Bridging dielectric-magnetic synergistic units with MOFs on fibers structure for high-efficient microwave absorption at low filler loading

Xiaona Ma,Fei Pan,Zheng Xiu,Lixin Li,Runa Zhang,Huiling Gu,Chunhua Sun,Yukui Gao,Wei Lu

Metal-organic framework (MOF) capable of magnetic-dielectric synergy loss mechanisms shine in the field of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption, whereas their high filler loading in the matrix remains a challenge and limit their practical application. Here, we mono-disperse bimetallic CoZn-MOF on conductive carbon nanofibers precursor via electrospinning technique and a following heat-treatment was employed to construct a Co–ZnO@NC carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites. The Co–ZnO particles with a size of 2 μm are evenly distributed within the carbon fibers, forming a unique structure resembling a “pearl necklace”. The introduction of one-dimension (1D) CNF can prolong the electron transport path and effectively reduces the percolation threshold of the composites. The composites are endowed with abundant heterogeneous interfaces, excellent magnetic-dielectric synergy and improved impedance matching, benefiting from which the obtained Co–ZnO@NC CNF composites demonstrate a maximum reflection loss (RL min ) of −54.5 dB at a thickness of 2.3 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.12 GHz at a filler loading of merely 10 %. This study provides a feasible strategy for the design of MOF-derived absorbers with enhanced microwave absorption capacity at low filler loading.

A facile method to construct ZIF-8 MOFs on contact lens for high antibiotics loading and self-defensive release

Yi Shao,Hao Suo,Shuting Wang,Yaou Peng,Xiaoying Chu,Ziyue Long,Kanghui Du,Lili Su,Xinyue Sun,Xinyi Wang,Qingying Wang,Renlong Li,Bailiang Wang

Eye trauma, ophthalmic surgery and contact lens (CL) wearing cause corneal infection and bacterial biofilms formation, which further lead to corneal ulcer and perforation. In view of the low bioavailability of antibiotic eye drops and the clinical problems that cause bacterial resistance, we used pH sensitive zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 metal–organic frameworks (ZIF-8 MOFs) to load broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs levofloxacin (LEVO). After the surface modification by hyaluronic acid (HA), the nanomaterial surface was negatively charged. A simple amination treatment was used to endow CL surface with amino groups to combine the negatively charged nano drug loading system through electrostatic forces. The bacteriostatic ring of ZIF-8@LEVO@HA-PEI modified CL (ZLHP-CL) was 34 mm, which could be owing to the high drug loading capacity of ZIF-8 (0.65 mg/cm 2 ). The bactericidal function was further confirmed by shake flask method and live/dead bacterial staining assay against S. aureus , S. epidermidis and E. coli . It is worth mentioning that ZLHP-CL showed significant pH sensitivity to the bacterial infection, which released drug rapidly at pH 5.5 and hardly released drug at pH 7.4. In the bacterial biofilm’s formation experiment, it was found that ZLHP-CL obviously inhibited bacterial adhesion and biofilms formation. Furthermore, it was proved in infectious keratitis animal that ZLHP-CL could kill the bacteria and reduce the inflammation reaction, which showed advantages in corneal tissue repair and light transmittance maintenance. In this work, based on nanotechnology, a facile CL drug loading technology is developed, which can be used to sustained release of various drugs for ophthalmic diseases treatment.

Panpan Chen,Han Wang,Huan Li,Baitong Niu,Hongxu Guo,Zhangxu Chen

Spindle-shaped NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) has been fabricated through the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method and then characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. The sample shows a high-performance electrochemical sensor for heavy metal ions (Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II)) and dopamine. The as-prepared NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/GCE electrode exhibited detection limits of 12.0 nM, 8.53 nM, and 18.0 nM for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II), respectively, and with good stability and reproducibility. The NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/CPE electrode for dopamine detection showed a wide linear range of 0.3 to 450 μM with a detection limit of 0.025 μM, and also demonstrating excellent anti-interference properties and stability. This study provides a new strategy through simple ultrasound preparation for the highly sensitive electrochemical sensor detection of heavy metal ions and organic compounds.

Extra Unsaturated Metal Centers of Zirconium-Based MOFs: a Facile Approach towards Increasing CO2 Uptake Capacity at Low Pressure

Zhong Li,Xue Li,Chong Chen,Lijin Zhou,Qirui Guo,Dashui Yuan,Hui Wan,Jing Ding,Guofeng Guan

Graphical A facile route is applied to fabricate Zr–TCPP MOFs with incorporated open metal sites M 3+ (Fe 3+ and Al 3+ ) to enhance CO 2 uptake through strong interaction between central M 3+ and CO 2 molecules. Moreover, the CO 2 uptake on Zr–TCPP MOFs with extra Al 3+ ions is higher than that with extra Fe 3+ ions, and is ascribed to the higher isosteric heat of CO 2 adsorption. Developing adsorption materials to capture CO 2 at low pressure has attracted great attention due to the low CO 2 partial pressure in fuel gases. Herein, zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (PCN-X) are successfully synthesized and open metal sites (Fe 3+ and Al 3+ ) are incorporated into the PCN-X MOFs. The results indicate that the CO 2 adsorption capability is enhanced through the strong interaction between extra open metal centers and CO 2 molecules at low pressure. Meanwhile, the CO 2 adsorption capacity of PCN-X with incorporated Al 3+ is higher than with incorporated Fe 3+ , which can be attributed to the higher isosteric heat of CO 2 adsorption. The adsorption kinetics further indicate the faster CO 2 transmission on PCN-X with extra Al 3+ than with extra Fe 3+ . Besides, modified PCN-X, treated by some inorganic acids, exhibits favorable chemical stability, which is suitable for CO 2 capture from acidic fuel gases.

Portable dual-mode paper chips for highly sensitive and rapid determination of aflatoxin B1 via an aptamer-gated MOFs

Shiqi Huang,Xiao Song,Shiyu Wang,Hao Liu,Chengyi Xiong,Shengfu Wang,Xiuhua Zhang,Miao-Miao Chen

Paper chip as a representative microfluidic device has been mushroomed for rapid identification of contaminants in agro-food. However, the sensitivity and accuracy have still been challenged by inevitable background noise or interference in food matrix. Herein, we designed and fabricated a dual-mode paper chip (DPC) by assembling a patterned paper electrode with a platinum nanoparticles-treated colorimetric region through a flow channel. Dual-mode outputs were guided by an aptamer-gated UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). UiO-66-NH 2 loaded with 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was controlled by a switch comprised of CdS quantum dots-aptamer. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1, a kind of carcinogenic mycotoxin) target came and induced TMB release, triggering colorimetric and ECL signals on DPC, ultra-high sensitivity with a detection limit of 7.8 fg/mL was realized. The practicability of the DPC was also confirmed by spiking AFB1 in real corn samples. This portable paper-based device provides an ideal rapid detection platform tailored for diverse food contaminants analysis.

Rapid analysis of salbutamol residues in animal-derived food based on the fluorescence of MOFs/MIPs paper-based chips

Ying Zhou,Donghui Wang,Dingnan Wang,Yang Wang,Yang Li,Jie Li,Yiming Zhang

Mimetic recognition materials for rapid and selective analysis of foodborne contamination from complex foodstuff becomes a hot research topic in the field of food safety. In this work, borate-affinity-functionalized MOF/molecularly imprinted polymer paper-based microfluidic chips (FSU-BA@MIP) were prepared by growing functionalized MOFs on paper surface with 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid (3-CPBA) as the ligands, followed by coating of a MIP layer of salbutamol (SAL) through a borate-affinity surface imprinting strategy. Using the obtained paper-based chip as a mimetic recognition and specific enrichment module, the fluorescence sensing platform achieved visual rapid quantitative analysis of SAL with a linear range of 0.1 × 10 −2 –5.0 mg L −1 . The limits of detection and quantification were calculated to be 0.095 and 0.290 μg kg −1 , respectively, and the sample loading via lateral flow aid could be completed within 30 min. The obtained MOFs/MIPs paper chips provide an effective way for the rapid analysis of harmful contaminants from different animal-derived foods.

Reinforcing built-in electric field via weakening metal–oxygen covalency within MOFs-based heterointerface for robust oxygen evolution reaction

Xianbiao Hou,Tengjia Ni,Zhaozheng Zhang,Jian Zhou,Shucong Zhang,Lei Chu,Shuixing Dai,Huanlei Wang,Minghua Huang

Achieving enhanced built-in electric field (BEF) is highly desirable for accelerating charge transfer and boosting catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but still remains a huge challenge. Herein, we constructed the heterointerface composed of FeCo 2 S 4 and CoFe-MOF with abundant oxygen vacancies on Ni foam substrate (named as FeCo 2 S 4 @O v -CoFe-MOF/NF). Experimental and theoretical findings proposed that the introduction of abundant oxygen vacancies into the heterointerface could increase the energy level difference of the two components and reduce electron clouds overlap between metal Co/Fe and oxygen for increased BEF. Such enhanced BEF could accelerate the electronic migration for optimizing the d-band center and adsorption/desorption capacity of reaction intermediates. As expected, the target FeCo 2 S 4 @O v -CoFe-MOF/NF with high BEF intensity displayed splendid OER activity and durability in the alkaline and neutral medium. The present work provides precise guidance for designing other advanced catalysts through deliberately manipulating the BEF.

Surface functionalization of nickel foam with two-dimensional conjugated MOFs Fe3(hexaiminotriphenylene)2 for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Yulong Zhou,Rui Li,Yu Zhou,Chuanping Li,Fengcui Shen,Rongmei Liu,Xiandong Zhu

The design of high-efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly demanding for energy conversion applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with large surface area and flexible molecular species, can supply atom-dispersed metal active coordination sites (M−N X , M−S X , M−O X ) for OER and have been regarded as potential catalysts for practical applications. However, it is still challenging to use MOFs as OER catalysts directly due to their low conductivity and poor stability. Herein, we successfully synthesized a 2D c-MOF of Fe 3 (HITP) 2 (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) on the surface of nickel foam (NF) by using a layer-by-layer self-assembly strategy. The Fe 3 (HITP) 2 /NF-x electrode (x = 5, 10, 15, 20 is the number of cycles) exhibited impressive OER catalytic activity in alkaline electrolyte (1 M KOH), which is superior or comparable to most of the transition metal-based materials reported. Typically, Fe 3 (HITP) 2 /NF-15 were able to fully expose the Fe-N 4 catalytic sites with an overpotential of 224 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 45.4 mV·dec -1 . This was mainly attributed to the higher ECSA value, better kinetic process, and fast charge transfer ability of Fe 3 (HITP) 2 /NF. In addition, the current density of Fe 3 (HITP) 2 /NF-15 remained at 97.3 % of the initial current density after 24 h i-t stability test, showing excellent catalytic stability. This work provided a novel design strategy for the direct application of MOFs to OER applications.

Synthesis of NiCo-BTC MOFs-derived NiCo2O4 hollow microspheres for non-enzymatic glucose detection based on screen printing electrode

Zhenting Zhao,Jiahua You,Yingru Ding,Haijuan Mei,Kai Li,Ke Li,Yongqing Chen,Weiping Gong

Blood glucose monitoring plays a critical role in diabetes diagnosis and management. This study presents a novel template-engaged strategy to fabricate NiCo 2 O 4 hollow microspheres (NiCo-HMs) through thermal conversion of bimetallic organic frameworks (NiCo-BTC) precursors. The hierarchical architecture of NiCo-HMs provides an enlarged specific surface area for enhanced molecular accessibility, abundant exposed active sites from the bimetal synergistic system, and optimized electron transfer pathways through the interconnected porous network. When engineered into a portable biosensor (NiCo-HMs/SPE) via Nafion-assisted immobilization on screen-printed electrodes, the device demonstrates exceptional glucose sensing characteristics, including wide linearity (1.0 μM-2.0 mM, R 2  = 0.998), high sensitivity (789.4 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 ), rapid response (3.9 s)/recovery (6.4 s) kinetics, superior selectivity against common interferents, extended stability (90.0 % activity retention after 21 days). Practical validation was achieved through integration with a miniaturized potentiostat and smartphone interface, enabling real-time glucose tracking within ±15 % deviation thresholds. This MOF-derived hollow architecture provides new insights for developing next-generation wearable metabolic sensors.

Dual-Pronged Attack: Biomimetic Multi-Functional MOFs for Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapy via Inhibiting Synovial Hyperplasia and Improving Immune Microenvironment

Meng-Wen Ma,Kai-Lin He,Sui Zhou,Yong-Guo Hu,Kai Cheng,Jin-Xuan Fan,Bo Liu,Ling-Li Dong,Yuan-Di Zhao

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) and synovial macrophages (SMs) contribute significantly to the occurrence and development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although therapeutic strategies targeting FLSs or SMs have achieved certain results, monotherapy often fails to effectively alleviate synovitis. By loading methotrexate (MTX) and glucose oxidase (GOx) in the zinc imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) and incorporating with the platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and macrophage membranes, multifunctional probe mZPMG NPs were prepared. The mZPMG NPs can synergistically inhibit the abnormal proliferation of FLSs through drug therapy and starvation therapy, while eliminating excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoting the polarization of SMs toward M2-type macrophages. Oxygen generated through the ROS scavenging process can enhance the efficiency of the GOx starvation treatment. The in vivo experiments demonstrated that the clinical score of collagen-induced arthritis mice treated with the mZPMG NPs was 72.92% lower than those treated with PBS. Meanwhile, the mice in the mZPMG group exhibited obvious suppression of synovial hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration, and cartilage erosion. Therefore, this study proposed to adopt a “dual pronged attack” strategy in inhibiting the abnormal proliferation of FLSs and reducing the abundance of SMs to achieve macrophage repolarization, which provides a promising platform for the comprehensive treatment of RA.

Fabrication of S, N and O conjugated coordination Ni-MOFs with high electrochemical performance for self-regenerative asymmetric supercapacitor

Jing Li,Ying-Xia Ma,Shi-Fan Chang,Wen-Jing Li,Rui-Xiang Wu,Zhi-Da Wang,Yu-Ting Chai,Fen Ran

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit promising prospects as supercapacitor electrode materials due to the high specific surface area, adjustable pore structure and flexible structural design, but suffer from low conductivity, unstable structure and easy collapse. In this work, by selecting nickel (Ⅱ) nitrate hexahydrate and 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (EAMTD, containing various functional groups), a series of Ni-MOFs-EAMTD samples were fabricated in a mixed solvent system of N, N-dimethylformamide and ethylene glycol. EAMTD and mixed solvents provided a coordination environment rich in S, N and O heteroatoms for Ni ions, enhancing the delocalization of charge throughout the framework. The synergistic electronic interaction improved electrical conductivity and electrochemical performance of the Ni-MOFs-EAMTD, which demonstrated a high specific capacitance of 1608.0 F·g -1 at 1 A·g -1 . And assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with activated carbon, it exhibited high energy density (39.2 Wh·kg -1 ) and power density (850.0 W·kg -1 ). More significantly, the ASC exhibits self-regenerative property. After 10000 cycles, the specific capacitance of ASC dropped to 45%, then recovered to 65%, which was attributed to the decomposition of Ni-MOFs-EAMTD into smaller nanoparticles and the release of active sites to compensate for the capacitance. This work provides a feasible strategy to develop MOFs-based electrode materials, paving the way for secondary resource utilization and extended industrial chain development.

Gas atmospheres intrigued microstructure evolution of Ni–Ti based MOFs with exceptional impact on magnesium hydride for hydrogen storage

Zheng Lin-Xin,Zhang Liu-Ting,Wu Fu-Ying,Li Hong,Fang Fang

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is recognized as a promising candidate for solid-state hydrogen storage due to its high hydrogen capacity and safety. However, its highly stable thermodynamics and slow kinetics pose challenges to its commercial application. To effectively solve these problems, Ni–Ti based MOFs (NT-MOF and NT-MOF- x ( x  = Ar, O 2 , and H 2 )) are prepared as effective catalysts for MgH 2 , with NT-MOF-Ar/MgH 2 showing the best performance. The onset dehydrogenation temperature of NT-MOF-Ar/MgH 2 is reduced to 197 °C and remains 97% H 2 capacity after 20 cycles. An interface reconstruction which enables its superior catalytic performance is evidenced. By in situ forming a multiphase-multivalence Mg-Ni-Ti-C catalytic interface: Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 act as a hydrogen pump, multivalence Ti facilitates charge transfer, while amorphous carbon mitigates agglomeration, enhancing long-term performance. Our work verifies the interface reconstruction in a MgH 2 hydrogen storage system, thus paving ways for developing new catalytic mechanisms and efficient catalysts for hydrogen storage and other energy related fields.
