Synthesis of Well-Defined PVDF-Based Amphiphilic Block Copolymer via Iodine Transfer Polymerization for Antifouling Membrane Application

Luqing Zhang,Zhongkai Zhu,Umair Azhar,Jiachen Ma,Yabin Zhang,Chuanyong Zong,Shuxiang Zhang

An innovative strategy is devised to obtain poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes with splendid fouling resistance using amphiphilic block copolymer containing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) segments as modification agent. The PVDF-based block copolymer with poly[2-(N,N-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate] as the hydrophilic segment (PVDF-b-PDMAEMA) was successfully fabricated by iodine transfer polymerization. This strategy not only improved the PVDF membrane structure and hydrophilicity but also assisted in fouling resistance properties as an ultrafiltration membrane. The obtained PVDF/PVDF-b-PDMAEMA blend membrane displayed excellent water flux, which was enhanced 3 fold compared with that of the original membrane. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection ratio (≥90%) was maintained at a reasonable level. Meanwhile, by incorporation of the amphiphilic block copolymer, the PVDF-based modified membrane possessed excellent protein resistance and high flux recovery ability. The blend membranes with high BSA separation efficiency and excellent antifouling properties will find promising applications in the field of separation science specifically in sewage purification.

Anti-irreversible fouling of precisely-designed PVDF-ZnO membrane: Effects of ion strength and co-existing cations

Ning Li,Yu Tian,Jianhui Zhao,Lingchao Kong,Jun Zhang,Wei Zuo,Hao Cui,Qingyuan Lin

In this work, the atomic layer deposition-zinc oxide (ALD-ZnO) modified membrane was fabricated and the effects of ionic strength, co-existing Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ on its fouling potential were systematically investigated. Results showed excellent anti-irreversible fouling performance of PVDF-ZnO modified membrane with co-existing cations. Attractively, the values of declined membrane flux dropped by 25.7%, 25.9% and 22.3% after ZnO modification in the presence of 50 mM NaCl, 1.0 mM Ca 2+ and 1.0 mM Mg 2+ , respectively. Besides, Ca 2+ was prone to cause membrane fouling than Mg 2+ . Furthermore, fitting of multistage filtration models revealed that membrane fouling was ascribed to dynamic adsorption initially, followed by surface and pores deposition when filtrating BSA with or without Mg 2+ . However, the modified membrane experienced reverse process with higher ionic strength or Ca 2+ addition due to BSA molecular cluster. Moreover, the reduced repulsive energy induced by charge screening and calcium bridging resulted in slight aggravation of membrane fouling. Interestingly, the flux of PVDF-ZnO fouled membrane was easily recovered after physical cleaning. These findings provided deep insight into practical application of ALD modified membrane in wastewater remediation.

An Efficient, Scalable Route to Robust PVDF-co-HFP/SiO2 Separator for Long-Cycle Lithium Ion Batteries

Bismark Boateng,Gaolong Zhu,Weiqiang Lv,Dongjiang Chen,Chao Feng,Muhammad Waqas,Shamshad Ali,Kechun Wen,Weidong He

A highly uniform, heterogeneous-phase composite separator is synthesized by a direct post-solidation process from the mixture of nano-SiO 2 /acetone monodisperse suspension and poly(vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF- co -HFP)/acetone gel, without any organic surfactants. This technique leads to the PVDF- co -HFP/SiO 2 composite separator outstanding microstructural uniformity. The incorporation of SiO 2 nanoparticles leads to reduced crystallinity (≈27%), enhanced wettability (≈14%), improved electrolyte uptake (≈420%), and enhanced mechanical strength (>14 MPa) of the composite separator. These enhanced properties of the separator translate into remarkable LiFePO 4 /Li battery performance with reduced polarization, a high room-temperature capacity of 165 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C, a high thermal dimensional stability (≈4.5% shrinkage after annealing at 160 °C for 1 h) and 5.2% capacity degradation after 1500 charge/discharge cycles at 2 C.

PVDF-Based Dielectric Composite Films with Excellent Energy Storage Performances by Design of Nanofibers Composition Gradient Structure

Yue Zhang,Qingguo Chi,Lizhu Liu,Tiandong Zhang,Changhai Zhang,Qingguo Chen,Xuan Wang,Qingquan Lei

The dielectric polymer-based films with excellent energy storage properties have been considered as potential candidates for flexible capacitors. In this study, the hierarchical gradient structures of the 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 nanofibers (BZCT NFs) are designed in the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite films. The composite films with different compositions of BZCT NFs gradient structure were prepared by layer-by-layer electrospinning, hot-pressing, and quenching processes. The microstructures and electrical properties have been studied, and the results indicate that the BZCT NFs gradient structures can simultaneously improve the polarization and the breakdown strength of the PVDF-based composite films, leading to the enhancement of energy storage density (9.8 J/cm3) compared to that of pristine PVDF films (4.2 J/cm3). This work provides an efficient route to improve the energy storage properties of polymer-based composite films by structure modulation.

Biomimetic fiber of PVDF@Ag enabling the multimodal sensing for biomechanics and biomolecules integrated by textile carrier

Dongzhen Chen,Yang Li,Jianzhao Gao,Meng Zhang,Junhao Liang,Tao Fu,Xiaoming Wu,Xinhai He,Liangjun Xia,Weilin Xu

Intelligent wearables with integrated biomechanics and biomolecule multimodal sensing systems are crucial for personalized healthcare. However, the modes of action of biomechanics and biomolecule sensing work in different ways. Hence, a method for manufacturing biomimetic fibers made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)@silver (Ag) is initially devised, and a textile carrier serves as a link for multimodal sensing of biomechanics and biomolecules. PVDF nanofiber membranes are created using a one-step electrospinning process . Next, by lowering the silver ion’s reduction potential, compact and homogenous Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are formed in-situ on the high-curvature PVDF fibers. Consequently, a PVDF@Ag fiber membrane with a piezoelectric response and a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is created, making it suitable for wearable sensors that can detect secreta molecules as well as muscle movements. PVDF@Ag fiber is twisted, taking inspiration from the spiral structure of butterfly antennae. Compared to untwisted, twisted PVDF@Ag fiber, this produces a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) output signal that is more stable and can resist for signal attenuation caused by tensile deformation during wearable sensing. The “fingerprint” spectra of SERS enable noninvasive extraction and detection of secretion signals at sweat and respiration. Additionally, a plausible correlation between the range of secretions produced and health-related data is examined. Additionally, the integrated PVDF@Ag by polyester fabric exhibits superior air permeability , moisture absorption , and antimicrobial properties. And, this multimodal sensing mechanism has an algorithm implanted with deep learning support. All things considered, the PVDF@Ag fiber functions as a bridge between biomolecules and biomechanics, which is essential for applications involving wearable healthcare management.

A PVDF/PU-based composite 3D flexible piezoelectric nanofiber aerogel for acoustic energy harvesting and noise reduction

Zhichao Zhang,Zheng Li,Qiujin Li,Xiuming Liu,Jixian Gong,Huiqin Li

Noise has become a significant global pollutant but is considered unconventional energy. General, flexible materials like fiber and fabrics cannot substantially improve noise reduction, especially in middle frequencies. This investigation presented a novel strategy based on acoustic energy harvesting. A kind of aerogel composed of strongly piezoelectric nanofiber was prepared using the Decentralized Freeze-Casting method. The aerogel demonstrates the function of absorbing low-frequency energy and medium to high-frequency sound in relation to noise. The sound absorption coefficient in the frequency test band can reach 0.58, and the noise reduction coefficient (NRC) can reach 0.36. The maximum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current tested during the acoustic-electrical conversion process are 48.2 V and 4.1 μA, respectively, and can be stored and used. In addition, the prepared nanofiber aerogel has good waterproof and mechanical properties. This work has a promising application in future noise management and acoustic energy conversion.

A PVDF-HFP-Based Gel Polymer Electrolyte onto Air Cathode by UV-Curing for Lithium–Oxygen Batteries

Mingming Cui,Hong Sun,Zhichao Xue,Qiang Li,Tianyu Zhang,Qunying Kang

Using gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) instead of liquid electrolytes is a sensible and effective strategy for safety reasons. A GPE membrane was prepared by UV-curing using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as the polymer substrate material and an optimized ratio. The GPE membrane exhibited good flexibility and a higher ionic conductivity (σ = 0.63 mS cm–1). The RuO2@C/GPE/Li (abbreviated as S-GPE) battery is employed to demonstrate the electrochemical performance of GPE. The battery exhibits an Rct of 255.9 Ω, accompanied by a lack of cycle stability, with a cycle life of only 110 h. The results indicate that it is challenging to enhance the battery’s overall performance by solely improving the internal transfer performance of the electrolyte and ignoring the high interface impedance caused by the “solid–solid” contact at the electrolyte–electrode interface. Based on these findings, a straightforward one-step method is adopted to combine GPE with the air cathode by in situ photopolymerization and assemble it into RuO2@C-GPE/Li (abbreviated as I-GPE) battery used to demonstrate the electrochemical performance of the integrated GPE. The Rct value of the battery is 89.66 Ω, with a notable improvement in cycle stability. The battery’s cycle life is 940 h, which is 8.5 times that of the sandwich structure lithium–oxygen battery. The results indicate that preparing an integrated GPE by in situ photopolymerization of the electrolyte electrode is a straightforward and effective method to improve poor interfacial compatibility and can provide a theoretical basis for subsequent in-depth research.

A Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)/Carboxylated g-C3N4 Composite Separator for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Caihong Xue,Xianlan Wang,Guijun Yang,Hao Yang,Hui Nan,Guocai Ma,Shiai Xu

Graphical A larger specific surface area and three-dimensional (3D) permeable lamellae carboxylated g-C 3 N 4 (HCN) are successfully prepared by HNO 3 and introduced into the PVDF-HFP to obtain a high-performance composite separator. The wettability and ionic conductivity of separator can be improved through the carboxylated HCN. The LFP || Li half-cell of the separator has a capacity of 71 % at a 5 C rate and 94 % after 400 cycles at a 2 C rate. Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) is a standard electrolyte membrane and binder material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the benefits of membrane formation and strong mechanical properties. Still, its use is limited due to unavoidable defects such as high crystallinity and poor electrochemical performance. In this paper, a larger specific surface area and three-dimensional (3D) permeable lamellae carboxylated g-C 3 N 4 (HCN) were successfully prepared by HNO 3 and introduced into the PVDF-HFP to obtain a high-performance composite separator. The wettability and electrolyte absorption of PVDF-HFP separator can be improved through the carboxylated HCN. More crucially, because PVDF-HFP has several active sites and low crystallinity, adding HCN can greatly increase the ionic conductivity of separators. The ionic conductivity of PH-HCN at 25 °C is 0.52 S cm −1 , 4.7 times higher than the initial PVDF-HFP membrane, and the oxidation potential can reach 4.8 V. The assembled lithium-ion batteries half-cell has a capacity of 71 % at a 5 C rate and 94 % after 400 cycles at a 2 C rate. Therefore, the improved separator has the potential to be applied to high-performance LIBs.

Preparation and Characterization of Hydrophilically Modified PVDF Membranes by a Novel Nonsolvent Thermally Induced Phase Separation Method

Ningen Hu,Tonghu Xiao,Xinhai Cai,Lining Ding,Yuhua Fu,Xing Yang

In this study, a nonsolvent thermally-induced phase separation (NTIPS) method was first proposed to fabricate hydrophilically-modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes to overcome the drawbacks of conventional thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) and nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) methods. Hydrophilically-modified PVDF membranes were successfully prepared by blending in hydrophilic polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at 140 °C. A series of PVDF/PVA blend membranes was prepared at different total polymer concentrations and blend ratios. The morphological analysis via SEM indicated that the formation mechanism of these hydrophilically-modified membranes was a combined NIPS and TIPS process. As the total polymer concentration increased, the tensile strength of the membranes increased; meanwhile, the membrane pore size, porosity and water flux decreased. With the PVDF/PVA blend ratio increased from 10:0 to 8:2, the membrane pore size and water flux increased. The dynamic water contact angle of these membranes showed that the hydrophilic properties of PVDF/PVA blend membranes were prominently improved. The higher hydrophilicity of the membranes resulted in reduced membrane resistance and, hence, higher permeability. The total resistanceRtof the modified PVDF membranes decreased significantly as the hydrophilicity increased. The irreversible fouling related to pore blocking and adsorption fouling onto the membrane surface was minimal, indicating good antifouling properties. Keywords:nonsolvent thermally-induced phase separation (NTIPS);PVDF/PVA blend membrane;hydrophilic modification;membrane resistance;antifouling property

Enhanced separation and antifouling properties of PVDF ultrafiltration membranes with surface covalent self-assembly of polyethylene glycol

Xinzhen Zhao,Huixia Xuan,Chunju He

Branched polyethylene glycol (PEG) was anchored onto a membrane surface by efficient covalent self-assembly to optimize the separation and antifouling properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes based on its excellent hydrophilic and antifouling properties. The results showed that the surface self-assembly method could effectively improve the stability of PEG and the surface wetting ability of the PVDF membrane, and simultaneously enhanced the water flux and rejection of modified membranes. Meanwhile, the fouling results showed the anchored PEG segments on the separation interface contributed to improve the antifouling performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with significantly improved anti-adsorption capacity for bovine serum albumin (BSA) and expectant water flux recovery ratios for BSA and humic acid (HA), two typical pollutants. This paper provides a sample modification idea and demonstrated covalent self-assembly was an effective method for surface modification.

Enhancing Thermoelectric and Cooling Performance of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 through Ferroelectric Polarization in Flexible Ag/PZT/PVDF/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 Film

Chengjun Li,Wang Li,Chengwei Sun,Zheng Ma,Yingchao Wei,Wenyuan Ma,Boyu Yang,Xin Li,Yubo Luo,Junyou Yang

Bi2Te3-based thin films are gaining recognition for their remarkable room temperature thermoelectric performance. Beyond the conventional “process–composition–performance” paradigm, it is highly desirable to explore new methods to enhance their performance further. Here, we designed a sandwich-structured Ag/PZT/PVDF/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3(BST) thin film device and effectively regulated the performance of the BST film by controlling the polarization state of the PZT/PVDF layers. Results indicate that polarization induces interlayer charge redistribution and charge transfer between PZT/PVDF and BST, thereby achieving the continuous modulation of the electrical transport characteristics of BST films. Finally, following polarization at a saturation voltage of 3 kV, the power factor of the BST film increased by 13% compared to the unpolarized condition, reaching 20.8 μW cm–1 K–2. Furthermore, a device with 7 pairs of P–N legs was fabricated, achieving a cooling temperature difference of 11.0 K and a net cooling temperature difference of 2.4 K at a current of 10 mA after the saturation polarization of the PZT/PVDF layer. This work reveals the critical effect of introducing ferroelectric layer polarization to achieve excellent thermoelectric performance of the BST film.
