The nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) represents a promising route for water treatment and NH3 generation. This process involves the deoxygenation of NO3− to form nitrite (NO2−), followed by its subsequent hydrogenation. However, discrepancies in the rates of these two steps result in a decrease in faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH3 yield rate. Herein, we demonstrated a tandem catalyst of (Cu7/Ag3)7-Ru3/C achieving a high NH3 yield rate of 3.45 mmol h−1 cm−2 (2.30 mol gcat−1 h−1) and a FE of 93.48% at −0.9 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. The Cu/Ag heterostructure greatly enhanced the conversion of NO3− to NO2− over a wide potential window due to the synergistic effect, while Ru, selectively adsorbing NO2−, provided active hydrogen derived from water hydrolysis to facilitate NH3 synthesis. Furthermore, (Cu7/Ag3)7-Ru3/C exhibited stable performance in a membrane electrode assembly over 60 hours, achieving an average NH3 yield rate of 6.90 mmol h−1. The ammonium chloride solid product was successfully obtained using an air stripping methodology. In situ characterization revealed that the surface microenvironment of Ru influenced the adsorption configuration of *NO and on-top adsorbed NO was more favorable for ammonia synthesis compared to bridge-adsorbed NO. The overall reaction pathway involved stepwise deoxygenation to form *N and subsequent gradual hydrogenation.

A sensor for H2O2 and H2O2-related reactant was constructed with oligonucleotides and Ru(bipy)2dppx2+ (bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, dppx = 7,8-dimethyl-dipyridophenazine), which was performed by converting the H2O2-induced DNA cleavage into the change of luminescence. The ‘DNA light switch’ Ru(bipy)2dppx2+ could emit strong luminescence in the presence of dsDNA. DNA cleavage occurred upon addition of H2O2 due to the Fenton reaction, which resulted in the decrease of the luminescence of Ru(bipy)2dppx2+. Therefore, the luminescence intensity depended on the concentration of H2O2 and H2O2-related reactants, and the detection limits for H2O2, uric acid and cholesterol were 0.20 μM, 0.46 μM and 1.25 μM, respectively. The recovery varied between 94.0% and 105.0% when the assay was applied to the determination of uric acid and cholesterol in biological samples, which demonstrated the good practicability of the assay.

A simple, economic, highly sensitive and highly selective electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of tetrodotoxin (TTX) has been developed at Nafion-graphene-Ru(bpy)32+ composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Nafion can be used as a modified electrode material to achieve the one-step immobilization of graphene and Ru(bpy)32+ due to its good electrochemical stability and high ion selectivity. The modified glassy carbon electrode not only can be acted as a solid phase microextraction tool to perform the enrichment of TTX, but also can provide good stability of the ECL sensor. Under optimal conditions, the ECL intensity of the sensor increased proportionally to the logarithmic concentrations of TTX in the range of 0.5–5000 ng·mL−1 with a detection limit of 0.1 ng·mL−1. This one-step ECL sensor showed good performance in stability, reproducibility and precision.

The role of polymers in artificial photosystems has been studied in detail. The photosystems were composed of tris(2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) chloride as a photosensitizer (PS), colloidal Pt stabilized by polymer as a hydrogen-evolving catalyst and sodium ascorbate as an electron donor, without the addition of a traditional molecular electron mediator. Comprehensive insights into the production of hydrogen on irradiation with visible light were achieved. Several polymers, including neutral polyvinyl pyrrolidone, anionic poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) and poly(acrylic acid) not only stabilized the nanoparticles, but were also effective in the production of hydrogen. Under the optimum conditions, an outstanding apparent quantum efficiency of 12.8% for the evolution of hydrogen was achieved. The formation of self-assembled and spatially separated donor–acceptor complexes via the non-covalent intermolecular interaction between PS and the polymer–Pt was pivotal in the efficient conversion of solar energy to hydrogen fuel. Important details of the photo-induced electron and energy transfer processes in the self-assembled artificial photosystems were determined by nanosecond transient absorption spectrometry and time-resolved fluorescence spectrometry. The initial step in the photo-catalytic production of hydrogen was a reductive quenching of the triplet excited state of the PS by sodium ascorbate, leading to a reduced form of PS, which could then be quickly quenched by the polymer. The rate-determining step was the electron transfer from PS to the catalyst via the polymer bridge.

Novel amorphous carbon nanoparticles (ACNPs) with high electrochemiluminescence (ECL) quenching efficiency were prepared from candle soot with a quite simple approach. The prepared ACNPs were employed as novel energy quenchers for an ECL immunosensor on a disposable screen-printed carbon electrode array (SPCEA) substrate. Gold nanoparticles-doped chitosan composite film was utilized to immobilize Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -labeled antibody on the SPCEA, and ACNPs were linked with antigens to obtain ACNP-antigen conjugate. The immunoreaction between the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -labeled antibody and the ACNP-antigen conjugate bridged the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ donor and the ACNPs acceptor, which led to quenching of ECL emission from Ru(bpy) 3 2+ via energy transfer. In the presence of the target antigen, this antigen competed with the ACNP-antigen for the immobilized Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -labeled antibody, thus led to decreased occurrence of the ECL quenching. This ACNPs-based ECL quenching system was successfully applied to detect mouse IgG, which was used as a model analyte. The method showed a linear range of 0.50–400 ng mL −1 and a detection limit of 0.35 ng mL −1 . The results for real sample assay and recovery test demonstrated the reliability of this ECL quenching-based immunosensor. It could be further extended to multiplexed immunoassay of biomarker proteins for clinical diagnosis.

The present study reported the results on the water–gas shift (WGS) reaction over a series of Ru/C catalysts. It was found that the reduction method showed a remarkable effect on the catalytic activity of Ru/C catalysts over WGS reaction, which increased in an order of the reduction by NaBH4, ethylene glycol, H2. It has been shown that alkali additives with K2CO3 significantly improved the activity of the Ru/C catalysts. XPS results indicated that Ru species were further oxidized by the addition of K2CO3, which indicated an electron transfer from the alkali metal to the substrate, resulting in stronger bonding of the adsorbed gas. FTIR results showed that the absorption peak intensity of H2O and hydroxyl group increased with the increase of K2CO3 content, due to the strong hygroscopic ability of K2CO3. Through the addition of K2CO3 to the Ru/C catalyst, much more water was adsorbed around the catalytic active sites, reducing the strong adsorption of CO on the active sites. Thus the addition of K2CO3 balanced the concentration of water and CO on the active sites, which was considered to be the key step for low temperature WGS reaction over Ru supported on irreducible activated carbon.

Compared to noble metal catalysts at the nanoscale, single-atom catalysts are more likely to be poisoned then lead to the loss of activity during the catalytic oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) due to their unique coordination environment. Additionally, the commonly used low loading single-atom catalysts often suffer from limited active sites and low catalysts activities. Therefore, it is of great significance to synthesize stable and high-loading single-atom catalysts for CVOCs oxidation. In this study, a highly loaded (2.4 wt%) atomically dispersed 4RuCeO 2 -AA catalyst was synthesized through defect designing for the catalytic combustion of chlorobenzene (CB). By introducing defect sites on the CeO 2 supports using ascorbic acid, more atomically dispersed Ru were strongly anchored, significantly increasing the number of active sites and oxygen vacancies. With the same noble metal contents, the 4RuCeO 2 -AA catalyst exhibited superior performance in both CO 2 selectivity (99.6 % at 240 °C) and catalytic stability (no decay for 20 h). This enhanced performance can be attributed to the high dispersion of RuO x , strong Ru-O-Ce bonding energy, and an increased of chemically adsorbed oxygen, as well as the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is ubiquitous in industrial production and daily life. However, BPA is harmful to the health of fetuses and children due to its potential endocrine-disrupting effects. Hydrogenated bisphenol A (HBPA), an alicyclic diol generated from hydrogenating the double bonds of two benzene rings in the BPA molecule, is supposed to be a perfect substitute for BPA due to its stability and non-toxicity. Nevertheless, the rational design of high-performance catalysts for selectively converting BPA into HBPA remains a significant challenge. In this work, highly dispersed Ru immobilized by Al2O3 modified with Ni promoter (Ru/Ni-Al2O3) have been constructed, enabling BPA selective hydrogenation to produce HBPA under mild conditions. The doping of Ni promoter around Ru active sites effectively regulated the selectivity of target reaction. Both characterization and experimental results validated that the Ni promoter manipulated the electronic state of Ru through strong electron interaction between Ni and Ru, and thus the catalytic performance. In addition, the catalytic performance was also dependent on other reaction parameters such as H2 pressure, reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV), and hydrogen-oil volume ratio. The optimized Ru/0.1Ni-Al2O3 catalyst achieved a BPA conversion of 100% and an HBPA selectivity of 96.4% under optimal reaction conditions (6 MPa H2, 140 oC, 0.42 h-1 LHSV, and 1500:1 hydrogen-oil volume ratio).

Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts have demonstrated promising utilization potentiality to replace the much expensive iridium (Ir)-based ones for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) due to their high electrochemical activity and low cost. However, the susceptibility of RuO2-based materials to easily be oxidized to high-valent and soluble Ru species during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid media hinders the practical application, especially under current density above 500 mA cm–2. Here, a manganese-doped RuO2 catalyst with the hydroxylated metal sites (i.e., H–Mn0.1Ru0.9O2) is synthesized for acidic OER assisted by hydrogen peroxide, where the hydroxylation results in the valence state of the Ru sites below +4. The H–Mn0.1Ru0.9O2 catalyst demonstrates an overpotential of 169 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and promising stability for an OER over 1000 h in an acidic electrolyte. A PEMWE device fabricated with the H–Mn0.1Ru0.9O2 catalyst as the anode shows a current density of 1 A cm–2 at ∼1.65 V, along with a low degradation over continuous tens of hours. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results and theoretical calculations confirm that H–Mn0.1Ru0.9O2 performs the OER through the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway, where the synergistic effect of hydroxylation and Mn doping in RuO2 can effectively enhance the stability of Ru sites and lattice oxygen atoms.

Fabrication of metal/porous carbon catalysts with high catalytic activity and stability is highly desirable but challenging because the metal nanoparticles in these catalysts cannot have both high exposure and strong interaction with carbon support. Here, for the first time, a facile CO 2 -assisted one-pot pyrolysis (CAOP) strategy was developed to in situ liberate the inaccessible Ru sites without obviously affecting the size of Ru nanoparticles . The Ru@CN-700-80 prepared with the assistance of CO 2 exhibits a remarkable improvement in catalytic activity for levulinic acid hydrogenation compared with that without CO 2 during pyrolysis, giving a TOF of 28449 h −1 under mild conditions, which is superior to the reported Ru-based catalysts. Additionally, the Ru@CN-700-80 also demonstrates an excellent stability without activity loss after 10 cycles. We anticipate that this CAOP strategy addresses a crucial issue that currently plagues the design of metal/porous carbon catalyst with high catalytic performance applied in energy and environmental fields.

Developing an OER electrocatalyst that balances high performance with low cost is crucial for widely adopting PEM water electrolyzers. Ru-based catalysts are gaining attention for their cost-effectiveness and high activity, positioning them as promising alternatives to Ir-based catalysts. However, Ru-based catalysts can be prone to oxidation at high potentials, compromising their durability. In this study, we utilize a simple synthesis method to synthesize a SnO2, Nb2O5, and RuO2composite catalyst (SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2) with multiple interfaces and abundant oxygen vacancies. The large surface area and numerous active sites of the SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2catalyst lead to outstanding acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving current densities of 10, 50, and 200 mA cm−2at ultralow overpotentials of 287, 359, and 534 mV, respectively, significantly surpassing commercial IrO2. Moreover, incorporating Nb2O5into the SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2alters the electronic structure at the interfaces and generates a high density of oxygen vacancies, markedly enhancing durability. Consequently, the membrane electrode composed of SnO2/Nb2O5@RuO2and commercial Pt/C demonstrated stable operation in the PEM cell for 25 days at an industrial current density of 1 A cm−2. This research presents a convenient approach for developing a highly efficient and durable Ru-based electrocatalyst, underscoring its potential for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis.

Long-range order of electric dipoles means important physical properties such as ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity, making materials have broad applications in information storage, sensors, switches, and optical electric devices. However, the orientation control of electric dipoles remains a great challenge on a molecular/ion level. Herein, we report the realization of ferroelectric order via Cl–Cl halogen-bond interactions in hybrid double perovskite [CH2ClN(CH3)3]2NaRuCl6 (TCNRC) derived from [(CH3)4N]2NaRuCl6 (TNRC) for the first time. TCNRC shows spontaneous polarization (Ps = 2.67 μC cm–2) and piezoelectricity (d33 = 4 pC N1–) with a Curie temperature (Tc) of 320 K. This study reveals the important role of halogen-bonding interactions to form ferroelectric orders and provides new insights into the molecular level regulatory polarity in molecular ferroelectric systems.
