SnO 2 is considered as an ideal substitute for graphite anode in lithium ion batteries since it has a four-fold theoretical capacity and low discharge potential. However, the poor transformation from Sn/Li 2 O to SnO 2 due to sluggish kinetic results in a low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of only 52.4%. At the same time, the intrinsically low ionic/electronic conductivity and high volume swings during charge/discharge processes seriously limit its long-term stability and high-rate performance. Different from traditional strategies, nanotechnology and composite, this work prepares sub-10 nm SnO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 /graphene nanosheets with controllable Fe/Sn atomic ratios through a hydrothermal method to study the nanocatalytic effect of Fe on improving the ICE. The component, structure and lithium storage performance of the samples, with varied Sn/Fe ratios, are systematically investigated. The sample with Sn/Fe of 1.31 shows a high ICE of 70.9% (considering the negative effect of huge solid/electrolyte interface films, this value is quite high) and an outstanding reversible capacity of 1048 mA h g −1 after 800 cycles at the current density of 200 mA g −1 . The valence states of Sn and Fe before and after cycling are analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our findings offer new evidence for electrochemical catalytic conversion mechanism for lithium storage and highlight opportunities to boost the energy storage capability of the fourth main group compounds.

Preparation of highly efficient and inexpensive electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of significant importance in the development of water splitting for hydrogen production . Ternary IrO 2 -Sb 2 O 5 -SnO 2 and cobalt-based oxides have been suggested to be high stability and low cost electrocatalysts for OER in acid and basic aqueous solution, respectively. Herein, we develop a serial of Ti/CoO x -IrO 2 -Sb 2 O 5 -SnO 2 anodes by a simple thermal treatment of mixed metal chlorides on Ti substrate. It is found that the partial-substitution iridium by cobalt in Ti/Ir 0.1 Sb 0.1 Sn 0.8 O x (Ti/C 0 ISS) anode shows an improved OER activity in acid and basic solution. For a Ti/Ir 0.05 Co 0.05 Sb 0.1 Sn 0.8 O x (Ti/C 5 ISS) anode, small overpotentials of 0.438 and 0.498 V are needed under the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M KOH, respectively. These values are remarkably lower than those of Ti/C 0 ISS electrode and comparable to other nanometer metal oxides catalysts. Additionally, it exhibits a low Tafel slope of 55 mV dec −1 and displays excellent electrocatalytic durability for OER in alkaline solution under a high current density . These advantages indicate Ti/C 5 ISS is a promising anode for water oxidation under high current densities.

The glass samples were prepared by the traditional melting method with red mud as the main raw material. The effect of SnO 2 content on the structure, crystallization behavior and corrosion resistance of the glass was studied by FTIR, XRD , and SEM. The results showed that the incorporation of SnO 2 increased the crystallization tendency of the glass. With the content of SnO 2 up to 1.96 wt%, some crystals precipitated in the glass. FTIR spectroscopy indicated that the vibration of the [SiO 4 ] group first shifted to the low wave number as the SnO 2 content increased to 0.99 wt%, and then moved to the high wave number with the SnO 2 content further increasing. With the SnO 2 content increasing, the alkali resistance of the glass was increased. When the content of SnO 2 was 1.48 wt% and 1.96 wt%, the mass loss of the glass in alkaline solution was 1.12% and 1.04% respectively. The water resistance of the glass was first reduced, then gradually increased after the SnO 2 content exceeded 0.99 wt%.

Ultrafine SnO 2 /Sn nanoparticles encapsulated into the adjustable mesoporous carbon matrix has been successfully fabricated by a facile route. The mesoporous carbon effectively improve the conductivity of the SnO 2 /Sn, prevent the aggregation, accommodate the strain of volume change and provide high interface area with the electrolyte, thus resulting in excellent cycling performance. A reversible capacity of 1105 mAh g –1 still retained after 290 cycles at 200 mA g –1 , and the capacity still can keep at 107 mAh g –1 at high current density of 10 A g –1 . The porous structures by the in situ SiO x template provide an appropriate specific surface area, which contributes to a relatively high capacitive contribution.

In this paper, three kinds of SnO 2 precursors were comparatively investigated for low temperature solution-processed SnO 2 films as electron transport layers (ETL) of CsPbBr 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It was found that the precursor state and solvent type played an important role on the crystallinity and film-forming performance of SnO 2 . All-inorganic hole-transport-layer-free planar CsPbBr 3 PSCs with an architecture of FTO/SnO 2 /CsPbBr 3 /carbon were fabricated. The best-performing device with SnO 2 as ETL by reflux condensation sol spin-coating technique delivered a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 6.27%, with a short-circuit current density of 7.36 mA cm − 2 , an open-circuit voltage of 1.29 V, and a fill factor of 65.9%. It was comparable to the highest PCE record 6.7% of the device with the same structure based on TiO 2 -ETL so far. Moreover, the CsPbBr 3 devices without encapsulation exhibited good stability after being stored under ambient conditions with a relative humidity of ∼ 4 0 % at room temperature over 1000 h and 60 ∘ C for 720 h, respectively. The results promise the commercial potential of CsPbBr 3 PSCs using reflux condensation low-temperature solution-processed SnO 2 as ETLs for flexible polymer photovoltaic applications.

SnO₂@CoFe-LDH heterostructure is designed for water dissociation in bipolar membranes. • Heterointerface promotes charge redistribution and enhances water molecule activation. • BPM with SnO₂@CoFe-LDH achieves a low voltage of 0.75 V at 100 mA cm −2 . • Ultralow water dissociation resistance of 0.12 Ω is attained. • DFT calculations reveal reduced activation energy due to interfacial synergy. Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are important components in electrochemical energy-conversion systems, but their performance is often limited by slow interfacial water dissociation (WD). Herein, a heterostructured SnO 2 @CoFe layered double hydroxide (SnO 2 @CoFe-LDH) catalyst was designed as an efficient interfacial layer to accelerate WD in BPMs. SnO 2 nanoparticles uniformly anchored on CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) nanosheets form a robust heterointerface that promotes interfacial charge redistribution and enhances water-molecule activation. Owing to this synergistic heterostructure, the resulting BPM delivers a low transmembrane voltage of 0.75 V at 100 mA cm −2 and an ultralow WD resistance of 0.12 Ω, together with stable operation for 72 h at 50 mA cm −2 . Efficient acid-base generation with high current efficiency and low energy consumption is further achieved in bipolar membrane electrodialysis. This work highlights heterointerface engineering as an effective strategy for developing high-performance BPM interfacial catalysts. With the continued expansion of the ammonia industry, electrochemically decomposing ammonia to generate hydrogen-rich gas streams for use in NH 3 -H 2 mixed fuel systems has become an important pathway for efficient ammonia resource utilization and green hydrogen production. A self-supported SnO 2 -Cu 2 O nanosheet electrode on nickel foam was developed as an efficient, stable, non-precious-metal anode for the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), enabling ammonia-assisted hydrogen production. The interconnected 3D nanosheet network offers good electrolyte penetration and gas release, while interfacial electronic interaction between SnO 2 and Cu 2 O induces charge redistribution that shifts the d-band center upward, lowering the *NH→*N dehydrogenation barrier to just 0.16 eV. This electronic regulation accelerates AOR kinetics, allowing the electrode to reach 50 mA cm −2 at only 1.46 V (vs. RHE) with over 60 h of stable operation. The catalyst also maintains high N 2 selectivity while suppressing NO x byproduct formation. Combined experimental and DFT analyses confirm that interface engineering between the two oxides is key to improving nitrogen intermediate evolution and overall catalytic performance. This work offers a practical strategy for designing durable, non-precious-metal AOR anodes, advancing electrochemical ammonia conversion technologies relevant to hydrogen generation from NH 3 -H 2 fuel systems.

Exhaled human breath contains disease-related biomarkers, enabling non-invasive medical diagnostics. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is traditionally diagnosed through hydrogen measurement, a method that offers limited specificity and sensitivity. Herein, we introduce a simplified Pt/Pd-SnO2 electronic composed of using only two sensing materials to achieve multi-gas detection. By simultaneously monitoring H2, CO, ethanol, and acetone, the system provides a more informative diagnostic profile than conventional single-marker tests. Furthermore, the electronic nose employs dual operating temperatures (135 and 190 °C) to enhance gas discrimination. Machine learning-assisted signal processing further optimizes the system’s ability to differentiate gases, enabling more accurate detection in clinical settings. It achieves a 93% classification accuracy and a mean squared error of 0.78 for gas concentration estimation. Importantly, the system was validated using real clinical breath samples collected after lactulose ingestion, where SIBO patients exhibited markedly elevated responses (7.62−18.77) compared to healthy individuals (2.45−4.91). This clinically validated, multi-gas platform offers improved accuracy and practical potential for SIBO diagnosis.

The development of high-performance hydrogen sensors operating at low-temperature is imperative for the large-scale application of green hydrogen energy and for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases through the detection of H 2 biomarkers in exhaled breath. However, conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors often suffer from insufficient response and sluggish kinetics under low-temperature operating conditions. In this work, bimetallic-enhanced hierarchical flower-like SnO 2 was synthesized via solvothermal and impregnation. Through systematic comparison among different bimetallic systems, the PdPt/SnO 2 sensor demonstrated optimal performance, exhibiting a response of 26.78 toward 250 ppm H 2 at 80°C, along with rapid response/recovery kinetics (5 s/125 s). Furthermore, theoretical calculations were performed to study the impact of Au/Ag/Pd/Pt on the adsorption characteristics and electronic behavior of oxygen and hydrogen on the SnO 2 surface. Hydrogen breath tests demonstrated the ability of the sensor to detect exhaled hydrogen, thereby highlighting its potential for diagnosing lactose intolerance and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

To address the insufficient broadband coverage of conventional microwave absorbing materials, a high-performance absorber is developed through a synergistic strategy integrating microscopic component regulation and macroscopic structural design. Sn particles are uniformly anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a charge mediator, constructing pod-like bionic micro-absorbing units. Subsequent heat treatment under an inert atmosphere induces the in-situ formation of a GO@Sn/SnO 2 multi-heterolayer structure. The optimized SG-3 sample exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −59.22 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.49 GHz. To overcome the bandwidth limits of planar absorbers, a turtle shell-inspired metamaterial superstructure was designed to strengthen multi-reflection and structural resonance. Combining the optimized material with this bio-inspired structure, the composite absorber breaks the bandwidth constraints of the Planck-Rozanov limit and realizes 16 GHz broadband absorption in 2-18 GHz. At r1 = r2 = 6 mm, h1 = 8 mm, h2 = 12 mm, the absorber exhibits a 14.56 GHz effective bandwidth with strong absorption peaks in the S, C, X, and Ku bands, and a maximum reflection loss of −52.88 dB. This work provides a feasible strategy for high-performance broadband microwave absorbers.

A highly conductive, transparent conducting electrode (TCE) based on Ba and Sb codoped tin oxide (BATO) has been successfully spray-deposited for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications, offering a promising alternative to conventional fluorine-doped tin oxide/indium tin oxide (FTO/ITO) electrodes. ATO is one of the most extensively studied TCE materials. However, its commercialization remains limited due to suboptimal electrical conductivity and optical transparency. The present research focuses on enhancing these properties by introducing Ba as a codopant in ATO thin films. Barium codopant effectively decreases the grayish color and helps optimize oxygen-vacancy density, which enhances electrical conductivity in ATO thin film. The spray-deposited large-area (10 × 10 cm2) BATO thin film exhibits an enhanced optical transmittance of 86%, a low resistivity of 4.605 × 10–4 Ω·cm, and a minimum sheet resistance of 13.7 Ω/□ significantly outperforming the corresponding ATO film. Importantly, the suitability of BATO and ATO electrodes was evaluated in DSSC devices, and the obtained results were compared to those of DSSCs employing commercial FTO electrodes. A power conversion efficiency (η) of 3.27% was recorded for the DSSC employing the BATO electrode, outperforming the ATO-based counterpart, which exhibited an efficiency of 2.39%. Interestingly, the alternative BATO electrode significantly reduces the reliance on indium-based TCOs and mitigates the optimization challenges associated with FTO electrodes, thereby contributing to a more cost-effective fabrication of DSSC solar cell devices.

Tin oxide has emerged as a promising electron transport material in perovskite solar cells due to its high conductivity and photostability. However, the inherent defects in SnO 2 nanoparticles and their imperfect bonding with perovskite at the interface lead to additional energy loss. To achieve bifacial passivation on the SnO 2 electron transporting layer and the SnO 2 /perovskite interface synchronously, a multifunctional surface modulation strategy has been developed by incorporating O-phospho-L-serine monolithium salt (PS-Li) to regulate the SnO 2 nanoparticles. PS-Li coordinates with SnO 2 through the phosphate/carboxyl groups, with the exposed amino group passivating the uncoordinated lead ions at the interface. The introduction of a lithium ion further regulates the energy band of SnO 2 , accelerating electron extraction and transport. This multifunctional modulation reduces trap states from tin dangling bonds and oxygen vacancies, enhancing film conductivity. It also regulates the growth of the perovskite crystal and reduces nonradiative recombination at the interface. Consequently, the optimized perovskite solar cells achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.91% for small-area devices and 23.14% for mini-modules (aperture area of 30 cm 2 ). The unencapsulated device retains 91% and 89% of its initial PCE after enduring 1000 h under ambient conditions, and 500 h under 1 sun illumination in N 2 atmosphere, respectively.
