A type II heterostructured BiVO4/MIL-88B(Fe) composite was successfully synthesised for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) by a simple hydrothermal method. Thin film materials avoid secondary pollution of powder materials. The samples were characterised by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, and PL. The samples were also characterised for their optoelectronic properties. 3-BV/MIL-88B(Fe) (3 mmol BiVO4) was the most effective catalyst for the degradation of TC-HCl, achieving 92.1% removal at 75 min with a degradation rate constant of 22.79 × 10−3 min−1. Moreover, durability evaluation and TC-HCl degradation potential evaluation were also performed. We looked into how TC-HCl concentration, pH and ions affect the degradation results. In order to determine the active ingredients, experiments for trapping free radicals and EPR tests were performed. The results indicated that the main active species were h+ and ˙OH. It is proposed that a reasonable type-II heterostructure can help to explain the photocatalytic mechanism. The current study creates a stable photocatalytic system by compositing electrocatalytic and photocatalytic materials to achieve efficient antibiotic degradation and provides a viable strategy for future applications.

This research unveils the remarkable capability of surface-activated Fe 73.5 Si 13.5 B 9 Cu 1 Nb 3 metallic glass (SA-MG) in rapidly decolorizing the acid orange II (AO II) azo dye solution. The novel chemical surface activation (CSA) process forms a heterogenous Cu-rich layer with nanoscale Cu particles on the Fe 73.5 Si 13.5 B 9 Cu 1 Nb 3 metallic glass (MG). Despite the limited number of newly formed particles and their partial coverage of the MG surface, the SA-MG can completely decolor the AO II solution in just one minute, a speed more than 25 times faster than the as-received MG. This enhanced performance is attributed to the local galvanic-cell-enhanced bimetal Fenton-like reactions and the activated surface topography. Furthermore, the activated MG surface can form caducous flakes and a sizeable new surface area that might favor surface self-cleaning and dye adsorption. The surface-activated Fe 73.5 Si 13.5 B 9 Cu 1 Nb 3 metallic glass ribbons exhibited a high degradation rate constant k (1.4∼7.4) and good reusability (13 cycles with k higher than 1.2). This discovery presents a rapid and cost-effective surface activation for Fe-based MG, offering a promising strategy for rapidly treating printing and dying wastewater.

Thallium(III) (Tl(III)) is mobile in acidic environments and under ligand complexation, posing a potential threat to the environment and human health. The adsorption of Tl(III) on manganese and iron (hydr)oxides will affect its environmental mobility and engineering removal efficiency. However, the adsorption behavior and interfacial reaction mechanism of Tl(III) remain largely unknown. This study is the first to elucidate the surface complexation mechanism of Tl(III) on Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and to investigate the adsorption behavior of Tl(III) under the influence of typical environmental ligands. Deprotonation of surface hydroxyl groups contributes to the increase in adsorption capacity for Tl(III) (δ-MnO 2 , 1619.93 mg g −1 ; α-FeOOH, 48.25 mg g −1 ; and α-Fe 2 O 3 , 58.66 mg g −1 from Langmuir thermodynamic fitting). Surface complexation modeling reveals tridentate complexation of Tl(III) on birnessite and monodentate complexation on iron (hydr)oxides. The anionic ligand strongly inhibits the adsorption of Tl(III) (up to 16.0 %–40.0 %) by complexing with Tl(III) and occupying the adsorption sites. In addition, HA also reduces the adsorption of Tl(III) by 8.2 %–23.2 % by exacerbating the aggregation and surface coating of the adsorbent particles. New insights into the binding mechanism of Tl(III) on Fe/Mn oxides can help to guide the development of efficient Tl(III) removal adsorbents.

To address the environmental residues of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, as well as to develop efficient synergistic photocatalytic Fenton catalysts, this study synthesized iron-doped molybdenum disulfide (Fe-MoS 2 ) composite catalysts via a hydrothermal method and constructed a synergistic photocatalytic Fenton system for efficient TC degradation. Experimental results showed that the doping of iron significantly optimized the electronic structure of MoS 2 , reducing its bandgap from 1.51 eV to 1.30 eV, thereby broadening its light absorption range. Additionally, Fe Mo dual active sites suppressed charge recombination and improved charge separation efficiency. Under visible light irradiation, Fe-MoS 2 synergistically activated H 2 O 2 , achieving a TC removal rate of 82.3 % within 60 min. Iron doping promoted the heterogeneous Fenton reaction, accelerated the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling, and facilitated the direct reduction of H 2 O 2 by photogenerated electrons to produce active species ( O 2 − and 1 O 2 ), while the synergistic hole oxidation effectively degraded TC. Fe-MoS 2 exhibited excellent stability in weakly acidic to neutral environments as well as in complex aqueous matrices, along with good recyclability. This study provides new insights for the development of efficient bifunctional catalytic materials and offers significant reference value for the treatment of antibiotic contamination in real wastewater.

Metal–organic framework (MOF) derivatives have emerged as promising candidates for designing lightweight, high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) materials owing to their tunable porosity, compositional diversity, and structural flexibility. In this study, a hybrid material (Nd/Fe-MOF) comprising Nd- and Fe-based MOFs was constructed via ion-exchange engineering based on an MOF-plus-MOF strategy, involving partial exchange between Nd³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions. The subsequent pyrolysis of Nd/Fe-MOF yielded a particle-decorated bundle-like Nd 2 O 3 /Fe@C nanocomposite, which exhibited an exceptional EMWA performance with a minimum reflection loss (RL min )of −60.13 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.0 GHz at a thin thickness of 1.8 mm. Moreover, Nd 2 O 3 /Fe@C also displayed an enhanced absorption with an EAB of 2.1 GHz (5.2–7.3 GHz) at low-frequency C band. This outstanding EMWA behavior can be attributed to the optimized impedance matching induced by the introduction of Nd 2 O 3 , and the prolonged propagation paths of EMW caused by the bundle-like structure. In order to present the practical application, CST simulation showed that the reduction value of radar cross section (RCS) of Nd 2 O 3 /Fe@C could reach up to 32.6 dB m² compared to the pure perfect electric conductor (PEC) substrate. Therefore, this study demonstrates the feasibility of employing ion-exchange engineering for the optimization of electromagnetic parameters and the subsequent development of high-efficiency rare earth–based absorbers.

Flexible pressure sensors are integral to the advancement of next-generation wearable electronics, electronic skins, and human–machine interfaces. However, the concurrent realization of lightweight design, mechanical stability, and high sensitivity remains an ongoing challenge. Here, we present a high-performance flexible pressure sensor based on a polyurethane (PU) sponge integrated with Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene nanosheets, iron nanowires (Fe NWs), and waterborne polyurethane (WPU). The 2D MXene provides superior electrical conductivity, while the 1D Fe NWs interconnect discontinuous regions within the porous structure, forming a robust three-dimensional conductive network. WPU facilitates uniform dispersion and strong interfacial bonding between the conductive fillers and the sponge matrix, thereby enhancing both mechanical integrity and sensing stability. The resulting sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 6.9 kPa⁻¹ , a broad sensing range up to 15 kPa, rapid response and recovery times (97 ms and 66 ms, respectively), and excellent durability over 3000 mechanical cycles. In addition to reliable pressure detection, the device enables dual-functional capabilities, including real-time spatial pressure mapping using a 4 × 4 sensor array, localized Joule heating under mechanical stress, and accurate grip monitoring when integrated into wearable gloves. The sensor is fabricated via a cost-effective, scalable dip-coating method, offering practical advantages for industrial production. This work not only demonstrates a synergistic assembly strategy of 2D/1D nanomaterials within porous elastomeric frameworks but also paves the way for multifunctional, wearable sensing platforms capable of addressing real-world application demands in healthcare, robotics, and human–environment interaction.

Every year, a significant amount of fruit and vegetable spoilage caused by microbial contamination leads to substantial food waste and economic losses in the agricultural and food sectors. There is an urgent need to develop highly efficient and safe multifunctional preservation materials. Curcumin (Cur) is known for its excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties; however, its poor water solubility and low bioavailability severely limit its practical applications. In this study, we synthesized highly stable and water-dispersible metal-biomolecule network nanoparticles by self-assembly of ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) with DNA in an aqueous solution at room temperature. Furthermore, by leveraging the strong coordination interaction between Iron(Fe) and Cur, we prepared Cur-modified nanoparticles (Fe-DNA-Cur) with dual antioxidant and antibacterial functions. Fe-DNA-Cur not only preserves the biological activity of curcumin, but also effectively addresses its inherent poor water solubility. After further compounding with chitosan (CS), the as-prepared Fe-DNA-Cur@CS composite demonstrates breakthrough antimicrobial performance, thereby providing an innovative solution for developing novel, highly effective and safe fruit/vegetable preservatives. When used as a sustainable food packaging coating for perishable fruits at room temperature, the Fe-DNA-Cur@CS coating can reduce dehydration, prevent nutrient loss, inhibit microbial growth, increase nutraceutical value, maintain strawberry quality, and extend shelf life during storage. This study demonstrates the potential of Fe-DNA-Cur@CS as a multifunctional coating material to reduce food waste and agricultural economic losses caused by microbial contamination.

The replacement of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis systems is regarded as a highly promising strategy for reducing hydrogen production energy consumption, enhancing hydrogen efficiency, and even effectively treating urea wastewater. However, the design and fabrication of UOR catalysts in the UOR coupled HER catalytic water electrolysis system remains one of the significant challenges. Herein, we employed a facile, operable, and practical solid-state reaction method to synthesize two representative types of transition metal phosphosulfide (MPS 3 ) catalysts, and the intrinsic and structural characteristics of these catalysts were systematically characterized. Subsequently, the MPS 3 catalyst was deposited onto a nickel foam substrate (NF) to obtain the MPS/NF catalytic electrode. The UOR and OER performance of the MPS 3 /NF catalytic electrode was evaluated to elucidate the competitive mechanisms of UOR and OER within the MPS 3 catalyst. Results indicated that the UOR driving potentials required for NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF electrodes were individually reduced by 101 mV and 33 mV compared to the corresponding OER driving potentials under the condition of 100 mA/cm 2 , and NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF electrodes could even achieve large UOR current density of 300 mA/cm 2 at potentials as low as 1.630 V (vs. RHE) and 1.647 V (vs. RHE), respectively. In-situ Raman spectroscopy combined with XPS analysis revealed distinct catalytic pathways for NiPS 3 and FePS 3 . During catalysis, NiPS 3 undergoes surface reconstruction to form γ-NiOOH, which exhibited superior selectivity toward urea oxidation, whereas FePS 3 predominantly generated β-FeOOH, whose activity was compromised by competing oxygen evolution, thereby conferring weaker UOR selectivity compared with NiPS 3 . For the UOR-coupled HER whole-cell urea electrolysis assessment, the NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF whole-cell attained urea degradation efficiencies of 89.04 % and 69.61 %, respectively. This work provided a novel strategy and practical approach for the development of novel, efficient, and cost-effective MPS 3 catalysts for UOR coupled with HER in the treatment of urea wastewater for synergistic hydrogen production.

Polymer-derived SiBCN ceramics (PDCs-SiBCN) have emerged as promising candidates for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption applications. However, their strong electromagnetic loss, attributed to high crystalline phase content, simultaneously causes impedance mismatch and a narrow absorption bandwidth. To address this challenge, this study proposes an innovative stacking faults (SFs) defect engineering strategy, which can achieve high dielectric loss at low crystallinity. Specifically, SiC whiskers with high-density SFs were catalytically grown using an Fe-mediated liquid-solid interface during polyborosilazane pyrolysis. These SFs serve as effective polarization centers, significantly enhancing dielectric loss capability. By optimizing Fe content, fewer crystalline phases and high SFs density were achieved in SiBCN, thereby realizing impedance matching and strong dielectric loss. Consequently, the unique microstructure expanded the effective absorption bandwidth of SiBCN from 4.82 to 6.36 GHz at 2.1 mm thickness, demonstrating record-breaking broadband absorption performance among PDCs. This Fe-mediated SFs defect engineering provides a strategic pathway to resolve the long-standing conflict between “impedance matching and strong dielectric loss” in PDCs.

Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) has been proved to be a promising electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) material candidate owing to its superior electrical and dielectric properties, along with rich potential for structural design. However, the complicated synthesis process and the contradiction between impedance matching and attenuation capacity have hindered the further development and application of graphene-based absorbing materials. Herein, a Fe nanoparticle/RGO composites was synthesized through a facile in-situ chemical reduction process. The configuration of Fe nanoparticles regulates the permittivity and permeability of RGO and balances the impedance matching. The dipole polarization caused by the residual oxygen-containing functional groups in RGO, coupled with the interfacial polarization loss caused by the Fe/RGO interface, enhance the dielectric loss capacity, contributing to microwave loss in the high-frequency range. The natural resonance and exchange resonance caused by the nano Fe particles enhance the microwave loss capacity in the low-frequency range. Benefitting from the synergistic enhancement from dielectric loss and magnetic loss, Fe/RGO composites exhibit the characteristic of daul-band absorption. Notably, the sample FG-0.25 achieved an effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) of 5.33 GHz and a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −48.9 dB. The absorption peaks in the low-frequency band can encompass a significant portion of the C-band. This research provides unique insights for the advancement of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient RGO based EMWA materials.

Celastrol (CEL), an active compound isolated from the root of Tripterygium wilfordii, exhibits broad anticancer activities. However, its poor stability, narrow therapeutic window and numerous adverse effects limit its applications in vivo. In this study, an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) activatable CEL-Fe(III) chelate was designed, synthesized, and then encapsulated with a reactive oxygen species (ROS)–responsive polymer to obtain CEL-Fe nanoparticles (CEL-Fe NPs). In normal tissues, CEL-Fe NPs maintain structural stability and exhibit reduced systemic toxicity, while at the tumor site, an ATP-ROS–rich tumor microenvironment, drug release is triggered by ROS, and antitumor potency is restored by competitive binding of ATP. This intelligent CEL delivery system improves the biosafety and bioavailability of CEL for cancer therapy. Such a CEL-metal chelate strategy not only mitigates the challenges associated with CEL but also opens avenues for the generation of CEL derivatives, thereby expanding the therapeutic potential of CEL in clinical settings.

Cu-based catalysts have been extensively used in the methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction owing to low cost and high efficiency. In this work, we investigated the promotional effect of Fe on the Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared by an incipient-wetness impregnation method using a series of (quasi) in situ characterization techniques. The form of the Fe species was found to strongly depend on the Fe content. Fe species are present as highly dispersed FeO x in small amount of Fe with improved the dispersion of Cu. As Fe content increases, Fe species gradually transition to CuFe alloy and eventually to Fe 3 O 4 particles, leading to a decrease in Cu dispersion. With the gradual increase in Fe content, the apparent activity shows a volcanic trend, with CuAl-0.1Fe showing highest activity, whereas the intrinsic activity gradually decreases. Compared with CuAl- x Fe, adding moderate Fe to Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 promotes the dispersion of Cu and Zn, forming abundant Cu-ZnO x interfacial sites, which improves both apparent and intrinsic activities. The best catalytic performance was obtained with the CuZnAl-0.1Fe catalyst, achieving the highest H 2 production rate of 134.7 mmol g cat −1 h −1 at 200 °C. This study reveals the role of Fe in Cu-based catalysts for MSR and inspires the design of improved Cu-based catalysts.
