Effective photocatalytic removal of As(III) by ZnFe2O4/Ag/AgCl coupled peroxymonosulfate: Z-Scheme charge transfer and dual active sites

Dashi Lei,Juanqin Xue,Xiangyu Peng,Shuhao Li,Qiang Bi,Changbin Tang,Liang Zhang,Jing Zhang

Inorganic arsenic threatens human health due to its high mobility and toxicity. In this work, rapid and effective treatment of As(III) wastewater was achieved by Z-Scheme photocatalyst (ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/AgCl). By means of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, 50 mg/L As(III) was completely removed within 20 min under light irradiation. During photocatalytic system, free radicals ( SO 4 − , OH, O 2 − ) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 ) were responsible for As(III) removal. The fast PMS activation was attributed to the loop conversion of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Ag 0 /Ag + . Besides, density functional theory (DFT) calculations exhibited that Fe atoms were active sites for As(III) adsorption and Ag nanoparticles were spots for PMS activation. Specially, the dual active sites on photocatalyst could effectively minimize the distance between oxidizing product with arsenite molecular and thus facilitate As(III) fast oxidation.

The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ag-Fe2O3-TiO2 performed in Z-scheme route associated with localized surface plasmon resonance effect

Qiong Sun,Peng Hou,Songhao Wu,Liyan Yu,Lifeng Dong

A Z-scheme mechanism associated with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is proposed and proved in a ternary Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 composite for photocatalytic reactions. The Ag, Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 nanoparticles are prepared to exist in a closely connected Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 heterostructure . Compared to TiO 2 , the addition of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 causes a broad absorption in visible region by LSPR effect of Ag to facilitate electron transfer from TiO 2 to Ag. In addition, electron migration from TiO 2 to Fe 2 O 3 can also be detected, indicating the interface between TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 can offer a route with low resistance for charge separation and directional transfer. As a result, photocatalytic activities are greatly improved in Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 , with the highest calculated apparent kinetic constant located at 0.027 min −1 , which is 7.3, 1.9, 1.7 and 1.5 times of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Ag-TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 , respectively. Free radical quenching experiments show that O 2 -∙ and positively charged holes are main oxidative species responsible for the degradation of dyes. Specifically, OH∙ radicals can be hardly found in pure TiO 2 under irradiation but can be extensively produced and participate in the degradation after the addition of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 , which further proves that a Z-scheme route dominates the electron transfer between TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 .

Rational design of Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/Ag@Ag2CO3 hybrid with enhanced photocatalytic activity, stability and recovery performance for tetracycline degradation

Ping Wei,Shiheng Yin,Tao Zhou,Chao Peng,Xiaolong Xu,Juncai Lu,Minchao Liu,Jianbo Jia,Kun Zhang

The occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the ambient environment has raised serious concerns. Herein, a dispersed ZnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticle loaded Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 nanorod hybrid (ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 ) was facile prepared, and used as a solar light driven photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC), a typical   PPCPs. The hybrids were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, HRTEM, DRS, PL, TRPL, M−H , BET, XPS, ESR and photoelectrochemical testing. The ZnFe 2 O 4 was evenly dispersed on the surface of Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 nanorods of which diameter was about 100 nm. The obtained ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 composites exhibited high TC degradation efficiency after 150 min Xe light illumination, which was much better than those of pure Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 and ZnFe 2 O 4 . The photodegradation reaction rate constant ( k ) of the optimum ternary photocatalyst (ZnFe 2 O 4 loading 5% wt) increased 4.04 times and 2.48 times than those of pure ZnFe 2 O 4 and Ag 2 CO 3 @Ag, respectively. More importantly, the stability and recovery capacity of the ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 photocatalyst improved obviously than those of Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 . The reactive oxygen species (ROS) experiment indicated that • OH、h + and • O 2 − involved in the photocatalytic reaction process, and the ROS contributes order was • O 2 − > h + > • OH. The band positions of individual ZnFe 2 O 4 and Ag 2 CO 3 were elucidated via DRUV–Vis spectra and Mott-Schottky plots. Based on the results of ROS experiment and band structure of ZnFe 2 O 4 and Ag 2 CO 3 , it could be inferred that the photocatalytic reaction of ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 abided by Z-scheme mechanism, that is, Ag acted as the electronic bridge between Ag 2 CO 3 and ZnFe 2 O 4 , and the • OH and • O 2 − were formed on the valence band (VB) of Ag 2 CO 3 and conduction band (CB) of ZnFe 2 O 4 , respectively, and then TC was further oxidized. The sufficient photocatalytic degradation of TC in ambient water revealed that a sunlight-driven ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag@Ag 2 CO 3 photocatalytic process may be efficiently applied for the remediation of PPCPs contaminated natural waters.

Hierarchical construction of a new Z-scheme Bi/BiVO4-CdS heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Yongtao Xue,Zengyue Chen,Zhansheng Wu,Fei Tian,Bing Yu

Developing cost-effective photocatalysts with efficient electron hole separation efficiency and excellent light absorption performance for the remediation of organic pollutants from wastewater is highly desirable. Herein, a new Z-Scheme Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS heterojunction with leaf-like morphology has been successfully fabricated for the first time and its application as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has been explored. Compared with BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , the as-prepared Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS exhibits improved light absorption capacity and electron-hole separation efficiency, and it has a superior performance of photocatalytic degradation of TCH. The degradation ratio of TCH by Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis reaches 85.5% within 30 min. The rate constant of TCH degradation for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS is 1.32 and 1.18 times of the BiVO 4 and Bi/BiVO 4 , respectively. In addition, Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS displays a high stability without obvious decay for its TCH degradation efficiency (<5%) during four recycles. The ESR characterization and reactive species trapping experiments indicates that the generated h + , •O 2 – , and •OH from Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalysis are responsible for TCH degradation. Since several intermediates are identified by HPLC-MS, the pathways for Bi/BiVO 4 -CdS based photocatalytic degradation of TCH are proposed.

Effect of Sb doping on the photocatalytic performance of Z-scheme TiO2NRA/SnO2/potassium titanate heterojunction and its photocatalytic mechanism

Yiyin Guan,Wenjie Liu,Shixiang Zuo,Xiangyu Yan,Jingyi Ni,Chao Yao,Fengqin Wu

Firstly, Sb–SnO 2 /potassium titanate (Sb–SnO 2 /K 4 TiO 4 (KTO)) was fabricated by a sol-gel method, and then TiO 2 nanorod arrays were grown on the surface of Sb–SnO 2 /KTO by a hydrothermal method (TiO 2 NRA/Sb–SnO 2 /KTO). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectrometer (UV–Vis), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic characterizations (XPS). The results show that the Z-scheme heterojunction formed between SnO 2 /KTO and TiO 2 can enhance the range of light response. With the doping of Sb, the conductivity of the composite is enhanced, which is advantageous to the transfer of electron and the low recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Thus, the doping of Sb is effective to improve the photocatalytic performance. Our work demonstrates the optimal doping amount of Sb is 5%. The degradation efficiency of TCH concentration can reach 95.6% after 2 h and TiO 2 NRA/Sb–SnO 2 /KTO shows good reusability .

Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Ligand-Free FAPbBr3/α-Fe2O3 for Boosting Photocatalysis of CO2 Reduction Coupled with Water Oxidation

Yan-Fei Mu,Chao Zhang,Meng-Ran Zhang,Wen Zhang,Min Zhang,Tong-Bu Lu

Up to now, the majority of the developed photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems need to use expensive sacrificial reductants as electron source. It is still a huge challenge to drive the photocatalytic CO2 reduction using water as an electron source. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the construction of direct Z-scheme heterojunction of LF-FAPbBr3/α-Fe2O3, which is manufactured by the in situ and two-step controlled growth of ligand-free formamidinium lead bromide (LF-FAPbBr3) nanocrystals on the surface of α-Fe2O3 nanorods. The matchable energy levels and direct contact between LF-FAPbBr3 and α-Fe2O3 significantly accelerate the interfacial charge transfer, with a charge separation efficiency (ηseparation) of 93%, much higher than that of 11% shown by the ligand-capped FAPbBr3/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction. The resulting efficient separation and raised redox ability of photogenerated carriers endow the LF-FAPbBr3/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction with an outstanding photocatalytic performance for CO2 reduction (to CO and CH4) coupled with water oxidation (to O2), achieving a highest electron consumption rate of 175.0 μmol g–1 h–1 among the reported metal halide perovskite-based photocatalysts, which are 5 and 11 times higher in comparison with those of sole LF-FAPbBr3 and ligand-capped FAPbBr3/α-Fe2O3, respectively.

Facile construction of Z-scheme AgCl/Ag-doped-ZIF-8 heterojunction with narrow band gaps for efficient visible-light photocatalysis

Na Chang,Yan-Ru Chen,Feng Xie,Ya-Pan Liu,Hai-Tao Wang

It is of great importance to fabricate photocatalyst with high photocatalytic activity, and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst has been proved to be an effective way to restrain the recombination of photo-induced carriers. In this work, Z-scheme AgCl/Ag-doped-ZIF-8 heterojunction is synthesized via a two-step process involving appropriate amount of cationic Ag ion doping into the imidazole ring of ZIF-8 framework and the precipitation of AgCl onto this Ag-doped-ZIF-8. The successful doping of ZIF-8 which decreases the band gap energy, enhances the light harvesting. Besides, the separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers is further improved due to the formation of Z-scheme AgCl/Ag-doped-ZIF-8 heterojunction, which is confirmed by photoelectrochemical experiments. As a result, the as-prepared AgCl/Ag-doped-ZIF-8 photocatalyst possesses excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination. This work will provide a novel perspective for the design and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalysis.

Fabrication of Z-Scheme Heterojunction g-C3N4/Yb3+-Bi5O7I Photocatalysts with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance under Visible Irradiation for Hg0 Removal

Min Zhou,Jiang Wu,Huaning Wang,Dayong Guan,Xinfeng Dong,Jianmin Wang,Tao Jia,Qizhen Liu

Constructing a heterojunction and designing a band gap are effective methods to promote the efficiency of a photocatalyst and solar energy utilization. In this work, g-C3N4/Yb3+-Bi5O7I nanostructured photocatalysts were successfully prepared using a hydrothermal method with glycol as a solvent and a calcination method, and the performance of the photocatalysts containing different amounts of g-C3N4 was studied. A series of characterizations confirmed the successful complexation of g-C3N4 nanosheets with Bi5O7I, and Yb3+ was successfully doped into the lattice of Bi5O7I. g-C3N4 and Yb3+ have a synergistic effect on expanding the photoresponse range of CYB(g-C3N4/Yb3+-Bi5O7I) composite photocatalysts. As expected, CYB samples have wonderful photocatalytic performance and stability in the removal of Hg0, among which CYB-20 has the highest removal efficiency, reaching 79%. Yb3+ with upconversion characteristics can convert infrared light into visible light and form new energy levels in Bi5O7I. g-C3N4 and Bi5O7I form a Z-scheme heterojunction to improve the photocatalytic performance of Bi5O7I. Besides, the electron and hole transmission paths and the catalytic mechanism of the photocatalysts are also proposed. This work offers a new approach to construct a photocatalyst system for pollutant emission control with a wide wavelength range of sunlight, which may be helpful to develop environmentally benign functional materials.

Dongbo Wang,Xin Yu,Qingge Feng,Xianhao Lin,Ying Huang,Xianqing Huang,Xiang Li,Kao Chen,Bohan Zhao,Zhao Zhang

In order to construct tighter heterostructures , a novel Z-scheme β-Bi 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 composite (xBC) was synthesized by in-situ growth method. The crystal phase, morphology, chemical composition, optical and photoelectrochemical properties of the composites were investigated by XRD , FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV–vis DRS , EIS , etc. The characterizations verified that β-Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets grew uniformly on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 . Meanwhile, the photocatalytic performance of xBC composites were also evaluated by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and p -Nitrophenol (PNP) under visible-light irradiation. As a result, 0.5BC exhibited the most superior performance, the removal efficiencies reached 71.6% for PNP in 300min and 94.8% for RhB in 120 min, with a rate constant (0.0233min −1 ) of 7.1 and 5.8 times than that of g-C 3 N 4 and β-Bi 2 O 3 , respectively. Evidences that Z-scheme carries transfer path were strongly confirmed by XPS, PL and reactive species analysis.

Hongjie Zhu,Lingxuan Gong,Zhihao Chen,Youyou Hu,Zhengkui Li

The Z-scheme photocatalyst is valuable for use in polluted water purification, and there is a need to develop a cheap and efficient photocatalyst. This study presents a new type of Z-scheme photocatalytic material composed of hematite and P3HT, also, the Al cluster oxides were first used as a charge transfer mediator to construct Z-scheme photocatalysis system. In addition, by analyzing the electron rearrangement phenomenon exhibited by the XPS spectrum and the experimental results of the in-situ illumination XPS, it is found that Al cluster is beneficial to the electron multi-step charge transfer process and Al cluster favors the construction of Z-scheme structure between hematite and P3HT. This Poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT)/Al cluster oxide/hematite ternary photocatalyst exhibited an excellent degradation effect on bisphenol A and tetracycline. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using the Al cluster as a charge mediator in the Z-scheme, providing new Z-scheme catalyst construction idea which is beneficial to the popularization and use of Z-scheme system in practical applications, and providing a new material for water pollution purification.

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production using an NH4TiOF3/TiO2/g-C3N4 composite with a 3D camellia-like Z-scheme heterojunction structure

Bo Lv,Lili Lu,Xuefan Feng,Xiaoping Wu,Xiaoming Wang,Xiong Zou,Fuqin Zhang

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising ways to realize artificial photosynthesis. The biologically inspired photocatalysts with 3D flower-like structures have attracted much attention. In this study, an effective method for the synthesis of composite photocatalytic material, NH 4 TiOF 3 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 , with a 3D camellia-like structure, was developed. The 3D hierarchical structure of the composite material enabled multiple refractions and reflections of light within the catalyst, which greatly improved the efficiency of the sunlight harvesting. The combination of NH 4 TiOF 3 and TiO 2 also effectively reduced the electron-hole recombination in the g-C 3 N 4 . To evaluate its photocatalytic performance, the prepared nanostructured composite materials were tested for the water-splitting with simulated sunlight. It showed the hydrogen evolution at the rate of 3.6 mmol/g/h, which is 4.0 times faster than that from the pure g-C 3 N 4 . The composite materials exhibited excellent cycling stability. The detailed mechanism of the Z-scheme heterojunction was also discussed. The proposed synthesis route for the creation of 3D flower-like hierarchical composites provides a new effective technique for developing efficient, active, and stable composite photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Construction of netlike 3D Z-scheme photoelectrodes with improved photocatalytic performance based on g-C3N4 nanosheets modified TiO2 nanobelt-tubes

Xiaohan Ma,Qinghua Chen,Guocheng Liu,Yuanming Zhou,Dong Ma,Shuaishuai Xin,Chengze Yu,Bin Zhang,Yanjun Xin

Netlike 3D Z-scheme graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets decorated TiO 2 nanobelt-tubes (TNBTs) photoelectrodes (g-C 3 N 4 /TNBTs) were fabricated via anodization and coating technology. The network 3D photoelectrodes were characterized by HR-TEM, XPS and UV–Vis/DRS. The photoelectrochemical properties were examined to reveal the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by the photocatalytic decomposition of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under light irradiation. Results showed that g-C 3 N 4 with rugged surface were loaded on TNBTs by chemical bond joint to form heterostructure. The g-C 3 N 4 /TNBTs exhibited stronger visible light absorption and reduced recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs than TNBTs. The photocurrent response of g-C 3 N 4 /TNBTs was ~1.88-fold that of TNBTs. The photocatalytic rate of g-C 3 N 4 /TNBTs for TC was significantly higher than that of TNBTs (0.017 min −1 vs 0.007 min −1 ). The O 2 − and h + were the dominant oxidation species during the degradation of TC. The possible photocatalytic mechanism of constructing Z-scheme heterojunction was also proposed.
