Ion-exchange induced Ni doping of α-MnO2 cathode with structural modification for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Xiaodong Liang,Xin Liu,Peixiong Wang,Zhongxian Guo,Xin Chen,Jia Yao,Jingying Li,Yi Gan,Lin Lv,Li Tao,Hanbin Wang,Houzhao Wan,Jun Zhang,Hao Wang

Manganese-based cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries provide a moderate voltage window and good specific capacity. However, the disproportionation reactions cause manganese to dissolve during the charge and discharge process, seriously affecting its cycle stability. Herein, nickel-doped α phase manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO 2 ) obtained by ion exchange effectively improves the lattice stability and cycle stability of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). The introduction of Ni 2+ supports the lattice structure of MnO 2 , reduces structural damage and manganese (Mn) dissolution caused by the Jahn-Teller effect during the cycle, and improves its electronic conduction and ion migration capabilities. It quickly completes the activation process at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 and stably maintains a capacity of 233 mAh g −1 . After 2800 cycles at 1 A g −1 , the capacity retention rate remains 96.3 %. In contrast, MnO 2 without ion exchange modification has dropped to 19.6 % after 130 cycles. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of the ion exchange process, bringing more precise and effective ideas to the research and development of high-performance aqueous zinc-manganese batteries.

Modelling the bottom effect of electrochemical devices with large aspect ratios in α-MnO2 based Zn2+ pouch cells

Zerui Li,Zehui Zhang,Wenxin Zhang,Xiufeng Tang,Jiong Zhang,Zixuan Wu,Jianyi Luo

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising for energy storage due to their high safety, but Zn 2+ distribution characters in cathodes remains poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively map the overall Zn 2+ distribution profiles and reveal localized nonuniform distribution characteristics in a representative α-MnO 2 cathode. Two striking features of the nonuniform distribution are identified: the ‘bottom effect’ characterized by substantially higher Zn concentration at the electrode bottom, and ‘inactive areas’ where Zn concentration is extremely low. The bottom effect occurs only under specific initial electrode capacity and nonuniform discharging current-density distribution. Inactive areas are distinguished by the absence of Zn 4 (SO 4 ) (OH) 6 ·xH 2 O (ZSH) nanosheets on the surface, which probably results from poor wettability with the aqueous electrolyte due to lack of hydrophilic α-MnO 2 . This conceptual framework offers new insights for developing strategies to mitigate these issues and enhance electrode performance.

Microstructure modulation of α-MnO2 via mild urea-induced phase transition for enhanced catalytic ozonation of emerging contaminants

Peixin Zhu,Mengyao Xiao,Xixi Chen,Jingsong Luo,Zhong Fang,Long Chen,Huinan Zhao,Chun He,Shuanghong Tian

While facet engineering and heterostructure construction are recognized as effective strategies for enhancing catalytic performance through defect creation, their integration remains scarce and challenging. This study develops a mild urea-assisted thermal strategy to construct an oxygen vacancy (OV)-rich α -MnO 2 (310)/Mn 3 O 4 heterojunction (Mn400-0.125U), comprising 48.6% α -MnO 2 with preferentially exposed (310) facets and 51.4% Mn 3 O 4 . The low OV formation energy on (310) facets coupled with heterojunction interfaces effects leads to a high OV concentration. Mn400-0.125U demonstrated exceptional catalytic ozonation performance, achieving a sulfamethoxazole degradation rate constant (7.7×10 −2 min −1 ), which is 1.8-, 1.6-, and 3.3-fold higher than those of α -MnO 2 , Mn 3 O 4 , and single ozonation, respectively. Operational advantages include ultralow catalyst dosage (0.1 g/L), broad pH adaptability (3.5–10.5), and remarkable resilience against aqueous matrix interference (≤ 12.4% efficiency loss). Both experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the abundant OVs, combined with the proper hydrophilicity of Mn400-0.125U, synergistically trigger barrier-free activation and decomposition of ozone, subsequently generating a series of reactive species via chain reactions. A hybrid oxidation regime was identified where the non-radical pathway mediated by electron-transfer, O* (surface oxygen atoms), and 1 O 2 predominates over radical pathways (•O 2 − /•OH). This work establishes a facile coupled modulation protocol for creating defect-rich manganese oxides applied in catalytic ozonation of emerging contaminants.

Treatment of TMP with α-MnO2/CA film coupled with dielectric barrier discharge system: Mechanism and safety assessment

Man Xiao,Chengwu Yi,Muhammad Imran Nawaz,Rongjie Yi,Haoran Liu

The ecological risks from antibiotic residues in water require advanced treatment methods that ensure not just degradation but also complete detoxification. This study develops a highly efficient system coupling dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor with an α-MnO 2 /cellulose acetate (CA) catalytic membrane for the removal and detoxification of trimethoprim (TMP). The catalytic efficiency of the α-MnO 2 /CA films was assessed through comparative experiments within the DBD system, both with and without the films. Key performance indicators included the degradation kinetics of trimethoprim (TMP) in synthetic wastewater, energy efficiency, and reduction rates of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Using response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal conditions for degrading 20 mg/l of TMP were identified as 171.4W, 160 Hz, 5% catalyst loading, and a flow rate of 1200 ml/min, achieving a removal efficiency of 95.48% in 30 min. Variations in solution pH and the concentrations of H 2 O 2 and O 3 were monitored to confirm the catalytic function of α-MnO 2 /CA films. Additionally, quenching experiments demonstrated that free radicals contribute to degradation efficiency, ranking 1 O 2 > · O 2 − > · OH. A comprehensive toxicity assessment combining ECOSAR predictions and in vivo zebrafish embryo tests, confirmed the complete detoxification of the effluent, removal of neurobehavioral toxicity, and oxidative stress. Most importantly, restoring dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) activity offered direct molecular-level proof that TMP's natural bioactivity was eliminated. This highlights that the DBD-α-MnO 2 /CA system exhibits lower toxicity and minimal bioaccumulation potential, positioning it as an environmentally safe and promising alternative to conventional methods for sustainable, large-scale applications.

Selective re‑exposure of the dominant α‑MnO2 (110) facet: unraveling the intrinsic mechanism for boosted toluene oxidation

Ziqun Yang,Liangmu Pei,Juan Lei,Caiyun Han,Lijun Cheng,Shuang Wang

Selective regulation of α-MnO 2 (110) facet via doping-masking-alkaline etching. • The (110) facet dominates toluene oxidation over 0.4CMO-AT. • Cu doping masks the (110) facet, impairing O 2 adsorption. • Re-exposure optimizes O 2 adsorption and elongates the O-O bond. • (110) facet and dual vacancies boost lattice oxygen mobility and benzoate ring-opening. Regarding the ambiguity of the advantageous crystal facet of α-MnO 2 in the catalytic oxidation of toluene, this study proposes a “doping–masking–alkali etching–re‑exposure” strategy. Through Cu doping, the (110) facet is selectively masked, followed by alkali etching to selectively re‑expose the (110) facet. The intrinsic activity and regulation mechanism of the (110) facet for low‑temperature catalytic oxidation of toluene were systematically investigated. The results show that the 0.4CMO‑AT catalyst (0.4 mmol Cu‑doped α-MnO 2 after alkali etching) with selectively re‑exposed (110) facets achieves 90% toluene conversion at 209 °C, significantly outperforming 0.4CMO (0.4 mmol Cu‑doped α-MnO 2 , 280 °C) without re‑exposed (110) facets and MO (undoped α-MnO 2 , 229 °C) with unregulated facets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments collectively demonstrate that the (110) facet significantly promotes O 2 adsorption and activation, and that the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies enhances lattice oxygen migration, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier. In-situ DRIFTS identifies benzoic acid as the rate‑determining intermediate, while DFT calculations further reveal that the re‑exposed (110) facet thermodynamically favors its stabilization and ring‑opening. This work provides fresh insights into how α-MnO 2 facet engineering can be utilized for the catalytic breakdown of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A “doping-masking-alkali etching” strategy was employed to selectively re-expose the (110) facet of α-MnO 2 . This facet, in synergy with copper/oxygen vacancies, markedly enhances O 2 adsorption and activation while reducing the reaction energy barrier, thereby constructing an efficient redox cycle and boosting catalyst activity. Ti4+-induced dual-functional α-MnO2 nanowires: boosting transport kinetics and interfacial optimization for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Min Wang,Tianyi Li,Yuncheng Huang,Xin Liu,Yixuan Liang,Wen Zhang,Guoqing Yang,Fan Su,Wei Zhang,Chuan Ding,Qilin Gu,Chao Huangfu,Hailin Shen,Zhenghui Pan

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attracting widespread attention for large-scale   energy storage due to their high safety, environmental friendliness, high theoretical capacity and favorable cost-effectiveness. Substantial research has focused on addressing side reactions such as corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and dendrite formation at the zinc anode interface. However, the absence of high-performance cathode materials hinders the commercialization of this battery system. Manganese dioxide as a promising cathode candidate for ZIBs suffers from severe capacity decay during cycling, which remains a critical challenge. Herein, an effective strategy for enhancing cyclic stability and specific capacity of α-MnO 2 nanowires via Ti 4+ -induced dual-functionality is provided. As expected, the Ti-doped sample exhibits superior cyclic stability and rate capability compared to the pristine material, delivering an initial specific capacity of 175 mAh·g -1 and maintaining 116 mAh·g -1 after 200 cycles. Notably, the Ti-doped electrode retains excellent long-term stability and comparable specific capacity upon reverting to the initial low current density after stepwise cycling at progressively increased rates, demonstrating enhanced structural and electrochemical reversibility. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the incorporation of Ti 4+ offers dual-functionality by reducing energy barriers for electron transitions and ion migration, while optimizing the electrode surface to suppress insulating by-products accumulation, thereby boosting overall electrochemical performance.

Scalable and highly conductive α-MnO2/rGO composite cathode for a flexible quasi-solid-state zinc-ion battery

Zhao Wang,Wenrong Hu

Aqueous Zn//MnO 2 batteries have attracted much attention for their promising application in large-scale energy storage and flexible electronics. However, it is an obstacle to develop high-performance MnO 2 that can be massively synthesized via a facile method. Herein, a mechanical grinding method is employed to prepare α -MnO 2 /reduced graphene oxide ( α -MnO 2 /rGO) composite material in which α -MnO 2 nanofibers are uniformly loaded onto the surface of rGO sheets. It is found that the α -MnO 2 /rGO composite cathode exhibits much superior rate performance and cycling stability over α -MnO 2 , which is attributed to the significantly increased electrical conductivity and enlarged specific surface area. In addition, a flexible quasi-solid-state Zn// α -MnO 2 /rGO battery with excellent cycling performance was fabricated, and can survive multiple damages. This work provides a guidance to the massive production of high-performance cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Electron transport channel-mediated Z-type α-MnO2/Cd1.7In2S4.7 heterojunction for photocatalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dicarbonylfuran

Liang Yuwei,Huang Yufan,Hu Chunling,Cai Jinyu,Cao Yifan,Meng Guihua,Wu Jianning,Li Qi,Liu Zhiyong

Designing catalysts with suitable valence conduction band positions to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) with moderate redox capacity is to achieve efficient photocatalytic biomass-selective value-added oxidation. This protocol addresses the issue by tuning material structural defects, altering the surface electronic structure, and ultimately enhancing the raw material’s performance. Here, an appropriate amount of one - dimensional nanorods α -MnO 2 adjusted material structural defects, increased the adsorbed oxygen (O ads )/lattice oxygen (O latt ) and Mn 3+ ratios, and served as an electron transport conduit, facilitating O₂ activation to generate ROS. The Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 solid solution enables the optimal valence band position by adjusting the Cd 2+ : In 3+ ratio, thus selectively oxidizing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dicarbonylfuran (DFF). In situ XPS revealed that photogenerated electrons in Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 quickly transferred to the conduction band of α -MnO 2 , and photogenerated holes from α -MnO 2 moved to the valence band of Cd 1.7 In 2 S 4.7 . This significantly enhanced the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers at the interface. The optimal sample achieved 56% conversion of HMF and 72% selectivity of DFF under simulated sunlight. This protocol provides a new approach for the establishment of electron transport channel structures based on α -MnO 2 constructs and value-added biomass photocatalytic conversion under simulated sunlight.

Yolk–Shell MnO@ZnMn2O4/N–C Nanorods Derived from α-MnO2/ZIF-8 as Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Ming Zhong,Donghui Yang,Chenchao Xie,Zhang Zhang,Zhen Zhou,Xian-He Bu

Manganese oxides (MnO x ) are promising anode materials for lithium ion batteries, but they generally exhibit mediocre performances due to intrinsic low ionic conductivity, high polarization, and poor stability. Herein, yolk–shell nanorods comprising of nitrogen-doped carbon (N–C) coating on manganese monoxide (MnO) coupled with zinc manganate (ZnMn 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles are manufactured via one-step carbonization of α -MnO 2 /ZIF-8 precursors. When evaluated as anodes for lithium ion batteries, MnO@ZnMn 2 O 4 /N–C exhibits an reversible capacity of 803 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 after 100 cycles, excellent cyclability with a capacity of 595 mAh g −1 at 1000 mAg −1 after 200 cycles, as well as better rate capability compared with those non-N–C shelled manganese oxides (MnO x ). The outstanding electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique yolk–shell nanorod structure, the coating effect of N–C and nanoscale size.

Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction α-MnO2/BiOI with Oxygen-Rich Vacancies Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants under Visible Light

Litao Jia,Fanghua Li,Chenjia Yang,Xiaonan Yang,Beibei Kou,Yonglei Xing,Juan Peng,Gang Ni,Zhong Cao,Shiyu Zhang,Tong Zhao,Xiaoyong Jin

The degradation efficiency of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) processes for the removal of organic pollutants is highly dependent on the performance of the photoelectroanode catalyst. The design of PEC systems with a direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism and visible light excitation is essential to enhance the degradation efficiency of organic compounds. Here, a α-MnO2/BiOI direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized through a convenient and feasible method. It is remarkable that the photoanode exhibited excellent PEC performance under visible light irradiation; a 95% removal rate of tetracycline (TC) pollutants was achieved within 2 h, and it had excellent stability and reusability, which was expected to degrade antibiotics efficiently and environmentally in harsh environments. The presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) in the α-MnO2/BiOI heterojunction was confirmed by electron spin resonance technique, and the OVs acted as electron traps that contributed substantially to the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. ESR characterization showed that the main reactive radicals during TC degradation were •OH and •O2−. By analyzing the intermediates, the possible degradation pathways of TC were further analyzed and a suitable degradation mechanism was proposed. The toxicity changes in the degradation process were explored by evaluating the toxicity of the intermediates. This study provides a new way to enhance the performance of Bi-based semiconductor photocatalysts for the effective degradation of TC in water. Keywords:direct Z-scheme heterojunction;organic pollutants;OVs;PEC

Carbon ink modified α-MnO2 as a peroxymonosulfate activator for enhanced degradation of organic pollutants via a direct electron transfer process

Long Cheng,Jiale Bai,Mingyu Wei,Shuaiqi Zhao,Aihua Xu,Xiaoxia Li

Transition metal oxides and carbon can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to decompose organic contaminants. The combination of two materials can facilitate the adsorption of oxidants and pollutants on the catalyst and improve electron transfer efficiency. In this study, carbon nanoparticles-MnO 2 composites (IC-MnO 2 ) were synthesized by coating carbon ink on α-MnO 2 and applied in PMS activation for acid orange 7 (AO7) degradation. The results showed that carbon nanoparticles were uniformly loaded on the α-MnO 2 surface. Complete degradation of AO7 (20 mg/L) can be achieved in 15 min in the IC-MnO 2 /PMS system with a first-order kinetic rate constant of 0.22 min −1 . Electrochemical analysis , quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance , PMS decomposition, and removal of various contaminants demonstrated that AO7 could be efficiently degraded via a direct electron transfer pathway. A galvanic oxidation system containing the salt bridge and two separate cells was further established to confirm the electron transfer mechanism of the catalytic system. The study expands MnO 2 applications by compositing nanocarbon materials in advanced oxidation processes and sheds light on the direct electron transfer mechanism.

Self-supporting oxygen vacancy-rich α-MnO2 nanowire/few-layer graphite/SWNT bundle composite film for high-performance flexible aqueous zinc-ion battery cathode

Yuning Sun,Yuexin Liu,Zhongqiang Wang,Xiaoli Zhao,Kefeng Cai

The increasing demand for flexible and wearable electronic devices has led to widespread interest in flexible electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the transformation of the battery structure from conventional to flexible presents a great challenge to the battery design. Herein, we developed a facile method for the preparation of a self-supporting composite film consisting of oxygen-vacancy rich MnO 2 nanowires (NWs), few-layer graphite nanosheets (FLGs), and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles as the cathode of flexible zinc-ion batteries. This ternary interwoven interconnection 3D structure enhances the electrochemical performance of the battery and realizes fast charge transfer; oxygen vacancies in the MnO 2 NWs caused by heat treatment (300 °C in Ar) allow for rapid intercalation and diffusion of Zn 2+ . The interwoven FLGs and SWNT bundles improve the electrical conductivity, and the robust interactions between the two carbon nanomaterials and the MnO 2 NWs effectively make the composite film with excellent mechanical properties. This self-supporting flexible electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 374 mAh/g at 0.4 A/g, maintains a Coulombic efficiency of ∼ 100 % after 1600 cycles at 2 A/g, and has a high energy density of 651.5 Wh kg −1 at 65.2 W kg −1 . Moreover, the flexible zinc ion batteries assembled with the electrode demonstrate good mechanical properties and a high reversible specific capacity of 343 mAh/g after 75 bending cycles. Based on these findings, we believe that this composite film holds great promise as a cathode material in flexible energy storage applications.
