The controllable self-assembly of amphiphilic mixed polymers grafted gold nanoparitcles (AuNPs) leads to strong interparticle plasmonic coupling, which can be tuned to the near-infrared (NIR) region for enhanced photothermal therapy (PTT). In this study, an improved thiolation method was adopted for ATRP and ROP polymer to obtain amphiphilic brushes of PMEO 2 MA-SH and PCL-SH. By anchoring PCL-SH and PMEO 2 MA-SH onto the 14 nm AuNPs, a smart hybrid building block for self-assembly was obtained. Increasing the PCL/PMEO 2 MA chain ratio from 0.8:1, 2:1 and 3:1 to 7:1, the structure of gold assemblies (GAs) was observed to transfer from vesicle to large compound micelle (LCM). Contributed to the special dense packed structure of gold nanoparticles in LCM, the absorption spectrometry of gold nanoparticles drastically red-shifted from 520 nm to 830 nm, which endowed the GAs remarkable NIR photothermal conversion ability. In addition, gold has high X-ray absorption coefficient which qualifies gold nanomaterial a potential CT contrast agent Herein, we obtain a novel gold assembly structure which can be utilized as potential photothermal therapeutic and CT contrast agents. In vitro and In vivo studies testified the excellent treatment efficacy of optimum GAs as a PTT and CT contrast agent. In vitro degradation test, MTT assay and histology study indicated that GAs was a safe, low toxic reagent with good biodegradability. Therefore, the optimum GAs with strong NIR absorption and high X-ray absorption coefficient could be used as a theranostic agent and the formation of novel gold large compound micelle might offers a new theory foundation for engineering design and synthesis of polymer grafted AuNPs for biomedical applications.

Pure β-KYF4 nanocrystals codoped with Er3+/Yb3+ and Tm3+/Yb3+ were successfully synthesized via the thermal decomposition of trifluoroacetate precursors using oleic acid and octadecylene as coordinating solvents. The up-conversion optical properties of the β-KYF4 nanocrystals with different lanthanide (Ln)-doped ions (Yb3+/Er3+, Yb3+/Tm3+) were investigated. It is found that the colloidal dispersion of β-KYF4:Yb,Er/Tm nanocrystals display strong multiple up-conversion emission spanning from the deep UV-to-NIR regions under 980 nm excitation. Pure β-KYF4 nanocrystals codoped with Er3+/Yb3+ and Tm3+/Yb3+ can emit bright blue, green, yellow, and red emissions visible to the naked eye by adjusting the concentrations of Yb3+ sensitizer ion and Er3+ or Tm3+ activator ions. Moreover, the UC luminescent colors can be tuned for the four colors from blue to green to yellow and finally to red emission in the β-KYF4:X%Yb3+/(0.2%–2%)Er3+ and β-KYF4:25%Yb3+/0.2%Tm3+ colloidal samples. This work substantially expands our understanding of this category of KYF4 upconversion nanocrystals.

Recently, combining long afterglow materials with organic fluorescent dyes, particularly carbon dots (CDs) to produce heterojunction and improve its luminescence and persistence properties became an important research direction. However, the precise role of these internal defects in the energy transfer process of CD@inorganic matrix composite fluorescent materials has not been thoroughly discussed. Establishing matching trap level to promote the energy transfer between the trap level and CDs level not only helps to enhance the afterglow performance, but also can explain the heterogeneous structure interaction between organic–inorganic fluorescent materials. Herein, ZLAGC@CDs luminescent composite is successfully synthesized via coating CDs on Zn 1- x (Li/Al) x Ga 2 x O 4 :0.005Cr 3+ (ZLAGC, x = 0–1), which exhibits a unique double emission at ≈430 nm (the defect luminescence of CDs) and 718 nm (the 2 E→ 4 A 2 transition of Cr 3+ ). After coating, the energy transfer from the defect level of CDs to the excited state of Cr 3+ enhanced the NIR emission. The electron transfer between the defect level of CDs and the split deeper trap level of ZLAGC also improved the visible and near-infrared (NIR) afterglow. The fluorescence and afterglow signals of ZLAGC@CDs are highly sensitive to solution pH under acidic conditions, indicating that the prepared fluorescent composite has potential application in acid microenvironment fluorescence detection.

The poor 5-year survival rate for bladder cancers is associated with the lack of efficient diagnostic and treatment techniques. Despite cystoscopy-assisted photomedicine and external radiation being promising modalities to supplement or replace surgery, they remain invasive or fail to provide real-time navigation. Here, we report non-invasive fractionated photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer with full-course real-time near-infrared-II imaging based on engineered X-ray-activated nanotransducers that contain lanthanide-doped nanoscintillators with concurrent emissions in visible and the second near-infrared regions and conjugated photosensitizers. Following intravesical instillation in mice with carcinogen-induced autochthonous bladder tumours, tumour-homing peptide-labelled nanotransducers realize enhanced tumour regression, robust recurrence inhibition, improved survival rates, and restored immune homeostasis under X-ray irradiation with accompanied near-infrared-II imaging. On-demand fractionated photodynamic therapy with customized doses is further achieved based on quantifiable near-infrared-II imaging signal-to-background ratios. Our study presents a promising non-invasive strategy to confront the current bladder cancer dilemma from diagnosis to treatment and prognosis.

Visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy technology has been extensively utilized for the determination of soluble solids content (SSC) in fruits. Nonetheless, the spectral distortion resulting from temperature variations in the sample leads to a decrease in detection accuracy. To mitigate the influence of temperature fluctuations on the accuracy of SSC detection in fruits, using watermelon as an example, this study presents a knowledge-guided temperature correction method utilizing one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNN). This method consists of two stages: the first stage involves utilizing 1D-CNN models and gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) method to acquire gradient-weighted features correlating with temperature. The second stage involves mapping these features and integrating them with the original Vis/NIR spectrum, and then train and test the partial least squares (PLS) model. This knowledge-guided method can identify wavelength bands with high temperature correlation in the Vis/NIR spectra, offering valuable guidance for spectral data processing. The performance of the PLS model constructed using the 15 °C spectrum guided by this method is superior to that of the global model, and can reduce the root mean square error of the prediction set (RMSEP) to 0.324°Brix, which is 32.5 % lower than the RMSEP of the global model (0.480°Brix). The method proposed in this study has superior temperature correction effects than slope and bias correction, piecewise direct standardization, and external parameter orthogonalization correction methods. The results indicate that the knowledge-guided temperature correction method based on deep learning can significantly enhance the detection accuracy of SSC in watermelon, providing valuable reference for the development of PLS calibration methods.

The key to the treatment of choroidal melanoma (CM) is to improve diagnostic efficiency and find a high-performance treatment to replace the traditional treatment of radiotherapy and enucleation. In this paper, for the first time, long afterglow luminescence material was applied to the integrated diagnosis and treatment of eyes, with its unique advantages in photoluminescence and afterglow luminescence to solve the bottleneck problem of real-time irradiation required for photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PTT and PDT). Based on the excellent photoluminescence and afterglow properties of Zn 1.3 Ga 1.4 Ge 0.3 O 4 :Cr 0.004 Yb 0.04 Er 0.004 (ZGGO) nanoparticles, a nanoplatform ZGGO@Au@UiO-66@ZnPc:Dox-FA (GAUZD-FA) for NIR-Ⅱ imaging and triple-synergistic therapy (PTT, PDT and sustained-release drug) was constructed. GAUZD-FA showed excellent imaging and therapeutic ability for CM in vitro and in vivo under a systematic comparison of NIR imaging detection and anti-tumor activity. In addition, the precise active targeting of folic acid (FA) on tumor cells protected normal tissues from damage and stayed intraocularly for a relatively long time. This multi-functional nanoplatform provides a new strategy for an ideal mode of single injection and multiple treatments of CM.

Strong Coulomb force between photogenerated electrons and holes often results in high level exciton pairs during the photocatalytic process, which hinders the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the photocatalytic reaction, particularly for the photocatalysis under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Hence, it is crucial to dissociate excitons into free carriers. In this study, we propose a novel amorphous–crystalline heterojunction of a-CeO 2 /SnFe 2 O 4 for the NIR-driven photocatalytic degradation and sterilization. The introduction of disorder–order interface in heterojunction could greatly enhance the built-in electric field, thereby serving for exciton dissociation. Additionally, the presence of oxygen vacant sites in the a-CeO 2 /SnFe 2 O 4 system can effectively modulate the electronic structure of the material, facilitating exciton dissociation in conjunction with the built-in electric field. The DFT simulation proved the positive impact of the disorder–order interface on charge separation, as well as its enhancement on the activation of O 2 and H 2 O molecules. This work provides a theoretical support for the creation of disorder–order interface to promote exciton dissociation and enhance photocatalytic performance.

In this work we present a near-infrared (NIR)-operated nanoswitch based on chitosan nanoparticles (EpCAM-CS-co-PNVCL@IR780/IMQ NPs) that induces cascade immunogenic tumor ferroptosis via cytokine storm. The formulation was prepared by loading a photosensitiser (IR780) and an immunotherapeutic drug (imiquimod; IMQ) into temperature- and pH-responsive chitosan-based NPs functionalized with tumor-targeting aptamers. The EpCAM aptamer can chaperone the NPs selectively into cancer cells, and allow them to enter the cell nucleus. In vi tr o and in vi v o assays revelaed that the NPs were able to effectively induce the immunogenic ferroptosis of cancer cells. Under NIR irradiation, EpCAM-CS-co-PNVCL@IR780/IMQ cause cell death in tumors via photothermal therapy. Moreover, IMQ promotes the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs), which then activate cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs); these T-cells go on to provide immunotherapy of metastatic tumor cells. The metastatic tumor cells can be induced to undergo ferroptosis by the addition of arachidonic acid (AA), which interacts with interferon cytokines (IFN- γ ) released from CTLs.

Near-infrared (NIR)-II fluorescence imaging-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown great potential for precise diagnosis and treatment of tumors in deep tissues; however, its performance is severely limited by the undesired aggregation of photosensitizers and the competitive relationship between fluorescence emission and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Herein, we report an example of an anionic pentamethine cyanine (C5T) photosensitizer for high-performance NIR-II fluorescence imaging-guided PDT. Through the counterion engineering approach, a triphenylphosphine cation (Pco) modified with oligoethylene glycol chain is synthesized and adopted as the counterion of C5T, which can effectively suppress the excessive and disordered aggregation of the resulting C5T-Pco by optimizing the dye amphipathicity and enhancing the cyanine-counterion interactions. Dynamic tuning of fluorescence characteristics and ROS generation is achieved at the aggregate level, resulting in an impressive type I ROS generation under 760 nm light irradiation, accompanied by efficient NIR-II fluorescence emission excited at 808 nm. As a result, excitation wavelength selective NIR-II fluorescence imaging-guided PDT has been successfully demonstrated for tumor diagnosis and therapeutics of female mice.

To better utilize the spectral features of near-infrared and visible light and address issues in traditional suspension particle size detection, such as long measurement cycles, high costs, and complex operation, we propose a new method that combines multispectral sensor characterization technology with machine learning algorithms for rapid particle size measurement. By integrating a lab-designed light source driving circuit and spectral data acquisition device, we obtained 15 spectral data points for visible light, near-infrared, and red–blue–green (RGB) values to build a prediction model. The near-infrared-based model obtained a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of 0.9130, whereas models combining RGB-near-infrared and visible-near-infrared features performed best, with R 2 values of 0.9670 and 0.9845. These models improved performance by 5.91% and 7.83%, effectively overcoming the limitations of single spectral features in different suspensions. This combination of visible and near-infrared light with machine learning proves effective for detecting average particle size in suspensions.

Sensitive detection and effective inactivation of bacteria are essential in preventing foodborne bacterial infection that poses a significant threat to human health. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR)-driven multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was constructed for detection and inactivation of S. aureus . Based on the covalent bonding between amine and carboxyl groups, carboxyl-functionalized SA31 aptamer was immobilized on the PDA/MnO 2 photoelectrode. In the presence of S. aureus , SA31 aptamer can specifically capture S. aureus , causing the decrease of photocurrent signal owing to steric hindrance effect. Leveraging photocurrent-off signal, there existed a satisfied linear relationship between the photocurrent variation and the logarithm of S. aureus concentration, achieving a wide linear range from 10 to 10 7 CFU/mL with a low detection limit of 2.0 CFU/mL. Notably, PDA/MnO 2 with peroxidase-like activity facilitated the catalytic oxidation of S. aureus with assistance of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to cause the inactivation of S. aureus . Desorption of inactivated S. aureus from the photoelectrode led to a recovery of photocurrent signal, enabling a "signal on" switch. Simultaneously, the excellent photothermal performance of the PDA/MnO 2 converted light energy into heat energy under the irradiation of NIR light (808 nm, 1.5 W/cm 2 ), triggering the synergistic antibacterial effect against S. aureus (97.36%). This work provides a novel strategy for fabricating the detection and inactivation of bacteria in practical applications.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have great potential to replace traditional antifouling coatings due to their efficient, green, and broad-spectrum antifouling performance. However, the lubricant dissipation problem of SLIPS severely restricts its further development and application, and the robust SLIPS continues to be extremely challenging. Here, a composite phase-change lubricant layer consisting of paraffin, silicone oil, and MXene is designed to readily construct a stable and NIR-responsive self-healing phase-change solid slippery surface (PCSSS). Collective results showed that PCSSS could rapidly achieve phase-change transformation and complete self-healing under NIR irradiation and keep stable after high-speed water flushing, centrifugation, and ultrasonic treatment. The antifouling performance of PCSSS evaluated by protein, bacteria, and algae antiadhesion tests demonstrated the adhesion inhibition rate was as high as 99.99%. Moreover, the EIS and potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicated that PCSSS had stable and exceptional corrosion resistance (|Z|0.01Hz = 3.87 × 108 Ω·cm2) and could effectively inhibit microbiologically influenced corrosion. The 90 day actual marine test reveals that PCSSS has remarkable antifouling performance. Therefore, PCSSS presents a novel, facile, and effective strategy to construct a slippery surface with the prospect of facilitating its application in marine antifouling and corrosion protection.
