective photoconversion of CO 2 to CH 4 . Under the optimized conditions, the CH 4 yield of the synthesized Ag/CdS is 68.6 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 25.4 times higher than that of bare CdS, and the CH 4 selectivity increases from 53.8% to 90.1%. This study provides a new idea for the design of CdS-based materials for highly selective reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 .

Fabrication of CdS/Ni-MOF bifunctional catalyst for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution coupled with benzyl alcohol’s oxidation

Cheng Guo,Xuehai Ren,Changyan Guo,Naeem Akram,Muhammad Saad Mansha,Ali Ahmad,Saman Khawaja,Jide Wang

In this study, the CdS/Ni-MOF74 (CNM) photocatalyst was synthesized via the combination of CdS with the advantageous properties of MOFs. The composites exhibit a wide visible absorption and photo electron-hole separation efficiency, thus giving improved bifunctional properties for H 2 evolution in conjunction with the benzyl alcohol’s oxidation. The results indicate that as synthesized CNM3 catalyst shows excellent efficiency of hydrogen evolution having an evolution rate of 5783 µmol g −1 h −1 , and the amount of benzaldehyde generated after benzyl alcohol’s oxidation reached 8059.8 µmol g −1 . After four cycles, the H 2 evolution efficiency remained at 5351 µmol g −1 h −1 . According to experiments using radical trapping and mechanistic investigations, it was revealed that the photogenerated holes (h + ) were the key species mainly responsible for benzaldehyde production as well as H 2 evolution. This research work could lead to new approaches resulting in simultaneous organic oxidation processes and hydrogen evolution by using MOF-derived hybrid photocatalysts.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted One-Step Large-Scale Synthesis of Cs2ZrCl6:CDs Composites with Tunable Multicolor Afterglow Emission

Mengyan Cao,Xiujian Zhao,Xiao Gong

The strategy of utilizing all-inorganic lead-free perovskites as the matrix to form synergies with complementary functional nanomaterials has attracted great interest. In this study, a simplified one-pot method that is employed to combine carbon dots with the all-inorganic perovskites Cs 2 ZrCl 6 to form a novel nano/microstructured composite is reported. The abundant functional groups on the surface of the carbon dots can effectively form coordination bonds with the Zr 4+ ions in Cs 2 ZrCl 6 , realizing the effective dispersion of the carbon dots in the matrix. The composite not only introduces a synergistic interaction between carbon dots and Cs 2 ZrCl 6 , but also exhibits novel afterglow emission. This afterglow emission arises from the synergistic immobilization of triple excitons in a 3D spatially confined and rigid environment, thereby suppressing non-radiative excitation processes. Tunable afterglow emission over the entire spectral range is achieved through control of the carbon source reactants, highlighting the outstanding versatility of this composite approach. This composite exhibits dual-mode fluorescence and afterglow emission, holding tremendous potential for applications in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Electronic Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of Dual Z-Scheme CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 Heterostructures with a Full Spectrum

Dan Han,Wei Mo,Ning Yang,Lei Zuo,Qinghua Sun,Xianghua Zeng

Two-dimensional Bi2S3 is considered a better photocatalyst when combined with CdS. To deeply understand electronic structures between CdS and Bi2S3, CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell nanorods (NRs) were synthesized with a two-step hydrothermal method, and CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 composites were obtained with MoS2 nanoparticles decorated on the surface of CdS@Bi2S3 NRs. Then, the energy band alignments in CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 were constructed from XPS and UPS measurements, and dual z-scheme CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructures were confirmed from charge transfer with electron spin resonance (ESR) signals of •O2– and •OH. Finally, the photocatalytic hydrogen activities were carried out with the prepared samples. The results showed that the optimized CdS@Bi2S3 core–shell NRs have a hydrogen production rate of 4.29 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 8.4 times higher than that of the pure CdS nanorods, and the optimized CdS@Bi2S3–MoS2 heterostructure has a hydrogen production rate of 8.72 mmol·h–1·g–1, which is 17 times higher than that of the pure CdS NRs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the dual z-scheme heterostructure and full-spectrum absorption; the former is favorable for the efficient separation of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and the latter is beneficial to the production of more photogenerated carriers. The studies will be helpful to understand the electronic structures of Bi2S3 and the related heterostructures.

Accelerated “Electron Converter” Characteristics of NiCo-LDH for a CdS-Carbide Photocatalytic System with a Dual Heterointerface

Xujing Ji,Jiayang Zhang,Na Li,Lijing Qiu,Guoqing Zhang,Xinping Duan,Ruixin Wang

Accelerating the electron transfer and thus inhibiting recombination of photogenerated carriers hold paramount significance for photocatalytic solar hydrogen generation. Introducing an intermediate transition layer in the Schottky junction structure would modulate the Schottky barrier and thus enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Herein, we insert an efficient NiCo-layered-double-hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) lamina between molybdenum carbide-supported reduced graphene oxide (Mo2C/rGO, abbreviated as MG) and CdS, fabricating the sandwich composite CdS@NiCo-LDH@Mo2C/rGO (noted as CLMG) for photogenerated hydrogen. The inserted NiCo-LDH enables the dual heterogeneous interface phase of CdS/NiCo-LDH and NiCo-LDH/Mo2C and decreases the Schottky barrier of CdS/Mo2C, boosting the electron transfer of CLMG. In addition, the experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the work functions increase in the order of CdS < NiCo-LDH < Mo2C. Benefiting from the unique nanoarchitecture of the catalyst, the unidirectional cascade electron transport is realized following the order of CdS → NiCo-LDH → Mo2C with NiCo-LDH as an accelerated “electron converter”, which eventually expedites the photogenerated electron transfer of CdS to Mo2C and boosts carrier separation as well as the hydrogen reduction of the integrated system, achieving a 135 times greater H2 production rate (58.07 mmol g–1 h–1) than pristine CdS (0.43 mmol g–1 h–1). Moreover, CLMG exhibits excellent durability.

Comparative study on the mechanism in photocatalytic degradation of different-type organic dyes on SnS2 and CdS

Xi Li,Jian Zhu,Hexing Li

The photocatalytic performances of the SnS 2 and the CdS under the irradiation of visible light were investigated by using different organic dyes as reactants. The photodegradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond on the SnS 2 followed a reduction mechanism with photoelectrons via the Sn IV /Sn II transition while the photodegradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond on the CdS and the photodegradation of organic dyes without N N double bond on either the SnS 2 or the CdS followed an oxidation mechanism with O 2 − and OH radicals. The SnS 2 exhibited much higher activity than the CdS during the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes containing N N double bond, since the reduction of reactant molecules on the SnS 2 surface was much faster than the migration of either the O 2 − or the OH radicals. However, the SnS 2 displayed even lower activity than the CdS in the photocatalytic degradation of other organic dyes without N N double bond, since all these reactions followed the oxidation mechanism and the SnS 2 displayed a lower efficiency than the CdS in producing O 2 − or OH radicals due to the presence of the Sn IV /Sn II transition.

Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by CdS quantum dots biosynthesized by cysteine synthetase TtCsa1 from Tetrahymena thermophila

Wenliang Lei,Juan Liu,Wenyong Zhang,Jing Xu,Tao Bo,Zhiwen Wang,Wei Wang

H 2 S is a crucial endogenous gaseous signaling molecule involved in various metabolic pathways and is associated with the biological response to heavy metal stress. The biomineralization of CdS serves as a critical mechanism for responding to cadmium stress and removing Cd 2+ in different organisms. CdS is also a widely utilized semiconductor material for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. In this study, we found that cysteine synthetase 1 (TtCsa1) is involved in CdS formation under cadmium stress in Tetrahymena thermophila . TtCsa1 also catalyzed CdS formation in vitro, and the synthesized CdS material exhibited controllable particle size and photoluminescence. Concurrently, cysteine and glutathione functioned as capping agents to regulate CdS particle size. The biosynthetically produced CdS degraded 90 % of methylene blue under UV light. Furthermore, CdS-ZnS nanocomposites were synthesized by adding Zn 2+ into the CdS biosynthetic system, which decreased the size of CdS particles and increased the degradation rate of methylene blue. The results indicate that the CdS biosynthesized by TtCsa1 from Tetrahymena thermophila is effective in the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

Preparation of Cu-doped CdS quantum dots coated with biocompatible carboxymethyl chitosan for near infrared fluorescence imaging

Weiting Zhong,Jiaqi Lu,Jun Hou,Hui Li,Lixia Ma,Xu Zhang,Yanbao Zhao

In this study, water soluble Cu-doped CdS quantum dots (Cu:CdS QDs) were synthesized by one-pot method. The effect of reaction conditions on the Cu:CdS QDs were studied systematically, and the Cu:CdS QDs synthesized under optimizing condition possessed a small size (∼4 nm), high luminance and good self-fluorescence performance. Compared with CdS QDs, the fluorescence emission was redshifted from 627 nm to 720 nm. To reduce cytotoxicity of Cu:CdS QDs, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) molecules were selected to be grafting onto the surface of Cu:CdS QDs through amide bonds and the CMCS modification would greatly impede the release of cadmium ions . Both in vitro cellular cytotoxicity and hemolysis assay demonstrated that the CMCS/Cu:CdS QDs were highly biocompatible and the CMCS/Cu:CdS QDs as fluorescent probes were successfully applied in vivo imaging of small animals and this QDs can be easily metabolized by mice over time without adverse reactions . This new nanoprobes open up exciting opportunities for future biomedical applications .

Polyethylene glycol/melamine foam composite phase change materials modified by CdS/Ag exhibits high photothermal conversion performance

Yichi Liu,Yi Liu,Wenjing Chen,Xiaowu Hu,Yinshui He,Yan Ma,Yuqiong Xie,Wenxing Luo,Lixiang Luo,Lan Jiang,Xiongxin Jiang,Qinglin Li

CdS has been shown to be an excellent photon trap with strong absorption of light at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The use of CdS for phase change material (PCM) modification can significantly improve its photothermal conversion performance. However, due to the unique energy band structure of CdS, the difficulty in electron conduction leads to poor thermal conductivity . This problem can be improved by introducing high thermal conductivity nanometals for modification, however, the effective combination of CdS and nanometals has been challenging. In this study, a new preparation strategy is demonstrated, in which Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with similar lattice parameters and crystalline coordination to CdS is first introduced on the surface of carbonized melamine foam (CMF), followed by the introduction of CdS NPs. This similar structure helps to form a better interfacial bond between CdS and Ag. The resulting stabilized structure enables the composite phase change material (CPCM) to achieve 96.1 % PEG loading with an ultra-high photothermal conversion efficiency of 94.6 %, thermal conductivity of 0.61 W/m∙K, and excellent antimicrobial activity. This study provides valuable guidance for the engineering design of CPCM with high photothermal conversion performance and suggests its practical application value in seawater evaporation and thermal management of medical devices .
