The significant challenge faced by Li–O 2 batteries (LOBs) lies in their slow oxygen reduction and evolution kinetics, which greatly necessitates the development of highly active catalysts. Herein, we report a high-performance oxygen cathode (RuCo-NC) that is achieved by uniformly dispersing the nanoalloy of noble metal Ru and transition metal Co on the three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous carbon. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a prominent electron transfer process between Ru and Co, along with a substantial abundance of electron transfer sites on RuCo-NC. These characteristics contribute to a strong positive equilibrium effect on the formation and decomposition of Li 2 O 2 , which is crucial for LOBs. Furthermore, the calculated Gibbs free energy change during the oxygen reduction and evolution processes indicates that RuCo-NC exhibits the smallest overpotential compared to single metal catalysts . As a result, this RuCo-NC cathode enables the resulting LOB with a larger discharge specific capacity, lower overpotential for efficient oxygen reduction and evolution, and excellent cycling stability. This work introduces an effective method for fabricating nanoalloy catalysts with enhanced efficiency, promising advancements in energy applications .

With the increasing prevalence of mobile electronic devices, electric vehicles, and other technological advancements, there is a growing demand for higher-capacity Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been actively researched in recent years due to their numerous advantages. However, the irreversible collapse during lithium-ion interaction hampers MOFs’ electrochemical stability. This study employs a direct precipitation method to synthesize uniformly shaped MOF materials, followed by carbon coating using electrospinning techniques , and ultimately, derivatives of MOF materials are produced through annealing. Thanks to this innovative material design process , exceptional performance is observed in this material as a lithium-negative electrode. After 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1 A g −1 , its reversible capacity stabilizes at 1318 mAh g −1 . Moreover, this negative electrode material exhibits exceptional rate performance at various current densities. The Co 3 O 4 /NiO@NCNFs electrode demonstrates enhanced charge storage capacity due to the synergistic effects of diffusion and capacitance control processes. Additionally, this material exhibits characteristics of low impedance and high lithium-ion diffusion rate. This study presents a novel method for manufacturing lithium-ion battery negative electrode materials by integrating MOF materials with electrospinning technology.

Soft-matter electrolytes have garnered significant attention due to their improved safety features, rendering them viable options for the creation of Li metal batteries with high energy densities. However, establishing effective interfacial contact between the electrodes and soft-matter electrolyte remains a significant challenge, necessitating modifications at the interface. In this study, we design an artificial composite electrolyte interphase (PEG-Cs SEI) on the surface of the Li metal anode to improve ion transport between the soft-matter electrolyte and Li metal. The PEG-Cs SEI layer exhibits high flexibility and mechanical strength, effectively mitigating the lithium dendrite growth and volume expansion. As a result, Li||Li cells assembled with PEG-Cs SEI-modified lithium metal anodes exhibit stable performance for more than 1700 h, maintaining small overpotential even at high current densities and capacities (2.45 mAh cm −2 ). With a LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) cathode, the battery shows a capacity up to 182 mAh g −1 at first discharge with cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. Furthermore, in a pouch cell configuration, the battery achieves 100 % capacity retention over 90 cycles and successfully passes safety tests, without fire or smoke. Combining the modified lithium metal anode with soft-matter electrolytes paves a promising way for the effective implementation of high-energy-density Li metal cells.

Polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) has become a potential alternative in efficient Li + separation from brines typically with Mg 2+ and Li + , due to its exceptional stability and selectivity. However, the practical application of PIMs is still greatly restricted by its slow mass transfer and related unclear transport mechanism. Here, we fabricated an efficient PIM with tributyl phosphate (TBP) along with sodium tetraphenylborate (NaBPh 4 ) as carriers and cellulose triacetate (CTA) as a polymer skeleton for highly selective and permeable Li + separation from high Mg 2+ /Li + aqueous solutions, offering an initial flux of 3–20 times higher than other PIMs. With increasing TBP content in the PIM, a nonmonotonical trend (sharp increase-leveling off-slow decrease) of its initial flux was observed. The improvement of the solubility (compatibility) of NaBPh 4 in CTA matrix by introducing TBP was demonstrated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) images, which was highly consistent with binding energy simulation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) results verify that moderate TBP content in the PIM could enlarge the distance of polymer chains and enhance the initial flux of PIMs, while excessive TBP can occupy the free volume sites, leading to an adverse effect on the permeability. Our study provides valuable information on the compatibility effect on the mass transfer through the polymer matrix including PIMs, which exhibits prospect in a wide range of applications of metal separation.

Increasing the positive charge density (PCD) of nanofiltration (NF) membranes is crucial to acquiring the high selectivity of Li + /Mg 2+ separation and remains extensive exploitation. Herein, a novel modifier (1-methyl hydrazide-3,5-dibenzyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, MDTAB) containing two quaternary ammonium groups and an amino group was designed and synthesized, which was grafted onto the polyamide NF membrane surface. The surface PCD of the MDTAB modified membrane (+7.02 mC m −2 ) was almost four times that of the unmodified membrane, which is the highest among the existing positively charged NF membranes. The MDTAB modified membrane acquired MgCl 2 rejection as high as 99.3 %, and the pure water permeance was 15.92 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . When utilized for Li + /Mg 2+ separation, the Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio was reduced from the original 100 to 1.73. This strategy may provide valuable guidance for the rational design of the positively charged membrane in salt lake lithium extraction applications.

Li–CO2 batteries have emerged as a potential candidate for next-generation energy storage devices due to their impressive theoretical energy density and potential for CO2 capture. However, the practical application of these batteries faces a challenge due to the sluggish CO2 reduction reaction kinetics and Li2CO3 decomposition at the cathode. Herein, graphene nanoribbons decorated with Ru nanoparticles (GNR/Ru) as cathode catalysts are reported, where dispersed Ru nanoparticles on conductive graphene networks are effective in catalyzing CO2 reduction and Li2CO3 decomposition. As a result, the cathode using GNR/Ru catalysts demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 11 470 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and exhibits excellent long-term stability (more than 1240 hours) with a low overpotential of 1.34 V at a fixed capacity of 500 mA h g−1. This study provides new insights for exploring high-performance cathodic catalysts.

The hydroxyl groups on the surface of the cellulose-based gel polymer electrolyte lead to poor interfacial compatibility due to side reactions with lithium sheets. In this paper, a novel cellulose-based gel polymer electrolyte was prepared by uniformly coating the surface of a cellulose membrane with a nanohydrotalcite/PVDF-HFP composite using electrospinning technology. This cellulose-based gel polymer electrolyte exhibits good interfacial compatibility and excellent cycling stability (91.7% specific capacity retention after 500 cycles at 0.5C). Theory and experiments have shown that nanohydrotalcite on the surface of cellulose membrane can effectively prevent the contact of hydroxyl groups with lithium sheets to reduce the side reactions. In addition, nanohydrotalcite can also act as a Li+ transport redistributor to facilitate the uniform deposition of Li+ and reduce the formation of lithium dendrites to extend the cycle life.

In situ characterization on interface stability has been hardly tried in redox mediator (RM)-involved Li-O 2 battery thus far. Here, benzyltriethylammonium iodide (BTEAI) can act as a self-defensive RM in the electrolyte LiTFSI/TEGDME to enhance the reaction kinetics and increase the cycling stability by suppressing the redox shuttling. I - effectively reduces the charging overpotential by changing decomposition route for Li 2 O 2. BTEA + can facilitate LiTFSI decomposition in the electrolyte, and participate in formation of an organic–inorganic composite SEI-contained layer on Li anode. Moreover, for the first time, non-destructive synchrotron X-Ray tomography is used to investigate the mechanism of suppressing shuttle effect by monitoring the morphological evolution of electrodes interface. This work provides an insight into the development of functional RM and in situ protection strategies for Li anodes in Li-O 2 batteries.

A simple carbon black (Ketjenblack, KB)-multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composite was fabricated and used as the air cathode in a Li-O 2 battery where MWCNTs primarily serve as microscopic cables to enhance long-range electronic conductivity. With optimal KB:MWCNTs mass ratios, the composite exhibited significantly improved specific capacity (up to 10611 mAh/g carbon under 100 mAh/g carbon ), rate capability (up to 9598 mAh/g carbon under 500 mAh/g carbon ) and cyclability than pristine KB, owing to the synergy of KB's abundant surface area for accommodation of discharge products and MWCNTs’ long-range electronic conductivity to guide even and compact deposition of discharge products, and mitigate passivation/clogging of the air cathode surface during discharge. This strategy of using MWCNTs as microscopic cables could also be applied for other commercial materials to construct high-performance and low-cost air cathodes.

Efficient separation of monovalent/multivalent cations and anions is essential for optimizing lithium extraction from Salt-Lake to simplify production processes and reduces costs. Nevertheless, the conventional nanofiltration membranes with specific charges can only separate either cations or anions. To overcome this limitation, a novel strategy is proposed for fabricating nanofiltration membranes with “negative-positive-negative” sandwich-like mixed charge configuration. Herein, two aqueous monomers (phenylbiguanide and polyethyleneimine) with significantly different diffusion rates are employed to react with trimesoyl chloride to form a nascent polyamide layer via interfacial polymerization. Subsequently, phenylbiguanide that preferentially diffuses to top surface of nascent membrane and unreacted amine groups from polyethyleneimine are used to react with m -phenylenedisulfonyl chloride to form a polysulfonamide/polyamide functional layer. The unreacted sulfonyl chloride groups and trimesoyl chloride near aqueous phase could hydrolyzes more easily, producing negatively charged sulfonic acid and carboxyl groups on the top and bottom. Meanwhile, the main part of polyamide layer is positively charged attributed to numerous unreacted amine groups. The “negative-positive-negative” sandwich-like configuration was proven using TOF-SIMS. The fabricated membrane exhibited a selectivity of 57.22 for MgCl 2 /LiCl and 30.61 for Na 2 SO 4 /NaCl. Furthermore, Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity of 57.34 was achived for the mixed salt solution (Mg 2+ /Li + = 45), showing good application potential in lithium extraction.

The main obstacles that hinder the development of efficient lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries are the polysulfide shuttling effect in sulfur cathode and the uncontrollable growth of dendritic Li in the anode. An all-purpose flexible electrode that can be used both in sulfur cathode and Li metal anode is reported, and its application in wearable and portable storage electronic devices is demonstrated. The flexible electrode consists of a bimetallic CoNi nanoparticle-embedded porous conductive scaffold with multiple Co/Ni-N active sites (CoNi@PNCFs). Both experimental and theoretical analysis show that, when used as the cathode, the CoNi and Co/Ni-N active sites implanted on the porous CoNi@PNCFs significantly promote chemical immobilization toward soluble lithium polysulfides and their rapid conversion into insoluble Li 2 S, and therefore effectively mitigates the polysulfide shuttling effect. Additionally, a 3D matrix constructed with porous carbonous skeleton and multiple active centers successfully induces homogenous Li growth, realizing a dendrite-free Li metal anode. A Li–S battery assembled with S/CoNi@PNCFs cathode and Li/CoNi@PNCFs anode exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 785 mAh g −1 and long cycle performance at 5 C (capacity fading rate of 0.016% over 1500 cycles).

Advanced high-energy-density energy storage systems with high safety are desperately demanded to power electric vehicles and smart grids. Li metal batteries (LMBs) can provide a considerable leap in battery energy. Nevertheless, the widespread deployment of Li metal has long been fettered by the unstable solid electrolyte interlayer and uncontrolled Li dendrite growth induced safety concerns. Herein, a flexible and conformal CTF-LiI coating has been rationally coated on Li metal surface to stabilize metallic Li. With the CTF-LiI coating, the Li electrodeposition exhibits a uniform, dense, and dendrite-free manner; however, the side reactions between metallic Li and electrolyte have been effectively suppressed. The Li symmetric cells can run stably for a prolonged cycling over 2500 cycles at 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating a much lower voltage hysteresis. In addition, the Li|Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 cells can deliver an improved long-time cycling over 250 cycles at 0.05 A g −1 . Furthermore, the half cells paired with the organic S cathode also demonstrate an excellent long lifespan stable cycling and a high capacity of 682.2 mAh g −1 retained over 300 cycles with an average capacity decay of ≈0.05% per cycle at 1.0 A g −1 . This work demonstrates a significant step toward large-scalable and long-cycling stable LMBs.
