MoS2/CoS2 heterostructures embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets towards enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Kang Ji,Katarzyna Matras-Postolek,Ruixia Shi,Ling Chen,Quande Che,Junpeng Wang,Yunlong Yue,Ping Yang

MoS 2 /CoS 2 heterostructures on nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are prepared using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 as precursors. Two dimensional (2D)/2D MoS 2 /CoS 2 heterostructures consist of layered CoS 2 and MoS 2 . The (210) facet of CoS 2 and the (002) facet of MoS 2 contacted vertically resulted in improved electrons and holes transfer in the interface. The ratios of CoS 2 /MoS 2 plays an important role to get high performance (CoS 2 /MoS 2 /NC-n%, e.g. n = 20, 25, 30, 35 wt%). Meanwhile, sample CoS 2 /MoS 2 /NC-25% revealed the best HER activity, suggesting the sample has the largest number of active sites and the fastest electron transfer rate. In addition, sample CoS 2 /MoS 2 /NC-25% exhibited the lowest onset potential of 51 mV, the lowest potential of 215 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and the smallest Tafel slope of 80.0 mV dec −1 . The result is utilizable for the construction of heterostructures with excellent HER performance.

Pt Edge-Doped MoS2: Activating the Active Sites for Maximized Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance

Liyuan Pei,Haohui Qiao,Bin Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Ruth Anaya Davis,Keyu Zhu,Lei Xia,Pei Dong,Mingxin Ye,Jianfeng Shen

The demand of clean energy calls for efficient and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Fabricating hybrid catalysts from noble/non-noble catalysts is a practical route to reducing the consumption of noble metals and enhancing catalytic efficiency. Here, 2H-MoS 2 is etched and edge-doped with Pt nanoparticles using focused ion beam and photoreduction techniques. Precise comparison of as-prepared samples demonstrates that the enhancement of catalytic performance can be controlled through tuning the catalyst defect length. On this basis, remarkably high performance is obtained by designing a specific defect array that is superior to commercial Pt/C with less Pt loading and higher mass activity. It has been proved by experimentation and COMSOL Multiphysics simulations that the promotion of catalytic activity not only benefits from the synergistic effect of Pt and edge active sites, but also contributes to the increased potential at the edges of the designed defect. This study sheds light on the mechanism of understanding nanoscale edge-doped hybrid catalysts and provides a feasible strategy for the full utilization of noble metals.

Elucidating the layer-number impact of MoS2 on the adsorption and hydrogenation of CO

Jia-Xin He,Yong-Shan Xiao,Chang Liu,Min-Li Zhu,Yong-Hong Song,Zhong-Wen Liu

MoS 2 is an attractive sulfur-resistant catalyst for directly converting sulfur-containing syngas to high value-added chemicals. However, the effect of the layered structure on the catalytic activity for CO hydrogenation reactions is far from clear. Herein, MoS 2 /carbon composite catalysts with 1–8 stacking layers in MoS 2 crystallites are synthesized, and the impact of the layer numbers on the catalytic performance is probed for the low-temperature methanation of sulfur-containing syngas. The results indicate that the turnover frequency of CO methanation increases from 2.4 × 10 -3 to 3.7 × 10 -3 s −1 with decreasing layer numbers of MoS 2 crystallites from 8.3 to 1.1. This result is thoroughly explained by the fact that the higher ratio of rim sites in MoS 2 crystallites with fewer layer numbers enhances the catalytic activity, which originates from the facilitated activation of CO and H 2 . These understandings are important for the rational design and development of more efficient MoS 2 -based catalysts for CO hydrogenation.

Layer-structure adjustable MoS2 catalysts for the slurry-phase hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Donge Wang,Jiahe Li,Huaijun Ma,Chenggong Yang,Zhendong Pan,Wei Qu,Zhijian Tian

Slurry-phase hydrogenation technology is the frontier topic in the efficient conversion of heavy oils into light fractions around the world. Developing highly active dispersed MoS 2 catalysts is the major obstacle to realize the industrial application of upgrading heavy oils. In this work, both top-down ball-milling method and bottom-up hydrothermal method were designed to synthesize MoS 2 catalysts with controllable layer structures. The stacking layers and lateral sizes for micro-scaled MoS 2 catalysts by ball-milling method can be reduced to their limits and stabilize at 6 ∼ 8 layers and lateral size of ca. 30 nm. The more flexible bottom-up hydrothermal method can construct MoS 2 catalysts with much smaller lateral sizes and fewer stacking layers, especially, MoS 2 catalyst fabricated with ammonium tetrathiomolybdate as Mo and S precursor possesses average stacking layers of 2 and lateral size of 5 ∼ 10 nm. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, phenanthrene and naphthalene were used as model compounds of heavy oils to investigate the catalytic hydrogenation performance of designed MoS 2 catalysts. The catalytic activities of MoS 2 catalysts can be well correlated with their stacking layers and lateral size. The edges of top and bottom S-Mo-S atomic layers for MoS 2 sheets, named rim sites, are positively correlated with the exposure of active sites for catalytic hydrogenation of PAHs. The highest catalytic activity of MoS 2 catalyst results from its layer structures of 100% rim sites and the smallest lateral size of 5 ∼ 10 nm, which is beneficial to expose maximum active sites for catalytic hydrogenation reactions. This work can guide us to design the highly active hydrogenation catalysts, and promote the industrial application of upgrading heavy oils.

MXene-Bonded hollow MoS2/Carbon sphere strategy for high-performance flexible sodium ion storage

Zeyu Yuan,Junming Cao,Shulga Valerii,Hao Xu,Lili Wang,Wei Han

Sodium-ion batteries, as a promising alternative to the lithium-ion battery, have attracted extensive attention. However, due to the larger ion radius and higher standard reduction potential, the sodium-ion batteries still face poor cycle stability and relatively low energy density problems. In this work, a carbon sphere-supported Nb 2 CT x MXene/MoS 2 hierarchical structure has been designed and synthesized through hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly methods. The design strategy successfully improves the utilization efficiency of the MoS 2 carbon sphere as a support skeleton and reducing the diffusion path length of Na ions, leading to an improved specific capacity and rate performance. Moreover, Nb 2 CT x sheets also effectively inhibit the capacity attenuation caused by MoS 2 shedding, thus achieving the long cycle life of the sodium-ion battery. As a result, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode delivers an ultrahigh reversible capacity, long cycling stability, and superior capacity retention rate. Notably, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode can also obtain a considerable capacity of 196 mAh g −1 at a current density of 20 A g −1 . The full cell of SIBs was assembled, and the flexibility of the battery was tested. The density functional theory simulation results show that the sodium ion has a smaller diffusion barrier under this material design strategy.

Interfacial polarization in ultra-small Co3S4−MoS2 heterostructure for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiabing Luo,Yan Zhou,Yongxiao Tuo,Yufeng Gu,Xingzhao Wang,Qianyu Guo,Chen Chen,Dong Wang,Shutao Wang,Jun Zhang

Constructing suitable heterostructured electrocatalysts and understanding their interfacial effects have been considered as an effective strategy to improve the intrinsic activity of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, ultra-small Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 heterostructure was synthesized using a precursor solubility controlling method. It is found that the electrocatalytic HER performance of the heterostructured catalysts exhibited a low overpotential of 260 mV at 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and possessed remarkable stability over 100 h continuous electrolysis at high current density (100 mA cm −2 ). Besides, Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 electrocatalyst is applied as the cathode material for a homemade membrane electrode device for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. It shows that the electrocatalyst has a comparable catalytic activity to that of 20% Pt/C catalyst at 70 °C. The outstanding performance of the ultra-small Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 heterostructure is attributed to the efficient mass transport benefitting from its unique ultra-small hollow structure and the rapid electron transfer at the interface between Co 3 S 4 and MoS 2 . XPS characterizations and DFT calculations confirm that the interfacial polarization and the corresponding electron transfer from Co 3 S 4 to MoS 2 at the interface optimizes the charge state of the catalyst and tunes the binding strength to the intermediates during each elementary step of the HER process. To be exact, the electron transfer promotes the adsorption of OH* on the charge-depleted Co 3 S 4 sites and the adsorption of H* on the charge-enriched MoS 2 sites, respectively, thereby reducing the free energy barrier of the water dissociation step (rate-limiting step) and improving the reaction kinetics. The solubility controlling strategy may provide a novel idea for rational design and synthesis of superior stability transition metal sulfides HER electrocatalysts.

Du Heng,Zhang Qipeng,Zhao Biao,Marken Frank,Gao Qiancheng,Lu Hongxia,Guan Li,Wang Hailong,Shao Gang,Xu Hongliang,Zhang Rui,Fan Bingbing

In order to prevent the microwave leakage and mutual interference, more and more microwave absorbing devices are added into the design of electronic products to ensure its routine operation. In this work, we have successfully prepared MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x hierarchical composites by one-pot hydrothermal method and focused on the relationship between structures and electromagnetic absorbing properties. Supported by comprehensive characterizations, MoS 2 nanosheets were proved to be anchored on the surface and interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x through a hydrothermal process. Additionally, TiO 2 nanoparticles were obtained in situ . Due to these hierarchical structures, the MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites showed greatly enhanced microwave absorbing performance. The MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites exhibit a maximum reflection loss value of −33.5 dB at 10.24 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth covers 3.1 GHz (13.9–17 GHz) at the thickness of 1.0 mm, implying the features of wide frequency and light weight. This work in the hierarchical structure of MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites opens a promising door to the exploration of constructing extraordinary electromagnetic wave absorbents.

Zhengshan Tian,Heng Guo,Wei Liu,Kesheng Cao,Suzhen Bai,Qinlong Peng

MoS 2 nanosheets of pure semi-conducting hexagonal phase (2H-phase) have lots of potential applications due to their unique and novel property, and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer is very easy to happen between zero-dimensional (0D) perovskite quantum dots and two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 nanosheets. Herein, we demonstrate that a facile and green method to fabricate MoS 2 nanosheets by sonication-assisted exfoliation of MoS 2 powders in pure water after a hydrothermal reaction . The experimental results confirm that MoS 2 ultrathin sheets obtained from powders are monolayer and few-layer 2H-phase nanosheets with size of 100–300 nm. Interestingly, the as-prepared MoS 2 nanosheets have excellent performance to quench the fluorescence of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots. It can provide a new way for us to explore energy resonance transfer between 0D quantum dots and 2D layered materials.

Fabrication of a hybrid ultrafiltration membrane based on MoS2 modified with dopamine and polyethyleneimine

Xin Wen,Can He,Yuyan Hai,Xiaofan Liu,Rui Ma,Jianyu Sun,Xue Yang,Yunlong Qi,Jingyun Chen,Hui Wei

The hydrophobicity of ultrafiltration membranes is the main cause of membrane fouling and reduced permeability, so it is necessary to improve the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance of ultrafiltration membrane materials. MoS2 nanoparticles that were modified with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), named MoS2-PDA-PEI, were added to fabricate a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane (PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI) for the first time. The effects of modified MoS2 nanoparticles on membrane performance were clarified. The results indicated that the permeability, rejection, and anti-fouling capability of the hybrid PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI membrane have been improved compared with the pristine PES membrane. When the content of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles in the membrane is 0.5%, the pure water flux of the hybrid membrane reaches 364.03 L m−2 h−1, and the rejection rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) is 96.5% and 93.2% respectively. The flux recovery rate of HA reached 97.06%. As expected, the addition of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles promotes the formation of the porous structure and improves the hydrophilicity of the membrane, thereby improving its antifouling performance.

Electrochemical chloramphenicol sensors-based on trace MoS2 modified carbon nanomaterials: Insight into carbon supports

Shang Gao,Yaqing Zhang,Zhimin Yang,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Tong Zhang

Carbon nanomaterials are considered as potentially promising sensing materials for fabrication of high-performance electrochemical chloramphenicol (CAP) sensors. However, it is highly required to investigate the structure effect of carbon supports on electrochemical sensing performances. Herein, three typical carbon nanomaterials were selected as carbon supports to deposition of trace MoS 2 , including reduced graphene oxide (rGO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon black (CB), which were subsequently used to construct electrochemical CAP sensors. The combined characterizations of Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that these MoS 2 modified carbon nanomaterials show the morphology and microstructures similar with carbon supports as used. Electrochemical tests indicate that the sensing performances of these CAP sensors are dependent on the structure of carbon supports. Among all these MoS 2 modified carbon nanomaterials, MoS 2 modified rGO hybrids display large electrochemically active surface area and low interfacial resistance between electrolyte and electrode, resulting in the highest sensitivity of 3.581 μA μM −1 cm −2 . As a result, rGO is regarded as good candidate for fabrication of high-performance CAP sensors, compared to MWCNTs and CB. The present work not only clarifies structure effect of carbon supports on electrochemical sensing performances, but also provides help for the construction of high-performance electrochemical sensors and biosensors based on carbon nanomaterials.

Single-Layer MoS2 Grown on Atomically Flat SrTiO3 Single Crystal for Enhanced Trionic Luminescence

Chenxi Huang,Jun Fu,Miaomiao Xiang,Jiefu Zhang,Hualing Zeng,Xiang Shao

The elaborate interface interactions can be critical in determining the achievable functionality of a semiconductor heterojunction (SH), particularly when two-dimensional material is enclosed in the system and its thickness is at an atomic extreme. In this work, we have successfully constructed a SH model system composed of typical transition-metal chalcogenide (TMDs) and transition metal oxides (TMO) by directly growing molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) nanosheets on atomically flat strontium titanate (SrTiO3) single crystal substrates through a conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthetic method. Multiple measurements have demonstrated the uniform monolayer thickness and single crystallinity of the MoS2 nanosheets as well as the atomic flatness of the heterojunction surface, both characterizing an extremely high quality of the interface. Clear evidence have been obtained for the electron transfer from the MoS2 adlayer to the SrTiO3 substrate which varies against the interface conditions. More importantly, the photoluminescence of MoS2 is significantly tailored, which is correlated with both the cleanness of the interface and the crystal orientation of the SrTiO3 substrate. These results not only shed fresh lights on the structure–property relationship of the TMDs/TMO heterostructures but also manifest the importance of the ideal interface structure for a hybridized system.

Engineering Eu3+-incorporated MoS2 nanoflowers toward efficient photothermal/photodynamic combination therapy of breast cancer

Shengyu Zhou,Xiaodan Jiao,Ying Jiang,Yanan Zhao,Peng Xue,Yingshuai Liu,Jing Liu

Two-dimensional MoS 2 (2D-MoS 2 ) and its nanocomposites have been extensively studied in cancer therapy research since their prominent surface area and NIR absorption ability. In this work, Eu 3+ -incorporated MoS 2 (MoS 2 :Eu 3+ ) nanoflowers with enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) were successfully developed by a one-step bottom-up hydrothermal method. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the photothermal agents MoS 2 :5%Eu 3+ nanoflowers have a PCE at ~ 49.05%, which is 1.75 times higher than the pristine MoS 2 . MoS 2 :5%Eu 3+ as efficient photosensitizers also promote generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 808 nm laser irradiation, thus achieving photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancers at the same time. Enhanced in vitro breast cancer therapy through the combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and PDT is clearly proved by using the MoS 2 :Eu 3+ nanosheet as a multifunctional nanoprobe. The unique MoS 2 :Eu 3+ works as a promising nanoprobe for PDT/PTT cancer therapies, and also provides a novel strategy for PCE improvement of the 2D-MoS 2 .
