In this study, an environmentally friendly approach for surface modification of polymer membrane was reported, which named surface-initiated electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-eATRP). It was triggered after diffusion of a CuI/L activator generated at a working electrode. The introduction of electrochemically mediation can control the polymerization of monomers by a one-electron reduction of an initially added air-stable CuII salt. The reaction was carried out in an electrochemical cell with a three-electrode system at low temperature. Using this technique, hydrophilic polymer brushes of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) were grafted onto PES membrane surface. The effects of reaction conditions like polymerization time, monomer concentration, initiator amount, and different monomer on the polymerizations of monomer were investigated in detail. Based on these data, we concluded that the polymerization on polymer membrane surface could be controlled by mediating the reaction condition. Moreover, the precisely controlled polymerization may allow it to serve as excellent model systems for polymer membrane modification, in general, to illustrate the role of electrochemically mediating on the polymerization approach. And the water contact angle of the modified membrane decreased from 89° to 72°. The APTT of the modified membrane increased from 46 s to 81 s. Those results indicated that the surface modification by grafting PVP brushes provided practical application for the PES membranes with high surface properties.

Herein, the composite powder with a core–shell heterostructure (Fe–Si–Cr magnetic particles as the core and ZnSO 4 as the shell) was synthesized using hydrothermal method, and Fe–Si–Cr-based soft magnetic composites (SMCs) with an insulation layer of ZnO·SiO 2 ·Cr 2 O 3 (ZSC) composites were successfully prepared via powder heat treatment and cold pressing. The formation mechanism of the ZSC composite insulation layer was thoroughly investigated, and the impact of varying amounts of ZnSO 4 on the Fe-Si-Cr/ZSC SMCs’ microstructure and magnetic properties was analyzed. ZnSO 4 released oxygen during thermal decomposition and oxidation reaction occurred at the core–shell heterogeneous interface, forming ZSC composite insulation layer. The incorporation of ZnSO 4 significantly influenced the homogeneity and thickness of the composite insulation layer, effectively modulating the magnetic properties of Fe–Si–Cr/ZSC SMCs. This SMCs had the best magnetic properties after the addition of 2 wt% ZnSO 4 . Under 10 mT and 300 kHz, the relative permeability was 37.7, with a total loss of 248.8 kW/m 3 The method proposed in this study is beneficial for facilitating the advancement of SMCs towards high frequency and further optimizing its performance.

Near-infrared (NIR) organic photodetectors (OPDs) hold enormous commercial potential in wearable biosensing and imaging applications. However, their sensitivity remains comparatively lower than that of commercially available silicon-based photodetectors (Si PDs). In this study, we present highly sensitive NIR OPDs by incorporating an all-fused-ring small molecule acceptor, FM4, with low trap density into a conventional active layer system. FM4 effectively reduces traps in the active layer, resulting in a decrease in trap density from 1.57 × 10 15 to 8.86 × 10 14 cm −3 . Consequently, under −1 V bias, the OPD device with FM4 as the third component achieves an ultra-low real-measured noise current of 7.56 × 10 −15 A Hz −1/2 at 1 kHz, lower than that of commercial Si PDs, which is primarily attributed to the substantial decrease in trap density within the active layer. Due to its ultra-low noise current, the ternary device exhibits a high specific detectivity of 1.83 × 10 13 Jones at 840 nm under −1 V bias and a broad linear dynamic range of 155 dB. Its sensitivity exceeds that of Si PDs. Furthermore, this sensitive OPD device has been successfully utilized in single-pixel low-light imaging, delivering superior image clarity compared to Si PDs.

The characteristics and modification process of the composite were specified through a series of analytical methods. And stabilization experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of prepared materials. The optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite was obtained at impregnation ratio of 10%, pyrolysis temperature of 900℃ and pyrolysis time of 60 min. The modification process included the dissolution of calcium hydroxide, the formation of gypsum and ferrous silicate, the dehydration of gypsum, the reduction decomposition of calcium sulfate, the decomposition of calcium carbonate and the solid reaction at high temperature. The obtained optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite was a multifunctional material mainly composed of high contents of Ca, Fe, Si, S, which corresponding to FeS, CaS, Ca 2 SiO 4 , Ca 3 Al 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 , Ca 3 Fe 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 , Ca 5 (SiO 4 ) 2 SO 4 . The application of 5% optimal Ca–Fe–Si–S composite successfully lowed the leaching concentrations of As, Zn, Cu, Cd in arsenic slag to meet the discharging standard. Meanwhile, the non-specifically bound and specifically bound of As totally decreased by 3.72%, and the acid extractable species of Zn, Cu, Cd reduced by 11.20%, 29.37%, 2.76% respectively. The distribution of stable species for heavy metals significantly increased as united results of surface complexation, chemical precipitation and ion/anion exchange reactions between the prepared composite and heavy metals. The findings of this research provide an effective material for the simultaneous stabilization of multiple heavy metals.

To enhance the performance of lithium-ion battery anodes, this study leverages recycled diamond wire-cut silicon particles, a byproduct of the photovoltaic sector. These particles undergo purification through acid wash and pyrolysis to eliminate contaminants, thereby serving as potential anode materials . The inherent challenge with silicon involves its significant volumetric expansion during lithiation and delithiation , which hampers its viability for commercial applications. Addressing this, the research introduces a facile approach by synthesizing porous silicon (pSi) via the Ag-assisted chemical etching method. Subsequently, a distinctive yolk-shell porous silicon@void@carbon (pSi@V@C) structure is created using a sacrificial template approach, ensuring the formation of voids between the porous silicon core and the carbon shell. This configuration mitigates the detrimental effects of silicon's volume expansion while enhancing electrical conductivity through the carbon shell. The pSi@V@C composite exhibits promising electrochemical performance, demonstrated by an initial discharge capacity of 1826 mAh g -1 and a Coulombic efficiency of 68.6% at 0.1 A g -1 . Remarkably, it maintains a capacity of 821.8 mAh g -1 after 550 cycles at 1 A g -1 , with a retention rate of 90.4%.

We introduce a unique self-adaptive and dual-conductive binding network composed of (1) adjustable adhesion molecule of ion-conductive cyclodextrin (CD) and (2) rigid network consisting of electron-conductive polypyrrole (PPy) and ion-conductive lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (LCMC) for electrode formation. Such a binding network of CD@PPy:LCMC is constructed by association of LCMC with inclusion complex of CD@PPy after extending PPy by polymerization of pyrrole which is released from pyrrole micelles with the CD@PPy as the wall material. CD molecules can rotate around and slide along the PPy chain in the CD@PPy:LCMC, dispersing stress arising from volume expansion of Si after lithiation. The abundant carboxyl groups in CMC and hydroxyl groups in glucopyranose unit of CD and CMC provide high absorption capability to fix Si nano-particles. The Si anode with the CD@PPy:LCMC presents small polarization, high capacity, and excellent cycleability. The initial capacity as high as 3881 mAh g −1 , the rate capacity of 1208 mAh g −1 at 6 C (1 C=4200 mAh g −1 ), and the excellent capacity retention of 2200 mAh g −1 after 200 deep charge-discharge cycles with cyclic decay of 0.12 % per cycle have been achieved.

Commercial graphite anode has advantages such as low potential platform, high electronic conductivity, and abundant reserves. However, its theoretical capacity is only 372 mA h g−1. High-energy lithium-ion batteries have been a research hotspot. The Si anode has an extremely high specific capacity, but its application is hindered by defects such as large volume changes, poor electronic conductivity, and a small lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. Here, the Si/thermally reduced graphite oxide@carbon (Si/RGtO@C) composite was fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly followed by thermal treatment. The RGtO synergistic carbon coating layer can effectively compensate for the low electronic conductivity and buffer the volume expansion effect of the Si nanoparticles during charge/discharge cycles. The Si/RGtO@C anode demonstrated a significantly increased capacity compared to the RGtO. After 300 cycles, Si/RGtO@C kept a discharged capacity of 367.6 mA h g−1at a high current density of 1.0 A g−1. The Si/RGtO@C anode shows an application potential for commercial high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Graphical In this work, a mesoporous molecular sieve with graphite carbon-coated Co NPs (Co@CN/Al-MCM-41) was successfully synthesized by vacuum-injecting the precursor solution into the MCM-41 molecular sieve and subsequent calcination. Experimental results demonstrate that Co@CN/Al0.1-MCM-41 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogenation of FF. Its excellent catalytic performance is primarily attributed to the interaction between Co species and Al species of MCM-41, including the reduction effect, electron transfer, and enhancement of acid density. The catalytic hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) using metal-loaded mesoporous molecular sieves represents a significant research area. In this work, a mesoporous molecular sieve with graphite carbon-coated Co NPs (Co@CN/Al-MCM-41) was successfully synthesized by vacuum-injecting the precursor solution into the MCM-41 molecular sieve and subsequent calcination. Using Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41 as the catalyst, the selective hydrogenation of FF to FOL achieved a conversion rate of 91.2% under mild conditions at 120 °C, which is 2.85 times higher than that of Al-free Co@CN/MCM-41, with an FOL selectivity of 97.2%. The experimental results revealed a strong correlation between FF conversion and the Si/Al ratio of MCM-41 molecular sieve. Increasing the Al species content facilitated the formation of more Co NPs active sites because of the strong electrostatic interaction, thereby promoting the activation of FF and hydrogen and enhancing the catalytic activity of Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41. Additionally, Co@CN/Al 0.1 -MCM-41also exhibited stable performance over five consecutive cycles, which was attributed to the formation of graphite carbon-coated Co NPs structure during the synthesis process. This simple fabrication strategy provides a novel approach for the modification of mesoporous molecular sieves with excellent catalytic activities.

Si, as the most promising anode with high theoretical capacity for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), is hampered in commercial application by its poor electrical conductivity and significant volume expansion. Herein, the core-shell Si@SiO x /C@C-Ar (SSC-A) or Si@SiO x /C@C-H 2 /Ar (SSC-H) composites are purposefully designed by in situ introduction of inorganic SiO x in pure Ar or H 2 /Ar atmosphere to realize a Si-based anode for LIBs. By introducing different atmospheres, the valence states of SiO x are regulated. The inorganic transition layer formed by the combination of SiO x with higher average valence and asphalt-derived carbon demonstrates better performance in both stabilizing the core-shell structure and inhibiting the agglomeration of Si particles. Given these advantages, the SSC-A electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance (1163 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 1 A g −1 ), and the commercial blended graphite-SSC-A electrode reaches a specific capacity of 442 mAh g −1 with 74.8% capacity retention under the same conditions. Even the SSC-A electrode without Super P maintains an ultrahigh discharge specific capacity of 803 mAh g −1 with 60.6% after cycling. Importantly, the full batteries based on SSC-A without Super P achieve a discharge specific capacity of 126 mAh g −1 with 28.2% capacity decay after 200 cycles, demonstrating the superior commercial application potential.

The improvement of mechanical properties and flame retardant performance of epoxy resin (EP) composites has long been a significant technical challenge. In this paper, using P/N synergistic flame retardation, a multicomponent flame retardant (DKD) containing imine bonds and silicon was developed by introducing imine bond structures and silicon elements. DKD brings excellent flame retardant properties to EP. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of just 5 wt% DKD enabled EP composites to attain a 29.7 % LOI and a UL-94 V-0 rating. Due to the introduction of large benzene rings and Si– O –Si cross-linking structures, DKD-3/EP's impact strength and DKD-7/EP's flexural strength increased by 15.6 % and 25 %, respectively, versus pure EP. In the CCT test, pure EP achieved a PHRR of 1075.0 kW/m 2 and a THR of 133.4 MJ/m 2 . The PHRR and THR of DKD-7/EP are 649.2 kW/m 2 and 81.1 MJ/m 2 respectively, which are 39.6 % and 39.2 % lower than the pure EP values. In addition, the TSP and SPR of DKD-7/EP decreased by 31.7 % and 24.2 %, respectively. Compared with pure EP, the CO and CO 2 production rates were reduced by 46.6 % and 50.0 %, respectively. Through the study on the flame retardant mechanism of DKD/EP, it was found that the addition of DKD generates dual flame-retardant effects in both the condensed and gas phases, thereby enhancing the fire safety of the EP system.

Silicon anodes have been extensively researched due to their high capacity and potential to revolutionize energy storage. However, during lithiation and delithiation cycles, the volume expansion of silicon anodes can lead to mechanical damage and significant capacity decay. To address this issue, three-dimensional polymer binders have been introduced to suppress volume changes by providing mechanical support. Although cross-linking in these binders improves their robustness, current options with high molecular weights and cross-linked structures are not biodegradable. To provide an environmentally friendly solution, we propose grafting degradable starch microspheres (DSM) with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and cross-linking with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form DSM-g-PAA-c-PEG, a binder that demonstrates strong adhesive properties and superior mechanical strength compared to PAA. The UV-Visible spectrum confirms DSM’s continued degradability. After cycling the Si@DSM-g-PAA-c-PEG anode 100 times at 0.25 C, it achieves a capacity retention rate of 58.1 % with a reversible capacity of 2127.8 mAh g −1 . This work provides new insight into the engineering of next-generation silicon electrode using an environmentally-friendly binding strategy, which may advance the large-scale industrial application of lithium-ion batteries.

This study fabricated single-layer antireflective coatings (ARCs) employing a Si-Ti modified hollow silica nanoparticle (HSN) sol with self-cleaning function via in situ polymerization. Both shell-like and chain-like SiO₂–TiO₂ composites were directly synthesized in an alkali-catalyzed hollow SiO₂ sol through acid catalysis, which endowed the coating with suitable hardness while maintaining higher transmittance, thereby improving its overall performance. The influence of varying Si-Ti precursor doping ratios on the surface morphology, structure, optical performance, mechanical strength, and wettability of the coatings was investigated. The resulting coatings exhibited superhydrophilic properties, with a minimum water contact angle (WCA) below 5°. At an optimal doping concentration of 15 wt%, the coating achieved a hardness of 3 H and a solar-weighted transmittance (T sw ) exceeding 95.49 % across the wavelength range of 380–1100 nm, markedly surpassing that of the K9 glass (T sw = 91.70 %). At this doping level, the self-cleaning capability, antifogging performance, and environmental durability of the coating were further analyzed. The coating reached a self-cleaning efficiency of 95.93 % and a slight decrease of 0.03 % in T sw . After steam condensation experiment (sample placed above deionized water at 90 ℃ for 1 min), the haze value remained below 2 %. After 30 days of damp testing (80 % RH at 25 ℃), the reduction in T sw was only 0.07 %. After 100 thermal cycles (−20 ℃/30 %RH ↔ 100 ℃/30 %RH, each condition held for 30 min), T sw decreased by 0.3 %.
