Efficient one-pot synthesis of ethyl levulinate from carbohydrates catalyzed by Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid supported on Ce–Si pillared montmorillonite

Fengjiao Lai,Feng Yan,Pengju Wang,Fan Qu,Xuehua Shen,Zuotai Zhang

Efficient conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates to alkyl levulinates is an important goal of biorefinery process, but is still challenging on applicable catalyst. Ce–Si pillared montmorillonite (CeSiM) clay heterostructures , incorporated with Wells-Dawson tungstophosphoric acid (H 6 P 2 W 18 O 64 , DPW), were prepared for the first time and used as the multifunctional catalyst for direct production of ethyl levulinate (EL) from various biomass-derived sugars. The DPW introduced by sol-gel method (DPW-CeSiM) has been effectively incorporated into the framework of porous CeSiM, while part of DPW was just absorbed on the surface of CeSiM by impregnation method (DPW-CeSiM-I). The DPW-CeSiM catalyst has large specific surface area owing to the insertion of Ce–Si pillars, and possesses strong Brønsted acidity and moderate Lewis acidity originated from the incorporated DPW and the Ce-doping, respectively. Due to the well synergistic effect of porous structure and dual acid, the DPW-CeSiM catalyst efficiently catalyzed the conversion of glucose into EL with 56.2% yield and nearly 100% conversion at 170 °C for 4 h. The recyclability studies certified that DPW-CeSiM catalyst showed higher stability than DPW-CeSiM-I over cycles and could be easily recovered from consecutive alcoholysis of biomass-derived sugars. The DPW-CeSiM catalyst also displayed high activity toward the conversion of other biomass-derived carbohydrates (fructose, sucrose, cellobiose and cellulose) into EL. Therefore, this work provides an instructive strategy for the design of efficient and stable DPW-based catalysts with dual acid sites uniformly distributed over the porous structure, which is obviously potential for industrial production of alkyl levulinates from carbohydrates and biomass.

Synthesis Ce-doped biomass carbon-based g-C3N4 via plant growing guide and temperature-programmed technique for degrading 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole

Zhi Zhu,Changchang Ma,Kesheng Yu,Ziyang Lu,Zhi Liu,Pengwei Huo,Xu Tang,Yongsheng Yan

In the present study, we constructed the Ce-doped biomass carbon-based mesoporous g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst via alternanthera philoxeroides griseb growing guide using calcination method. The Ce-C@g-C 3 N 4 exhibited more superior photocatalytic performance for 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (96 %) degrading than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 (39 %) and C@g-C 3 N 4 (60 %). As a consequence, the improved degradation efficiency of Ce-C@g-C 3 N 4 attributed to the biomass carbon can significantly enhance the mass transport channels of electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, the doped Ce 4+ ions acting as the redox center can sufficiently utilize the photogenerated carriers for generating more active radicals. Also, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanisms including transfer behaviors of charge carriers, generation of reactive species, intermediate degradation products are also discussed in detail. This work may provide a promising approach for synthesizing g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalyst by the plant growing guide and application in wastewater treatment.

Facilely fabricating mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solution supported CuO-based catalysts with advanced low-temperature activity toward CO oxidation

Yan Cui,Leilei Xu,Mindong Chen,Xinbo Lian,Cai-e Wu,Bo Yang,Zhichao Miao,Fagen Wang,Xun Hu

A series of mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solutions with different Ce/Zr ratios were successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy, and were employed as catalytic supports of CuO-based catalysts for CO oxidation. These supports and catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), etc. The catalytic performances toward CO oxidation had been carefully evaluated over these CuO-based catalysts. The effects of various influencing factors, such as the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, redox properties of the support, CuO loading amount and calcination temperature, on the low-temperature catalytic activity had been carefully investigated. The results showed that the catalyst supported on the support with a Ce/Zr ratio of 80/20 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. It was also found that the Ce–Zr solid solution mesoporous catalysts exhibited much higher catalytic activity than the counterparts without evident mesostructure, demonstrating the advantages of the mesoporous catalysts by providing more accessible catalytically active sites. Besides, the mesoporous Ce–Zr solid solution-supported catalysts with excellent redox properties displayed much better catalytic performances than the commercial γ-Al2O3-supported catalyst. The kinetic study also indicated that the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation process was greatly affected by the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, and redox properties of the support. Overall, the present CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce–Zr solid solutions as supports were considered as a series of promising catalysts for CO oxidation.

A photoelectrochemical aptasensor for aflatoxin B1 detection based on an energy transfer strategy between Ce-TiO2@MoSe2 and Au nanoparticles

Yunfei Tang,Xiaoqiang Liu,Hejie Zheng,Liwei Yang,Lele Li,Si Zhang,Yanmei Zhou,Subbiah Alwarappan

In this work, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was developed for the sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) based on a resonance energy transfer strategy between the Ce-TiO2@MoSe2 heterostructure and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The Ce-TiO2@MoSe2 composite was obtained by growing MoSe2 nanosheets on a TiO2 nanocube doped by the Ce element with a facile hydrothermal method. The composite effectively extended the absorption of TiO2 to the visible region and avoided the self-aggregation of MoSe2 nanosheets, leading to the excellent photocurrent response under visible light excitation. The PEC aptasensor was then fabricated by immobilizing the Ce-TiO2@MoSe2 composite on an ITO electrode, followed by the modification of the aminated AFB1 aptamer. An AuNP-labeled DNA sequence was subsequently hybridized with the aptamer to fabricate a sandwich structure, which was destroyed after the introduction of AFB1, decreasing the amount of the energy acceptor (AuNPs) at the electrode surface. Accordingly, the photocurrent was increased with the increase of AFB1 concentration. Under the optimal conditions, the PEC aptasensor showed a wide linear range of 0.03–200 ng mL−1 and a low detection limit of 0.01 ng mL−1 for AFB1 determination.

Dry Reforming of Shale Gas and Carbon Dioxide with Ni-Ce-Al2O3 Catalyst: Syngas Production Enhanced over Ni-CeOx Formation

Yan Liu,Ye Wu,Zarina Akhtamberdinova,Xiaoping Chen,Guodong Jiang,Dong Liu

Graphical High fives ! The catalyst 5Ni-5Ce exhibits the best catalytic performance in the dry reforming of shale gas and CO 2 . The introduction of Ce creates strong interaction between Ni and Ce, which enhances the electron transfer between them. And the substitution of Ni for Ce produces oxygen vacancies and defects, which can accelerate the adsorption and activation of the reactant gases molecule, further promoting the reaction. The dry reforming of shale gas (methane and ethane with an average ratio of 4 : 1) with carbon dioxide (DRS) is considered to be a promising way to produce syngas, which widens the utilization of shale gas and mitigates carbon dioxide emission. In this paper, Ce modified Ni-based catalysts were developed and the corresponding catalytic performances for DRS were investigated with a fixed bed reactor. Results showed that the catalyst containing 5 wt% of Ni and 5 wt% of Ce performed a best catalytic effect, including the selectivity of syngas and the carbon resistance performance, which is due to the good metal dispersion, strong interaction between Ni and Ce, and the formation of Ni-CeO x solid solution. The electron transfer between Ni and Ce, substitution of Ni for Ce, and the sequential oxygen vacancies or defects, play significant roles in activating CH 4 , C 2 H 6 and CO 2 . The conversion of reactant gas increased with temperature, while the selectivity of syngas is little affected with temperature. In addition, the desired catalyst containing 5 wt% of Ni and 5 wt% of Ce showed good stability in the long-time operation, which indicates that the Ce modified Ni-based catalyst is a promising one for the dry reforming of shale gas.

Microchip CE-LIF method for the hydrolysis of L-glutamine by using L-asparaginase enzyme reactor based on gold nanoparticle

Juan Qiao,Li Qi,Huijuan Yan,Yaping Li,Xiaoyu Mu

l -Asparaginase ( l -Asnase) can suppress the growth of malignant cells by rapid depletion of two essential amino acids, l -glutamine ( l -Gln) and l -asparagine ( l -Asn). To study the cytotoxic effect and the secondary complications of l -Asnase in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the development of a novel enzyme reactor of l -Asnase for the hydrolysis of l -Gln, employing the enzyme-gold nanoparticle conjugates in capillary, was reported in this work. First, a microchip CE (MCE)-LIF was established for the separation of l -amino acids ( l -Gln and l -glutamic acid) and studying the hydrolysis of l -Gln by using l -Asnase enzyme reactor. Then, using l -Gln as target analyte, the enzyme kinetics of l -Asnase in free solution, enzyme-gold nanoparticle conjugates (E-GNP), and the enzyme-gold nanoparticle conjugates immobilized in capillary (E-GNP-C) were investigated in detail with the proposed MCE-LIF method. Moreover, for optimizing the enzymatic reaction efficiency, three important parameters, including the length of capillary, the enzyme concentration reacted with gold nanoparticle and the amount of l -Asnase immobilized on the gold nanoparticle, have been studied. Owing to the high specific activity, the E-GNP-C enzyme reactor exhibited the best performance for the hydrolysis of l -Gln.

Aerobic Oxidation of Biomass-Derived 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural into 2,5-Diformylfuran Catalyzed by the Trimetallic Mixed Oxide (Co–Ce–Ru)

Yimei Wang,Bing Liu,Kecheng Huang,Zehui Zhang

The paper deals with oxidation of the biomass-derived model molecule 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) catalyzed by the trimetallic mixed oxide RuCo(OH)2CeO2. The catalyst RuCo(OH)2CeO2 was prepared through alkali hydrolysis of RuCl3, Co(NO3)2, and Ce(NO3)2 and characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. RuCo(OH)2CeO2 showed high catalytic activity for aerobic oxidation of HMF under mild conditions (in the case of atmospheric oxygen pressure). Various reaction parameters such as the reaction temperature, catalyst amount, solvent, and oxidant were explored. Results demonstrated that the oxidant and solvent showed a remarkable effect on the aerobic oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). Under optimal conditions, DFF was obtained in a high yield of 82.6% with HMF conversion of 96.5% after 12 h at 120 °C. More importantly, the catalyst could be reused several times without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

CNTs/Ce co-doped PbO2 anode for electro-oxidation of triclosan: Fabrication, kinetics, and degradation mechanism based on DFT calculations

Huijiao Wang,Siyuan Xue,Weiyi Wang,Fan Gao,Shizuo Yi,Jiayin Li,Yuxin Yang,Erzhuo Zhao,Jianchao Wang,Jianbing Wang

In this study, an efficient Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 electrode was fabricated for triclosan electro-oxidation by co-doping the transition metal Ce and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the PbO 2 active layer . Characterization results show that the co-doped Ce and CNTs present a synergistic effect on covering the obvious cracks on the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 surface, decreasing the PbO 2 crystal size, increasing the electrode oxygen evolution potential from 1.60 to 2.17 V vs SCE, and reducing the charge transfer resistance by 66 %. Consequently, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 was the most effective and energy-efficient electrode for hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation and triclosan electro-oxidation in this study. Compared with other two electrodes (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 and Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /Ce-PbO 2 ), triclosan removal by Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 was accelerated by 1.8–2.6 times, with the energy demand for abating 90 % triclosan (E EO ) decreased by 49 % – 67 %. Furthermore, triclosan degradation pathways were proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation and transformation product (TP) identification, with •OH addition at C14 and C11 sites being the most favorable pathway. In addition, the estimated acute and chronic toxicities of TPs were generally decreased than their mother compound. Therefore, the results of this study suggest the feasibility and effectiveness of the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 /CNT-Ce-PbO 2 electrode for triclosan electro-oxidation.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity of p-CuO/n-CeO2-Heterojunction-Based Nanocomposites for Superoxide Determination: Influence of the Cu/Ce Ratio

Xuan Cai,Libo Shi,Hongli Zhao,Minbo Lan

Graphical It's super ! The p-n junction was introduced to electrochemical catalysts for superoxide detection. Based on the superoxide dismutase mimic activity of CeO 2 and the high electrochemical catalytic activity of CuO, a non-enzymatic superoxide sensor was established. Owing to the construction of a p-n heterojunction, the sensing performances of p-CuO/n-CeO 2 composites were further enhanced. This method could serve as an effective strategy to overcome the intrinsic defects of semiconductor catalysts and improve their applications in electrochemical sensors. The performance of electrochemical sensors is mainly limited by the intrinsic properties of electrocatalysts fabricated on the electrode. Introducing a p-n heterojunction into semiconducing electrocatalysts is an effective strategy to enhance the sensing performance. In this paper, p-n-heterojunction-based CuO/CeO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process, and the effect of different Cu/Ce molar ratios was explored. p-CuO/n-CeO 2 was found to exhibit higher conductivity and electrocatalytic activity toward the target superoxide anion (O 2 .− ) when compared to both bare CuO and CeO 2 . Characterization shows that different Cu/Ce ratios in p-CuO/n-CeO 2 materials result in a considerable variation in the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ level, and energy band gap of CeO 2 , greatly affecting the electrochemical performance of p-CuO/n-CeO 2 . Under optimized conditions, these sensors exhibit high sensitivity and low detection limit toward O 2 .− . These results demonstrate that the performance of semiconductor-based electrochemical sensors may be enhanced by the electron-transfer process of p-n junction interfaces.

Fabrication of amino-functionalized Ce/Mn bimetallic organic framework and its efficient performance on Uranium(VI) extraction in aqueous solutions

Zhigen Li,Mengfan Zhou,Shuqin Wang,Baowei Hu

Uranium (U(VI)) removal from nuclear-contaminated water is still an obstacle that needs to be solved quickly. Herein, looking for efficient, fast, and highly selective separation of U(VI) versatile material is of great significance. In this study, a novel Ce/Mn bimetallic modified aminated MOF material UiO-66-NH 2 was synthesized through solvothermal reaction by using ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O as a sacrificial template, which was employed as an adsorbent in radioactive remediation. The characterization of the adsorbent Ce/Mn-UiO-66-NH 2 was investigated by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET and the results indicated that Zr in UiO-66-NH 2 had been partially replaced by Ce/Mn successfully. Through batch adsorption experiments, we found that the maximal capture capacity of the produced adsorbent for U(VI) was 1218.78 mg/g at 313 K, and the elimination process fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process of U(VI) was endothermic and spontaneous which was regulated by chemisorption. After 5 times recycling, the removal rate still exceeded 83.5 %, indicating that Ce/Mn-UiO-66-NH 2 was a promising adsorbent that can effectively remove U(VI) in radioactive wastewater. The increased adsorption capacity was proposed attributed to complexation and electrostatic attraction between the radionuclides and the introducing functional groups as well as Ce or Mn ions. This study provides a reference value for radioactive wastewater remediation.

Modulating charge separation of Ce–TiO2 aerogel supported on chitosan derived ordered porous carbonaceous frameworks for promoting CO2 photoreduction activity

Xiaodong Wu,Sijia Ren,Wenke Hao,Ke Yuan,Hongtong Guo,Yuyan Li,Haozhe Huang,Ran Xie,Kai Zhong,Wen Yan,Xiaodong Shen,Sheng Cui

Developing efficient photocatalysts with low cost, high performance, and high selectivity is essential and imperative for CO 2 conversion and utilization, yet it remains a big challenge. Herein, a novel Ce-doped TiO 2 aerogel with oxygen vacancy anchored on the oriented carbonaceous (Ce–TiO 2 @CS) is synthesized by the sol-gel technique, combined with the freeze casting, supercritical drying technique, and heat treatment processes . The Ce–TiO 2 @CS aerogel has a typical aerogel-like structure, with the Ce–TiO 2 aerogel anchored on the oriented porous carbon , rendering a large BET-specific surface area of 124 m 2 /g, which leads to enhanced photocatalytic activity . The Ce-doping into the pristine TiO 2 results in impurity levels within the band gap, which extends the light response range to the visible light region. In addition, the rapid combination of electrons and holes is prevented via the two-phase microstructures and rapid transfer rate of electrons within the oriented porous carbon. The yields of CH 4 and CO are as high as 9.45 μmol h −1  g −1 and 42.26 μmol h −1  g −1 , respectively, which are 28.6 and 2.46 times higher than those of pristine TiO 2 aerogel under simulated solar spectrum conditions without any sacrificial agents or co-catalysts, The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that larger C–O bonds of CO 2 molecule and more negative adsorption energy have occurred on the Ce–TiO 2 @CS aerogel, indicating that the CO 2 activation has been enhanced, which greatly improves the CO 2 photoreduction activity. This work may guide the designing of aerogel-based photocatalysts for CO 2 photocatalytic reduction.
