Under-coordinated selenide enriched amorphous cobalt selenide prepared under ambient conditions for highly efficient immobilization of gaseous elemental mercury

Hailong Li,Weizhen He,Wei Zheng,Zequn Yang,Yingchao Hu,Wenqi Qu

The limited adsorption capacity of commercialized sorbents towards elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) remains a major challenge facing their extensive applications under the regulation of the Minamata Convention. Metal selenides were recently found to be promising alternatives to commercialized sorbents for capturing Hg 0 from industrial flue gas due to the high affinity between Hg 0 and selenide. In metal selenides, under-coordinated selenide sites play critical roles in oxidation and subsequent immobilization of Hg 0 , while there is still no simple way to increase the abundance of under-coordinated selenide in metal selenides under ambient conditions. In this work, an effective and facile precipitation pathway was proposed to prepare amorphous cobalt selenide (a-CoSe 2 ) with under-coordinated selenide enriched surface under ambient conditions. The a-CoSe 2 as synthesized achieved outstanding Hg 0 uptake capacity and adsorption rate (534.2 mg g −1 and 483.1 μg g −1 min −1 ), far surpassing those of crystalline cobalt selenide (c-CoSe 2 ) by magnitudes. The characteristic results demonstrated that the under-coordinated selenide enriched nature of a-CoSe 2 is the principal reason causing the significant performance improvement, which is fully in line with our hypothesis and purpose. This work not only proposes a potential sorbent for efficient Hg 0 sequestration from industrial flue gas but also inspires the further development of synthesis strategies for amorphous materials.

A new hexamolybdate-based copper–2,2′-biimidazole coordination polymer serving as an acid catalyst and support for enzyme immobilization

Sang X.-J.,Feng S.-L.,Lu Y.,Zhang Y.-X.,Su F.,Zhang L.-C.,Zhu Z.-M.

The hydrothermal reaction of (NH4)3[CoMo6O24H6]·7H2O (CoMo6), CuCl2·2H2O and 2,2′-biimidazole (H2biim) led to the formation of a new coordination polymer, namely poly[diaquabis(2,2′-biimidazole)hexa-μ3-oxo-octa-μ2-oxo-hexaoxodicopper(II)hexamolybdate(VI)], [Cu2Mo6O20(C6H6N4)2(H2O)2]n (Cu-Mo6O20), at pH 2–3. It is obvious that in the formation of crystalline Cu-Mo6O20, the original Anderson-type skeleton of heteropolymolybdate CoMo6 was broken and the new isopolyhexamolybdate Mo6O20 unit was assembled. In Cu-Mo6O20, one Mo6O20 unit connects four [Cu(H2biim)(H2O)]2+ ions in a pentacoordinate mode via four terminal O atoms, resulting in a tetra-supported structure, and each CuII ion is shared by two adjacent Mo6O20 units. Infinite one-dimensional chains are established by linkage between two adjacent Mo6O20 units and two CuII ions, and these chains are further packed into a three-dimensional framework by hydrogen bonds, π–π interactions and electrostatic attractions. The catalytic performance of this crystalline material used as an efficient and reusable heterogeneous acid catalyst for carbonyl-group protection is discussed. In addition, Cu-Mo6O20 was applied as a new support for enzyme (horseradish peroxidase, HRP) immobilization, forming immobilized enzyme HRP/Cu-Mo6O20. HRP/Cu-Mo6O20 showed good catalytic activity and could be reused.

From Simplified Pretreatment to Sensitive Analysis: An Immobilization-Free Cathodic Photoelectrochemical Assay for Sulfonylurea Herbicide Residue and Its Accumulation

Kaidi Zhan,Yaxiling Wang,Jing Lin,Fengxu Chen,Xia Fan,Peiwen Hu,Jiangwen Wen,Fangduanyang Gong,Nan Zhang

Sensitive and selective detection of agricultural chemicals in complex matrices necessitates streamlined workflows without performance loss. By combining the inherent high sensitivity of photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis with the high selectivity of enzymatic recognition, an immobilization-free PEC assay for the sulfonylurea herbicide chlorsulfuron (Chs) was developed, with purification steps omitted and analytical procedure simplified. Specifically, BiOI nanoflakes (NFs)/NiO heterojunction was fabricated as a sensing platform, generating strong and stable cathodic photocurrent in the presence of dissolved O2. The catalytic reaction of acetolactate synthase (ALS) consumed O2, quenching the photocurrent response. Conversely, upon addition of the model target Chs, a representative sulfonylurea herbicide and effective inhibitor of ALS, the signal was recovered. By monitoring the photocurrent change before and after the enzymatic reaction, Chs was quantified over a linear range of 0.25–100 μg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 μg/L. The assay avoids laborious probe-immobilization steps by directly adding the enzyme into the electrolyte, significantly simplifying the detection protocol. Furthermore, by omitting traditional purification procedures, the overall workflow was further optimized. The method was successfully applied to detect Chs residues in wheat powder and to evaluate its accumulation in wheat seedlings, with accuracy and reliability validated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This work achieves highly sensitive and immobilization-free PEC analysis of Chs and offers a feasible approach for sulfonylurea herbicide detection in selected agricultural samples, with streamlined pretreatment process and enhanced analytical efficiency.

Tailoring the surface functionality of ukrainian kaolin via deep eutectic solvent immobilization: A potential hybrid material for dye adsorption

Victoria Vorobyova,Inna Trus,Margarita Skiba,Mykhaylo Byk,Georgii Vasyliev,Maksym Dudka,Antonina Bondarieva

A deep eutectic solvent-functionalized kaolin adsorbent was developed for the first time. • DES treatment reconstructed the kaolin surface and modified its pore architecture. • Surface functionalization altered polarity, zeta potential, and colloidal behavior of kaolin. • The hybrid adsorbent delivered 96–99% methylene blue removal from water. • Green metrics confirmed the sustainability of both DES synthesis and adsorbent preparation. A new deep eutectic solvent (DES)-modified kaolin-based adsorbent was synthesized for the first time as material for adsorption of organic pollutants. A ternary DES Choline chloride – Urea – Glycerol (1:1:1) was used to modify kaolin. Quantum-chemical calculations are applied to predict the properties of DES, particularly the reactivity of hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) and the nature of their hydrogen-bond interactions. The successful preparation of DES was confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 Н NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The physicochemical properties of DES, including electrical conductivity (0.273 mS·cm −1 ), surface tension (66.25 mN·m −1 ), pH (3.22), and polarity (205.9 kJ∙mol −1 ), were determined. The FTIR, low-temperature N 2 adsorption-desorption, particle size characterization via DLS, and zeta-potential analyses confirmed the successful DES functionalization of kaolin, resulting in surface restructuring, pore blocking, altered electrokinetic behavior, increased surface polarity, and formation of hydrated organo-mineral agglomerates. It has been established that modification of kaolin with DES contributes to increasing the efficiency of removal of the model dye MB from the aqueous medium, providing a removal efficiency of over 96–99%. The environmental friendliness of the developed sorbent modification and adsorption procedure was assessed using the AGREEprep and AGREE metrics. The sustainability of the synthesized DES was assessed using DES Ecoscale. Download: Download high-res image (241KB) Download: Download full-size image

Dual-alkali Modified Fly Ash for High-Performance Phosphate Adsorption: Synergistic Effects of Structural Activation and Calcium-Mediated Immobilization

Yu Yunhao,Xia Kangle,Zhou Zhongxiao,Zhao Lanlan,Sun Pengfei,Zhou Baocheng,Gong Yixuan,Dong Xiaoping

Excessive phosphate discharge into aquatic environments causes severe eutrophication, posing significant threats to ecological balance and human health. Adsorption is a promising technology for phosphate removal, and fly ash (FA), an industrial solid waste, has attracted attention as a low-cost adsorbent. However, raw FA suffers from low adsorption capacity and pH-dependent performance, limiting its practical application. In this study, a dual-alkali (NaOH and Ca(OH) 2 ) modified FA adsorbent (FA-NC) was developed to address these limitations. The synthesis parameters, including the alkali composition, total alkali dosage, and calcination temperature, were systematically optimized. The optimal FA-NC was prepared by mixing 5.0 g of fly ash with 7.0 g of NaOH and Ca(OH) 2 at a mass ratio of 1:1, followed by calcination at 600 °C for 2 h. An adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g L −1 was selected for the subsequent phosphate adsorption experiments. The physicochemical properties of FA-NC were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption techniques, and its phosphate adsorption performance was evaluated through batch and dynamic experiments. The results showed that under the standard batch condition (1.0 g L −1 FA-NC, 20.0 mg P L⁻ 1 , 240 min), phosphate removal exceeded 97% over an initial pH range of 2–12, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 33.0 mg·g −1 . The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. FA-NC also exhibited excellent selectivity against coexisting anions, good regenerability (removal efficiency > 82% after four cycles), and effective performance in dynamic adsorption, meeting the Class II water quality standard in China. Mechanistic studies revealed that phosphate removal by FA-NC was achieved through the synergistic effects of electrostatic attraction, surface precipitation, and anion exchange, with calcium sites playing a central role. These results demonstrate that the principal novelty of FA-NC lies in the integration of structural activation and calcium-mediated phosphate immobilization within a simple, rare-earth-free modification route, providing a potentially cost-competitive approach for fly ash valorization and phosphate removal.

Synthesis and mechanisms of synergistic quartz clustering in alkali-activated solid waste-based grouting materials for heavy metal immobilization

Yukun Cao,Qingping Wang,Zhiwei Cheng,Feifei Zhou,Bin Wang,Jingyi Cai,Xueqi Feng,Xiang Li,Xiujuan Feng,Liang Yuan

To address bottlenecks such as poor underwater performance and unclear heavy metal migration mechanisms in solid-waste-based grouting materials, this study developed a novel cement-free, all-solid-waste grouting system using coal gangue, fly ash, and silica fume. The research focused on investigating its underwater adaptability and heavy metal solidification mechanisms. Through multi-factor proportion optimization, the engineering performance of the slurry was systematically evaluated, and its underwater diffusion behavior was elucidated via numerical simulations. Microscopic characterization and theoretical calculations further revealed the structural evolution of heavy metals during solidification. The results indicated that an optimal formulation (40 wt% CG, 25 wt% FA, and 35 wt% SF with admixtures) achieves a synergistic balance between fluidity and anti-washout properties. Mechanistic studies confirmed that heavy metal stabilization is driven by a dual mechanism of "surface adsorption" and "network fixation": the quartz crystal surfaces exhibit a strong adsorption affinity for both heavy metal ions and silicon-oxygen units; simultaneously, the robust interactions among these silicon-oxygen units drive the formation of a dense aluminosilicate gel network, thereby synergistically enhancing the solidification effect. Computational results showed that the adsorption affinity of Se 4 + on the quartz (001) surface and 2Q 1 monomers is significantly higher than that of As 3+ , explaining the divergent solidification behaviors. Environmental and economic assessments demonstrate that this system offers substantial advantages in carbon mitigation and cost control, highlighting its promising potential for sustainable engineering applications.

Self-catalytic immobilization of choline-based ionic liquid on SiO2 and its application in transesterification for sec-butanol synthesis

Peixin Hong,Fengyue Yin,Rongkai Cui,Yongsheng Lin,Xiaoyan Chen,Ting Qiu,Jie Chen

Sec -butyl alcohol (SBA) is a crucial chemical intermediate and solvent in organic synthesis. The transesterification of sec -butyl acetate (SBAC) with methanol (MeOH) is a key SBA production process due to straightforward reaction conditions and raw materials easily available, but conventional catalysts suffer from high corrosivity and poor recyclability, increasing costs. Herein, we report a series of novel heterogeneous catalysts of TEOS-[Ch][Im]- x with differential loading amount of choline imidazolate ([Ch][Im]) supported on SiO 2 . [Ch][Im], for the first time, is employed not only as a basic catalyst to facilitate the formation of SiO 2 , but also as a catalytic moiety immobilized on the SiO 2 matrix via H-O hydrogen bonds, thus enabling the fabrication of efficient SiO 2 -based catalysts through a one-pot reaction. By optimization of catalytic conditions for optimal catalyst TEOS-[Ch][[Im]-12, over 50% SBAC conversion is achieved in 60 min, and the conversion rate reaches 61.58% under the reaction temperature of 67 ℃ , nMeOH: nSBAC = 8.8:1, and catalyst dosage 9 wt% conditions after response surface methodology (RSM) optimization. More importantly, the catalyst exhibits excellent reusability and cycling stability without any noticeable deactivation over five consecutive reaction cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( in situ DRIFTs) results further confirm that the functionalized [Im] − anions could activate methanol to form the key adsorbed CH 3 O* intermediate, which then undergoes a nucleophilic reaction with SBAC to yield SBA. This facile synthetic strategy thus endows the catalyst with considerable application potential for green catalytic transesterification processes.

Immobilization of Pb and Cd in red soil using Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar: mechanisms and plant uptake

Ma Chuang,Liu XueMei

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil threaten agroecosystem safety and human health. Due to the high bioavailability and mobility of heavy metals in red soil, the risk is further increased. Biochar is widely used for heavy metal immobilization, but original biochar suffers from inherent limitations. Most existing studies of iron (Fe)–manganese (Mn) modified biochar have not focused on red soil, and the relationship with soil–plant responses remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of sugarcane bagasse biochar (BC) and Fe–Mn modified sugarcane bagasse biochar (FMBC) for Pb and Cd immobilization in red soil, and clarify their effect on plant uptake. BC and FMBC were applied to Pb and Cd contaminated red soil for pot experiments with pak choi ( Brassica rapa chinensis ) as an indicator plant. The results showed that both BC and FMBC elevated soil pH, organic matter (SOM), enzyme activities, reduced Pb and Cd bioavailability, and transformed Pb and Cd to stable fractions. FMBC outperformed BC, and the 5% FMBC treatment achieved the optimal remediation efficacy. The 5% FMBC decreased the acid-extractable Pb and Cd by 9.33 and 34.40% compared to control. The plant biomass was significantly increased, Pb and Cd content in edible shoots met the limit standards, and bioconcentration (BCF) and translocation factors (TF) were lowered. Overall, this study establishes theoretical foundations and empirical bases for the application of FMBC to immobilize Pb and Cd in red soils, thereby providing a feasible and eco-friendly approach to support sustainable agriculture and the recycling of agricultural waste.

Effect of Na2O on the crystallization behavior, structure, and chromium immobilization in CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–Cr2O3 glass–ceramics

Leibo Deng,Tianyi Li,Yahui Zhou,Wenjing Zhang

The harmless treatment of Cr-containing solid waste remains a critical environmental challenge. Herein, Cr 2 O 3 -doped CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 glass-ceramics with varying Na 2 O contents were prepared via a melting method. The study focuses on how Na 2 O regulates the glass network, crystallization behavior, and Cr immobilization efficiency. With increasing Na 2 O content, the degree of depolymerization (DOD) of the parent glass increases from 1.76 to 1.99, while the crystallization activation energy decreases accordingly. The optimal formulation is achieved at 1 wt% Na 2 O combined with a two-stage heat treatment (nucleation at 720 °C for 2 h, followed by crystallization at 850 °C for 2 h). Under these conditions, the glass-ceramic exhibits the lowest Cr leaching concentration of 0.031 mg/L, far below the regulatory limit of 5 mg/L. The dominant crystalline phases are diopside and a spinel solid solution, where Cr 3+ is stably incorporated into the spinel. These findings demonstrate that controlled Na 2 O addition provides an effective compositional lever for optimizing both crystallization kinetics and heavy metal immobilization, offering a sustainable pathway for valorizing Cr-containing wastes into high-performance glass-ceramics.

Oriented Immobilization Coupled With Ligand Fishing Strategy for Rapid Discovery of Direct HMGB1 Inhibitors in Taxus wallichiana var. mairei.

Xinlin Chen,Junxi Liu,Liping Qu,Feifei Wang

High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1), a non-histone chromatin protein, is a key inflammatory cytokine. Direct HMGB1 inhibitors have gained attention for their therapeutic potential in age-related diseases by blocking the pro-inflammatory activity of extracellular HMGB1, but remain limited. Here, an immobilized HMGB1 was synthesized in one step using an oriented immobilization approach and applied to efficiently acquire direct HMGB1 inhibitors from a highly complex matrix. The oriented immobilization method employed a Ni 2 + -modified metal–organic framework combined with cell lysate containing engineered His-tagged HMGB1, bypassing the need for pre-purified proteins. The resulting immobilized HMGB1 demonstrated high protein loading capacity (110.2 mg/g) while retaining its cytokine activity. The immobilized HMGB1 was employed to rapidly identify its direct inhibitors from the Taxus wallichiana var. mairei twig. The application of this immobilized HMGB1 enabled efficient capture of 11 HMGB1 ligands from this plant. Among the 11 ligands, seven compounds were structurally characterized by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. Among these compounds, sciadopitysin was selected due to its higher HMGB1 inhibitory activity and predicted binding affinity to HMGB1. Through fluorescence quenching and surface plasmon resonance analyses, sciadopitysin was experimentally validated, where the surface plasmon resonance data demonstrated direct binding to HMGB1 with a dissociation constant (K d ) of 2.77 × 10 −4 M, and the observed intrinsic fluorescence quenching provided additional evidence of the ligand–protein interaction. Furthermore, validation in RAW264.7 macrophages demonstrated its dose-dependent suppression of HMGB1-stimulated inflammation (IC 50 = 27.25 ± 3.31 µM). Collectively, a highly efficient ligand fishing strategy for identifying direct HMGB1 inhibitors was established. Moreover, our findings illustrated the correlation between Taxus wallichiana var. mairei and HMGB1 inhibition.

Covalent immobilization of perfluorophenylphosphonic acid to simultaneously achieve high stability and proton conductivity for high-temperature proton exchange membrane

Weiyi Jin,Tianqi Yang,Yi Tang,Weiyu Zhang,Miao Tong,Xiangdong Zhang,Chenliang Gong

Phosphoric acid (PA) leakage and mechanical instability in high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) remain challenges. In this work, through molecular structure design, a novel tetraamine monomer (PyTAB-5F) was synthesized and used to develop a polybenzimidazole containing perfluorophenyl and pyridine units (5FPBI). Via the Arbuzov reaction, a phosphonated polymer (P–5FPBI) with robust C–P bonds was formed, enabling covalent anchoring of phosphonic acid groups. The acidity of the phosphonic groups was enhanced by the strong inductive effect of adjacent fluorine atoms, allowing them to function as intrinsic proton conductors. These groups can form a stable hydrogen-bonding network with absorbed PA, thereby facilitating proton transport while improving the PA retention capability of the HT-PEMs. The optimized composite membrane (OPBI/P–5F-15%) achieved a peak power density of 757 mW cm −2 at 180 °C and demonstrated exceptional operational stability over 140 h, with a voltage decay rate of only 51.88 μV h −1 . This work provides a molecular engineering strategy for developing HT-PEMs with high performance.

Biochemical reaction-regulated electrocatalytic bipolar electrochemiluminescence platform with immobilization-free and exogenous electroactive-species-free sensing for cholesterol detection

Yang Mengyin,Yang Weiqiang,Ni Chengliang,Song Zhiping,Chen Xiaoping,Wang Qingxiang,Ni Jiancong,Lin Zhenyu

A biochemical reaction-regulated electrocatalysis strategy for quantitative cholesterol detection using platinum nanoparticle-functionalized indium tin oxide electrodes for electrochemiluminescence. In this system, cholesterol is oxidized by cholesterol oxidase to generate H 2 O 2 in situ, which serves as an endogenous electroactive species and undergoes reduction at the BPE cathode. According to the charge balance principle, the cathodic reaction drives the anodic oxidation of the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /TPrA system, generating an ECL signal that correlates quantitatively with cholesterol concentration. PtNPs at the BPE cathode enhance the electrocatalytic reduction of H 2 O 2 and accelerate interfacial electron transfer, leading to an amplified anodic ECL response. Under optimized conditions, the platform exhibits a linear range of 0.1–10 mM with an extrapolated detection limit of 98.4 µM. The proposed sensing strategy was successfully applied to cholesterol detection in human serum samples, demonstrating good accuracy and anti-interference capability. Notably, the ChOx-catalyzed oxidation of cholesterol proceeds homogeneously in the sensing solution, while no enzyme-immobilization step is required during sensor preparation. In addition, no externally added electroactive species are required in the sensing cell, while the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /TPrA ECL system is confined to the reporting cell. This sensing/reporting separation effectively minimizes cross-interference. Graphical abstract
